00:01Ugandan opposition figure Kiza Besije has petitioned court seeking orders to stop his detention and
00:08prosecution. Besije, who has been in detention since his abduction from Kenya's capital in
00:14November 2024, argues that the Ugandan state has violated his rights. In an application to
00:21the High Court, he names the chief of Uganda's military, also the son of the president Mohos
00:27Keine Rougaba as a respondent. In statements on X last year, Keine Rougaba threatened to hang
00:33Besije for what he called an attempt on his father's life. Besije and an aide have been
00:40charged with treason with the trial set to kick off on Thursday. Human rights groups and the
00:45Ugandan opposition say the charges are politically motivated. Besije, a former personal doctor to
00:53Ugandan president Yori Museveni and his political opponent for more than 25 years has been in
01:00and out of jail since he first challenged Museveni for the presidency in 2001.
