00:00On this week's World of Saltwater Fishing, we're going night fishing in Miami's Biscayne Bay for two headliners, Tarpon and Snook. Stay tuned.
00:21George Bovarumo's World of Saltwater Fishing. Big fish don't stand a chance.
00:30I get asked a lot, what is my favorite place to fish? If I had one destination to fish anywhere in the world, what would that be?
00:52The home water is where I grew up, Biscayne Bay. And I grew up cutting my teeth with sea trout, North Biscayne Bay and doing the offshore stuff.
01:03So that leads us to this episode and another big standout of fishing in Miami of all the various options that you have is night fishing for Tarpon and Snook.
01:15And both haul over and government cut offers excellent fishing based on times of the year for your snook and as well as Tarpon.
01:23You look at some of the young guys that are coming out that are starting to do their stuff and trying to cut their teeth in the guiding business.
01:30And one such person, his name is Jose Rodriguez.
01:34And it's just a whole nother world. I know offshore is amazing, but Biscayne Bay really hits my heart, man, because you're out there mainly at night.
01:41I do a lot of day trips, but I love the nighttime because you see the lights of the city, you see the shadow lines and the Tarpons coming out.
01:47It's just another world, man. It's just another world for real.
01:50He's a master of fishing the southern reaches of Biscayne Bay, government cut in particular.
01:56We decided let's go out and do a nighttime show in Biscayne Bay for snook and Tarpon.
02:00So, of course, we met up in North Dade, Biscayne Bay, TNT Marine, jumped aboard my Mako 214.
02:14And the first part of the trip was cruising down the intercoastal waterway to load up a live pinfish.
02:20This is going to be a live baiting mission.
02:22So we worked our way down to some of the grass flats.
02:26We threw an anchor, threw a block of chum over, got some tiny hair hooks, cut up pieces of shrimp, and we filled the live wall up.
02:33And this is all tide-related fishing.
02:36I had a timing perfect on the outgoing tide towards the end because I like to fish that a little bit more.
02:42I think I get a little bit more action around that time.
02:44Even though I do catch them on all the tides, I like to specifically focus on that one because that time of the year, I've been having great luck in that area.
02:52So I was just timing it perfect so we could have the better chance.
02:55We start heading out the government cutaway.
02:58When you're fishing out-going tide, you have to hope you don't have a real stiff east wind or a southeast wind or anything that's going to push against the water moving out and create some tumultuous conditions.
03:09And we were right there with about a good 15-knot southeast wind.
03:14So I said, I'll stay at the wheel, you do the casting where you want, and I will hold you in position based on tide wind.
03:19So you have a concentration of smoke in these inlets, and sometimes it's just a matter of trying to find out where the big concentrations or concentration is based on the tide.
03:30And typically, they're around that part of the jetty in that tide, but for whatever reason, they weren't there.
03:37We decided, let's go ahead and try on the inside jetty of the south side.
03:42So we get in there, and he's doing his thing, and all of a sudden, he hooks up.
03:47Oh, tarpon.
03:49Nice.
03:50I'll get you out.
03:53Beautiful.
03:54I'll get you out of here.
03:55Yes, sir.
03:55Look at this right here.
03:56Right, beautiful.
03:57He's going to launch, too.
03:59He's going to do a jump.
04:04Woo!
04:04Got to love it.
04:08Love it.
04:09That's how you turn a little fish to a big fish.
04:14All right, let me know when you want me to come in.
04:15He's ready, and we're safe out here.
04:18All right.
04:20Careful with that.
04:22Let him go.
04:23Keeping it with the sharks around here.
04:25I already saw a couple of them coming in here.
04:27I know.
04:27Let's see.
04:33Beautiful.
04:33Fun size.
04:39There he is right here.
04:40Check that out.
04:42Circle hook.
04:43That's a fabulous hooking job.
04:45Oh, yeah.
04:45I mean, I'm going to unhook him for you?
04:47Yeah, go ahead.
04:48I've got him here, and I'm going to release him real quick.
04:50Okay.
04:51Beautiful.
04:52Hey!
04:53Get out of here.
04:54Nice tail slap.
04:55Woo!
04:56Good job, George.
04:57You let that one go, we're on the board, we're feeling really good.
05:00George Fovaromo's World of Saltwater Fishing is proudly brought to you by Penn.
05:05Let the battle begin.
05:07Mako.
05:07You'll find them where the fish are.
05:09Bass Pro Shops and Cabela's.
05:11Your adventure starts here.
05:13Mercury.
05:14George, we'll be right back.
05:17With the magnificent Miami skyline reflecting off Biscayne Bay, one of my favorite bodies
05:22of water, Captain Jose Rodriguez and I eagerly set forth to target our next species.
