00:00On this week's World of Saltwater Fishing, we're going offshore of Virginia Beach to the Norfolk Canyon.
00:05It's going to be a billfish spectacular. You do not want to miss this episode.
00:23George Bovarumo's World of Saltwater Fishing. Big fish don't stand a chance.
00:42Here we are, Virginia Beach, Virginia. I'm with Dr. Ken Neal III, who recently retired as a dentist.
00:50And Ken's passion, probably even more than dentistry, was fishing.
00:55I've practiced dentistry for 36 years, joined my dad in practice.
00:59So he opened our practice in 1967. I joined him in 1989.
01:03And so I just retired this year. So now I'm a full-time fishing nut.
01:08I was only part-time before.
01:10That's how I knew Ken Neal going decades back.
01:13He's done our Saltwater Sports and Seminar Series with us.
01:16And on several occasions, I've shot our World of Saltwater Fishing series out of Virginia Beach with Ken Neal as
01:24my so-called native guide.
01:26I vividly recall some of the most remarkable trophy-striped bass fishing.
01:31We did one cold December night. We've had remarkable amberjack fishing.
01:36We've done pretty much all.
01:38Cobia bottom fishing, the whole routine.
01:40Here I am with Ken. We were the guests of Captain Russ Costinas aboard top-notch sport fishing, which is
01:48a 58-foot sport fishing boat.
01:50And working the cockpit would be his son, Bobby Costinas.
01:54Well, the top-notch my brother and I built, this is a 6'1 that we built.
01:58My son actually bought my brother's portion out.
02:02So we're going to continue running the top-notch right out of Virginia Beach.
02:06That mid-Atlantic area, when you start coming into August, September, they get a remarkable run of white marlin.
02:16So here we go.
02:17Ken and I meet up at the top-notch, and we start steaming off to the area of the Norfolk
02:23Canyon.
02:34Now, leading us off, a great indicator of what's going on in terms of water circulation features,
02:40water temperature breaks, and where any eddying is occurring, is Roth's fishing forecast analysis.
02:47So what we were looking for is where was some of that warmer water or current in relationship to the
02:53Norfolk Canyon.
02:54And it was a game of edges.
02:56We're going to try to find that current edge, which is always marked by a water surface temperature break.
03:03And that has the ability to cause upwellings.
03:07Nutrients bloom around these upwellings.
03:10Nutrients, in turn, attract smaller baitfish.
03:12The smaller baitfish, in turn, attract the fish that we're looking for.
03:16In our case, it would be billfish.
03:18And hopefully, we get a shot at a couple of yellowfin tuna, too, which this is not a bad time
03:22to catch them as well.
03:23So we finally get to an area that we had favorable water surface temperatures and a good turn edge.
03:32Had a good-looking spread of ballyhoo out.
03:34And then the art of trolling, especially for billfish, and again, white marlin in particular,
03:40is you have to make your boat look like a major league commotion of distressed baitfish.
03:48So how this came into play was Bobby set down two dredges.
03:55So the objective is to drop them back and deep to the point where you could still see these dredges.
04:04For if a billfish comes up on them, you could see that billfish.
04:08You could bring up a bait or grab a pitch bait and send it to them.
04:11Then we had daisy-chain squid teasers up on the surface.
04:16So we had a rather elaborate spread in position.
04:19And Russ was up there working his magic, working bottom contours,
04:25playing off the edge as the water surface temperature break, all set for the first strike.
04:30And fortunately, or unfortunately, based on how I'm going to spin this story here,
04:36that first strike came rather rapidly.
04:40George Fovaromo's World of Saltwater Fishing is proudly brought to you by
04:44Penn, let the battle begin.
04:46Mako, you'll find them where the fish are.
04:49Bass Pro Shops and Cabela's, your adventure starts here.
04:52Mercury.
04:54George, we'll be right back.
04:56Alice Cooper had a 1970s era hit song called No More Mr. Nice Guy.
05:01I think I need to subscribe to that theme based on what's about to happen in the Norfolk Canyon
05:06off Virginia Beach with Ken Neal and the top-notch sport fishing team.
05:10This could be described as the case where good guys sometimes don't finish first.
05:16I'm going to explain why.
05:18Over my fishing career, I've come very close to catching all nine billfish species of the world.
