00:10You've been bennied.
00:12But whichever we prefer, with over 300 days of that glorious sunshine a year,
00:17it sure beats the cold and grey of the old UK.
00:20Ah, this is a life.
00:22Living that dream life can be blooming hard graft.
00:26My life, you're right.
00:28Stress level.
00:29Through the roof.
00:31But at the end of the working day...
00:33Girl power!
00:34Girl power!
00:34Come on, Sam!
00:36Booyah!
00:37The quality of life on the costas...
00:42...is priceless.
00:43Cheers!
00:45Peace and love.
00:45Cheers.
00:46That's why there will always be...
00:48Espana!
00:50We love it!
00:51Olé!
00:52The weather.
00:53The boys.
00:54The wife being happy.
00:56Bargain-loving Brits...
00:57...in the sun.
01:00Today on The Costas.
01:02Others in the air for new couple Sonia and Tim.
01:05But if two's company, is three a crowd?
01:08I think I'm a little bit of a goose for you.
01:10Have animal shelter bosses Paul and Mick finally found the perfect match for a desperate dog?
01:16What do you reckon, Hank?
01:18And we rewind to when landlord Clark battled to salvage his barn with a radical relaunch.
01:24There's a lot in state. We've got to start getting the cash in.
01:33I hate it when my cushions are not right.
01:35In Beno Madina...
01:36I've not had a chance to do anything with being in work.
01:40Liverpool La Sonia is on a whirlwind cleaning spree.
01:44One, I don't like things out of place anyway. I hate the place being on Saturday.
01:48And two, Tim's coming so I don't want it to be like a tip.
01:51The 52-year-old hairdresser came to The Costas five years ago.
01:56I moved to Spain when I split up with my ex-husband.
01:59I just wanted to get away, make a new life.
02:02I fell in love with the place.
02:04And I've just decided this is where my heart is.
02:08It's my hairdressing cupboard.
02:10When I was going through that part of my life, I just thought, you know what, fresh start.
02:14And the fresh start marked a new chapter for the mum of four.
02:19I wasn't ready for a relationship because I was still trying to get over what was going on with the
02:24ex.
02:25So, no, I wasn't looking for anything.
02:26But two months ago, fate had other ideas.
02:30I went to work in another bar just to get me by.
02:33And Tim came into the bar as a customer and we just had a banter.
02:37There was nothing at all because he supports Liverpool and I support Everton.
02:41And he starts calling me Red Sonia.
02:43And it just developed from there.
02:46This is all for Tim to do when he gets here.
02:49And even on the first date, I was thinking, like, yeah, he's great.
02:52We had a really good laugh.
02:54It's grown and I wouldn't be without him now.
02:57I only have, like, something like 10, 15 minutes before I have to leave for the airport.
03:02Sonia's new man, Tim, is jetting in from the UK today.
03:05And eager to nurture their budding romance, Sonia wants to make a dazzling impression.
03:10Where are you?
03:11But Sonia's love nest has a guest.
03:15I'm sure you don't want any help.
03:16Family member, Pat.
03:18I know while I'm at the airport, could you, would you be able to start, like, just throw some sausages
03:23in?
03:23Oh, right. Brilliant.
03:24I'm looking forward to meeting Tim, by the way.
03:27I've got an older brother.
03:28We share the same dad.
03:29And now I've got his mum staying with me.
03:31I've been helping her find an apartment to buy in between going to work and Tim coming.
03:36OK.
03:37I got a marriage proposal last week.
03:39You got a what?
03:40You what?
03:41I made a mushroom cream sauce.
03:44Yeah.
03:44And I was there, I was staring there, and I let him taste it.
03:47And he literally got down on one day and went, Sonia, will you marry me?
03:50And I just went, get up, staff, lad.
03:53Don't ever ask me that again.
03:55And he went, well, can you help me up, please, and stuff?
03:58Well, you know what they say, the way to a man's heart.
04:01Tim has already met some of Sonia's friends.
04:04A friend, she was talking to him, and she said, you know what, Sonia, I like him.
04:08I like him.
04:09And it was sort of like, it was like I got, like, the go-ahead.
04:13But will her new man get the thumbs up from Pat?
04:17I'm going to meet the man in person, aren't I, today?
04:20Yes.
04:20I'm seeing your Tim today.
04:22And what are we doing tomorrow?
04:24Signing for your partner.
04:25I'm signing for my partner tomorrow.
04:27You look like you're going on the razzle.
04:29Do I?
04:30Well, aren't I going on the razzle today?
04:32I'm meeting your Tim.
04:32I know, but you look like you've got your lippy on me, haven't you?
04:35Yeah, yeah.
04:36Well, I've got to make an impression, haven't I?
04:38Right, so what time is it now?
04:40It's...
04:40Yeah.
04:41It's plane lands in five minutes.
04:44Five minutes?
04:45It's a 20-minute drive to Malaga Airport.
04:48Ooh, you best get a move on, Sonia.
04:50Hey, babe, can you let me know when you land?
04:52Erm, I'm going to head up towards the airport now.
04:55And I'll make sure I jump in the house down.
04:58Yeah, OK.
04:58Please don't do that.
05:00OK.
05:01Go on, bend my arm.
05:01Oh.
05:02Oh.
05:03I think you'd better get your skates on, haven't you?
05:09Harrison?
05:10Come on, Harrison.
05:11Hey, Mick.
05:12Hey, Mick.
05:13We're on.
05:14Hey-ya.
05:14Good girl, boy.
05:15It's an early start at the kennels for Mick and Paul.
05:19Yeah, we're going to help Sarah do the medication.
05:21A spoonful of sausage helps the medicine go down for kennel worker Sarah.
05:26To make sure that they take the medication, you have to put it in different sausages, cheese,
05:30etc.
