00:00Oh, what a goal! Oh, look at that! Absolutely phenomenal!
00:05Rooney O'Hall!
00:07Welcome to Match of the Dead.
00:30Match of the Dead
00:59Bournemouth start of the day.
01:01Second in the table and travel to Manchester City
01:03looking for a first ever Premier League victory at the Etihad.
01:06Your commentator for this one is Steve Bauer.
01:11Bournemouth bring the top flight's longest unbeaten run to Manchester
01:14and a total of 18 points from 27,
01:18their best ever start to a Premier League season.
01:21City have won eight of their last nine league games here at the Etihad
01:24and make four changes to the team that lost to Villa
01:27as Doku, Gonzalez, Cherki and O'Reilly all start.
01:31Phil Foden becomes the youngest City player
01:33to reach 200 Premier League appearances for the club.
01:36Rodri returns to the bench.
01:39Bournemouth recall Diakite in defence
01:41and David Brooks, who had ten years in City's academy.
01:44Young Frenchman Eli Junior Kruppi
01:46bids to become only the fourth teenager ever
01:49to score in four Premier League games in a row.
01:51Ivan Ielsen is back as a substitute.
01:57Docking.
02:00Adams in ahead of Foden.
02:02Tavernier out to Brooks.
02:05Taking on O'Reilly.
02:06Beating O'Reilly.
02:07Bournemouth in front.
02:08No.
02:09Flag is up.
02:10Won't count.
02:12Adam Nunn, the referee's assistant,
02:14raised that straight away.
02:16It was Kruppi who put it into the back of the net.
02:1850 seconds on the clock.
02:23And no need to debate that one.
02:25And it didn't really need to be either.
02:32Jimenez.
02:39Swing in by Brooks, cleared by Diaz.
02:44And Gonzalez.
02:45Oh, Cherki's flick.
02:50And Haaland's away.
02:51True first chasing.
02:52It's Erling Haaland.
02:56Yet again.
02:59In the situation he craves for,
03:02he finishes yet another.
03:05That's his 16th of the season.
03:09Little flick from him there.
03:12But watch the awareness of Cherki here.
03:15That's a perfectly weighted header.
03:17And quite simply,
03:19Haaland did the rest.
03:22It's only his second Premier League goal against Bournemouth.
03:25And they've done pretty well keeping him quiet over the years.
03:28No chance for Petrovic,
03:29despite his best attempts.
03:33Brooks.
03:34Semaño.
03:45Retracking back by Nunes.
03:46Bournemouth's first corner of the game.
03:53Scott with it.
03:54We've got something on it, but not enough.
03:58And Bournemouth a level from the set piece.
04:04Now the Manchester City players surround Anthony Taylor,
04:07wanting the foul.
04:09I don't think they're going to get anything there.
04:14Tyler Adams kept his eyes firmly on the ball.
04:18And volleyed Bournemouth level.
04:211-1 at the Etihad.
04:25Donnarumma has expressed his opinion too strongly.
04:29And he has been shown the yellow card.
04:33Haaland's head of looking for Cherki.
04:34He's on to it.
04:36Couldn't make any further progress.
04:37Picked up though by Doku.
04:39And he's found Cherki.
04:42Foden then coming in.
04:43Doku takes over.
04:48Cherki.
04:50Desperate block.
04:51Bernardo Silva now.
04:54Diakite very effective.
04:56Manchester City appeal for hands.
04:59It's all happening at the Etihad.
05:03Look at it deflected.
05:05Yes it did.
05:06It comes off his knee and onto his hands.
05:13First team from Cherki.
05:18Haaland's got goal side again.
05:20In he goes charging through.
05:24As ruthless as ever.
05:29The main man steps forward yet again.
05:33Two goals.
05:35And that one was more challenging than the first.
05:38Truffaut was playing him up.
05:40But once he gets into his stride here,
05:41the angle went slightly against him.
05:44Didn't panic.
05:46Knew exactly what he was doing.
05:49Absolutely clinical.
05:5213 league goals already.
05:55Manchester City back in front.
05:57They lead by two goals to one.
