Does the truth matter? Does the Bible matter?
Is it all right if I add line upon line to the written word of God? Is it alright if I add one small precept on top of another small precept to the book of Revelation?
Is it alright if the Roman Catholic church adds line upon line?
Is it okay if the Protestant churches add precept upon precept?
Do they? Does the Roman Catholic church and the Protestant churches add line upon line, precept upon precept to the written word of God? What if they do? What if your church adds to the word of God? Would it matter to you if they did? Would it matter to God?
Listen as Dr. Thiel cites scripture after scripture warning delivered by Jesus Christ through the apostles about the dangers of obeying the traditions of men rather than the commandments of God, and teaching others to do the same. Might doing that affect your name being written in the Book of Life?
Watch this video as Dr. Thiel shines the light of Biblical truth on the “traditions of men”.

00:00Greetings, friends. This is Steve Dupuy for the Bible News Prophecy Program with Dr. Bob Thiel,
00:09bringing you news and analysis of world events in light of Bible prophecy.
00:14Dr. Thiel, are traditions of men still being added to the Bible as doctrine?
00:20Not in reality, not in actuality, but there are people who think that it is.
00:25This week, Pope Leo XIV said the following,
00:31We will reflect on this relationship between sacred scripture and tradition.
00:34It's what the Second Vatican Council affirms.
00:38There exists a close connection and communication between sacred tradition and sacred scripture,
00:43where both of them, flowing from the same divine wellspring in a certain way, merge into a unity and tend to the same end.
00:51Ecclesiastical tradition branches out throughout the history through the Church,
00:55which preserves, interprets, and embodies the Word of God.
00:58The Catechism of the Catholic Church refers in this regard to the motto of the Church Fathers.
01:04Quote,
01:05Sacred scripture is written principally in the Church's heart rather than in documents and records.
01:11End quote.
01:12That is in the sacred text.
01:14The Word of God, then, is not fossilized, but is rather a living and organic reality that develops and grows in tradition.
01:20Dear friends, sacred scripture and tradition are so linked together that they cannot stand independently and together,
01:30each in their own way, under the action of one Holy Spirit.
01:34They contribute effectively to the salvation of souls.
01:38Is there really such a thing as sacred tradition?
01:43Well, that expression is not in the Bible.
01:46The Bible warns against adding to the Word of God.
01:51Deuteronomy 4, verse 2.
01:53You shall not add to the Word which I command you, nor take away from it.
01:57Proverbs 30, verse 6.
02:00Do not add to his words, lest he rebuke you and you be found a liar.
02:05And in the New Testament, Revelation 22, starting verse 18.
02:10For I testify to everyone who hears the words of the prophecy of this book.
02:14If anyone adds to these things, God will add to him the plagues that are written in this book.
02:19If anyone takes away the words of the books of this prophecy, God will take away his part from the Book of Life, from the Holy City, and from the things that are written in this book.
02:29Does anyone else accept tradition over the Word of God?
02:34While they wouldn't quite work it that way, yeah, many actually do.
02:38You've got the LDS, they accept the Book of Mormon, which they think is inspired.
02:43You've got some of the Seventh-day Adventists, who say Ellen G. White's writings are inspiration.
02:51Protestants, who accept various traditions, and the Messianic Jews, who accept various traditions, which I believe they do over the Word of God.
02:58But I want to get back to the catechism of the Catholic Church.
03:02It says,
03:03So are the Roman Catholics saying that the extent of their acceptance of sacred traditions
03:29ended with the traditions that were in place prior to the death of the Apostle John?
03:36Yeah, it's kind of funny.
03:37Some of their writings say that.
03:39But the reality is that the Roman Catholics and Eastern Orthodox and Protestants, for that matter,
03:45they all accept later traditions as valid.
03:47Even though their scholars acknowledge they weren't part of the original revelation in the New Testament
03:53or from the original apostles.
03:55But the reality is, tradition is not on par with Scripture.
04:01It's not the proper Christian position ever to say that tradition is equal to or on par with Scripture.
04:09What is the proper position of a Christian?
04:13Well, what the Bible says.
04:15For example, what Paul wrote Timothy in 2 Timothy 3, starting in verse 15.
04:19It says,
04:21You've known the Holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith,
04:26which is in Christ Jesus.
04:28He didn't say you need tradition for salvation.
04:31Nowhere does the Bible do that.
04:33And furthermore, we'll continue with what's there.
04:37He says the Word of God is complete for salvation, part of this.
04:41So no, you don't need tradition, like the Church of Rome teaches.