05:31Charity bosses Harper Gelad Mick and his best pal Paul from Nottingham are mucking in, as it's
05:37a big day for one of their four maggot friends.
05:40Hello, Hank.
05:41Hello, Hank.
05:42So this guy's Hank, and today, hopefully, he'll be going to his new home.
05:48Hank was rescue two years ago now.
05:50He came in very thin.
05:51He's some sort of point across.
05:53He's quite a placid dog.
05:56How are you all going?
05:57All right?
05:58Morning.
05:58Morning.
05:59Morning.
05:59You ready for it?
06:00Yes.
06:01Absolutely.
06:02Morning, Jackie.
06:03Morning, Dave.
06:03Big day for you two anyway, isn't it?
06:05Or three.
06:05And Hank's possible new pup parents, Jackie and Dave, have arrived with the rest of the volunteer
06:11walkers.
06:12We've got quite a few dog walkers.
06:14So they get walked every day.
06:15Jackie's going to have walked quite a few times, and she fell in love with Hank.
06:20And there are plenty of others hoping to meet their four-legged forever friend just like Jackie.
06:27Thanks for all coming today.
06:28Yeah, have a great day.
06:30Yeah.
06:30And when you check them out, please bring them all back.
06:32Yeah, don't lose any.
06:33Don't lose any.
06:34Sound advice, chaps.
06:36Sound advice.
06:37Come on.
06:39The dog walking is very good.
06:41Especially if someone is interested in the dog.
06:43We normally encourage them to come down to the kennels and to walk the dogs and to get
06:47to know them prior to them just adopting them, you know, just taking them away.
06:51Mmm.
06:53See you later.
06:54Beautiful.
06:55My little girlie.
06:58Organising the dog walks is just one of the many jobs that President Mick and Vice-President
07:02Paul have.
07:04I think me and you work quite well together, don't we?
07:06I think a lot of people don't think we do.
07:08No, no, we do.
07:09Apparently we bicker a lot, like a married couple.
07:11I don't see that myself.
07:12We bounce off each other, don't we?
07:15Hoping to build a friendship like Mick and Paul, it's time for Jackie and Dave to be reunited
07:19with Hank.
07:21How are you going?
07:22All right, nice to see you.
07:22We're going to walk together and see Hank, yeah?
07:24With Tim, he looks like he recognises us, so I think...
07:27I hope so.
07:27There he goes.
07:29And we used to have a pointer.
07:30He looks very similar to our last dog.
07:33Yeah, yeah.
07:34So we were like, okay, maybe we could get a friend for our other dog who's also a rescue.
07:39He's from Greece.
07:40So that's how it started, really.
07:42And today we've come up here to take him back to Wales, and fingers crossed, it all
07:48goes well.
07:49Fingers crossed, Jackie.
07:51Shall we go and get him?
07:51Yeah, yeah.
07:52Let's do it.
07:52All right, let's do it.
07:54So you ready for him?
07:55Oh, yeah.
07:56Oh, yeah, definitely, yeah.
07:57I think he's ready for you.
07:58I think he locks himself a bit.
08:00Help, mate.
08:01They say every dog has its day, but could it be today for Hank?
08:08Coming up, will the numbers stack up for bar owner Clark's pub relaunch?
08:13Right.
08:13We need to break even point, and that's about 150 euro.
08:18Why is every light on red?
08:20And will true love wait for Sonia?
08:23I hate being late.
08:31We love Benadol.
08:33We do, and you know what we love almost as much.
08:37Champagne, champagne, where are you?
08:39No, not fizz, Jojo.
08:41Fancy dress?
08:42First pass all the way, young man.
08:44We go to great lengths to look the part.
08:47We have come in last minute to replace Tinky Winky.
08:50Well, of course you have.
08:51Here we go, Prince Charming up the ready.
08:53A classic Chris, and speaking of the past.
08:56Hello.
08:58We're winding back the clock to when Scottish bar owner Clark needed a monumental relaunch to rescue his failing bar,
09:05after Covid devastated his Benidorm business.
09:10We were lucky if we were making 20 euros a day.
09:12Nobody here.
09:13Lack of tourists.
09:15Hello.
09:16It was a struggle.
09:17We had to close.
09:19Hello, darling.
09:20Yeah, that's how the ticket's done.
09:21Thank you very much.
09:22It's getting busier.
09:23Now we can make anywhere between 200, 300, 400 a day.
09:27Before we were stopped from working, we were maybe making 1,500 a day.
09:33Need a new barman's helper.
09:34The pressure couldn't be higher.
09:36There you go.
09:37There's a lot at stake.
09:38We've got to start getting the cash in.
09:41That's why we came to Benidorm in the first place, just to open a bar to make money.
09:46No punters would mean calling time at his beloved bar for good.
09:50We've got a sign that my auntie gave for the first day we opened.
09:53Haste you back.
09:55It means we welcome you back.
09:57Hopefully they come in their droves tonight.
10:00Originally from Aberdeen, 54-year-old Clark and wife Karen, hello Karen, may run the
10:05thistle, but had hoped life on the costas would be anything but prickly.
10:10Basically, we got fed up of Aberdeen.
10:12The sky's grey.
10:14The buildings are grey.
10:15People are grey.
10:16It rains every day.
10:17When you come to Benidorm, you get over 300 days of sunshine.
10:21The couple live a mere caber toss away from their bar.
10:24This is our living room.
10:26It's a two bedroom, small apartment.
10:28It's great for us.
10:29It's home.
10:30It's been home for five years.
10:31Back at the bar, the countdown to the big night begins.
10:35There's our Glaswegian friends.
10:37They've come over from Glasgow for a week.
10:39Slangeva.
10:40This is our, er, just a little sign that we've got made for the three dogs that visit.
