00:00Rough times for the baseball team that plays in the Boogie Down Bronx. The New York Yankees lost their sixth consecutive game, falling to their crosstown rivals, the New York Mets, 12-6 at Citi Field on Saturday afternoon.
00:13All right, so we're going to talk some Yankees baseball, find out what's going with them, what needs to change or changes that need to be made, and we're going to do that with my guy Hector Beauchamp.
00:22He is the founder of Uptown Sports TV and reporter for Latino Sports. Hector, what's going on, man?
00:30I'm trying to hold this together, Dex, but I'm here. Happy 4th of July to everybody that's out there. I hope everybody had a very safe and happy holiday over the past couple of days.
00:39Yes, sir. I hope you're having a good holiday weekend. I would probably ask, but considering the Yankees now lost the first two games of the series to the Mets, the Yankees fan holiday weekend not as joyous as they would like it to be.
00:51But as I mentioned, Hector, and you know this team has lost six games in a row. It has been a rough stretch for the Yankees.
00:59They only have five wins in their last 22 games. Six losses in a row. That is tough through any point of the season. I'll ask you this. Do you think this is rock bottom for the Yankees?
01:11After this 12-6 loss to the Mets, is this rock bottom for the New York Yankees?
01:14I would like to believe that there's no other low that the Yankees can go or go lower than where they are right now. You bring it up within their last 21 games, 23 games, only five wins.
01:25The Yankees, since June 13th, are tied with the Cleveland Guardians for the worst record in all of Major League Baseball with a 5-16 record.
01:33And any stretch you go through, if you're worse than the Colorado Rockies, you're not playing good baseball.
01:38And hopefully they can turn that around.
01:40But Dex, I think it all goes back to, I bring up June 13th, but like right after that Dodgers series, that's when Fernando Cruz got injured.
01:48He went on the I.L. And then you saw the Yankees bullpen getting overused immediately right after that is when Luke Weaver went down.
01:55And since Luke Weaver has come off the I.L., he does not look like the Luke Weaver from before that was pitching like an all-star, you know, on his contract year before he hits free agency.
02:05So hopefully things turn around. The Yankees, they sign Jaime Candelario to a minor league deal, but he's hitting 113.
02:12So, I don't know. It seems like everything that could go wrong for the New York Yankees are going wrong right now, Dex.
02:19Listen, that's kind of what happens when you're in a bad stretch, right?
02:22When you're down bad, everything that could go wrong is going wrong.
02:26Is there something that's most concerning to you? Because you mentioned a lot of stuff there, right?
02:29You mentioned the hitting or lack, I would say, of situational hitting at times we've seen with the Yankees.
02:35You could also mention the bullpen not being as strong as it is.
02:38And then you saw on Saturday, Carlos Rodon, not a strong start. Yankee fans are getting frustrated with him.
02:44Is there one thing maybe out of those three things that's most concerning to you right now?
02:49I would say it's the little mental mistakes that are happening on the base path.
02:53Or even when a player like J.C. Oskara, I love J.C. Oskara, but that catcher interference that happened against Toronto, that hurt us as well.
03:01So it's like the little mistakes that are happening.
03:04You know, they say the baseball is always going to find you, right?
03:07The baseball gods are always going to find you when you're playing bad baseball.
03:10And that's what's happening right now.
03:11You saw in game one, the Yankees had a lead going late into the game.
03:15And then the bullpen gave it up.
03:17And then in this game today, the news came out with Clark Smith being injured.
03:22Carlos Rodon, Aaron Boone tried to get an extra out or not throw out his high leverage relievers
03:28and brought up a rookie who gave up a three-run home run who extended the lead
03:32when Pete Alonso blew it out of proportion.
03:35So I don't know what can go right right now.
03:37Hopefully something does.
03:39But the way that the New York Yankees are playing right now, I don't think any Yankee fan is confident
03:43or confident in this team.
03:45Confidence not strong among the Yankee fans right now.
03:48And you mentioned Clark Smith.
03:50News coming out today, likely to be headed for Tommy John surgery.
03:55How big of a blow do you think that's going to be for this Yankees team right now
03:58as you try to figure things out with pitching?
