00:01On this week's World of Saltwater Fishing, we have the Mark VI down off of Cudjo in the lower Florida Keys.
00:06We're going to mix it up. We're talking offshore.
00:08We're going to get on the reefs, and we might even chase a few mangrove snapper up a local canal.
00:13Don't miss this episode.
00:14George Poverumo's World of Saltwater Fishing.
00:31Big fish don't stand a chance.
00:33Here we are once again off of Cudjo in the lower Florida Keys, and the beauty of this area,
00:48it's a big pine in the lower Florida Keys, and especially in September, the time that we were here filming a show,
00:54is that it's considered the Keys' slow season.
00:58The tourists aren't here in any great numbers, and that means when you go offshore, inshore, or even up the local canals,
01:04you're not going to see that many boats competing with you.
01:07It's really a good time to be down here.
01:09And I had the Mark VI docked up behind a friend's home.
01:12We had my visiting angler, Sloan Endick, from New Jersey, going to be fishing with me for a few days.
01:19So George and I first connected when Florida Keys Tourism put out a contest,
01:23and you had to make a video explaining why you should win a Keys fishing trip with George Poverumo.
01:29And it just so happened, at the time when this contest was going on,
01:32my dad and I, we were actually down in the Florida Keys.
01:35Mother nature had different plans for us.
01:38We had a bunch of charters planned, got canceled.
01:40It was raining and blowing, and my dad said,
01:44hey, this is the perfect time for you to make your video and see what happens.
01:47Unfortunately, she was in Isla Morada with pouring rain.
01:50It was a storm system that moved over and just rained her out for three days solid.
01:57Long story short, did not win the contest,
01:59but George ended up reaching out to me through social media
02:03and ended up inviting me to speak at his Jersey seminar series.
02:07And that's how we got connected.
02:09And now we're here.
02:10I've been fishing since I was a kid.
02:12I started from a really young age.
02:14My dad was the one who got me into it.
02:16So I think just to kind of look back and see where you started to where you are now,
02:20when it comes to fishing and all the different experiences
02:23and different species you've come across, it's pretty amazing.
02:26But fishing, to me, it's, I think it's an escape from so many things.
02:30Beautiful weather.
02:42I mean, this is what the Florida Keys really want to portray when you come down here.
02:47We started to idle out out of the Kudjo area.
02:50And the goal was to go offshore and look for dolphin or mahi.
02:55So first day, we headed offshore.
02:57And before we even started fishing, it was already such a treat for me
03:00because back home, when we go offshore, I'm waking up at 2 in the morning
03:04and the boat's leaving at 3 a.m. to head out there.
03:07And when I got down here, we were leaving around 7 and I got to sleep in.
03:11It was great.
03:12So it was already a great day for me.
03:14Jumped up on plane.
03:15And my thought was to run offshore, keep an eye out for birds, debris, weed lines,
03:24loader with bait, the typical signs that would lead you to mahi.
03:28And I also had some intel through Ross Ocean Fishing Forecast analyses
03:31that showed some really good water circulation features just on the inside of Woods Wall.
03:38So on our way offshore, we stopped and we came across a piece of debris.
03:42It was a huge, round piece of structure, and we immediately saw mahi on it.
03:47Yep.
03:48And I'm on some, too.
03:49Let's see what I have.
03:50That was quick.
03:51Guess what?
03:52I have mahi, too.
03:53I see them all on top.
03:55All right.
03:55So let's see if we got the school around.
03:57I got one on the chugger.
03:58This is a nice-sized fish.
04:00You're doing good now.
04:01If you see any schoolies, put the rod in the holder.
04:04Okay.
04:04And just keep an eye and we'll grab another spinner.
04:06Yep.
04:06Okay.
04:07They're here.
04:08I don't see any friends with this guy yet.
04:09Oh, that's what you want.
04:11She throws the squid hooks up instantly.
04:13I throw this, uh, this grapple of chugger and, man, it gets destroyed.
04:17I'm surprised I'm wearing her in the air.
04:19So what I'm going to do, Sloan, who's feeling lucky here?
04:22Watch, I'm going to flip them and I'm going to get you caught, too, you know?
04:32What is it?
04:36We're all in the box.
04:41We're going to put some ice on them.
04:47It's amazing.
04:47I can't believe that we're catching fish so close to home.
04:50Not how it is back in Jersey.
04:52We got to run super far to get fish like this.
04:55So this is such a treat here.
04:57These Jersey people are so easy to impress.
04:59Parmer's Resort and Little Torch is a favorite of ours when visiting the Lower Florida Keys.