10:44We've got Lily, Cara, which is my one, and Ruby.
10:47Clark's also holding a raffle and other games to drum up cash for the event.
10:53This has got to be a big day for us.
10:55It gives us a chance to raise money, raise awareness,
10:59and make some money for ourselves.
11:02I think an act like this, it should get quite a few people in.
11:06The bars like this need people to come back
11:08and need people spending their money over the bar.
11:12Regulars are keeping their fingers crossed for the grand reopening.
11:16But Clark's preparations have hit a snag.
11:21I'm trying to set up the computer to run, er,
11:26independently here and have the video on here
11:30so that I don't have to chop and change if I can get the display to work.
11:34Have you tried turning it on and off again?
11:36Technical diff day is every time we do a charity event.
11:43Come on. One minute. Come on, Hank.
11:45Back at Paul and Mick's dog shelter in Mazaron.
11:48Good boy. Good boy. Come here.
11:50It's an exciting day for pointer Hank.
11:56What do you reckon, Hank?
11:58Jackie and Dave used to run a doggy daycare back in Cambridge
12:02and are hoping to adopt Hank.
12:05They'll be taking him home with them for the first time
12:08and see how he gets on in the house.
12:10And hopefully today, if everything's fine,
12:13they're planning on keeping him forever.
12:15The couple met their potential new family member
12:17at one of Paul and Mick's dog walking events.
12:21It's very hard to match a dog.
12:23I think people come down and they walk their dogs
12:25or they look for a dog.
12:26I think people just know it's their dog.
12:28It's whoever they click with.
12:30Paw, Hank. Can you do Paw, Hank? Can you do Paw?
12:33Jackie and Dave may have clicked with Hank,
12:35but they need to get the paws up from the leader of their pack.
12:39Oh, lovely. Good boy.
12:41We lost our dog about six years ago.
12:44She was.
12:44He's similar to Hank.
12:46Yeah, he just...
12:47I don't know.
12:48There's just something about him that we can't resist, can we?
12:51They have a very gentle temperament, the pointers,
12:55and we like that.
12:56He needs to be that to get on with Rufus, don't you?
12:59Yeah.
12:59So we thought Rufus could do with a friend
13:02because he seemed to get a bit lonely
13:03on the odd times we left him out on his own.
13:06So he's a very social dog.
13:08Yeah.
13:08Today, we're happy to have Hank back at our place.
13:13If everything goes well, then we'll adopt him.
13:15And, yeah, so it's quite an exciting day, really.
13:19Very exciting.
13:21You're going to have to get used to being in Kiki, Hank, OK?
13:24Come on, then.
13:25The main thing is that they bond.
13:27They care for one another, you know, and that's it, really.
13:30As long as that's working, you're halfway there.
13:33But there are still a couple of hurdles to jump.
13:37If it works, we like them to take them
13:39for at least two weeks on a foster basis,
13:41and if everything works out,
13:43then we'll go through the adoption procedure.
13:45Are you ready to come and start your new life?
13:47Yeah.
13:48Come on, let's go for a little walk, shall we?
13:50Good boy.
13:51Sorry, it's didn't go, Paul.
13:53Yeah, I think it's quite good when they go.
13:55And when you've had them quite a while,
13:57you want them to go to a good home.
13:58You don't want them to go just anywhere.
14:00So we're very thorough in that way,
14:02making sure that they're going to the right dog
14:04for the right person.
14:05We need homes all the time.
14:07We're normally home in about 80, 90 a year.
14:08And we still get calls daily now,
14:10but we were taking dogs every day.
14:12Yeah, there was just loads.
14:13Packs of dogs everywhere.
14:15But that's clearly come down.
14:17I don't know.
14:18That's through education.
14:20It's just come down.
14:20It's still not good, though.
14:21I think it is a battle,
14:22because I won't say we're winning it.
14:24No.
14:24Not by a long way.
14:27We're going to take it slow.
14:28You know, it's all going to be new for him.
14:30So once we've taken him home
14:32and he's met Rufus,
14:34we might take him for a little walk down by the beach.
14:36We might even see if he wants to have a little paddle.
14:38We've prepared a nice chicken dinner for him.
14:41Ooh, can I come?
14:42I love a roast, me.
14:44While Hank sets out for a walk,
14:46some of the volunteer dog walkers are heading back.
14:49It's just nice to come and give the dogs a walk.
14:51Lots of satisfaction.
14:52A lot of just seeing the dogs,
14:55being with the dogs,
14:56giving them the love that they need.
14:57People are nice as well, not just the dogs.
15:00And also we get a nice cup of tea on the end of it.
15:02See you later.
15:03Lovely.
15:04See you later, see you later.
15:04Thanks for coming. Bye-bye.
15:06When the dog walks over...
15:08All right.
15:08We'll go for the adoption now, Paul, yeah?
15:10Paul and Mick walk Jackie and Dave
15:12through the next steps of becoming pup parents.
15:15And it says here, for instance,
15:17we agree that the dog is being adopted by myself
15:20and will not be sold, adopted or given to another party.
15:24It's not that complicated.
15:27Once they get in touch, we have a chat with them.
15:29We like to know what sort of house they live in,
15:32what garden area they've got, whether it's secure.
15:35It's just a matter of changing the chip into their name.
15:39So if we have any problems, we will always take that dog back.
15:42Before they can adopt Hank,
15:43the couple will foster him for a couple of weeks first.
15:47The best thing we can think of for today
15:48is that Hank fits in once we get him to the house.
15:51Just excited, really, to see how he gets on
15:54and, you know, what he makes of it all, you know,
15:57being in a real house.
15:59We've had a chat with Jackie and her husband Dave
16:01and we're just going to take him down to their place now,
16:04down at his little planner.