06:01They've got two here against Everton in the last home game.
06:03He was furious.
06:04He didn't get the hat-trick and the match ball.
06:06It'll be in his mind here.
06:08That's brilliant towards O'Reilly.
06:09Are they going to score again?
06:11Nico O'Reilly.
06:14How did that stay out?
06:17Jimenez did brilliantly.
06:20He just diverted it away from Phil Foden.
06:24The young Spaniard to prevent 3-1.
06:33O'Reilly brilliantly found here by Doku.
06:35He had so much time.
06:39But Jimenez did brilliantly.
06:41Scampers back.
06:42The young full-back virtually on the line.
06:45Otherwise, Foden would have had a tap-in.
06:47who had reached the 35th minute and the stadium applaud to remember Guy Bradshaw,
06:59the huge Manchester City supporter who tragically died in Benidorm
07:03ahead of their recent Champions League meeting with Villarreal.
07:06Oh, look at the space now for Doku.
07:12Who hesitated because Haaland was offside.
07:14Now he's on.
07:15Is this the hat-trick already?
07:16No.
07:17Denied by Petrovic.
07:19The flag stayed down.
07:20And he timed it brilliantly, the run.
07:24Decent stop from the Serbian goalkeeper.
07:29For today, he's sighted anything behind all season for 98 minutes in total.
07:36Foden.
07:39Free kick.
07:40Soninho caught his knee.
07:48Important moments, these, for Bournemouth, right on the stroke of half-time.
07:51Cherki.
07:53Petrovic.
07:57He got across well there, the Bournemouth goalkeeper.
08:09Cherki.
08:10No way past Brooks on that occasion.
08:15He quickly finds Semenyo.
08:19Early from him.
08:20Back to Brooks.
08:22Kruppi.
08:24Into the side netting, Tavernier who was looking for the pullback.
08:29Encouraging though for Bournemouth.
08:36Now Tavernier for Bournemouth.
08:38He's got Brooks to his right here.
08:43Alex Scott bursting through.
08:45And then the effort from Kruppi is turned away from Donnarumma.
08:50Very neatly work from Bournemouth though.
08:53Nice height for Donnarumma who did just enough.
09:00Cherki.
09:03Into Foden.
09:04That will come to O'Reilly.
09:07And he's made absolutely short.
09:12Niko O'Reilly with his third Premier League goal for Manchester City.
09:18To give them daylight.
09:19To give them daylight.
09:22Foden on the stretch.
09:26He had the composure.
09:29He was allowed to make his way into the penalty area.
09:33The invitation was there.
09:34He accepted it through the legs of St. Essick.
09:40Manchester City 3.
09:42Bournemouth 1.
09:43There's Ars.
09:49Harland stayed onside.
09:51He knows he's got Doku in support.
09:53He's got Foden bursting through as well.
09:56Now Cherki.
09:57Foden.
09:58Cherki.
10:00Always rising.
10:02Very pleasant on the eye though.
10:05Cherki's enjoyed himself.
10:06And just a second league start for the club.
10:09Two assists of course for both Harland goals.
10:14Semenyo.
10:18Crossing opportunity here.
10:21In came Tavernier.
10:23Opportunity.
10:26Excellent work from Semenyo.
10:28He got ahead of O'Reilly.
10:32Momentarily there.
10:34Marcus Tavernier.
10:36Just couldn't get the clean contact
10:38that he wanted.
10:41And with nine minutes to go
10:43for the 15th time.
10:46One goal away from a hat-trick
10:48in his City career.
10:50And Lening Haaland is taken off
10:52at the double again.
10:56Wrapped in the proverbial cotton wool.
11:04Semenyo.
11:06Roundtree fair again.
11:08Rainders.
11:10Beaten away by Petrovic.
11:13Sweet strike from the Dutchman.
11:16Straight out the Bournemouth goalkeeper
11:18who wanted to maintain his concentration.
11:20Harland at the heart of it yet again as Manchester City return to winning ways up to second in the Premier League and just the second defeat all season for Bournemouth.
11:35City three, Bournemouth one.
11:37Two assists for you for Erling Haaland.