05:07Parmer's features a collection of cottages, suites, efficiency studios, and rooms spread out over five acres.
05:14Situated on Pine Channel, they have lagoon dockage, a pool, and a beautiful white sand beach.
05:19Speaking of beaches, right down the street is Kiki's Sandbar and Grill, where fresh seafood, tasty drinks, and live music can be enjoyed in a tropical setting.
05:29Kiki's will even cook your catch.
05:31They've prepared our mahi, blackened, grilled, and fried.
05:34Boondock's Grill and Draft House is also close by.
05:38Boasting the largest tiki bar in the Florida Keys, Boondock's specializes in fresh seafood, salads, and burgers.
05:44There's live entertainment, televised sporting events, and even an 18-hole mini golf course.
05:50George Poveromo's World of Saltwater Fishing is proudly brought to you by Penn.
05:54Let the battle begin.
05:56Mako.
05:57You'll find them where the fish are.
05:59Bass Pro Shops and Cabela's.
06:01Your adventure starts here.
06:02Mercury Marine.
06:03Go boldly.
06:05George.
06:09Thanks to a mahi blitz in our way offshore,
06:11the skunk was removed from the Mark VI early on.
06:15The positive vibes are overflowing.
06:17I'm fishing with New Jersey's Sloan Endick off the lower Florida Keys.
06:21We continued on looking for another find the fish, and ultimately we go on the troll.
06:26We were around 680, maybe 700 feet, still on the inside of Woods Wall,
06:31but the conditions look good here, so out goes the spread of trolling lures.
06:36Pick up the speed, 9, 10 miles an hour or so, and just started working towards the west,
06:42zigzagging, tight to that line, moving out, and conditions look good.
06:46I mean, we stayed on this line for probably a good half hour, but not a thing.
06:50It wasn't becoming productive, so we had to make the switch,
06:53and the switch was to pull the lures in and put the weedless value out.
06:57So that was a good choice.
06:59We're working through these scattered patches of weeds,
07:02and then all of a sudden, bam, bam, the two rods go down at once.
07:06Doubled up!
07:08I think I'm over you.
07:12A couple nice fish.
07:15Yeah, these look like good ones.
07:16I'll keep mine hanging out there, and I'm going to let you work your way in.
07:20I'm going to put mine in the holder back here,
07:22because I think I'll be assisting you shortly.
07:25That's a nice one.
07:25Good one.
07:27Now I'm gating on him.
07:28Keep doing it, Sloan.
07:30Keep Sloan.
07:31Keep Sloan.
07:31Keep going.
07:32Wind, wind, wind.
07:33Keep going.
07:34Wind, wind.
07:35Wind, wind.
07:39Sloan, there's your beautiful mahi.
07:41Come here.
07:42That's awesome.
07:43Well, I got one here, so you hold it.
07:45Yeah.
07:45Let me go do my thing.
07:47Wow.
07:48Easily my biggest mahi right here.
07:53How's your confidence level of the gaff?
07:55I always get very leery when I'm with somebody that I don't really know how they make it happen.
08:02I think I got it.
08:03The good thing is we got yours in there, and I got confidence in you.
08:06You know, from this morning that I learned, you have a size, you wear size nine shoes.
08:17I know what you're going to say.
08:17Which we figured out it's the perfect size for you to start doing a deck.
08:22Putting the Jersey girl to work, I see.
08:24Hey, you're my guest angler.
08:25Hey, you're my guest angler.
08:27After boating two more mahi and releasing a big barracuda, we happened upon a very pleasant surprise.
08:34And we spot something pretty big in the distance.
08:39On these calm days, you could see things an incredible distance.
08:44And it's big and long and bouncing up on the surface.
08:47So let's head over to that way.
08:49We said, hey, this is going to be good.
08:50Mahi as well as maybe wahoo.
08:52And I said, all right, we're going to troll right alongside this and expecting to see just a mahi charge out or one of those deep plugs get drilled by a wahoo.
09:01We go right by it.
09:02And I'm looking.
09:03I don't see any mahi, but we see some triple tail.
09:06Make one good pass, and you're holding your breath.
09:08You're waiting for one of those reels to sing, but nothing.
09:11And you think, what happened?
09:12Pulled up real close to it.
09:14We could already see a whole little pack of triple tail right on it.
09:16And everyone got super excited.
09:18And we broke out the rods.
09:20And it was game on from there.
09:22I don't know what I can do.
09:25Oh, you're going to have to find them here.
09:27We're going to have to help you here.
09:28Wait, I got them.
