00:00On this week's World of Saltwater Fishing, I have DeMarc Six off of Key West in the fabulous Florida Keys,
00:05but we have a very small weather window.
00:07Find out what it's going to take to adapt and catch fish in a short period of time.
00:12Stay tuned.
00:13Here we were at the Perry Marina,
00:43in Key West with about a four, maybe five hour weather window to go out and catch some fish.
00:52Afterwards, the wind was predicted to go up to around 30 knots and it wasn't going to look good for about three or four more days.
00:59So what to do to catch fish?
01:02Joining me, Diego Toyran and Armani Garcia.
01:06We started looking for the migratory blackfin tuna that normally this time of year, right around Halloween, they move in.
01:12And every year, just south of Key West, before we hit the first wreck, there's a pretty well-known spot called the Rubble Pile,
01:18a spot that many years ago they threw different debris from different construction sites and whatnot,
01:24in about 200 foot of water.
01:26And there's enough debris down there that it holds a pretty good amount of fish throughout the year.
01:30So we charge out to the first wreck, and you're reading a structure to try to find the blackfins.
01:48That was going to be our goal on these wrecks.
01:50And there was a lot of life on these structures, with the exception of blackfins.
01:57But we decided, let's give it a workout, see what's happening.
02:00Down below were a lot of toothy fish, and Diego happened to catch a small king on his jig.
02:09Looking for tunas.
02:10If you're taking a guess, what are you guessing?
02:13A jack.
02:14Runner.
02:15Yeah.
02:15Big runner.
02:15Here it comes.
02:17What do we have this time here?
02:18Oh.
02:19You got the, uh...
02:20Mackerel.
02:21The king.
02:22Little king.
02:23Yeah, you do.
02:25Well, he's a king mackerel.
02:26They have to be 24 inches.
02:29We'll see what he is.
02:30Oh.
02:32There you go.
02:32Yeah, he finally cut.
02:33Almost.
02:34Got him, though.
02:35Proved you had a lot of those fish down there that were just eating those jigs right off.
02:39So, uh, Armani drops down, and he hooks up solidly.
02:45And that rod bends, and he's in a heck of a fight.
02:51Oh, yeah.
02:53Oh, that's the AJ.
03:01That's the AJ, brother.
03:06Oh, yeah, that's a good one.
03:07What does it feel like, AJ?
03:10I think so, man.
03:11It's a strong fish.
03:12It is very strong fish.
03:16To any consolation, we're off the wreck.
03:18Yeah.
03:20Oh.
03:21Here he comes, George.
03:26Big Cuda.
03:27Oh.
03:28With the wrong flavor.
03:31And a big one.
03:32I'm not surprised you held onto him.
03:34Tell you what, he's pretty good size.
03:35Hey, that's a monster Cuda.
03:36I'll get the rod out.
03:44Look at the size of that.
03:46That's a tank.
03:46Check that out.
03:47That is a tank.
03:51Yeah, that's a...
03:52Come on, give me a little mug shot here.
03:55You gotta hand this thing up here.
03:57It's a pretty big-sized barracuda.
03:59So Armani pulls in this monster barracuda, okay?
04:14And one of the biggest cudas I've seen in quite some time.
04:18Photographed it, videoed it the whole bit, and sent it back on its way.
04:22George Poveromo's World of Saltwater Fishing is proudly brought to you by Penn.
04:26Let the battle begin.
04:28Mako.
04:29You'll find them where the fish are.
04:31Bass Pro Shops and Cabela's.
04:33Your adventure starts here.
04:34Mercury Marine.
04:35Go boldly.
04:37George.
04:38With the slow pick and the Atlantic wrecks off Key West in the Florida Keys,
04:44and thoughts of switching over to yellow tailing, Armani hooks up once again.
04:49So with that, we bounced around different wrecks just trying to find any black fins which were scarce.
04:55But there was a lot of activity, and we still dropped down.
04:59And Armani hooks up again on his monofilament spin outfit
05:04and brings in a beautiful yellow jack.
05:08There you go.
05:08How come you're letting him hook all the real big ones?
05:11Telling me.
05:11I'm going to get on his side now.
05:12I'm telling you.
05:14I don't think he's going to let you in that corner.
05:15Oh, there he goes.
05:17There goes the run, huh?
05:18All right.
05:19Were you on the bottom midway up?
05:20Where were you?
05:21You know, he was about 50 foot off the bottom.
05:23You're one of the few people I know that actually do this jigging on wrecks using monofilament
05:29rather than the braid line.
05:30Yeah.
