Unlicensed money lender claims trial in Ipoh

An odd-job worker pleaded not guilty at the Magistrate’s Court in Ipoh to a charge of operating an unlicensed money-lending business.
Ting Chuan Yau, 35, claimed trial to the charge before magistrate Siti Nora Shariff on Monday (Oct 28).

The case was framed under Section 5, Subsection 2 of the Moneylenders Act, 1951, which provides

for a maximum fine of one million ringgit or a jail term of up to five years or both

upon conviction.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Noor Akhila Shaza Arifin proposed bail at 7,000 ringgit in one

surety.

Ting, who was represented by Counsel S. Thiban Kumar, asked for bail to be set at 2,000 ringgit.

He said his client had been cooperating with the police and it was not a serious offence.

The court allowed bail at 3,000 ringgit with one surety and fixed the next mention date