05:29The one missing from my list is a spearfish.
05:32But on this particular day, and on this particular first strike, Rod goes down.
05:38Ken, be my guest.
05:39Go for it.
05:40There's a different grain water somehow.
05:46He's coming up.
05:52Coming up, coming up.
05:55Try not to pop him, Bob, if you can.
06:01Oh, there he is.
06:02Look at that pretty fish.
06:09Fellas?
06:12Bobby?
06:12Good sir.
06:13I don't think that's a white.
06:17Yeah.
06:17That's a round-scale spearfish.
06:19Oh, you're kidding me.
06:20Beautiful fish.
06:21Beautiful fish.
06:21It's a round-scale.
06:22It's a round-scale.
06:23Are you sure?
06:24Yeah.
06:24Look at how lit up he is like that.
06:26Yeah, that's a round-scale spearfish.
06:27Holy Christ.
06:29Oh, sorry.
06:30That's what I needed.
06:31Yeah, I was just reconfirming my ID.
06:35They don't have, you know, the spots you see on the dorsal fin on the whites.
06:38They don't have those.
06:40Okay.
06:41Did you get one shot?
06:42And they also call those hatchet marlins sometimes.
06:44See how it's got that hatchet look?
06:45You can't really predict that.
06:52Yeah, that's a round-scale spearfish.
06:54Wow.
06:56We didn't even know that was a species recently.
06:59Thank you, Bobby.
07:00That was awesome.
07:01I've got to tell you, you know, sometimes, you know, where it does not pay to be a gentleman,
07:06this was one of the cases.
07:07I said, you get the first fish and you get the spearfish, right?
07:10Yes, I did.
07:11But that's the only billfish species I need to complete the whole quest of the world,
07:15all the world's billfish species.
07:16Oh, you messed up, didn't you?
07:17I think you can't be a gentleman anymore in these days.
07:20Good guys sometimes don't finish first.
07:23And that was definitely a textbook case, but that's okay.
07:25We were glad to get this for the show.
07:28Very happy for Ken, who said that that was his sixth round-scale spearfish.
07:33So I wish he told me that before he gave me the first shot.
07:36But anyway, we got something planned for next season.
07:38We're going to go specifically target spearfish.
07:41And I'm not going to tell you when and where, but you just have to watch a future episode of
07:45World of Saltwater Fishing.
07:49I said, let's take these baits up.
07:51We're going to make a run.
07:52There's some good-looking water on the northeast side of the Norfolk Canyon.
07:58So we took up the elaborate spread and he steams on.
08:02We get to our area and the spread goes back.
08:06And no sooner did those baits go in position, bam, bam, we get a quick doubleheader on white marlin.
08:12And we pulled the hooks on both.
08:13We couldn't get a solid hookup on either one.
08:15And white marlin, as soon as I think I know something, I've got them down, I'm good, then I'll miss
08:22the next five fish.
08:23And so they irritate me as much as any fish out there.
08:26So it makes me want to catch them as much as any fish out there.
08:29But there went two right there.
08:31But, you know, no fret yet.
08:33We're still really doing well.
08:34We got the spearfish.
08:35Hey, we had a shot of two whites right there.
08:38So they're fish around.
08:39We're going to work at it and we're going to really do well.
08:43Shortly after, bam, bam, another double.
08:46But different acting fish.
08:48Something blew up on it.
08:49Yeah, I don't think it was a...
08:51Okie doop.
08:52Yeah, I got one, Ken.
08:54I got one.
08:55Hold them right there, yeah.
08:58Yeah, George hooked up.
09:00All right, there we are.
09:00All right, cool.
09:02I got them though.
09:03You hooked up.
09:04We got a double going there.
09:05That's two.
09:06Sworn by fish.
09:08Three hooked up, I guess.
09:09And they were popping some others around here.
09:11Let's see what we got.
09:12Now I'll try to keep them apart.
09:13We hooked up two.
09:15We're holding on to two right now.
09:16Oh, thank you so much.
09:19Tuna.
09:20Okay.
09:21No wonder it's fighting so hard.
09:25Keep her...
09:26Keep...
09:26Real...
09:26Yeah, there you go.
09:28Realing up the slack.
09:28There you go.
09:39Got them?
09:40Yep.
09:40Good job, John.
09:41I'm going to freeze full.