16:05And see how he gets on.
16:05And see if we can settle him in.
16:07Let's hope the boys can help Hank
16:09seize his new chance at a new life.
16:17But Paul and Mick aren't the only animal lovers on the costas.
16:21We just love animals.
16:23We're a nation of animal lovers.
16:25Oh, we certainly are.
16:26My little dog, a little shitsuit.
16:28Oh, he's adorable.
16:29I love the bones of the lad.
16:30Ooh, lucky lad.
16:32I've got about nine dogs.
16:34How many?
16:35They're pushing around in prams.
16:39I've never...
16:39There's more dogs in prams than these babies.
16:43I have a cast called Pablo.
16:45I've got two Welsh Terriers.
16:47Do you want to know their names?
16:48Lord Griffington of Conway and Lady Gwendolyn Fleur.
16:52Love them to bits.
16:53Nice to get away from them, though.
16:54Imagine calling him in.
17:00This is the charity night for the Benidorm Rehoming Centre.
17:05It's also our grand reopening.
17:08Glad to see you foiled those tech gremlins.
17:10Let's get the night started then.
17:13A lot's riding on partners Clark and Karen's pub relaunch.
17:16It's the last chance to get their bar back in business.
17:20Always a good bit of money.
17:21Plus, we get a chance to meet and greet as many people as we haven't seen for such a long
17:25time.
17:26If trade doesn't pick up, it's adios to their Spanish dream.
17:30We holidayed in Benidorm for 27 years.
17:34We fell in love with the place and we always was going to retire here.
17:38This place came up as an opportunity for myself.
17:42Yeah.
17:42This was formerly a gay bar.
17:44It's been the oldest gay bar in Benidorm since 1967.
17:49Me and my wife are the first heterosexual couple to ever own this bar.
17:53Five years on, it's no longer just the pink pound or euro welcome.
17:57The more the merrier if it gets that till ringing.
18:00There's quite a few in just now.
18:01There's more people due.
18:03It's only nearly twenty past seven.
18:05I'm expecting about eight o'clock.
18:06There'll be quite a lot more.
18:08Clark needs tonight to go well as their empire has recently expanded.
18:13There was a restaurant that closed directly across from us.
18:16I always wanted to open a kitchen here.
18:19So we decided, well, we'll take the leap of faith and we've done it.
18:23Expanding is a massive gamble
18:24and Clark needs all the pennies he can scrape together.
18:29We need to break even point.
18:31And that's about 150 euros.
18:33Once we get past that, it's all profit for us.
18:35So the pressure's on.
18:39Are we having the raffle now?
18:41Yeah, we're having the raffle now.
18:42It's time for the raffle.
18:44So come on, everyone.
18:45Dig deep.
18:46You too, Clark.
18:48You've got to keep a coin for me.
18:50Wait, is there any change like that?
18:52That's everyone in it to win it then.
18:54So we're off.
18:55Your first ticket starts 4-7-6 and ends 4-8-0.
19:00Right.
19:02The next one's 5-2-1 to 5-2-5.
19:06That's me.
19:08Look.
19:10Ladies and the house always wins.
19:12He's won.
19:14I've got a 10-euro drink voucher in the main bar.
19:20Something dodgy going on here.
19:23The real winning ticket would mean keeping this place open and taking on that second premises.
19:29What drops to the floor comes to the door.
19:32It's 8-7-6 to 8-8-0.
19:35And Linda G wins again.
19:38Baby steps, but signs are looking good.
19:41Thank you very much for attending our grand opening.
19:44It's been a great night.
19:46And here's the better lives, better days.
19:49The bar's just broken even.
19:50But could Clarke do better with food back on the menu?
19:53Peridorm is back!
19:57Time to fire up that fryer and find out.
20:03Hopefully I will make it on time.
20:07On the way to Malaga Airport.
20:10Yep, he's landed.
20:11And I knew I'd be late.
20:13I knew it.
20:14Liverpool last Sonja is running late to a very important date.
20:18And I hate being late.
20:19At 52, Sonja's learning to love again after a painful split.
20:24Why is every light on red?
20:27Sonja wants everything to be perfect.
20:29But keeping new man Tim waiting at the airport is not the best start.
20:34I was talking to him this morning.
20:36And yeah, the butterflies are there and I can't wait.
20:38I really can't wait.
20:39I am excited to go and see him.
20:40He only went home last week.
20:41So it's been eight days.
20:43But absence makes heart groove and they've done it.
20:45It sounds mad to say.
20:46And it was actually Tim who said it.
20:48He said, we've never been in a relationship that's been so easy.
20:52We don't have to try with each other because it's natural.
20:54It's very, very natural.
20:56And after a whole week apart...
20:58Well, just get your eye out for me because I ain't got my glasses on.
21:02The lovebirds are finally reunited.
21:06You're in a shave, haven't you, babe?
21:07I did, yes.
21:08Good boy.
21:10Rummy 59-year-old Tim is the lucky lad to have captured Sonja's heart.
21:16We must speak about 30 times a day.
21:18When you see us together, you'd think we've been together for years.
21:22When in fact, it's only two months.
21:24Tim's now retired and has the next 10 days to spend with Sonja.
21:29Oh, I'm over the moon to be back.
21:31Did you get butterflies?
21:33I think they're bigger than butterflies now.
21:37I think they've evolved.
21:39That's only from my food, though, isn't it?
21:41It's not for anything else.
21:42Mushroom sauce.
21:44Oh, yes. Mushroom sauce.
21:48Is it love or a well-executed room?
21:50Talking of food back at Sonja's apartment...
21:54I'm cooking our sausages and hope everything turns out it's OK.
21:58Family member Pat is staying for a few days.
22:02I'm dead excited to meet him because I've spoke to him on the video call.
