00:00On this week's World of Saltwater Fishing, we're going to a very familiar place of mind, the Marquesas, west to Key West in the Florida Keys.
00:07And there might be some tacos involved. That's your spoiler alert. Stay tuned.
00:25George Bovarumo's World of Saltwater Fishing. Big fish don't stand a chance.
00:30As anyone who's followed my World of Saltwater Fishing television series or my writings in saltwater sportsman magazines, know that the Marquesas, which are about 28 miles west to Key West in the Florida Keys, remain a favorite destination of mine.
00:53This is where I cut a lot of my angling teeth in my youth because this is my father's favorite place to go to fish.
01:00You're going to catch a lot of fish here. It's a place where you go for fast action.
01:04So if you have somebody who's very impatient and they don't like waiting for a strike, you take them to the Marquesas because the rods will always keep bending.
01:13Of course, there's one headliner off the Marquesas and that's the mutton snapper.
01:17And that's what brought us here. I have what I call my friends in the Marquesas that we're going to be joining up and going down and fishing together.
01:26Friend, Diego Toran, I've known him for a number of years. He's a fellow MAKO owner. He's a retired firefighter.
01:32I came down to the Florida Keys 1989. Been a little while now. And I moved down mainly because of my job.
01:41I got a job at an NAS Boca Chica here at the Naval Base, which is like 10 miles, actually eight miles out of Key West.
01:49So I did almost four years in the Navy Fire Department and 28 and a half years in the city of Key West, Key West Fire Department.
01:56He was going to jump aboard the Mark VI for this trip, as would Armani Garcia.
02:02You know, some people say that I'm part of the new generation, the young guns of Godin.
02:06And, you know, coming from someone like George, it's really an honor to hear that, you know, grow up watching George.
02:11So for me to be, you know, in the new scene and out there Godin every day, it's really an honor to hear that, you know.
02:18Now, Armani is one of those young guys that has a passion for fishing.
02:21Sometimes we, you know, go bird watching in the morning and then we'll go fishing.
02:26And a lot of times, you know, a big hit with my charters is taking people to the sandbar or to a nice island area hidden from the wind.
02:34And we'll cook up some fresh fish tacos, ceviche, or even sometimes a pokey out there on the boat.
02:39One of the places that he likes to go to a lot, his favorite place of his, is the Marquesas.
02:44So here we go.
02:47I met up with Diego and Armani at the Perry Hotel Marina and we were all set to head west.
02:54So, of course, we got to load up on pinfish.
02:56We had a trap that was set.
02:58So with both wells filled with live pinfish, we started to charge through and ultimately came through Key West Harbor.
03:05And, of course, here comes a cruise ship coming in.
03:11We passed a cruise ship.
03:13We put the bow of the Mark VI to the west.
03:15We are now on the southern side and decided to run the Atlantic at a pretty good clip to get down to the Marquesas.
03:22We cut across and now it was all about rocks in the Gulf.
03:27Now it's time to go to work and catch some fish.
03:30And I found myself in that position right off the bat and it was a red grouper.
03:34Nice, George.
03:37Like I said, I want to eat them.
03:39It's a little grouperish, the way it's staying down.
03:42Let me know if you need a gaff there, George.
03:45I'll let you know when I get a good look at it.
03:46It's just very grouper-like.
03:50One of the traditional red grouper, the Marquesas.
03:54And what do we have here?
03:56A red grouper.
03:59That's definitely the Marquesas.
04:03Sure is.
04:03Without a doubt.
04:05Fish that size.
04:06In the mix, you'll get some good muttons.
04:07You'll get some nice red grouper.
04:09But this is the Marquesas Marquee fish.
04:13Red grouper.
04:14Go back and grow up.
04:16George Poveromo's world of saltwater fishing is proudly brought to you by Penn.
04:21Let the battle begin.
04:22Mako.
04:23You'll find them where the fish are.
04:25Bass Pro Shops and Cabela's.
04:27Your adventure starts here.
04:28Mercury Marine.
04:29Go boldly.
04:30George.
04:33The fishing action is beginning to heat up.
04:36Our goal?
