00:00On this week's World of Saltwater Fishing, get ready to do some hand-crank deep-dropping for Broadbill Swordfish off Destin, Florida.
00:07I'll be with Adam Peoples and just wait to see the numbers of swordfish we encounter.
00:12Music
00:26George Poverumo's World of Saltwater Fishing. Big fish don't stand a chance.
00:30Destin, Florida. In the Florida Panhandle, some of the most exceptional offshore fishing exists here.
00:45And daytime swordfish was really exploding here. And Adam Peoples has it all figured out and dialed in.
00:53I've been chartering for 12 years. So I started out doing a lot of the nearshore stuff, king mackerel and red snapper and stuff like that.
01:02And I've kind of developed into the offshore scene. I started offering daytime swordfishing trips back in 2014.
01:10And I've been doing it every year since. And it's by far my favorite thing to do.
01:13And where I first met Adam was at our Saltwater Sportsman National Seminar Series that we had held last year at Destin.
01:21And he's a local hotshot that has these fish figured out. He was one of our faculty members that day.
01:27We started talking. And next thing you know, we decided, let's get together and shoot a World of Saltwater Fishing episode at a Destin for Broadbill Swordfish.
01:35But first, we had to get here with the Mark VI.
01:38Trailing a boat is something that you need to be 100% focused on.
01:52And a successful trailering expedition starts well in advance by making sure the trailer is completely gone through as far as your tires, air pressures are right, the bearings are all greased, your brakes are working.
02:04And ours was in perfect shape for the trip.
02:08And from there, it was just a matter of just staying focused and make sure the boat was secured on the trailer well.
02:13And you just drove cautiously. And you would eventually get there.
02:17A couple fuel stops. A couple stops at the rest area.
02:20And speaking of fuel stops, I'm a big proponent of adding StarTron Enzyme Fuel Treatment to my diesel truck, especially for long-distance hauls.
02:29StarTron improves the combustibility of all fuels, even ethanol blends.
02:33It keeps the entire fuel system clean, from tank to injectors.
02:37This ensures a smooth and fuel-efficient ride.
02:39And I rely on StarTron to keep my boat's fuel in check, especially where non-ethanol recreational fuel is not available.
02:47StarTron removes and prevents gum, varnish, and carbon deposits.
02:51It certainly gives me peace of mind when we're running far offshore or deep into the Bahamas.
02:55The last thing we need to worry about then is suspect fuel quality.
02:59Finally, we made it to Destin.
03:01And it just goes to prove that preparation to make sure that your trailer is 100% dialed in, bearings check, everything's 100% on the float-on trailer, and some good sensible driving practices.
03:14A little luck, you'll get there, and we are here.
03:17We met up with Adam early in the morning, and we just untied from harbor docks and started to make that long trek out until we got to the actual pass itself.
03:36And I've got to tell you, the sunrise was totally remarkable.
03:41They were calling for winds maybe around 10, occasionally 15 miles an hour out of the east, not really a bad forecast at all.
03:49Once we got beyond that pass, it was time to get the Mark 6 up and running and heading out to a spot that was near a bottom structure called the Spur.
03:59So we were headed out to a general area called the Spur, which is about 60 nautical miles out of Destin, just fishing a really nice ledge out there.
04:07It's just an area that the current pushes up into, and there's typically a lot of bait.
04:11And when the bait gets stacked in there, the swordfish, they follow and feed on all that bait.
04:17And when Adam told me that they're fishing roughly around two pounds of lead, I'm looking at him and said, are you kidding?
04:23When you hook up to a fish and you finally get tight to that fish, the hooker drive pops off that international.
04:29Then you lift that rod, you get into your rod belt and your harness, you hook up, and at that point, you're hand cranking the fish.
04:37Good old-fashioned sporting style.
04:40Got to our first spot.
04:42Adam set the baits out, and he had just no sooner hit the bottom.
04:48And he engaged it, and I hear him, I got whacked, I got whacked.
04:52The first bite we had was the one that we just, it was like we had it on just briefly, and we were figuring out the electric reel.
04:58We had it detached, and it was there and gone within a matter of probably 30 seconds.
05:03You do pull a lot of hooks with swordfish, and you could go through all this struggle and harness and fighting this fish.
05:10And to see a swordfish come near the boat, only to throw hook, it's heartbreaking.
05:16But unfortunately, after Adam pulled the hook on his fish, the very next drop, bam, it was my turn to get going, and we hooked up.
05:28Pulled, son of a gun.