22:07Yeah, he said he sounds very nice and he looks very nice.
22:10Well, you're about to find out, Pat, but will Tim get her seal of approval?
22:15Patricia, meet Timothy.
22:17Oh, the famous one.
22:19Sunday night.
22:19Amazing to meet you.
22:20Lovely to meet you.
22:21Yeah.
22:22Oh, hey, very charming.
22:24Thank you very much.
22:25What did I say about leaves?
22:27Very, very smart, very charming.
22:29What a blusher!
22:30I know.
22:31That's the ready muff.
22:32Right, he's ready for your sandwiches.
22:34Oh, yeah, please.
22:35Just feels good that he's here now.
22:36Tim will need to refuel with those sausage sarnies, as Sonja's got big plans for this afternoon.
22:42Because I live here, we don't do the touristy things.
22:45So, I've decided today, around the corner we've got a castle.
22:48Pat hasn't seen it either.
22:50So, it'd be nice for both of them to see it.
22:52Why don't you drop me somewhere in town?
22:55No, you come with us, because I want you to see the church night anyway.
22:58Then we're going to have some tapa.
23:00No, listen to me.
23:01Listen to me.
23:02I was younger than in love once.
23:03No, listen.
23:04No, listen.
23:05Listen, mate.
23:06No, listen.
23:06Because you're going to be moving over anyway.
23:08I want you to see these sights.
23:10Sonja wants to visit the Colomaris castle, but Pat has some doubts.
23:14I'm looking forward to going out this afternoon, but I don't want to be a good freak.
23:18So, I'll go and finish the sandwich then and I'll wash up.
23:21Oh, Tim's a keeper.
23:23So, here we are.
23:24Back to where it all started for me.
23:27At the sink.
23:29Domesticated.
23:32You taking the...
23:35There's a method in me madness.
23:37What's that?
23:38One of them lovely dinners of yours, my dear.
23:42With all the chores done...
23:43Pat, are you nearly ready?
23:45I don't know what I've done with my glasses either, Pat.
23:48Oh, my God.
23:49You pay.
23:50There's a few senior moments going on before the trio leave.
23:54Good job and patience, isn't it?
23:55Bryce, I'm ready when you are.
23:56Well, I'm just having a moment to you, Pat.
23:58Oh, well, yeah.
23:59It's the stress, I think, of the travel.
24:01It's done, mate.
24:01Right, I'm going to start putting time on you two.
24:03Oh, yes, whatever.
24:04Do you know what?
24:05Is it like me?
24:06Just, you put things down, you don't know where you put them.
24:08I'll tell you.
24:09Herding and cats spring to mind.
24:11Pat, are you getting in the car?
24:13How do you pull the seat forward?
24:15That's not my car.
24:16We're up there, Pat.
24:19I'm in for a hell of a day with this.
24:21It's going to be fun.
24:23Good luck, Sonia.
24:23See you at the castle.
24:27Coming up, will Paul and Mick's rescue pup be welcomed with open paws by his new pack?
24:33We're never really that sure what's going to happen.
24:36It's a kiss.
24:37And will Cupid clock in for Sonia?
24:40I can propose to you up there.
24:42No, no, no.
24:50Right, beer.
24:51What am I doing here?
24:53Beer.
24:55Void by the success of the pub relaunch, Brave Scots Clark and Karen have taken on the cafe opposite in
25:02Benidorm Oldtown.
25:04Oh, here we go.
25:08Before they can give us a grand tour, a last minute delivery to sort.
25:12The only problem, lack of space.
25:14Not once you get that second venue up and running, hopefully.
25:18When you hit our street, the first thing you see is our salt air flag.
25:22So everybody calls us the little Scotland now.
25:25We're taking over.
25:28But my wife thrives on feeding people.
25:31So the kitchen will be your domain, Karen.
25:33I stay out the first way and he stays out of mine.
25:36We'll say no more.
25:38The recipe for a successful marriage.
25:40I'll take you in.
25:41Come on.
25:42Just a highland fling across the cobbles and ooh.
25:46We're still cleaning.
25:47We're still cleaning, getting ready to open.
25:49This is the Thistle kitchen.
25:52We have enough room in here for about 26 people.
25:55It's home cooked fare.
25:57I mean, it's a Scottish theme.
25:59So you get your haggis, neeps and tatties, you get your mints and tatties.
26:02And then we have the twists where Scotland's a multicultural country.
26:06So we've got the curries and the Chinese.
26:09All inclusive eats.
26:11Good thinking.
26:12They tried to launch sooner, but extreme hot weather stopped play.
26:17I bet that never happens in Aberdeenshire.
26:19Everybody's walking about sweating.
26:20The customers didn't like it.
26:22So we decided to close for 10 days, which they extended into 14.
26:26But we can't afford to keep the kitchen closed.
26:28The heat is definitely on with rents to pay.
26:31They need to open today and start making money.
26:35We need to get the kitchen open.
26:36We do a lot of breakfasts.
26:37We're one of the earliest openers.
26:39A lot of them don't open here at 11.
26:40We open at 10.
26:41Sometimes half past nine.
26:43They're open in a matter of hours,
26:45but juggling the kitchen alongside their pub is piling on the pressure.
26:49We go into afternoon shifts.
26:50So you get your brunches and we do our high teas.
26:53And then we go, we close mid afternoon.
26:56So the current can have a rest.
26:58It's hard graft, but they'll do what it takes
27:00to keep customers coming back.
27:02We've got our TV.
27:03We do show sport in here.
27:06Karen doesn't like it.
27:07But when we've got people eating meals and that,
27:10they like their football.
27:12And you come in here, this is Karen's to me,
27:14and I stay out of here.
27:16Wise.
27:17So, chef, what's your signature dish?
27:19Well, I make my own pies.