09:42Spin it around to the camera.
09:43Get them in a cockpit.
09:44That's a...
09:45There you go.
09:45That's a nice...
09:46Woo!
09:47That light gear.
09:51That's a heck of a...
09:51We had dinner.
09:52That's a heck of a bycatch there.
09:54Where the hell is that hook?
09:57It has held so far, but...
10:05Nice job, Bobby.
10:06There you go.
10:06Good job.
10:06Bobby, excellent job.
10:08Jump down here and hammered up behind the fish.
10:10Okay, and jump back there.
10:11Nice fish.
10:12Nice job.
10:12There you go.
10:13Good job.
10:15That was definitely our bounty that we're going to take back to South Florida.
10:18And that pretty much wrapped up day one.
10:21So we steamed all the way back to Virginia Beach Fishing Center, where Russ and the top-notch
10:26run out of.
10:27And I've got to tell you, which is typical of Virginia Beach and some other mid-Atlantic
10:33places, when the boat pulls back up, they even have fish cleaning services for you, too.
10:37So we dragged those yellowfin's over, and they just did a remarkable job.
10:43Russ said, I want you and Ken at the boat 4.30 again in the morning.
10:47These canyon runs are definitely early morning and late arrivals in the afternoon.
10:52But I'll tell you what, when the fishing is good out there, it's certainly worth the
10:55lost sleep.
10:57George Fovaromo's World of Saltwater Fishing is proudly brought to you by Simrad.
11:03Rapala holds the world record for world records.
11:07Suffix, always use the best line.
11:11Starbright Boat Care Products, blending technology with performance since 1973.
11:16George, we'll be right back.
11:19As day two dawns, and with white marlin our quest, we head back offshore to the Norfolk
11:25Canyon.
11:26I'm with Ken Neal and the Top-Notch Fishing Team.
11:30Before we get back to the fishing, let me tell you about a gem of a coffee shop that we
11:34found
11:34in Virginia Beach.
11:36Located on Laskin Road at the Hilltop East Shopping Center, Roast Rider is known for its
11:41selection of coffees, house-made cold brews, and espresso from noted industry pioneers.
11:46They also offer pizza, sandwiches, pastries, and much more from popular area proprietors.
11:51Roast Rider's visitors booth is a collection of personalized handwritten post-it notes by
11:57customers from both local and afar.
11:59I was asked to add to the collection.
12:02Roast Rider also provided cold brew bottles for the boat for a good pick-us-up during our
12:06steams to and from the Norfolk Canyon.
12:09Let me showcase where we stayed during this journey.
12:12We stayed at the courtyard in Marriott, Virginia Beach South.
12:15The oceanfront property is within walking distance to a number of attractions and dining establishments.
12:20Best of all, for us, it was a short drive to and from the Virginia Beach Fishing Center.
12:26And on that note, let's get back to the actual fishing.
12:29Those diesels fire up, all the tackles put back into position, and then we know the game
12:35plan.
12:35We're heading back out, and we had some fresh intel from Ross Fishing Forecast Analyses where
12:40some of that water moved or transitioned around the canyon, Norfolk Canyon.
12:45And here we go, day two.
12:47We get to the area, rush shuts down the top notch, gets into a good trolling speed, and
12:54again, no sooner had those baits gone out, then bam-bam.
12:58I'm hooked up.
12:59You hooked up?
13:01Well, now I am, too.
13:03All right, we got that, you got to have one.
13:05Whoa, that was jumping right there.
13:08All right, if I can.
13:09You cannot, your dredges are not up.
13:10All right.
13:12Holy moly.
13:18I can't see where my line is with George.
13:20Keep it coming, George.
13:26That's not a baby one.
13:28All right, I got it.
13:29There you go.
13:30Got the leader.
13:30Woo-hoo!
13:31You got the leader.
13:34Whoa.
13:37Come and find you.
13:43All right, you got that one.
13:44All right, there you go.
13:45Ken, up to you now.
13:47Release.
13:48Ken's on now.
13:48Got mine.
13:51Hey, now, if that's a spearfish, you're swimming back.
13:55I think this is the white.
13:56We get the first one out as a currency.
14:00He might be tailwrapped.
14:01This might be tailwrapped now.
14:02He is tailwrapped now.
14:10There he is.
14:11There he is.