05:30Let's see what happened here, guys.
05:31Pull the hook.
05:32Oh, my God, so close, so close.
05:35I saw him down there.
05:36Pull the hook.
05:37That's the way it goes.
05:38So we were not starting off that well at all.
05:40We were now, shoot, zero for two.
05:43Not a good way to start the day.
05:45But Adam's confidence level was right up there.
05:48We knew we had a good day.
05:50The salooner periods were dead on, and Adam said that these fish are going to be chewing all day.
05:56And hey, he's a local guy here, so who am I to argue with him?
06:00George Poveromo's World of Saltwater Fishing is proudly brought to you by Penn.
06:04Let the battle begin.
06:06Mako.
06:07You'll find them where the fish are.
06:09Bass Pro Shops and Cabela's.
06:11Your adventure starts here.
06:12Mercury Marine.
06:13Go boldly.
06:15George, we'll be right back.
06:17After pulling hooks on two swordfish, we forge ahead in our search of our treasure and send yet another bait down.
06:24Adam Peoples and I are day dropping for swordfish some 70 miles off Destin in the Florida panhandle.
06:29You had two hits.
06:31One, you pull the hook, and then I had mine near the boat, and then the fish threw the hook.
06:37And we're sending the same bait down.
06:38Pretty much no harm, no foul, no wear.
06:42And that bait was down, I don't know, four, five, six, seven minutes or so, and it was Adam's turnip bat again, and then there you go.
06:51You see that rod tip dance, and he was solidly on, and once that fish was 100% tight, he popped the drive off.
07:00We got him in the harness.
07:01Let me know when she's coming up, and I'll start.
07:04We got a while.
07:05She's stalling it out.
07:07Oh, the hookup.
07:08The catch ratios are so frustrating with this fishery.
07:11Very tough.
07:14I'm good to go.
07:16I'm in my happy place.
07:18I said I'm in my happy place.
07:19Yeah, now you're home.
07:20Glad to have you back.
07:24Was he pulling on you a little while ago?
07:27Oh, yeah, yeah.
07:27He was stalling it out the whole way up.
07:29Yeah, he's trying to look like angle up, come on.
07:30I wouldn't pull away from it anymore.
07:31No, I'm neutral.
07:32I'm just a new for right now.
07:34There he's jumping on top out there.
07:41Trying to keep up with it.
07:44There you go, buddy.
07:50Keep you out of the motors.
07:52Here he comes.
07:55Yeah, we'll let him go, George.
07:56Let's release that one.
07:58Let's let him go.
07:59No problem.
08:00We decided we're going to bring this fish alongside the boat.
08:03We're going to release it.
08:05All right, hook's out.
08:06Here's your hook.
08:06All right, I got it.
08:07You're free.
08:08Here's your sword.
08:09And that's going to do two things for us.
08:13Number one is it's going to get the skunk out of our boat, okay?
08:17And number two, good karma.
08:19Go ahead and release one.
08:24And it swims off.
08:26We got that dreaded skunk out of the boat.
08:28Let's go drop again because I think our luck's about to change.
08:39All right, I'm finally beat.
08:43So shot number four, I was up at bat and there was the tap.
08:47I teased the fish, got a good hookup on it, and now I'm on.
08:52I'm neutral.
08:52Let me know if you need more.
08:54Let's go.
08:54Let's go.
08:55Let's go.
08:56Let's go.
08:57Let's go.
08:58Let's go.
08:59Let's go.
09:00All right, stop it.
09:01Now keep going.
09:02It's nice and steady.
09:03Good job.
09:05All right, fish coming up.
09:08There he's going to jump.
09:09He's going to jump.
09:10Let's see what he does.
09:11There he is.
09:12All right, another release.
09:14I mean, we can catch him here real quick on that.
09:26It's whatever I can do.
09:27All right, we'll catch him.
09:28Catch him.
09:29Ain't he pretty?
09:37I'm just going to keep us going in gear.
09:39You get this thing off out of here or what?
09:41No, no.
09:42All right.
09:43It's all you.
09:45Can you back off my drag a little?
09:47Help you?
09:57He's pissed.
10:06All right.
10:07He was about to cut my hand.
10:08You all right?
10:09No, I'm good.
10:10I just let him go.
10:11I've learned the lesson the hard way when they start doing that.
10:12We have two releases versus the two strikes that we had early on.
10:17So now it's about an even batting deal.
10:20And, you know, like I said, you know, we towed a long way and everybody here loves fresh swordfish.