05:28So he wants to come back out and play with these snook.
05:32He said, let's go around the north jetty and cut in on the north side and start work on our
05:38way towards, you know, just outside of the swimming zone and work the opposite side of
05:42the rocks and trying to find that school of fish there.
05:46So we got ourselves in position and we were doing exactly that.
05:51And it's just a matter of just working tight to the, near the rocks and just trying to find
05:55out where those concentrations of fish would be.
05:57And boom, it happens.
06:00Rod goes down.
06:02You know, you're going to probably launch out there.
06:03Yeah.
06:04Good job, George.
06:05Get the maneuver closer.
06:06Get on that leader.
06:08There he comes.
06:09Get closer, closer.
06:15Hanging it right a little bit.
06:16Here he comes.
06:17Yes, sir.
06:20Watch that prop now.
06:23I'm looking for it.
06:24All right.
06:25Get this right out of your way.
06:26Right here.
06:28And he's on.
06:30I got a snook.
06:31It's a snook?
06:32Yeah.
06:32Get the net up front.
06:33Hold up.
06:33I'm coming.
06:34I'm coming.
06:34Net up front.
06:37I'm coming on this side.
06:38Little pleasure.
06:39Here, get it this side.
06:40Hang on.
06:41Hang on.
06:41I'll get him up there.
06:42Take your time.
06:45Nice.
06:46Hang on, buddy.
06:47He's not done yet.
06:48No problem.
06:51In the boat, baby.
06:53All right.
06:53Get me off the rock.
06:55Yeah.
06:55Let me make sure everything's good.
06:57And we're out of here.
06:58We are.
06:59Absolute chaos here.
07:01That's how we do it.
07:01All South Beach.
07:03Oh, my.
07:04What a fish, bro.
07:05That's a monster.
07:06And we have our beauty of a snook in the boat.
07:08And here we go.
07:09Beautiful, breeding-class snook.
07:11We admired it.
07:17Let that go.
07:18We're in great shape.
07:20So it varies.
07:20I really do like the nighttime a lot more because these fish are a little bit more nocturnal,
07:25and they also concentrate a little bit better.
07:27It's always fun fishing wherever you find these fish.
07:30But there's something special about fishing the intercoastal waterway or the bay bridges
07:35that they're pretty special in that you find some of these lighted docks.
07:40And you look in there, and you could see if there's any snook or tarpon around them.
07:46And I had a rod all set to go.
07:47It was a 20-pound test braid, little pen spinner.
07:50We had a 30-pound fluorocarbon leader.
07:52And I had a Rapala twitching mullet.
07:55Looked like a pilchard-type pattern tied to that.
07:58Just in case we're coming across some of these lights, we see snook,
08:01I could pitch one of these smaller lures at the snook
08:03and hopefully convert that into a release.
08:07And we went to one spot, and we looked.
08:09There were about two or three snook in there.
08:10I said, this is just perfect.
08:12We made a cast in there, started twitching that lure out,
08:16and bam, that I get creamed.
08:18I'm on to a snook now.
08:19Light tackle artificial lure at night in this game day.
08:23Oh, there we go.
08:25I'm on.
08:27See what we have.
08:29Nice.
08:32Nice snook.
08:33There you go.
08:35Nice fish.
08:36Oh, he saw the net and took off.
08:46Hang on.
08:47Careful.
08:47You got him.
08:48You got him.
08:48You got him.
08:53Yes, sir.
08:53Beautiful.
08:54Nice fish.
08:57It's a dangerous spot.
09:00It is.
09:01Let's unhook him.
09:02Yeah.
09:03Let me get this out.
09:03There you go.
09:04Nice fish.
09:04Nice fish.
09:04Nice fish.
09:04Nice fish.
09:04Nice fish.
09:04Nice fish.
09:04Nice fish.
09:05Nice fish.
09:05Nice fish.
09:06Twitch and mullet.
09:07Twitch and mullet, baby.
09:08There it is.
09:09The twitch and mullet did the job.
09:14All right.
09:15Beautiful casting under the dock light snook with a grapple of twitch and mullet.
09:20That's the trick.
09:21Come on.
09:22Grow bigger, buddy.
09:25In your own.
09:26Get out.
09:28Nice job, George.
09:29The dock lights, man.
09:30Happening.
09:31Good job, man.
09:32That was awesome.
09:32Let's get another one.
09:33You think there's another one in there?
09:33Yes, sir.
09:34All right.
09:34Let's go.
09:34Biscayne Bay snook can be caught year-round during both day and night, yet the best chance
09:39of catching a trophy-class snook is during the summer, when large concentrations of adult
09:44fish gather in and around inlets to spawn.