04:37Boat a few snappers for a cookout at sea later in the day.
04:40I'm with Diego Toyran and Armani Garcia.
04:43And we're fishing off the Marquesas some 25 miles west of Key West in the Florida Keys.
04:48And this is very basic fishing in that you don't need elaborate rigs to fish these shallow
04:54gulf rocks.
04:57I always prefer a knocker rig.
04:59From there, you dip out a live pinfish.
05:02Take the hook.
05:02Go into the lower jaw.
05:03Out the upper jaw.
05:05Cast it back.
05:0610, 15 feet.
05:08Keep the bale open at its bottom.
05:09Close the bale.
05:10And all you do at that point is come tight to the line and you hold it.
05:15And you know when that strike's going to happen because the pinfish starts freaking out.
05:19And you feel those vibrations telegraphing back up through the braid.
05:22Then all of a sudden, you see a little subtle tap on the rod tip.
05:25Then another tip.
05:27And then when that fish commits, the rod gets pulled down.
05:30You simply whine as you're lifting up the rod.
05:33Get that circle hook set.
05:35Oh, there you go.
05:36Check this out.
05:37Oh, nice, George.
05:38That turned out.
05:40Come over to your side, Jake.
05:41I need a little racing room.
05:43Go ahead.
05:44That turned out to be a little bit bigger, huh?
05:46It did.
05:46It grew.
05:47He woke up.
05:48Looks like the right one there, George.
05:50I got news for you there.
05:52And on light tackle.
05:53Isn't that beautiful?
05:55Yeah.
05:56Sometimes you get a fish like this, you sweat it a little bit on light tackle, but it's fun.
06:00You know what?
06:00I remember back in the days.
06:01Could I go back 40 years seeing George Poveroma World of Saltwater Fishing?
06:06I want to tell you.
06:07I want to tell you.
06:07I'm 40.
06:07Come on, now.
06:09There we go.
06:09There's a leader.
06:10There's your beautiful mutton.
06:11Nice mutton.
06:18Beautiful.
06:18Nice, George.
06:19Beautiful.
06:20Beautiful fish.
06:21That's it.
06:22This is the, you know, we mentioned the red grouper being the marquee fish.
06:29This is the prize that you come to Marquesa's for right here.
06:32Wow, it sure is.
06:33Right here.
06:33Look at that.
06:34Look at that.
06:34Look at the colors on that thing.
06:36Oh, my goodness.
06:37It is pretty darn amazing.
06:39We were really going to town and doing well, and everybody was hooking up from Armani to
06:44Diego to me and just going through the motions.
06:48These pin authorities are smooth, man.
06:51A little red.
06:56Right in the corner, look.
06:57Now, that's a little grouper.
07:03It's a little black.
07:05He fooled me.
07:06You know, they hit hard.
07:11That's a little red, actually.
07:14There he is, George.
07:15Another mutton.
07:16Switch places with you.
07:17The way he was running.
07:20Nice.
07:21Come on, George.
07:21Secure that other mutton.
07:22You're going to fish by yourself, buddy.
07:26Feels like I am.
07:29Coming over again.
07:31He's making us dance here, George.
07:34I like that teamwork.
07:36And who's with the net?
07:38I got you.
07:39That's another pink lady there, George.
07:41It feels every bit like one.
07:47Armani, here you go.
07:48Want to do the honors?
07:49Yes, sir.
07:50Coming your way.
07:52And we got another one.
07:53Nice, man.
07:54Oh, yeah.
07:54Look at this.
07:55Oh, yeah.
07:56See, I'm going to touch the drag.
07:57There you go.
07:58I like this.
07:59Diego, could you slide over so I can put my mutton in?
08:02Sure.
08:04Unless you want to take a chance comparing it to one I caught
08:06and come up on a small end.
08:08Now, this feels like a little grouper.
08:10All right.
08:11Watch your feet.
08:11Here, go.
08:12You know, we always need a newcomer in the area.
08:16What is it first?
08:17Oh, a little mutton snapper.
08:19Oh, look at that.
08:21There you go.
08:21Oh, he's not going to count, Bert.
08:23Look at that.
08:24I start getting on.