10:27We need to put a big one in the boat.
10:28We need to put a big one in the boat.
10:29We need to put a big one in the boat.
10:30George Poveromo's world of saltwater fishing is proudly brought to you by

10:45Starbright.
10:46Clean and protect.
10:48With Starbright.
10:49George.
10:52After releasing two small swords, we're hoping karma will reward us with a sizable foe.
10:57Adam Peoples and I have the Mark 6 some 70 miles off Destin in the Florida Panhandle day dropping for swordfish.
11:03But first, let me tell you all about the Island Resort at Fort Walton Beach.
11:07The property has an amazing view of the turquoise Gulf of Mexico waters and some 600 feet of sugar white sand beach to enjoy it from.
11:15For the non-beachgoers, there's a heated outdoor pool and our iconic grotto pool, which features the only swim-up bar on the Emerald Coast.
11:23Accommodations include the choice of a standard room or one with a view of the Gulf Dunes, open Gulf of Mexico or pool deck.
11:31Food and beverage options range from breakfasts, burgers and pizza by the pool at Island Grill, tropical and island-inspired dishes at the coastal kitchen, an island food truck, and poolside bars.
11:42The famed Okaloosa Island Pier, which spans 1,262 feet into the Gulf of Mexico, is a short walk from the Island Resort as are other restaurants, bars, and entertainment.
11:53This represents a perfect sampling of what one can expect by visiting a destined Fort Walton Beach area.
11:59Now, let's get back to the fishing.
12:02Now, I've got to tell you, Adam called this one right.
12:05He said these fish are going to be chewing all day long, so we make yet another drift.
12:10Now, we're getting a strike in every drift, and these drifts weren't all that long either.
12:14And he was up to bat next, and sure enough, he's hooked up, goes through the routine, gets him in the harness, and now he's on to a much better sized fish.
12:25Got a little heavier now.
12:26Yeah, he did.
12:27Okay, I'm going in neutral again.
12:28I'm just going to try to keep you out of motors here.
12:32Oh, I can see this fish under my trail.
12:38I think he changed direction.
12:39Oh, yeah.
12:40Oh, yeah, that's a decent fish.
12:41Okay.
12:42Come around.
12:43Coming back under the boat.
12:44He's right here.
12:45He's right here.
12:46He's right here.
12:47Nice.
12:48All right.
12:49All right.
12:50All right.
12:51Drags back.
12:52Back up.
12:53Back up.
12:54Back up.
12:55Back up.
12:56All right.
12:57Got it up.
12:58Now we got him.
12:59You let me know when you want to try him.
13:00I'm ready.
13:01You ready?
13:02All right.
13:03Guys, you're going to come on with one, two, and three.
13:05One, two.
13:06One, two.
13:07One, two.
13:08One, two.
13:09One, two.
13:10One, two.
13:11One, two.
13:12One, two.
13:13One, two.
13:14One, two.
13:15One, two.
13:16One, two.
13:17One, two.
13:18And one.
13:20Okay.
13:21Nice one.
13:22All right.
13:23We're not going home to South Florida without swordfish for sure.
13:28Thanks, Adam.
13:29Team effort.
13:30You don't come out here and do this by yourself.
13:32It takes a team.
13:33The Broadbills swordfish represents the ultimate big game fish worldwide.
13:38This powerful, highly migratory predator abounds in and around prominent offshore canyons
13:44and fishers at depths ranging from 1,000 to 2,000 feet, hence their large eyes for precise,
13:51low light vision.
13:53Originally a nighttime pursuit when swordfish near the surface, date tactics have changed
13:57the game.

15:00Our luck was really turning around and it was a fast day of fishing.
15:04You got to understand, you're not out there throwing up dolphin.
15:07You're dropping down for a majestic animal like the broad bill swordfish, 1400 feet of water.
15:13And you're getting shots at these fish with every single drop.
15:17I mean, this is A-plus quality fishing that would be hard to match anywhere.
15:22We were on a hot day and a day, I don't even know if the day was half over with.
15:27But next thing you know, we're back on that drift, back on the numbers.
15:30Another bait goes down.
15:31And then yours truly hooks up.
15:33And here I find myself in a harness with another broad bill swordfish.
15:37Hooked up, sort of starting to swim that bait up.
15:40I'm going to come tight to the fish, jump out of it, get in a harness and go for it.
15:45And crank.
15:46All right.
15:47Coming down.
15:48All right.
15:49Keep you company here.