27:21Ooh, that's my boat.
27:22And normal scones.
27:24Fruit, cheese, apple and cinnamon.
27:27Ooh, bestil my beating hungry heart.
27:29With the grand reopening only two hours away,
27:32are you on track, Karen?
27:34Yes, it's okay.
27:35Until he starts interfering too much.
27:38On my side, I just tell him to go away.
27:41Well, in that case, I'll get out of your hair too.
27:43As you can see, I've got a mountain of stock.
27:45I don't know how long this has got to last.
27:47We've got a busy, busy weekend ahead of us.
27:49So, they've called in the cavalry.
27:51Karen's good mate, Jen.
27:53Well, you do the white bits and I'll do the wee bits.
27:57Yep.
27:58We're nearly there.
27:59I'll still have forgot to do something.
28:01Always forget to do something.
28:04Time's not on your side if you have, Karen.
28:09So, what's the name then?
28:11So, it's a castle.
28:13Back in Benelmadina.
28:14It's a remains of a castle.
28:16Oh, my gosh.
28:17Loved up Sonia's going all out to impress new man Tim
28:20and her brother's mum, Pat, with a bit of sightseeing.
28:24I just can't get over the architectures.
28:27It was absolutely fantastic.
28:29Didn't think I was going to see something beautiful like this today.
28:33So, yep.
28:34I'm absolutely made up.
28:35Wait till you get inside, Pat.
28:37Right, you ready?
28:38Forward and onward.
28:39Even though Tim's just flown in from Birmingham this morning,
28:43Sonia's whisked her guests off to a local beauty spot.
28:46Does anybody have any idea what's called?
28:49I'm excited.
28:50The place is dedicated to the life and adventures
28:53of explorer Christopher Columbus.
28:56Castillo.
28:58Colors.
28:58Is that my silver black?
29:01Oh, I bet there's going to be a lot of laughs on this day out.
29:05Do you want a picture?
29:06Pat, do you want a picture?
29:06Do you want a picture?
29:07I'm going to get a picture, come on.
29:08But do I need to buy a new hat?
29:11Give us a kiss.
29:15Upline and sinker, she's got me, I'm afraid.
29:17It's been a whirlwind romance for the couple
29:19who met just two months ago.
29:21Life at the moment couldn't be going any better.
29:24It's something I didn't expect to happen.
29:25It's a late in life.
29:27I wasn't looking for love or a romance of any description.
29:30At my age, you think, you know, that might have gone by the way.
29:34But things happen for a reason.
29:36Fate.
29:36I can propose to you up there.
29:38No, no, no.
29:40Don't fall through the window.
29:41Why?
29:41I'll try not to.
29:43I didn't expect this for the first day.
29:46But we're here now, so there's me thinking it'd be a quiet day in the bar.
29:50Bit of tapas, early night, and that's going out the window.
29:52Yeah.
29:53With Tim not expecting a full-on excursion, let's hope Sonia can steer the day back on
29:58course.
29:59This one.
30:00Oh!
30:00One more.
30:01I didn't see that one.
30:01And then the next one.
30:02Yeah, you...
30:04Told you there's nice, aren't you?
30:05We're glassy dearly wet.
30:07It's the jeep.
30:08It's the jeep.
30:10Oh, they...
30:10Hellen up, aren't they?
30:11It's never a dorm moment without our part.
30:14Oh, no, no.
30:15Forward and onward, Macbeth.
30:16That's the spirit, Tim.
30:18Captain Pugwash.
30:20Remember that?
30:21Aye, aye, Captain.
30:22What's it like having people, two women, looking up to you?
30:27To be a dog.
30:28Oh, God.
30:30And it's loving every second of it.
30:33I've never seen anything so beautiful in my life.
30:36Before the trio head for tapas, the lovebirds grab a chance to be alone.
30:41Peaceful, innit?
30:42Oh, it's lovely.
30:43Until you pair come up.
30:44I just can't imagine I was seeing snow this morning and then you've got this.
30:48The excitement is there.
30:50He's bubbly.
30:51He's very complimentary.
30:52He's very loving.
30:53He's very caring.
30:54He's...
30:55I'm his princess.
30:56Before they go, Princess Sonia spies the perfect gift.
31:01Best Christmas decoration.
31:02Well, it's a bit early, Sonia.
31:04After a nice ball baller.
31:05Well, it must be serious.
31:07Here we go.
31:07We're off now for tapas.
31:09We're going for a tapper, but we're going to have a pint.
31:11Right?
31:12Definitely.
31:13Come on, then.
31:14We'll do indeed.
31:16Come on, then.
31:18Nice.
31:28We love it.
31:29We love it.
31:30Cheers.
31:34We chose this place particularly because of the views.
31:36Yeah, definitely a house with a view.
31:40It is getting better.
31:42This corner of the house is the one that's got all the views.
31:44You can see the hills from that side.
31:47You can see the sea behind us.
31:53Having your morning coffee.
31:54Even eating your breakfast.
31:56And just enjoying the day.
31:57Looking at the views.
31:58Maybe sitting with a good book.
32:00A bit of sunbathing as well.
32:02Yeah.
32:02You can do it all.
32:08The picture you see looking out is always changing.
32:11There's always something to look at.
32:13It's not a stagnant view.
32:15It's constantly changing.
32:16It's lovely.
32:22Hank.
32:23Sit down.
32:24Good boy.
32:25You'll be all right.
32:26Heading out of Mazaron.
32:27Yeah.
32:28He's a good boy, isn't he?
32:29Yeah.
32:30He's a good boy, isn't he?
32:31It's dog shelter bosses Mick and Paul with a special passenger in tow.
32:36Perfecto.
32:37Perfecto.
32:38One of their shelter dogs, Hank, is hopefully off to his forever home in La Azoya.
