00:00An odd-job worker pleaded not guilty at the Ipoh Magistrate's Court to a charge of operating

00:06an unlicensed money-lending business.

00:09Ting Chuan Yew claimed trial to the charge before Magistrate Siti Nora Shariff on Monday.

00:14The 35-year-old was accused of conducting the business by lending money to an unnamed

00:19individual in front of a restaurant at Persiaran Perpaduan Utara Satu in Taman Bercamraya on

00:25October 21st.

00:27The case was framed under Section 5, Subsection 2 of the Moneylenders Act, 1951, which provides

00:33for a maximum fine of one million ringgit or a jail term of up to five years or both

00:38upon conviction.

00:39Deputy Public Prosecutor Noor Akhila Shaza Arifin proposed bail at 7,000 ringgit in one

00:44surety.

00:45Ting, who was represented by Counsel S. Thiban Kumar, asked for bail to be set at 2,000 ringgit.

00:51He said his client had been cooperating with the police and it was not a serious offence.

00:56The court allowed bail at 3,000 ringgit with one surety and fixed the next mention date

01:01on December 23rd.