05:31Why is that?
05:33You know, the monofilament has a bit of stretch to it.
05:35And in some cases, when these fish, they decide to take a quick, hard run,
05:40that little bit of stretch is really forgiving, and it helps you keep that fish on the hook.
05:44Oh, nice yellow jack.
05:47Nice yellow jack.
05:48I got a net.
05:48Let me get a net.
05:50We got sashimi here, fellas.
05:52Hang on.
05:52Is he hooked well?
05:53Pretty fish.
05:53He's barely hooked in the lip.
05:55Oh, sorry.
05:56Get him back to you.
05:57That's what I want to hear.
05:58Nice, George.
05:59I know what you're going to be cooking up later for us.
06:04Oh, yeah.
06:05Some sashimi here.
06:06Take your catch.
06:07Well, we got a good one here, George.
06:08He's not tuna, but we'll take him.
06:10And he wanted to catch a blackfin or cereal mackerel or a yellow jack, and he wanted to make
06:19poke with it.
06:20He had all the ingredients in boat, and that was going to be your lunch.
06:23So, he was very happy when we brought this yellow jack in and put it on the ice.
06:31So, we decided to wrap it up and shoot west to see if we could get on some nice yellowtail
06:36action.
06:37That's typically where I like to take my charters when we go for yellowtail is on the reef out
06:41west.
06:42Let's charge west.
06:43Let's go on the hook and do some yellowtailing.
06:45We pushed through a couple light rain showers.
06:48So, whereas we had some nice calm water when we were hitting the wrecks, as we got down
06:53to our spot, we were looking at a good two to four with a crisp wind on it now that was
06:58starting to build up.
07:00So, was that weather window starting to close on us earlier than expected?
07:05Let's get on the hook, get the chum bag out.
07:07Let's start getting some yellowtail in this boat.
07:09So, right away, we got on the hook, and Armani took us to a great area where he normally
07:14takes his charters.
07:15And right away, we deployed the chum, and they came right up.
07:20We're looking for that big one further back.
07:22Sometimes they get behind the smaller ones, so we're playing with that.
07:30We're looking for that big boy.
07:33What you got there, George?
07:34Yellow.
07:35That's what it is.
07:37And it's an incoming right now.
07:38We got some table fare.
07:47That's what we needed.
07:48We had to secure the pokey.
07:51And we didn't do it with this.
07:52We did it with something else coming up soon.
07:54The Perry Hotel Key West is a casual, yet well-appointed resort with five-star service
07:59and amazing dining.
08:01Whether it's a poolside snack, it's a salty oyster dockside bar and grill, or a cook-your-catch
08:06dinner at Matt's Stock Island Kitchen and Bar.
08:10There's even a couple must-do local restaurants right around the corner on Stock Island.
08:14Rustica's for fine Italian fare and the famous Hogfish Grill.
08:18When visiting the Perry, you'll find my Mark VI docked downstairs at the Adjoinia Marina.
08:25George Poveromo's World of Saltwater Fishing is proudly brought to you by
08:29Simrad.

08:45George, we'll be right back.
08:48It's back to yellow-tailing west of Key West in the Florida Keys.
08:52I'm with Diego Toyran and Armani Garcia, and our weather window is closing rapidly.
08:59Now, you get guys like Diego and Armani.
09:03And Diego, in particular, after his stint as a firefighter, he did a lot of commercial fishing
09:09for yellow-tailing and groupers, so these guys both have this all down to a science.
09:14Tons of chum, very light leaders, making everything flow back at the same rate as that chum, and
09:21just having fun.
09:23And it was like any time you could free line a bait back, you were on.
09:28And about as fast as you can get anything in the water.
09:35Almost like fishing in a stocked trout pond or something.
09:39So the keeper is a little close.
09:53We'll let this one go.
09:56Yeah.
09:57He was a little bit better, but he's still 11 and a half.
10:05We're going to let him go.
10:07We had doubles.
10:08We had triples.
10:09And that's the way this whole pace kept going.
10:12It was catching nonstop.
10:14So yellow-tailing was hot.
10:21We caught plenty of yellow-tail, but they just weren't quite the right size.
10:24Instead of spending more time and looking for another hump to find these yellow-tail,
10:28we decided that we were going to try something a little different.
10:31We had weather approaching us, and I told George I had just the idea to put some fish
10:35on the table and something specifically to get that pokey going.
10:39So the other part of what we wanted to do was something just a little bit different.
10:45Run into Hawk's Channel itself and start trolling these small rappel of lures,
10:51swimming lures, over the shallow rocks and reefs inside Hawk's Channel.