09:47Best bet.
09:48Soak a hardy live bait along the bottom by jetty points during the last stages of an outgoing
09:53tide and initial stages of the incoming.
09:56Trolling swimming plugs also scores.
09:59During winter, Miami's Biscayne Bay harbors large populations of migrating tarpon, seeking
10:05its warmer waters and shrimp runs.
10:07During summer, resident tarpon provide evening thrills along lighted bridges, where they ambush
10:12forage from dark sides of shadow lines created by the lights.
10:15Best bet, cast a live crab, pinfish, mullet, or pilchard underneath a bridge span and let
10:21it drift back naturally with the tide across these shadow lines.
10:25And artbypasta.com from catch-to-canvas rendering.
10:29Catch-to-canvas, baby.
10:31George Foveromo's World of Saltwater Fishing is proudly brought to you by Simrad.
10:37Rapala holds the world record for world records.
10:42Suffix, always use the best line.
10:44Starbright Boat Care Products, blending technology with performance since 1973.
10:50George, we'll be right back.
10:51The evening is young, and the bite is heating up.
10:56Captain Jose Rodriguez and I are timing the tides in Miami's Biscayne Bay.
11:01You get a snook or tarpon, any fish, I don't care what you catch them on, be it live bait
11:05or whatever, it's always exciting.
11:07But you get that little bit more satisfaction when you can convert one over and get them
11:11on an artificial lure.
11:13And they wise up fast.
11:15Once we release that snook, went back in there, there was a couple more, and that was it.
11:19They wouldn't even look at that lure.
11:21I think we even pitched some light pin fishing there.
11:23They wouldn't even look at that.
11:24That was shut down.
11:25Time to move on to the next spot.
11:27So what we were doing, we came to maybe mid bay, around the Julia Turtle Causeway.
11:32And what we were doing was working the spans from the beginning all the way towards the
11:35middle of the bridge.
11:36And working them real easy, nice and easy with the crab and the pinfish.
11:40And man, that one went off in the rod holder.
11:42It was amazing.
11:44You doing all right?
11:45Yes, sir.
11:48Oh, wow.
11:49Beautiful fish.
11:55Yes.
11:56All right.
11:56You got him on a leader.
11:58Right here.
11:59I may have to back up some for you.
12:00Yeah, yeah.
12:00He's good.
12:01He's going to stop right here.
12:02Here he's going to go up.
12:04Here he comes.
12:04Oh, right there.
12:05He's coming.
12:05Oh.
12:06You okay?
12:07Yes, sir.
12:09Looking beautiful.
12:19There he is.
12:22He's got him.
12:22There's our release.
12:25Oh, oh, oh.
12:26Whoa.
12:27I'm going to back it up.
12:27Put it way deep.
12:28Way deep.
12:29Hold on.
12:29Hold on.
12:29Yeah, yeah.
12:30There he goes.
12:30He's coming back around.
12:31He's coming back around.
12:32Get ready, guys.
12:37Watch your prop.
12:38Yes, sir.
12:40I'm about to chase him back a little way from the bridge.
12:42No problem.
12:43Where are we at?
12:44Okay, yeah.
12:44We're good, though.
12:44We're good.
12:46There he is.
12:48He's going to try another weird move here.
12:51I got him.
12:56That's one of his last runs.
13:00There he is.
13:01Oh, yeah, beautiful one.
13:10Check that out, huh?
13:11Beautiful.
13:16I'm going to kick us forward a little bit.
13:17I got him here.
13:18We got him.
13:25Careful with that line right there.
13:26Yeah.
13:27Nice.
13:29And we fight this through the night, bring the fish alongside the boat.
13:32I go down, lift the fish, get that hook out as quickly as we can.
13:36I don't want to keep my hands there too long at night with the sharks out there.
13:39And boom, one tarp and release.
13:41So we're doing well now.
13:43We're still going after more fish.
13:45This night was far from being over.
13:47We had a great tarp on with that one.

15:06Some people are not really understanding how beautiful Miami is at the nighttime compared to other cities.
15:16You got this whole skyline, and it's just ridiculous on what you see out here, man.
15:20We move, check out some different lights, no smoke under them, and he decided, all right, let's get set up at this other bridge that I really did well the night before.
15:30So we get ourselves all set up in there, and we actually had, boom, both rods go down.
15:37That one was just drifting by.
15:38I was working a crab on the right side, and, yep, the rod went off.
15:42Sure enough, went off, started jumping, and we went nuts.
15:45I picked this one up.
15:46This one got off.
15:47Okay.
15:47Are you doing all right what I'm doing for you here?
15:49Yes, sir.
15:50All right.
15:50Let me know when you're weighing up.