09:28Oh, you got them out, all right?
09:29Just take your time.
09:30Take your time with them.
09:32I'll get in there.
09:47Nice.
09:48I'll have to get this one up here and take a check on this one here.
09:53Oh, he looks.
09:54He hooked them well.
09:56Yeah.
09:56There's the one.
09:57Yeah, he's over 19.
09:59Right at 19.
10:00There's the one.
10:01That's it.
10:01Awesome.
10:02All right.
10:02Well, here.
10:03Watch out.
10:04He has a razor of gill plates.
10:05All right.
10:05Be careful.
10:06All right.
10:07First one was tad short.
10:09Found the bigger one on the piece.
10:11Keeper triple tail.
10:12So, at that point, we had, you know, quite the catch.
10:21It was time to head back.
10:22So, we charged back.
10:23Now, the twist to all this.
10:26When our video team was doing the underwater of this find, and you could see all the fish,
10:33barjacks, et cetera, triple tail, we were stunned when we looked at the footage later
10:38to see a half a dozen wahoo in the background under that find.
10:45So, we sort of missed out on that one.
10:47We had our, I guess, opportunity to try to convert them early.
10:50Maybe they weren't feeding or whatever, but we had no wahoo encounter.
10:55But I'll tell you what, when we saw that footage later, our stomachs went, ooh.
11:01Wahoo notoriously stack deep in the floating structure, line and way tambourish bait and
11:06small pelagics, seeking sanctuary by these finds.
11:09Just because wahoo aren't seen, while baleen mahi are picking off a triple tail, don't assume
11:14they're not around.
11:15Best bets?
11:16Troll a deep diving plugger bait around floating structure.
11:19Drop a flutter jig 100 feet down and race it back to the surface, or chum with chunks of
11:24baleen mahi, then free line one on a long shank hook.
11:27In artbypasta.com, from catch to canvas, rendering.
11:31Catch to canvas, baby.

11:50With Starbrite.
11:52George, we'll be right back.
11:55As our offshore adventure came to a close, it was now time to treat our Jersey girl, Sloan
11:59Endick, to some refaction.
12:01We're fishing off the Lower Florida Keys.
12:03The beauty of Big Pine in the Lower Florida Keys is the real estate to go in any direction
12:08to find fish.
12:10Day two, west of Key West was our destination.
12:13After trying multiple spots, we finally found the right one for Sloan to enjoy a yellowtail
12:18bite.
12:18Well, there you go, your first yellowtail.
12:20Yeah.
12:21You know, we call that an aquarium-sized fish.
12:24You definitely got to let that one go.
12:27All right.
12:28Starting to grow on you.
12:30They're getting a little bigger.
12:31It's always a plus.
12:33I'm still working with small ones.
12:34Let's find some big ones.
12:35Ready?
12:35Let's do it.
12:36One, and two, and three.
12:38Get back in there.
12:39And we just started bailing the yellowtail, but the problem, these were all small fish.
12:44So we're catching and releasing, having a good time doing that, but no yellowtail to
12:49come home for dinner.
12:50So we run farther west.
12:52I'm trying to get to an area that has good current and some bigger yellowtails.
12:58Got to a zone that was always, you know, productive for me before.
13:02Threw the hook around 68, 70 feet of water.
13:05We had a raging current.
13:06We're going to have to do some weighted baits, some knocker rigs, to send those baits down
13:11near the bottom and let them float through that way.
13:14And some heavier jig heads, and to no avail, not even a first yellowtail, that bottom rod
13:20took a slight dip.
13:21As she brings the rod up, and there's the leader, 30 feet of it, I look, and there's
13:27a nice zero mackerel.
13:28Check it out.
13:29I'll get the gaff.
13:30Just have fun with them.
13:30I'll get a gaff.
13:31Okay.
13:31Hey, there's your fish for tonight.
13:33Yeah.
13:35All right.
13:36You're good.
13:37Just lined.
13:38And then where he's at.
13:40Right here.
13:40And then you may want to walk back and give me the leader.
13:48There we go.
13:49I got him for you.
13:50Not the best scab shot, but you got him.
13:52And I know, I guess, I know what you're going to be cooking on.
13:57Awesome.
13:57Nice zero mackerel.
13:58Yeah.
13:59This is the most incredible fish when you get it right back and you fillet it, spin it
14:08with some wasabi and soy sauce.
14:10Oh, perfect.
14:10It's one of the most remarkable fish.
14:12Oh, you've eaten like sushi?
14:13Oh, my God.
14:13It's one of the best.
14:14Oh, awesome.