04:00A big blow, right?
04:02We're already dealing with a season that has no Garrett Cole, right?
04:06You throw on top of it Clark Smith, who was probably having his best season in the big leagues.
04:11His last three starts, you saw something really special from Clark Smith.
04:15But then all of a sudden, from his last start, he left the game early.
04:18He got scratched.
04:19And now the news comes out that he's going to have Tommy John surgery.
04:22And it's a major blow to a starting rotation that's trying to piece it together.
04:25You saw Marcus Stroman in his second start, and he looked pretty solid.
04:29He looked pretty solid in his first couple of starts.
04:31But if you're relying on Marcus Stroman to save your season
04:34or to take your team into a deep playoff run with the way that he has pitched,
04:38and this is no shade to Marcus Stroman,
04:40this team needs to go out there and address the starting rotation.
04:43I know the Yankees next week are going to have Cam Schittler, their top prospect.
04:47I think he's ranked 87th in all of Major League Baseball,
04:50making his debut against the Seattle Mariners.
04:52So hopefully they can find some lightning in the bottom when it comes to Cam.
04:55All right, they need some spark there in the starting rotation.
04:58The reason why they need it, we saw this on Saturday against the Mets.
05:02Carlos Rodon, seven runs allowed in this one.
05:05Where are you with him as the starting pitcher right now?
05:08Some frustration with him among the Yankee fans,
05:11which has always been an interesting relationship.
05:12Started off this season strong, but not so good lately.
05:16Where are you with Rodon?
05:16When you look at Carlos Rodon, and this is what gets me frustrated when it comes to the Yankees,
05:22or just the analytics when it comes behind the New York Yankees.
05:26We've heard it from Brian Cashman.
05:27We've heard it from Aaron Boone that this team relies heavily on the analytics.
05:32And when you look at the numbers, you could split Carlos Rodon's season in two.
05:35One, when JC Escara is behind the plate and his catcher,
05:39and the other one when Austin Wells is behind the plate.
05:42When Austin Wells is there, Carlos Rodon ERA is well over 4.5.
05:46When he has JC Escara behind the plate, I don't know what it is.
05:50I don't know if it's their communication.
05:51But when the two Cubans are together, Carlos Rodon ERA is below three.
05:55So if the Yankees analytics is seeing that, but they're still going with Austin Wells,
05:59with Carlos Rodon, that's what frustrates me desperately.
06:02Because this team loves to preach how they have one of the best analytic departments
06:05that are out there.
06:07But when you have something that is right in your face,
06:08just like DJ LeMay, you playing poor defense at second base,
06:12when that's right in your face, you're making excuses,
06:14and you're just wanting to prove everybody that you're smarter
06:16when the analytics and the stats show you something different.
06:20Oh, Hector, you've set me up to what I wanted to go next
06:24with what you just said.
06:26There's a lot of critiques there, and you're talking about decision-making,
06:29and now we come to the manager because we have to.
06:33Six-game losing streak.
06:35Yankees play the Mets on Sunday in this finale.
06:38I know you don't want to get swept by the Mets.
06:40I'm sure a lot of Yankee fans don't want to get swept by the Mets.
06:43But I'm going to ask this with some nuance to this.
06:46Because we're talking about the Yankees going into the series
06:48against this particular Betts team that were struggling themselves,
06:53that had been banged up.
06:56This is not as strong.
06:57The Yankees had the advantage in the pitching matchups and everything here.
07:01Do you?
07:02I guess a two-part question here for me.
07:04If the Yankees get swept by the Mets this weekend,
07:09there will be seven losses in a row,
07:13would you say that it is time to make a change from the manager and Aaron Boone,
07:19and how much heat should he have on this Yankees June into July swoon?
07:24Should he really be on the hot seat, and is it time to make a change?
07:26Because there's some Yankee fans I'm hearing from that say,
07:28hey, it's time to make a change, and if they get swept this weekend,
07:33he's got to go.
07:34What do you say to that?
07:35Well, Yankee fans have been saying that since the 2021 wildcard game
07:38against the Boston Red Sox.
07:40But I understand those frustrations,
07:42and this is the one thing where I may differ from the majority of Yankee fans.