04:45Look, Paul continues with,
04:47All Scripture is given by inspiration of God and is possible for doctrine, for reproof, for correction,
04:54for instruction, righteousness, that the man of God may be complete,
04:58thoroughly equipped for every good work.
05:01Thoroughly equipped from Scripture, not tradition to do every good work
05:06and make you wise for salvation.
05:09You know, Paul taught Timothy, 2 Timothy 4, verse 2.
05:11Preach the Word.
05:16And to the Romans, Romans 10, verse 17.
05:19He wrote that faith comes by hearing and hearing by the Word of God.
05:23Notice the Word of God, not tradition.
05:25That's to be preached.
05:27And that faith comes the Word of God, not tradition.
05:30I should probably also add that in 2 Corinthians 10, verse 11,
05:35Paul taught that his oral teachings do not contradict his letters.
05:40And in Colossians 2, verse 8, Paul specifically warned about tradition.
05:47He wrote,
05:49This warning from Paul seems to be saying that traditions are not in accordance with Christ may deceive some,
06:09and Christians need to be on guard for that.
06:11And as far as my teachers who claim to be Christian,
06:16Paul warns about them in 2 Corinthians 11, starting in verse 13.
06:22He talks about there are false apostles, deceitful workers,
06:25transforming themselves into apostles of Christ.
06:29And no wonder, for Satan himself transforms himself into an angel of light.
06:34Therefore, it's no great thing if his ministers also transform themselves into ministers of righteousness,
06:40whose end will be according to their works.
06:43Now, Paul ran into some teachers who were supposedly Christian teachers.
06:48They taught idle traditions of men.
06:51In 1 Timothy 1, 6.
06:54Some having strayed have turned aside to idle talk.
06:57So some Christians are accepting idle talk.
07:00And 1 Timothy 6, starting in verse 20, Paul says,
07:04Guard what was committed to your trust, avoiding profane and idle babblings and contradictions of what's falsely called knowledge.
07:13Knowledge from tradition or whatever.
07:15Verse 21.
07:16By professing it, some have strayed concerning the faith.
07:21Would it be accurate to say that in these verses,
07:26Paul is condemning many sacred traditions as being mere babblings and idle talk?
07:33Well, there really is no such thing as sacred traditions.
07:37Okay.
07:37But yes, Christians are supposed to follow Christ.
07:41Now, what did Jesus teach?
07:43John 8, verse 31.
07:46It says,
07:46Now, Jesus was talking to Jews who often accept your tradition above the word of God.
08:03And he wanted to set them free from that.
08:06He also made it clear that true followers were supposed to be set apart by the word of God.
08:11In John 17, 12,
08:13Jesus prayed to the Father and said,
08:15Sanctify them by your truth.
08:19Your word is truth.
08:21Now, in the Old Testament, we read Psalm 119, verse 160.
08:26The entirety of your word is truth.
08:28And in Daniel 10, verse 21, the scripture of truth.
08:32We never read about the tradition of truth.
08:35But what we do know is Jesus said, John 10, 35,
08:39Scripture cannot be broken.
08:41Therefore, people are not supposed to accept tradition and declarations that oppose scripture.
08:46Now, even in Jesus' day, there were religious leaders who sadly, quote,
08:53Love the praise of men more than the praise of God.
08:56John 12, 43.
08:59Now, I want to go to Matthew 15.
09:03A lot of people are familiar with this.
09:05It's about tradition.
09:05Starting in verse 1, it says,
09:08The scribes and Pharisees who are from Jerusalem,
09:10They came to Jesus, saying,
09:12Why do your disciples transgress the tradition of the elders?
09:16For they do not wash their hands when they eat bread.
09:20And Jesus answered and said,
09:21Why do you transgress the commandment of God through your tradition?
09:24Jesus further said to them,
09:27You've made the commandment of God of no effect by your tradition.
09:32Hypocrite.
09:33Well, did Isaiah prophesy about you, saying,
09:37These people draw near to me with their mouth,
09:39And they honor me with their lips,
09:41But their heart is far from me.
09:44And in vain they worship me,
09:46Teaching as doctrines the commandments of men.
09:49And in Mark 7, we basically read the same things.
09:55So Jesus has established this principle
09:58That traditions must always be judged by Scripture
10:02And never placed beside it as an equal authority.
10:07Now, according to Smith's Bible Dictionary,
10:10The fundamental principle of the Pharisees,
10:13People wrapped up in tradition,
10:16Is that the oral law was necessary
10:18To complete and explain the written law given to Moses?
10:23But Jesus condemned them for that.
10:24But we see the same thing
10:26With the Greco-Roman Catholics
10:29And some others.