08:24You guys let me get ahead with the muttons,
08:27and you're getting all jealous,
08:28figuring you can't let me come in here
08:29because you live down here.
08:31All right.
08:32Well, you guys have fun with your mutton.
08:34It's okay.
08:35Because this one gets to get away.
08:37Key West and the fabulous Florida Keys
08:39is a magical and certainly entertaining destination,
08:42fishing aside.
08:43A certain Hemingway-esque dominates the theme here.
08:46For instance, visitors can take into Hemingway Home and Museum
08:49where Hemingway lived from 1931 to 1939
08:53and penned classics for whom the bell tolls
08:56and to have and have not.
08:58You'll also see a colony of cats,
09:00many of them six-toe and descendants
09:02from Hemingway's time here.
09:04And what a better way to unwind in Key West
09:06than at the Pappas Pillar Rum Distillery
09:08and Hemingway Social Club.
09:10Did you know that a bottle of Pappas Pillar Rum
09:12is shaped like a canteen,
09:14including its compass-like cap?
09:16This is a tribute to Hemingway's service in World War I
09:19as an ambulance driver for the American Red Cross.
09:22And did you know that Pillar is the name
09:25of Hemingway's boat and second wife,
09:27hence the name Pappas Pillar Rum.
09:29It's a great rum recognizing
09:31a great adventurer and novelist.
09:34Over the Marquesi's shallow Gulfside rocks
09:36and hard bottom,
09:37the mutton snapper is the price catch.
09:39This hard-fighting snapper patrols
09:41the fringes of the local bottom structures
09:43in search of forage,
09:45which includes crabs,
09:46juvenile lobster,
09:47finfish,
09:48and especially ballyhoo.
09:49They're most abundant here
09:50during spring and fall.
09:52Best bet?
09:53Drop a knocker rig to bottom
09:54with a live pinfish
09:55on a 4-aught inline circle hook
09:57and 30-pound fluorocarbon leader.
10:00Freelining the live ballyhoo
10:01on a non-weighted line
10:02is also a solid tactic.

10:31George, we'll be right back.
10:32With mutton snapper in the fish box,
10:35the Marquesas trio forges ahead
10:37in search of some more
10:39piscatorial variety for our cookout.
10:42I'm with Diego Toyran
10:43and Armani Garcia
10:44off the Marquesas
10:45west of Key West
10:46in the Florida Keys.
10:48So, off these rocks
10:50west of the Marquesas,
10:51you see a lot of lane snapper,
10:52mutton snapper,
10:54just about every snapper
10:55that we have down here.
10:56Mangrove snapper,
10:58dog snappers
10:59was something
10:59that we really weren't expecting,
11:01but today we ran into
11:02a nice pile of them.
11:04And I get a hit.
11:05I mean, this was a hard hit.
11:07He definitely feels
11:08like another mutton.
11:09You know, it's incredible
11:10how they run to the bottom
11:11like that,
11:11and you could feel him.
11:12He's so close.
11:13He's within two or three feet,
11:15and you've got to be able
11:15to turn him.
11:17And with these light rods,
11:19you feel it all.
11:20You feel all the action,
11:21and it just makes it
11:21so much nicer.
11:24Nice dog snapper.
11:27All right!
11:28That's the only second time
11:29at this place in Marquesas
11:31I've seen a dog snapper.
11:37What you got in here?
11:39Dog snapper.
11:40Take a look at it.
11:40Yes.
11:41Beautiful fish.
11:43You know, this reminds me
11:44of the Pola Amarilla
11:45from Costa Rica,
11:47the Pacific.
11:50Like, you caught one last year.
11:52It's really,
11:53you know,
11:53all the years and years
11:55I've fished in Marquesas.
11:57It was about a couple years ago
11:58at this very same spot.
12:00I got an incredible dog snapper.
12:03It's the only second dog snapper
12:05that I know of
12:06taken to Marquesas.
12:07Have you got one out here before?
12:08Yep.
12:09No.
12:09Have you got a dog snapper out here?
12:11You know,
12:11a couple times a year
12:12I'll see him,
12:13but that's a healthy one.
12:14He looks like he's been eating good.