32:43Come on, mate.
32:44There you come.
32:45Good boy.
32:45This could be really good for you at them kennels and home.
32:48To guarantee that Hank's new home is perfect for him, Paul and Mick are delivering the dog personally to his
32:54new owners.
32:55We tried to go to the adoptee's house to check it out.
32:58Just for peace of mind.
32:59We had to check the fences are right.
33:01They can't escape.
33:02We like to see where it's going.
33:03And we like to take them there as well.
33:05So we know if that's going to settle.
33:08Oh, I think he spotted someone.
33:10Who is it?
33:11Who is it?
33:13Animal lovers Dave and Jackie want to re-home Hank.
33:17A new forever home this is.
33:20So where's Rufus?
33:20He's in?
33:21He's in.
33:21He's waiting.
33:22Waiting to meet his brother from another mother.
33:25But the couple already have a rescue dog called Brufus.
33:28When we bring dogs in this sort of situation, we're never really that sure what's going to happen.
33:35So we just hope that it works well.
33:37It's just whether he fits in into the way of life.
33:40Hopefully it'll go, it'll go well.
33:43We're about to find out.
33:45Let's hope Brufus isn't territorial and accepts his new brother, Hank.
33:49What do you think?
33:51Who do you have over quite a bit?
33:53What do you think?
33:54Who is that?
33:56Who is her?
33:58Who is her?
33:58Who is that?
34:00Where are we going?
34:02Who's this?
34:03Who's this?
34:03Who's this?
34:04Who's this?
34:05Who's this?
34:07Who's he?
34:11So far so good.
34:13Yeah, I think they're going to get on really well.
34:15Give them kisses.
34:17Yeah, I think that's really good.
34:19I'm really, really good.
34:22Phew, sounds like Brufus agrees, Jackie.
34:26I love Brufus' place.
34:28Shush!
34:29I'm really happy.
34:30Look, it's very chilled.
34:31I mean, he's a big dog, so, you know, you'd need him to be like this,
34:36you know, in a small place.
34:37So I think it's going to fit him well.
34:39And in our little camper van, aren't you?
34:42You're always a bit apprehensive when you put some two dogs
34:45they've never met together, but they just seem to, like, you know,
34:48I've got on, like, a house on fire.
34:51All that's left is for Paul and mate to check out the apartment.
34:54Let's hope it passes their inspection.
34:57It's nice of him.
34:59It's not big, but we've got, like, the campo there.
35:02So you walk them regularly anyway, don't you?
35:04Yeah, yeah.
35:04I know you do.
35:05It'll get at least two of that.
35:07Yeah.
35:07And although it's a small area, it's massive round,
35:10and then they're out every day, so it'll be great.
35:12It'll be fine.
35:13Lovely views, innit?
35:14Great news.
35:15The apartment has got Paul and Mick's seal of approval.
35:18To see a dog get adopted and to be happy where it's going
35:22means a lot to us, doesn't it?
35:23Yeah, I mean, well, that's what we do it for.
35:25Yeah.
35:26That's the odd point.
35:27It's sad sometimes to see some of them go, but...
35:29What we don't want to see is come back.
35:30We don't have many who come back.
35:32No, no.
35:34Lovely.
35:36Hank will now have a couple of weeks to settle in,
35:38and if all goes well, then Jackie and Dave can officially adopt him.
35:43Well, it's just really lovely to see that he's come in
35:47and he seems to have taken it all in his stride,
35:51and I just don't think it could have gone any better, really.
35:53I'm really pleased.
35:55And we just look forward to actually adopting him now,
35:58because I don't think we'd be calling Paul and Mick back
36:01to come and get him.
36:02I think he's a good addition to our little unit, isn't he?
36:05Our little family unit.
36:06Seeing Hank enter the home with a new home is fantastic.
36:09I mean, you couldn't wish for something better, could you?
36:11We can go away from here, have no worries.
36:13And be very happy.
36:14It's great for Hank now, yeah,
36:16but we have lots more dogs like Hank,
36:18and they all need homes.
36:19As soon as one goes, no one comes in, doesn't it?
36:22Well, that's, yeah.
36:22It doesn't, it's never in the circle.
36:24Job well done, boys.
36:26That says it all, really.
36:28Yeah, we're really pleased.
36:30Enjoy your porsom new family, Hank.
36:37Coming up, will Clark and Karen find the secret ingredient to success?
36:42The steak and the old pirate is now just steak
36:44because I forgot to put in the ale.
36:46And Sonia's whirlwind romance takes a turn.
36:50I think I've lost me fella.
36:52She's your cougar, love.
36:53I'm the cougar.
36:54No, she's the cougar.
37:03I'm just a way to make my scones.
37:07Temperatures are rising in Benidorm Old Town.
37:09If they want to get out of the heat, this is the best place for them.
37:12It's one hour to go before the grand reopening of Clark and Karen's cafe
37:16after extreme Spanish heat closed their business.
37:20I'm going to wait and make steak and ale pies.
37:23Do the steak first.
37:25When I first started to do them, Clark was my guinea pig.
37:28And now he's fed up of pies.
37:30Because he's had to eat every flavour that I do.
37:33Well, you know that expression, who ate all the pies?
37:36I think we know.
37:37That will only take about 20 minutes instead of two hours.
37:41Because of the pressure cooker.
37:44I was just about to open the doors.
37:46Get ready.
37:46We're open again.
37:47I was excited.
37:48Hopefully on a busy day.
37:51Look forward to it.
37:52But two weeks away from the kitchen has taken its toll.
37:56The steak and ale pie is now just steak because I forgot to put in the ale.
38:01What's steak and ale pie without ale?
38:04That's like Laurel without Hardy.
38:06And the customers are starting to arrive.
