The vice-chancellor of a private university claimed trial at the Air Keroh Sessions Court on Wednesday (Jan 21) for allegedly deceiving the university's former vice-chancellor over the appointment of a chief consultant involving a payment of RM20,000.

00:08on Wednesday for allegedly deceiving the university's former vice-chancellor over the
00:13appointment of a chief consultant involving a payment of 20,000 ringgit. Based on the charge
00:19the 63-year-old accused, Professor Dr. G. Jayakumar, who was then a senior lecturer at the university,
00:26allegedly deceived Jaspal Singh, who was then the vice-chancellor, into appointing a lecturer
00:32from another university as the chief consultant for the curriculum program and academic development.
00:38The accused allegedly arranged the appointment to develop an occupational therapy program module
00:44with a payment of 20,000 ringgit, despite the appointment contravening the individual's
00:50employment contract. The offence was allegedly committed at a university office in the
00:55Malacca Tenga district in May 2021. The charge under section 417 of the penal code carries a jail term
01:04of up to five years, a fine or both if found guilty. Judge Elisabat Payawan granted bail of
01:1120,000 ringgit and fixed March 9 for the next mention of the case.
