00:00The health of jailed Ugandan opposition figure Kiza Besidje has reached a critical and deteriorating
00:07state, his party said on Tuesday. In a statement, the People's Front for Freedom said Besidje was
00:13driven overnight from Luzira prison to a medical facility in Kampala. Since November 2024, the
00:2069-year-old veteran politician has been detained in a maximum security jail in the capital over
00:25allegations he plotted to overthrow the government. He is said to be tried over treason charges he
00:31says are politically motivated. On Tuesday, the People's Front for Freedom also demanded
00:36unrestricted access to Besidje by his personal doctors and family. The party said the prominent
00:42opposition figure is being denied his own right to medical dignity. A spokesman for Uganda's prison
00:47system denied that the politician was in failing health. He instead described Besidje's overnight
00:53trip to see a doctor at a general check-up.