14:12Good job, Bobby.
14:13Good job.
14:14Let's swim him.
14:14Let me swim him.
14:15Yeah, let me swim him.
14:16Good job, Bobby.
14:19Swim him a little bit.
14:19The fish was tailwrapped, and Bobby was able to untangle him, and fish is being revived now.
14:35It looks good.
14:37All good.
14:37Good job, Bobby.
14:38I don't know what it would.
14:40Woo!
14:41Pretty work, guys.
14:42That was fun.
14:44That's it.
14:45That's it.
14:46Gave everything I wanted.
14:48All right.
14:48Great job, guys.
14:49Good job, Captain.
14:51White marlin might be the big game headliners during their push through mid-Atlantic waters,
14:55but overall, yellowfin tuna are the more popular and sought-after of the two.
14:59Yellowfins are revered for the hard, long fights and highly-priced table fare.
15:03When yellowfins are widely scattered, trolling covers more ocean and increases the odds of
15:08catching them.
15:09Conversely, when yellowfins are abundant, chunking and live baiting deliver the most
15:13impressive results.
15:14Best bet, when a yellowfin is hooked on the troll, maintain speed in heading with the goal
15:19of loading up more rods.

16:35Okay, back on the troll.
16:37And we're all amped up here.
16:39When you're trolling and you get a fairly long dry spell and then bam, the rod goes down
16:44and wakes you right up.
16:45And my rod went down.
16:47I had a white marlin on.
16:50He came in there like 100 miles an hour on that teaser.
16:53Look at that pretty thing, huh?
16:56Can't be by himself.
16:58Could he?
17:00Tearing up the water.
17:04Good job.
17:06Good job.
17:13I tipped.
17:14There we go.
17:14That counts.
17:16You got to come up here.
17:16You want me to go up to the blue line?
17:18You want me to go up to the blue line?
17:18You want me to go up to the corner?
17:28You want me to back up step so I can get to it?
17:30You got him?
17:30Yep.
17:31Go for it a little bit.
17:35It's underneath you.
17:39Keep cranking up the slack though.
17:41Yep, I got you.
17:41Go ahead.
17:51Beautiful fish.
17:55We finally got the leader to Bobby.
17:57He released another white marlin.
17:58So now we're three out of five.
18:02So at the end of the day, we found a high flyer of some commercial gear and went by it
18:08and saw 15, 20 dolphins just greyhounded jumping right towards us.
18:14They hit everything we had and we caught four or five of them to finish out the day.
18:18I was wondering when the dolphin were going to show up and after all, he did come all the way
18:22up from South Florida to catch dolphin.
18:28A little dolphin, a little marlin, a little spearfish.
18:39It looks like a swarm of bees coming at you.
18:41Yeah, there's plenty of dolphin out there.
18:47I think we may have boated four or five on that exchange and released a couple of them.
18:53And that was it.
18:54We just kept pushing away.
18:55We had tuna to take home.
18:57Really no need to really overdo it on the mahi.
19:01And it was a fantastic day.
19:03Ken and I just sat back there in the cabin and reminisced about past fishing trips, future ones, the whole
19:09bit.
19:09With two amazing days in a can, the crew and I celebrated with dinner at Waterman's Restaurant.
19:14When it comes to dining in Virginia Beach, Waterman's Surfside Grill is a landmark seafood restaurant.
19:20Noted for serving seafood caught locally and from U.S. waters, I ordered one of the evening specialties, broiled flounder.
19:28Prepared correctly, flounder is outstanding, whether fried, blackened, or broiled, and Waterman's prep was spot on.
19:35Dessert was also outstanding.
19:37Waterman's full bar complements the restaurant and its amazing beachfront view.
19:42It was a great two days.
19:45Everybody on that boat were just perfect, fun to be with, all very professional.
19:52Every trip has been a blast.
19:53He is super fun to fish with.
19:55He knows his stuff.
19:57You know, you think of a television guy being kind of a, you know, not as hardcore, but he is.
20:03He's a true fisherman.
20:04Fishing with George was great.
20:06We had a really good time.
20:07It was laid back.
20:08We caught a bunch of fish.
20:10It was a great day.
20:12And when you have guys like Bobby and Russ Costinos and Ken Neal riding shotgun with you, you cannot go
20:19long.