12:16I'm going to get a picture of you, Diego.
12:18It's definitely rare.
12:19So I knew the tacos were secure.
12:22At that point,
12:23I'm golden.
12:24I think I know
12:25what you got to name
12:25this spot, George.
12:26I know it, right?
12:34Besides boating
12:35the elusive dog snapper,
12:36we managed to catch yellowtail.
12:38Yellow, yellowtail.
12:39Yellowtail from Marquesas.
12:40Is that a yellowtail?
12:41Yeah.
12:42For the Marquesas,
12:43I've got a bad-sized yellowtail.
12:44That's a legal yellowtail.
12:46All right.
12:47Whoa.
12:49Well, that's a legal one.
12:51It's not bad, actually.
12:55Lane and mutton snappers.
12:57A little lane.
12:58Well, this is a staple here
13:06in the Marquesas.
13:06The lane snapper.
13:08Bog snapper.
13:09Who knows?
13:10Yeah, lane.
13:10Oh.
13:11Lane?
13:12It's a nice little lane.
13:18Serial mackerel.
13:22A gag grouper.
13:23Little guy.
13:24We were just talking about those.
13:25Nice.
13:34And even more red grouper.
13:43Kind of the ideal day
13:44in the Marquesas.
13:45And it wasn't long
13:46that we started filling up our box.
13:48How's that for a one-day
13:49Marquesas outing?
13:52A favorite of ours

15:32Towards the end of this trip
15:34before we move,
15:35because George kept on saying,
15:36it's slowing down,
15:37it's slowing down.
15:37Let's go ahead and move.
15:39I said, okay,
15:40boom.
15:40Hopefully he's a
15:41black group
15:43were my favorite.
15:44I see a night,
15:46whoa,
15:47check that out.
15:48Whoa,
15:48you're doing good with that.
15:49Three.
15:50Well,
15:51here it is.
15:52Another one,
15:53George.
15:53Unreal.
15:54Huh?
15:55Beautiful.
15:56This is a little bit nicer.
15:59What a beautiful fish.
16:01Again,
16:02Costa Rica has
16:03one of these snappers
16:05is pretty much identical
16:07to him.
16:09Dog snapper.
16:11Here in the Marquesas.
16:13I get a dog snapper.
16:14The rock pilot we're fishing,
16:16there's so many varieties
16:17as you can see here.
16:18So this is how
16:19the Marquesas goes.
16:22And ironically,
16:23there were two
16:25dog snappers taken.
16:27And again,
16:28going back
16:28to the dog snappers,
16:30a couple years back,
16:32I caught my first ever
16:33dog snapper
16:34in the Marquesas.
16:35And that was the first one
16:36that my buddy Captain
16:37Mark Schmidt had seen.
16:39He was fishing with me
16:39that day.
16:41And to go see
16:42two more caught
16:43with Armani
16:45and Diego,
16:46you know,
16:46what's with the dog snapper now?
16:48Are they starting
16:49to move in
16:50or become a little bit
16:51more abundant?
16:52So even in Marquesas,
16:53things are starting
16:54to change a little bit.
16:56And I think for the better.
16:57We really worked at that
17:06and caught a lot of fish
17:07and it got to the point
17:08where it was around
17:092, 2.30ish.
17:11And we're looking
17:12at ourselves
17:12and it said,
17:13okay,
17:14Armani
17:14was here for a reason.
17:16Now it's time
17:17to add the twist.
17:19And he's going to prepare
17:20that fish
17:21that you just caught.
17:22That was on tap.
17:24So we ran the Mark 6
17:25to the Marquesas
17:27to Moonee Harbor.
17:28And we anchored
17:29just off the entrance
17:31to Moonee Harbor.
17:32We took out
17:33the portable grill,
17:34got that ready.
17:35And I started
17:35doing my magic
17:36and I call it
17:38cooking on the half shell
17:39where you get
17:40these snappers,
17:41you fillet them,
17:42you leave the skin on them
17:43and you put that skin side
17:44down on the grill.
17:46A little bit
17:46of the Diego's
17:47magic seasoning
17:48and it doesn't take much.