15:51I don't want to hit this pile.
15:52No problem.
15:52He's coming with us, so we're perfect.
15:54We're pulling him straight forward.
15:55Feels like a tarpon.
15:56He's coming this way.
15:57All right.
15:58Oh, yeah, it is a tarpon.
15:58There he goes.
16:00Well, he's right here.
16:02He's come up.
16:02He's going to launch you now.
16:04Yeah.
16:05Yeah.
16:08You're doing all right with him?
16:09Yeah.
16:10He's coming this way.
16:11All right.
16:11You're good.
16:12You're good.
16:12You're good.
16:14There he goes.
16:15Yeah.
16:18Beautiful, George.
16:20Nice one.
16:22He's a spicy one.
16:23Not done yet.
16:28All right.
16:36You got him.
16:37There we go.
16:40Okay.
16:41Here he is.
16:42All right.
16:43Circle hook.
16:44Nice.
16:45Want me to get it out of there?
16:46Yeah.
16:46Go ahead and we'll let this fish get on its way.
16:51What a fish.
16:52There you go.
16:53He's biting down on me.
16:54Give him a little pump of the tail.
16:57There you go.
16:58Out of here.
17:00Man, you got that one.
17:01Good.
17:01A double hitter going on.
17:02Oh, yeah.
17:04Man.
17:04One got off, but we were drifting that crab back and boom.
17:07Got hit.
17:08Tight as can be.
17:09And that current is raging here.
17:11We were fighting, trying to get you out of that span.
17:13Any worry about the pilots ahead of you?
17:15Oh, yeah.
17:16We're worried about a lot of different things here.
17:17We got boats coming by.
17:19We got the current flying.
17:20Yep.
17:21We made it happen, man.
17:22Miami, I think sometimes they call us full contact fishing down here.
17:25Exactly.
17:26This is a little different.
17:27It's late at night.
17:27This whole place is still.
17:28Look at this.
17:29We got the city lights all around us.
17:31Such a beautiful view.
17:32We can't beat this, man.
17:33Man.
17:35So we decided, well, hey, we're down here in the south.
17:39We still need to get the boat back up the TNT Marine.
17:42So let's make a nice cruise back up north.
17:45And that's what we did.
17:46Pulled in the TNT Marine, docked the boat, and we called it a night.
17:50Now, as often happens, a lot of our TV shoots, when we travel, we always leave a buffer day
17:57or two there to compensate in case we have a weather issue.
18:01So I decided, let's use this next day.
18:03I'm going to take Jose.
18:05I'm going to treat him to Garcia's on the water.
18:08Jump aboard to 214 North Miami.
18:10We'll make a nice, easy cruise down the intercoastal waterway.
18:13Start heading up the Miami River.
18:16Get under the I-95 bridge.
18:19And we see Garcia's up there on the right.
18:21We docked the 214.
18:22And from there, we had one incredibly magnificent dinner.
18:34Garcia's was amazing.
18:35I've been going there since a little kid.
18:37It's a Miami staple.
18:38It really is.
18:39It's been there for many, many, many years.
18:41And it was amazing.
18:42We went in there.
18:43Everybody treated us great.
18:44We had an amazing lunch.
18:46And I think every single thing there tasted great.
18:48I don't even have nothing to say about that.
18:50Ha ha ha.
18:51So you talk about Miami, and you want to talk about a landmark place.
19:03You look at Garcia's.
19:03It's been here forever.
19:05Owe yourself an amazing, fresh seafood dinner.
19:09Give him a try.
19:10I had an extremely enjoyable time getting together with Jose Rodriguez,
19:15one of the upstart guides.
19:16He just got his captain license.
19:18He has a boat ready to go.
19:19He also will fish aboard your boat.
19:22He's one of the young guns, making a big name for himself,
19:26catching snook and tarpon in Miami's Biscayne Bay.
19:29And to spend time with him in a waterway.
19:32Again, I grew up in North Biscayne Bay.
19:34And going into his part of the world, down in the southern reaches there,
19:37of government cutting all, was amazing.
19:39I really had a great time.
19:40Didn't know what to expect.
19:42It was amazing.
19:43This guy could fish.
19:44And we were out there just having a real blast just as friends, man.
19:47It was really good.
19:48We ran pretty far, so we had a lot of time to talk.
19:51And, man, we cracked some jokes.
19:53We had a good time.
19:54And we were out there catching fish, doing what we love.
19:56So fishing in Biscayne Bay at night, so beautiful, man.
19:59We have a different type of variety of fish.

20:08And it's like no other, man.
20:10Really, it's a surprise bag.
20:13Anywhere from 50 feet in the port to 3 feet on the flats.