11:40Two assists for you for Erling Haaland.
11:41Yeah, I know Erling, he know me and when I play with him and he play with me, it's very simple because my job is to give the ball for Erling and he score.
11:55I can score with him but it's better if I pass the good ball for him and he score.
12:01I want to win games and I want to help the team become a better football team, become a better football club so that's my job.
12:08I think there were probably a few fantasy managers that were not so happy when I got served up.
12:15And the reaction when you went to 1-1?
12:17I'm 10 years here. I know perfectly everyone here.
12:20So the goal that was not disallowed is, I'm sorry.
12:24I'm sorry.
12:26Sometimes maybe one day we will explain you how it's not the keeper and pull the hand and make unstable that.
12:34But we know each other quite well from one decade.
12:36In the first half, Erling was very good.
12:40We decided to go and press like we always do but he found our backs, I think, in the first two goals very well and there are risks that you have to accept sometimes when you play like this and they punish us.
12:57I'm pleased with the performance overall but you need special things to get something from these games.
13:05I think Bournemouth play an outstanding game.
13:08They are incredibly well managed so it's not a surprise for me that what they had done last season and give a lot of credit for the fact that they lost three of the four defenders last season and still they are there.
13:19And every game is impressive. That's why I'm really, really pleased with what we have done today.
13:23We'll talk more about Bournemouth in a little while. Ryan Cherky made it sound very simple there. Just get the ball to Haaland and he'll score and there's been a lot of talk this season about City playing to Haaland's strengths but a bit more goes into it than just launching it to him.
13:41And an awful lot went into it today. He scored two. They created two unbelievable opportunities for him to score and he'd be disappointed that he didn't get a hat-trick in the end today and three one-on-ones with a goalkeeper.
13:52It was a really interesting battle. Bournemouth pressing team, fantastic without the ball, transition, break, a lot of pace and attack to City's build-up.
14:00So going into the game today it was a really interesting watch for me to see what was going to come out on top.
14:06And looking at the clips we're actually starting here with City's second goal and City had a real emphasis today about playing through the middle of the pitch.
14:15And it was really interesting because normally that's where Bournemouth's strengths are to regain the ball and break.
14:21But yeah, as I say, there was a real emphasis on this. O'Reilly on the ball at the moment.
14:25Docker was coming in off the line playing through the middle of the pitch.
14:28Foden was coming in through the middle of the pitch. Cherky was coming in the middle of the pitch.
14:32Bernardo Silva was in there with Gonzalez at times. There was five and six players in there.
14:36And at this point it's a really interesting point to make because most teams at this point would be thinking we need to play around Bournemouth or we need to play over the top because they want to press the ball.
14:48And through the middle of the pitch, if we lose it, the risk is that they might break on us and score.
14:53City really exaggerated and overloaded the middle to cause an issue for Bournemouth.
14:59So they played it and they seen the risk that they would get from it if they really connected and made it work.
15:04The 4v3 in the middle of the pitch, Bournemouth's three midfield players, needed an extra body to come and support them.
15:12Centre-back thinks I need to go in there and help to try and make the even numbers.
15:16That leaves a big space for Haaland and they connected.
15:19Foden's link-up play was fantastic all day long and that's meat and drink for Haaland.
15:24And it was a real clear picture of City's belief to think we're really exaggerating the middle because we know you need to jump
15:32and that's going to leave space in behind and same thing again here.
15:35A lot of bodies around, a lot of bodies around for this is for the first goal.
15:40Overloaded in the middle of the pitch, Bournemouth, two centre-backs think we need to help and we need to get pressure on the ball.
15:45And you can't do both.
15:47So if you're pressing, which Bournemouth are really good at, you can press forward and you can close the space.
15:51That does leave spacing behind and you see Gonzalez here again, because they've got the overload in the middle of the pitch and Cherky's in there.
15:59They found a spare man in such a small space, so many times City, which created a massive problem for Bournemouth centre-backs.
16:05And again, that by going tight and jumping and trying to make the numbers up, left the space.
16:11And again, Haaland runs clear.
