00:00Keanu Reeves is attached to star in a movie that first sold as a spec script back in 1993.
00:07That's one year before Keanu starred in Speed.
00:11It's an action movie called Maelstrom, and it is back in action at Netflix.
00:16Now, Jeff Robinoff, who later became the head of film at Warner Brothers,
00:20was an agent at ICM at the time, and he was involved in the sale.
00:23So he's been trying to make this movie for 33 years.
00:26It was finally revived, actually, at Netflix earlier this year
00:31when Alan Richson of Reacher was in talks to star in the film,
00:36but we're exclusively reporting that Keanu Reeves has replaced him.
00:39What's the movie about?
00:40It's about a federal marshal who's protecting the girlfriend of an arms dealer, as you do.
00:47She wants to enter witness relocation, you know, protection,
00:50and basically the arms dealer's henchmen are after Keanu Reeves and the girlfriend,
00:57but there's also a hurricane rolling in, so they have to brave the bad guys and the elements.
01:03Now, the script was freshened up by Mark Bianculli in the meantime,
01:08and the director of the project is Haume Colette Serra.
01:14Hopefully I'm not butchering his name.
01:15He directed Carry On at Netflix.
01:17Now, Carry On, similarly, was an action movie that had been dormant for 11 years
01:23before Netflix revived it, and it ended up becoming the number three most-watched film ever on Netflix.
01:30So at the time, Netflix, in 2024, told producers around town to bring out
01:37your old, dusted-off, high-concept action movies,
01:41and Maelstrom was actually bought as a kind of a response to Die Hard,
01:48and you can read about more stories like these in the Page Six Hollywood newsletter.