10:32Now, perhaps I should go back to Isaiah,
10:35Because Jesus referred to Isaiah
10:36In Matthew 15.
10:39So I'm going to go to Isaiah 29
10:41And read verse 13.
10:46Jesus said,
10:47I mean, Isaiah wrote,
10:50Inasmuch as these people draw near to me with their mouths,
10:54And honor me with their lips,
10:55A lot of people claim to be Christians,
10:57But they remove their hearts far from me,
10:59And their fear toward me is taught
11:01By the commandment of men,
11:04Meaning traditions.
11:05So,
11:06Both in the Old Testament and the New Testament,
11:09We're warned traditions are not to be valued
11:11To the degree
11:12That the Word of God is.
11:13But many are afraid to believe
11:15The Word of God over traditions.
11:17By the way,
11:17The book of Revelation warns
11:19That cowards aren't going to make it.
11:22Now,
11:23I want to go to
11:24Exodus 23.
11:27Read verses 1 and 2.
11:30It says,
11:30You should not
11:31Circulate a false report.
11:34Don't put your hand with the wicked
11:35To be an unrighteous witness.
11:37Verse 2,
11:38You shall not follow a crowd to do evil.
11:41Now,
11:41Those who push traditions
11:42Over the Word of God
11:43Are circulating a false report.
11:46Don't tell yourself it's right
11:47To follow a crowd
11:48Who accepts anti-biblical traditions,
11:50Even if they're centuries
11:51Or millennial old.
11:53Now,
11:54Getting back to Isaiah,
11:56I want to go to Isaiah 28.
11:57Pick this up in verse 9.
12:00Where are you supposed to learn doctrine?
12:02Verse 9,
12:03To whom will he teach knowledge?
12:05And whom will he make
12:06To understand this message?
12:08Verse 10,
12:08Precept must be upon precept.
12:10Precept upon precept.
12:12Line upon line.
12:14Line upon line.
12:15Here a little there a little.
12:17Line upon line.
12:18That's the written Word of God.
12:20He didn't say
12:20Tradition upon tradition.
12:24So hence,
12:24Both
12:25The Old Testament
12:26And the New Testament
12:272 Timothy 3.16
12:28Say doctrine is supposed to come
12:31From the Bible.
12:32Now,
12:33Pope Leo
12:3414 referred to
12:35Fathers of his church.
12:37But are their traditions
12:39Supposed to be
12:40Above or equal
12:41To scripture?
12:42No.
12:43Now consider
12:44That in the late
12:462nd century
12:46There was Milito of Sardis.
12:50He's considered to be
12:51A saint by the
12:51Greco-Roman Catholics.
12:53He taught against those
12:54Who clung to traditions
12:56As hypocrites.
12:57And one of the things
12:58He wrote in the
12:592nd century was
13:00Again,
13:01There are persons
13:02Who say
13:02Whatsoever our fathers
13:04Have bequeathed to us
13:05We will reverence.
13:08He says,
13:09You know,
13:10It's not well for a man
13:11To follow his predecessors
13:12If they be those
13:13Whose course
13:14Was evil.
13:16But rather
13:16We should turn
13:17From the path
13:18Of theirs
13:18Lest that which
13:20Befell our predecessors
13:21Should bring disaster
13:23Upon us
13:24Also.
13:26Now Milito is
13:27Considered to be a saint
13:27By the Greco-Roman Catholics
13:29So you'd think
13:29That they would
13:30And a father
13:31By the way
13:32You'd think they would
13:32Heed what he said.
13:37The Bible
13:37Never teaches
13:38That traditions
13:40Of men
13:40Are truth.
13:42Now
13:43No matter how smart
13:44Or religious
13:44Someone might seem to be
13:46The Bible clearly teaches
13:47Romans 3-4
13:48Indeed let God be true
13:50And every man a liar.
13:52You have to believe
13:53The word of God
13:54Over traditions of men.
13:55The Bible never
13:56Suggests that traditions
13:58Are divine
13:59Or sacred.
14:01Scripture teaches
14:01That God's written word
14:03Is sufficient
14:03Authoritative
14:04And complete
14:05For doctrine
14:05And salvation.
14:08Jesus and the apostles
14:09Warned repeatedly
14:10Against elevating
14:10Human tradition
14:11To divine status.
14:14So any system
14:15That places
14:16Later church tradition
14:18As equal
14:19As a source of revelation
14:21Contradicts
14:21The biblical model.
14:23While there's some
14:24Historical uses
14:26For tradition
14:26It always must be
14:28Judged by scripture
14:29And never placed
14:30Above it
14:31Or beside
14:32The word of God
14:33As equal authority.