38:08This could be a disaster for the kitchen cafe.
38:11Hello, how are you?
38:12Good then.
38:13Look how starved you look.
38:15The first order's in.
38:16Stop the press.
38:17It's not a pie.
38:19It's hot as breakfasts.
38:21Yeah, that's the most popular.
38:22It's a good bowl.
38:23All right.
38:24It's the mushrooms.
38:25OK.
38:26But what do the customers think?
38:28We are regular here.
38:30It's a beautiful bar.
38:31Everything's good.
38:32Yeah, we're regular here.
38:33Yeah.
38:33The pie's the thing to come for.
38:35The pies.
38:36The pies have it.
38:37Put in about 10 chunks of beef.
38:40There's nice juicy gravy in it.
38:43That's got my name all over it.
38:45Ooh.
38:45So does their new venture look set to be a slice of Benidorm heaven or a kitchen nightmare?
38:51Busier than we expected.
38:53The kitchen's been steady flow all day.
38:55So, yeah, it's great.
38:56Not such a pie-in-the-sky plan.
38:58After all, if it carries on like this, covering the rent will be a piece of, well, you guessed it.
39:04Time for a siesta.
39:05You must be cream-crackered.
39:07The advantages of living upstairs.
39:09You don't have very far to do.
39:11And no price for guessing what's for dinner tonight.
39:17It's very Spanish.
39:18It's a Spanish one.
39:19We've all got nice bums because of the elves.
39:21Arriving at Benidormadina Pueblo.
39:23I think I'll have a nice one by the time I finish off today.
39:27Lovebird, Sonia and new man Tim have spent an afternoon sightseeing with Pat.
39:33You've come up here because I haven't got a clue which way to go.
39:36Eager to impress, Sonia's treated her guests to a tour of the area's finest attractions.
39:42Look at that.
39:43Beautiful, isn't it?
39:44When you live here, you don't appreciate this.
39:47We take it for granted.
39:49Last orders.
39:51We've got to go up another hill now.
39:52Finding love in their 50s is the start of a new chapter for both Sonia and Tim.
39:58Whose idea was packed on there?
40:00I know.
40:01I've missed you.
40:03It's just nice having that connection where you can go for a meal with someone again.
40:06Because when you are on your own, you cook for yourself and there's that part that is missing.
40:11It's nice just to sit and have a meal with her.
40:13And of course, Pat.
40:15Now that Sonia's been struck by Cupid's arrow, she's playing matchmaker.
40:21We're going to find you another husband for when you move over here.
40:24Oh, no, thank you.
40:25Bye.
40:25I've had four.
40:26Do I need any more?
40:28Yeah, cheers.
40:28Cheers, Sonia.
40:29Cheers, Sonia.
40:29There you go.
40:30I have a caprese.
40:31Oh, I see.
40:32Enjoy.
40:33Oh.
40:34The day ain't over yet and Sonia has one more site she wants to show Tim and Pat.
40:40Should we go down the beach and have a little wander and see?
40:43Do you know what?
40:44I'd love to put my piece in the seat.
40:46Sounds good to me.
40:47Sounds a good idea.
40:48Yeah, we can have a bit of romance.
40:50Come on, then.
40:50It's OK.
40:50Bye, it's OK.
40:52Just round the corner from Sonia's apartment is Torimwele Beach.
40:56I love this beach.
40:58I really love it.
40:59Say, look at the love bears.
41:01Don't you look well?
41:02Don't you look happy?
41:03They certainly do, Pat.
41:05It was a smile that did it.
41:08Amazing.
41:09One hell of a girl.
41:10It's safe to say it's not just the sights that have made an impression on Tim.
41:15You just feel comfortable around her.
41:17She makes you laugh.
41:18She's a wonderful woman.
41:19It's like I've finally found somebody who's a soul mate to me.
41:23I can be myself.
41:25All I need is a hanky on me head, don't I really?
41:27Here we go.
41:28Right.
41:29It's lovely, Pat.
41:32Does it look romantic?
41:34Do you know what you're missing here, Son?
41:35No, you don't.
41:36It was.
41:37I think I've lost me fella.
41:39Swooped from right under your nose, Sonia.
41:41Hey, listen.
41:42I had a toy boy well before you did, so there you go.
41:46Looks like you've got another one, Pat.
41:48Is it cougars?
41:50She's your cougar, look.
41:51I'm the cougar.
41:51No, she's the cougar.
41:52I think I'm the little bit of a goose for you.
41:54Oh, no.
41:55Oh, God.
41:56Never.
41:57The couple may just be two months into the romance,
41:59but today's another unforgettable step
42:02in deepening their bond.
42:03We discussed what we should become,
42:05as in, is it boyfriend, girlfriend, or partners, or...?
42:08And we'd decide on life partners.
42:10Life partners, that's what we agreed on.
42:12There's no, erm, label on the sadness there.
42:15No.
42:16It is what it is, and we're both happy, aren't we?
42:19Yep.
42:19It shows.
42:20We tend to be together for life.
42:22And he's going to be my partner for life.
42:27If Sonia can wrestle Tim away from Pat,
42:29I'm definitely buying that hat.
42:32Don't drop her.
42:37Next time on The Costas,
42:39Jojo's tempting offer could blow her budget.
42:43Oh, God, look at the roof.
42:44Linda's lunch...
42:45Very good.
42:46..gets off to a smashing start.
42:48I'm so sorry.
42:50And there's crosswords for Ed and Louise
42:52when they take on a trial gig.
42:54I'm in charge of the soup today.
42:56Oh, OK.
42:56One of the things you do...
43:00Bye.
43:02Bye.
43:09Bye.
43:12Bye.
43:15Bye.
43:17Bye.
43:19Bye.
43:22Bye.