10:58These plugs work great anywhere from five feet of water out to the edge of the reef,
11:04you know, on 50, 60 foot of water.
11:05We typically troll ones that dive down from three feet to 20 feet.
11:10Today, the top water plugs were the key.
11:13We started trolling the rappel of lures.
11:15I mean, right away, we get a hit.
11:17It was a yellow-tail snapper.
11:19Pretty much the same size we were catching on the reef.
11:23We brought him in, released him, and all of a sudden, George, on that side,
11:28he gets what we were looking for, yellow jack.
11:31Oh, that's the one.
11:32Nice one, George.
11:33That's the one.
11:38And I'm out of the water, George, so you got to get that one.
11:41Oh, my.
11:42This thing just woke me up like no tomorrow.
11:46Nice.
11:46What a big yellow jack?
11:47I think so.
11:50You got the net?
11:52Yeah.
11:52Yeah, it's a yellow jack.
11:52Oh, yeah.
11:53You can surf him up.
11:54You mean more ceviche?
11:56Here he comes.
11:58He's not going to be surfed anymore.
12:00Got to work him up now.
12:01Here he comes.
12:07What a yellow jack.
12:09Nice.
12:10Nice yellow jack.
12:11You hear your Hawks Channel.
12:15He was taking it easy, coming in here, throwing his little small rapolas, light tackle.
12:20You know, dodging the rain a little bit in here, but just going to show you some of the good fishing you can do just going light, just having fun.
12:27Hawks Channel is a navigable nearshore belt spanning along the Florida Keys' Atlantic side.
12:33Averaging 10 to 30 feet deep, its assorted rocks and patch reefs provide habitat and foraging zones for numerous marine species.
12:41The cooler water is a winner, seeing an influx of value into Hawks Channel and, in turn, snappers, groupers, mackerel, and other species.
12:49The best bet, troll small swimming plugs across structures and around bait being preyed upon.

13:14Consistent cruise, 3,800 RPMs.
13:18Speed, 40 miles an hour.
13:20Total fuel burn, 82 gallons.
13:22The high horsepower performance of Mercury's V10 400 horsepower Verado outboards is attributed, in part, to their naturally aspirated 5.7 liter block, which delivers exceptional torque throughout their entire operating range.
13:38A prime example of the torque increase were the 21-inch props on the inline six-cylinder 400 horsepower Verados previously on the Mark VI.
13:47The new V10 Verados are now paired with 25-inch pitch Revolution X props.
13:53Top end speeds also increased, along with overall fuel economy.
13:58The 695-pound outboards can make their horsepower on 87-octane fuel.

14:30You know, trolling these plugs is not something that you typically see done here in the Keys.
14:37But through my years of guiding, I've found it very effective, especially when the bite is not quite right on the reef.
14:45The current's a little off.
14:46You could really make great use of these trolling plugs.
14:49So we pulled up the Simrad.
14:52And you had the C-MAP reveal.
14:54And you had their high-definition bathymetric chart.
14:57And you see such a vivid outline of Hawk's Channel in the exact spots that you wanted to troll over.
15:05And guess what?
15:06A cereal mackerel showed up.
15:08A mackerel.
15:08Look, look, look, look.
15:09Oh.
15:10We got a nice cereal on this one, too.
15:13Oh, wow.
15:14That is a nice cereal.
15:15We got a nice cereal.
15:25Wait a minute.
15:26Let's say it's a sure thing here.
15:28Get him in.
15:29Get him in.
15:30All right.
15:31There you go.
15:31Good, good, good.
15:32With a free hand, grab that pliers and unhook the rappler.
15:37Captain.
15:38Hawk's Channel is coming alive.
15:40Something interesting about the Yellow Jacks is they're a schooling fish, and they stay pretty tight-knit.
15:46So when we catch one, you'll see three, four, five, or six follow up the other ones.
15:50And they'll follow those fish right up to the boat.
15:53A lot of times, giving the other anglers on the boat a chance to catch one or even the whole school sometimes.
15:58The Yellow Jack came and ate him.
15:59Oh, yeah.
15:59Oh, Yellow Jack.
16:00Right here, look.
16:01Yellow Jack's eating him.
16:02He's a big one, too.
16:03He's got a real use behind.
16:04It might be more behind him.
16:04You just got upgraded there, George.
16:05Huh?
16:06You got upgraded.
16:07In a good way.
16:07Yeah.
16:08Oh, man, what a sight that is.
16:11Went from cloth to leather, like two seconds.