07:46As much as I have my frustrations or reservations with Aaron Boone,
07:51Aaron Boone's not the reason we don't have a Major League third baseman
07:54at the Major League level.
07:55We just signed Hamir Candelaria, who I pointed out,
07:58has a 113 batting average after he was released from the Cincinnati Reds.
08:02That's not Aaron Boone's fault, right?
08:03It's not Aaron Boone's fault that we don't have an extra reliever
08:06that is in the bullpen.
08:07I think this all falls on Brian Cashman and the analytic department.
08:11And again, Brian Cashman has done an amazing job this offseason
08:14when it comes to pivoting from losing Juan Soto.
08:17Those additions were fantastic.
08:19But at some point, you have to go all the way in
08:21and address the issues that are very glaring and present
08:24and that stick out like a sore thumb.
08:26The fact that the Yankees decided we're going to go into this season
08:29with no Major League ready third baseman.
08:31I love Oswaldo Cabrera, but he's a career backup player.
08:34He could play third base.
08:36And the Yankees are literally 7-23 since Oswaldo Cabrera
08:41has gone out of the lineup since he got injured.
08:43So that's another stat to put in the back of your head.
08:45But I think it was front office malfeasance for them
08:49to come into the season without a third baseman,
08:51hoping that you could go to the trade deadline.
08:53And maybe St. Louis would want to cheapen the asking price
08:56for Nolan Arenado.
08:57That's not the case.
08:58The St. Louis Cardinals are deep in the playoff mix right now
09:01with Nolan Arenado as their third baseman.
09:03And it leaves Brian Cashman and the Yankees
09:05to go back to the drawing board when it comes to third base.
09:08Well, if you don't think Aaron Boone's on the hot seat
09:11and you think a lot of it has to do with the front office,
09:13do you think if the Yankees continue to lose here
09:15that Brian Cashman will then be on the hot seat?
09:17I think he does, and not just Cashman,
09:21but like Fishman, the analytic department.
09:23And yes, Brian Cash, I mean, yes, Aaron Boone
09:25deserves some blame as well,
09:27but Yankee fans have to face reality.
09:29If Aaron Boone is the person that falls on the sword
09:32and is the one that gets punished,
09:37to lack of a better word to say,
09:38or loses his job from this go-around that's going on,
09:42the Yankees are just going to bring somebody
09:43who's just another mouthpiece for the front office
09:45and for the analytic department.
09:48Well, that's never the answer.
09:49A lot of blame, I guess you can say, to go around,
09:52and things might get hotter if the Yankees
09:54do not win on Sunday against the Mets.
09:5712-6 loss to the Mets at Citi Field on Saturday.
10:01That is Hector Bochamp.
10:03Check him out, Uptown Sports TV.
10:05Also, Latino Sports does a great job
10:07covering the New York Yankees as well, too.
10:09Hector, always a pleasure to talk to you.
10:11I hope your holiday weekend gets a little bit better
10:13and things are not so bad in the Boogie Down Bronx.
10:16I hope it does as well,
10:17and hopefully this is one thing Yankee fans can take away,
10:20and I'm going to make this real fast.
10:21Yeah.
10:21Since Brian Cashman has taken over
10:24for the New York Yankees, 1997-1998,
10:26when he took over that position,
10:28the Yankees were valued at $800 million or $900 million.
10:32Right now, in 2025, the New York Yankees
10:35are well-valued over $8 billion,
10:37and Brian Cashman has been a part of that.
10:40Yankee fans may not care about that,
10:41but you know who cares about that, Dexter?
10:43The people who are on the board,
10:45the board of directors,
10:46the people who write the checks,
10:47the sponsors and everything like that.
10:48They care about that.
10:49So for fans, we only measure success by championships,
10:54but you got to understand baseball is a business,
10:55and the Yankees measure success
10:57by the numbers and the commas.
11:00And that's what Brian Cashman
11:01has brought them over these years,
11:02numbers and commas.
11:03Yeah, fans want those World Series titles, though.
11:05You know that for sure.
11:06I know you don't want that yourself.
11:08Appreciate it, Hector.
11:09Thank you, man.
11:10Appreciate you.
