A couple has been charged at the Magistrate's Court in Sepang over the murder of University of Cyberjaya student Maniishapriet Kaur Akhara last month.

M. Sri Darvien and D. Thineswary, both 19, appeared before Magistrate Khairatul Animah Jelani on Thursday (July 10).

00:00A couple has been charged at the magistrate's court in Sepang over the murder of University
00:07of Cyberjaya student Manisha Preet Kaur Akhara last month. M. Sri Darvian and D. Thinaswary,
00:14both aged 19, appeared before Magistrate Kairatul Anima Jalani on Thursday. Sri Darvian was accused
00:21of murdering 20-year-old Manisha Preet at a condominium in Cyberjaya between 9.11 p.m.
00:28and 11.31 p.m. on June 23. He was charged under Section 302 of the Penal Code and faces the
00:36death sentence or imprisonment between 30 and 40 years, and liable for whipping if convicted.
00:43Meanwhile, his girlfriend Thinaswary was accused of abetting him in the murder at 12.30 p.m.
00:49at the same place and day. She was charged under Section 109 of the Penal Code,
00:56read together with Section 302 of the same code, and faces the death sentence or imprisonment
01:02between 30 and 40 years he convicted. Both accused said they understood the charges.
01:08However, no plea was recorded as the cases are under the jurisdiction of the High Court.
01:14Deputy Public Prosecutor Raja Zaisul Farida Raja Zaharuddin stated that the prosecution was not
01:20offering bail. Lawyers M. Manoharan and Mohamed Baharuddin Mohamed Arif, representing Darvian
01:26and Thinaswary respectively, sought for the case to be expedited. Manoharan asked the prosecution
01:32to transfer the case to the High Court as soon as possible while Mohamed Baharuddin mentioned
01:37that the case had gone viral. DPP Raja Zaisul, in her reply, said the prosecution required some time
01:44to obtain documents before seeking a case transfer to the High Court. Magistrate Khairatul Anima
01:50then fixed the case for mention on September 11th.