16:14Wow.
16:15I got the net when you're ready.
16:16All right.
16:18Oh, they're doing behind.
16:19Diego, throw behind this one.
16:20The school's right behind him, Diego.
16:21Throw right behind there.
16:22Cast.
16:22Right next to him.
16:23Let's net him.
16:25And he's an inbounder.
16:27There's the other one hanging with him.
16:29Right here, Diego.
16:30Oh, he just came out.
16:31You toss him back there.
16:32Throw out there.
16:32Fancy, he's going to reel it in fast.
16:34Hey, he's hooked up.
16:35Nice one, Diego.
16:36Yeah.
16:36About time, Diego.
16:38There we go.
16:39Just flipping, man.
16:40Bring him in.
16:41Come over here, Diego.
16:43You know what?
16:43I don't mind telling you.
16:44Mine's bigger.
16:45Yeah, you're right.
16:46I'll even give you three feet.
16:47Hit me at the camera more.
16:48I'll come back here.
16:48Mine's still bigger.
16:49Okay.
16:50This time.
16:50This time.
16:51This time.
16:52We're not done yet.
16:55Oh, boy.
16:56Look at those Rapala X-Raps again.
16:58Deadly.
16:59They are deadly.
17:00They are deadly.
17:01They are deadly.
17:02George said it.
17:02I got a bigger one.
17:04And there he came.
17:05He landed him.
17:05He landed him.
17:06He landed the biggest one of the day.
17:08And I'm sure we would have kept on fishing.
17:10There would have been a lot more.
17:11But George says, that's it.
17:12We got dinner.
17:13We got pokey.
17:15ACR Electronics just introduced the latest advancement in electronic flares.
17:19The Rescue Flare Pro electronic boat flare incorporates SOS distress signaling technology by utilizing
17:27red-orange and cyan LEDs combined with an infrared component.
17:32The result is a high level of visibility and substantial burn time.
17:36With his accompanying daytime distress flag, ACR's Rescue Flare Pro is certified to meet Apple
17:42Bowl United States Coast Guard requirements, allowing them to be carried in lieu of traditional
17:48pyrotechnic flares in the United States.
17:50So we trolled the plugs for quite a bit, and we did very well.
17:55We caught all the fish that we needed that day.
17:57We wrapped it up as we were still in the middle of quite a rainstorm.
18:00And I knew a beach that wasn't far away.
18:03I took George and set up something special with those Yellow Jacks.
18:16The heck we're going into Publix and buying all the boar's head meats and everything, which
18:21we had, because once he puts out that fresh fish, you know, the boar's head is going to
18:26stay in its package.
18:27We laid the Yellow Jacks, beautiful white meat.
18:29And I wanted to do something a little different than a traditional ceviche, so I wanted to
18:33do a pokey today.
18:35I had a great mix of scallions, sesame oil, ponzu sauce, and a great treat on the boat.
18:42And, you know, when you're on the boat, you don't have everything you have in your kitchen,
18:45so again, we made it work.
18:46We mixed it in a Ziploc bag.
18:48George had some solo cups, and we had a great feast on the boat, and we didn't feel like
18:53we were missing out on anything.
18:54And we made this little weather window work in our favor, and to cap it off, it was definitely
19:01the Yellow Jacks pokey that just made a sensational trip that much greater.
19:07And a quick run in, we were all tied up at the Perry, tidying up the Mark VI.
19:12Here's this wind coming up the whole bit.
19:14You know, at that point, who cares?
19:16We made our weather window work, and it worked in our favor this time.
19:19Well, another great day here in the Florida Keys.
19:21We ended the day, you know, we didn't catch, like, the blackfin tuna, they didn't show up,
19:26but it's okay.
19:27We made it up with the Yellow Jack and the pokey.
19:29So we picked up and beat the weather window.
19:32I mean, we got lucky.
19:33And sometimes that's the way it works out.
19:35Either you get in time, or it catches you, get a little wet, but it's okay.
19:39You make the best of it.
19:40The beauty of Key West is that, for the most part, if you have some weather moving in,
19:46you have opportunities to fish, depending on what wind direction is going on at the time.
19:52You have the Gulf side.
19:53You have the Atlantic side.
19:54You've got the lee of certain islands.
19:57And there's usually a place that you could fish.
19:59So if you're in a weather window situation, you know, for the most part,
20:04you better hope it's in Key West, because more times than not,
20:06you're going to sneak through that weather window, as we did in Key West,
20:10without a doubt, shine brightly because of its fishing opportunities.