15:50Here he comes.
15:51He looks like he's in my...
15:53Wow.
15:54That is a nice one.
15:56Here he comes.
15:58Watch yourself.
15:59Watch yourself.
16:00Coming up.
16:01Got him.
16:02Did you get him?
16:03Yep.
16:04Do I back off or hold him?
16:05Let's hold him.
16:06Get out that line.
16:07It's going to come out of the basket, guys.
16:08Watch yourself.
16:09Watch yourself.
16:10Stop whining?
16:11Got him stop whining.
16:12Come here, girl.
16:13He's dying right now.
16:14You got him?
16:15Yep.
16:16Sang tight.
16:17I got him.
16:18I got him.
16:19I got him.
16:20Ready?
16:21Two.
16:22Three.
16:23All right.
16:24There we go.
16:25A lot of times, the one's going to come out of the basket, guys.
16:26I'm going to come out of the basket, guys.
16:27Watch yourself.
16:28Watch yourself.
16:29Watch yourself.
16:30Watch yourself.
16:31Stop whining.
16:32I'm stopped whining.
16:33Come here, girl.
16:34He's dying right now.
16:35You got him?
16:36Yep.
16:37He's hanging tight.
16:38I got him.
16:39I got him.
16:40I got him.
16:41Ready?
16:42Two.
16:43Three.
16:44All right.
16:45There we go.
16:46A lot of times, the way these swordfish will race up to the surface, even on big fish,
16:50you might be able to get a dart in them very quickly in the fight.
16:54And it increases your chances of catching them and decreases your catch time, because
16:58now you're attached to them with two lines.
17:00Pretty amazing.
17:01The bite, it's just sensational.
17:04The next drop, we immediately hook another fish.
17:06This fish is definitely feeling heavy.
17:09Adam was up to bat again, and sure enough, he hit another home run.
17:13Well, we just made a little directional change in our drift there.
17:16And right when we were making the change in the drift, the fish didn't whack it or anything.
17:20He just ate it and loaded the rod up.
17:22So it's acting like it's a really nice fish.
17:32That's ready to go?
17:33Yes, sir.
17:34All right.
17:35Incredible swordfish bite out of Destin, Florida.
17:38Totally incredible.
17:39You don't even have time to make yourself a sandwich.
17:41I got some drag on him too.
17:48You good here?
17:53He's right under the ice.
17:54Yeah, you good here?
17:55All right, neutral.
17:56Got him.
17:57I know when you get stuck.
18:11Hurry up.
18:12All right, good.
18:13All right.
18:14Stand back.
18:15Stand back.
18:16Stand back.
18:17I knew he was going to do this.
18:19At that point, it becomes a ball of confusion.
18:24You're interested in two things, making sure that you're not going to lose this fish, but
18:29making sure that nobody gets hurt as well.
18:31So you're just in that moment.
18:33You're focused on that task at hand.
18:36At this point in the game, we're five out of seven on swordfish.
18:49We released two fish.
18:51We have three that were taken in.
18:53You know, we've got about a 65, 68 mile run back in.
18:56Let's go take that victory lap and get back to the dock a little bit on the early side.
19:01And that's just what we did.
19:02With the Mark VI receiving its usual Starbrite washdown and Adam cutting up fish with the
19:06whole crew, we were getting that much closer to celebrating with an amazing crawfish boil.
19:11It's in the bar.
19:12It's a little bit of a drive, but they have all-you-can-eat crawfish on Wednesdays.
19:15It's called Where You At Seafood.
19:25And, yeah, I like to go there and eat as many crawfish as I can.
19:29All I can say is that Destin lived up to its reputation as being a premier offshore fishing center.
19:34Yes, he got some long runs to go to get into quality of pelagic fishing, 40 miles out to
19:39100 Fathom Curve, and then he could go from points there beyond.
19:42See, this was my first time fishing with George.
19:44Had a great trip.
19:45He's obviously got a rabbit's foot that he keeps somewhere on that boat because it was an epic day.
19:50And so I really enjoyed fishing with him and sure hope to get to do it again in the future.
19:53When the sword bite is on here, it is on.
19:56And as far as somebody who has it dialed in, he is definitely the man.
20:00And he kept us busy.
20:01And I could tell you what, we slept well that night.
20:04And we loaded up the Mark VI for that long haul back to South Florida.
20:08And we were feeling good about the show and even better that we knew that the whole entire crew had a lot of fresh swordfish
20:13that we would definitely dine on in the days ahead.