14:15Cool.
14:16But unfortunately, that was the end of that.
14:18No more zeros, no more bottom stuff.
14:20So I said, you know what?
14:21Let's pick up and start working our way back to the east.
14:24I see, you know, a can in a distance, navigation laid there.
14:30So I said, you know what, Sloan?
14:31We have that Magnum Explode Rappala.
14:34I said, I'm going to get you close to that can.
14:38You make a cast and see what's in there.
14:40And as he starts chugging it, I see the super fast weight come up behind it and boom, the
14:45massive explosion.
14:47First cast on the popper.
14:48Boom.
14:49Woo.
14:50Well, you came for a good fight, Sloan.
14:52Yeah.
14:52He's not happy.
14:55The best thing, let him run tired.
14:57You're in the best spot.
14:59You're on the rod.
14:59You don't have to deal with the fish when it comes alongside the boat like I do.
15:02I got to tire him out before he tires me out.
15:04Okay.
15:05Up in Jersey, pound for pound, you know that barracuda fight's been in a stride bass.
15:10Am I right or wrong?
15:11Don't worry, don't let you back into the state.
15:14No, I mean, it's similar a little bit.
15:18Welcome to this edition of how to make friends and influence people.
15:22Another circle.
15:23Just keep them circling there.
15:27Oh, my gosh.
15:29All right.
15:30Sloan.
15:32Things like a dinosaur.
15:33All right.
15:36Absolute blast.
15:37I didn't even know what it was at first.
15:39It was a crazy, crazy fight.
15:41Ended up being a barracuda.
15:42And, I mean, this thing was massive.
15:46The fight was an absolute blast.
15:48And you can't beat anything on top water.

16:44After Sloan's barracuda catch, we headed back to the barn.
16:50Here, Sloan and I star-brided the Mark VI, clean fish, and enjoyed a Papa's Pilar rum drink.
16:57Later that evening, Sloan would prepare a special dinner with assistance from crew members
17:02Charles Gonzalez and Rob the Sweet Green.
17:05So, with the mahi, my plan was to do some blackened fish tacos, have all the fixings out.
17:17With the triple tail, I was thinking ceviche.
17:20And we had ourselves an absolutely amazing meal.
17:23I think I impressed George.
17:25So, after we finished up dinner, it was starting to get dark out.
17:28And I saw that George had his lights on the boat, too.
17:32And also in the backyard, there's a green light in the water.
17:35And the wheels start turning in my head.
17:37I knew there had to be something in those lights.
17:38So, I took a walk down there.
17:40And, I mean, I saw just a huge school of mangrove snappers just cruising right in the lights.
17:46And that's when I decided to break out one of George's light pen rods.
17:50We still had some ballyhoo left over.
17:53So, chopped that into little pieces, put that right in a hook, and tried to fool some of these mangroves.
17:58We got one on here.
18:02There he is.
18:08Woo!
18:11There we go.
18:19Sure enough, I mean, I caught a decent amount.
18:21One of them was pretty good size.
18:23I mean, it was a keeper size.
18:25We let him go.
18:26I mean, we didn't need any more fish at that point.
18:28But it was super cool.
18:29I mean, catching mangrove snapper right in the backyard.
18:32I mean, and essentially, that could be your dinner.
18:34Again, right steps outside of your house, right in the backyard.
18:37It was amazing.
18:38I'd be out there every single night if I lived down here.
18:41For certain, we would not have been proper hosts if we didn't treat Sloan to lunch in Key West
18:50and, of course, some quality time at the Papa's Plower Rum Distillery and their new Hemingway Social Club
18:56before dropping her off at the airport.
18:58In the main lobby, Sloan was fascinated by all the Papa's Plower merchandise.
19:09She also sampled selected blends of Papa's Plower.
19:12We then progressed into the Hemingway Social Club, where Sloan took in its unique Hemingway-esque setting
19:29and even toasted its legendary namesake.
19:32I did the Florida Keys justice by bringing her back after that rain out when she experienced with her dad back in Isla Morata,
19:41showing her what the Florida Keys really has to offer in terms of beautiful weather, hungry fish,
19:46and all the good things that come with the fabulous Florida Keys.
19:49I mean, I am so thankful and appreciative for George and his crew.
19:53I mean, these guys are easily the nicest, most down-to-earth people you will ever meet.
19:58They really showed me an absolute fantastic time at the Keys.
20:02Aside from fishing, just all bonding together and sharing our stories about fishing and our, you know, traveling and experiences,
20:09I had an absolute blast hanging out with these guys all weekend.