16:13A lot of time to think about it, but it's never in doubt.
16:15And I have to say, it was a massive risk and reward and Pep just seen the reward.
16:22He set his team up to do that and through the middle of the pitch at times, they were fantastic City.
16:26Because that risk is, as you were saying, that moment when Bournemouth could go for the press and then they could get done.
16:33That's the risk.
16:35Yeah, and that's not a negative to Bournemouth, because Bournemouth are fantastic at it.
16:38And there's only so many teams that could pull off what City did today.
16:42And it was clever, it was brave from City, but it just shows you that actually they see the confidence to think we can play through that.
16:48And we can use their press to create the space that they're going to leave and we know that we can use it.
16:53So hopefully that's making sense.
16:55But in the end, the clips proved that and it created the space for Haaland.
16:59But actually, it was a team performance because the whole structure just connected and opened the spaces.
17:06And they had the belief in the end, the quality of some of the football is fantastic.
17:10When you're in that midfield position, when you're in the game situation, what are you looking for?
17:15What are the Manchester City players looking for?
17:17Were they looking for the Bournemouth player to go?
17:19Were they looking for the Manchester City movement?
17:22What's the trigger?
17:23I think they were waiting for that moment to find the jump to then the space going in behind.
17:29And that was different ways.
17:30Sometimes Fordham was drifting.
17:31Dockham was coming all the way across the pitch at times.
17:33But there was a fluidity about them.
17:35So it wasn't that they were in positions and they were stuck there.
17:38They were drifting in pockets.
17:39And you could see they were just waiting for that moment.
17:42And they were patient.
17:43They were playing little passes.
17:44They were provoking that jump at times where other teams might get a little bit scared and touchy and think,
17:49I don't want to play there because it's a bit of a risk.
17:52They had that confidence knowing that actually I'm making that pass for a reason to open that space up.
17:57So then he's going to make the space for then bump straight in behind.
17:59And before you know it, to be fair, Bournemouth's press was good at times.
18:03But the moments like that made the difference.
18:05And that was the key to the game.
18:07So for all that sort of in-depth tactical side of that, what did you spot?
18:14Welcome to the show, Rob.
18:16No, I've only done that because this is brilliant.
18:20And we do love this.
18:21But you spotted it.
18:22So you take the credit.
18:23Highlighting players who have got so much confidence in their teammates.
18:28And it's brilliant from Cherokee.
18:30He's got two assists today, but three celebrations.
18:32We've got a brilliant shot from here.
18:34You've got to watch him.
18:35Number 10 in the centre circle.
18:3730 yards out, Haaland.
18:38It's still four seconds before he puts it in.
18:41He knows the outcome.
18:43He knows he's got his header right.
18:44It has a feeling of inevitability about it.
18:48He did explain it in a beautiful simplicity, simple way, didn't he?
18:52Just get it to Haaland and he'll do the rest.
18:55Right.
18:55Your analysis, though, there is proper analysis here as well,
18:59which is, last night, actually, Haaland did some really good stuff on Arsenal's full-backs.
19:03You've looked at City's full-backs, who are a very different threat to the ones that Arsenal have, obviously.
19:09Yeah, they're a work in progress and they've been in development for quite some time now.
19:13And O'Reilly's probably the best left-back at the club.
19:15And Nunes has had a lot of criticism at right-back for his defensive work.
19:19And we're looking at one in an attacking sense, one in defensive sense.
19:23And this is in the third minute.
19:24O'Reilly is so confident on the ball and going forward from deep.
19:29And he's in here.
19:31He's understanding with Docu was there all afternoon, getting beyond and getting the clicks behind.
19:35And this is the danger against Bournemouth.
19:39Semenyo charging through.
19:40You realise that you've got to get back.
19:42You've got to put your body on the line.
19:44And this is where Nunes has been criticised in the past.
19:461v1s, tracking back, getting in defensive situations.
19:51And that has been such an improvement in his game, just in those one-on-one situations.
19:57O'Reilly, again, they had a lot of responsibility today because, as Michael was saying,
20:01they're playing so narrow that they had the freedom and the responsibility of the width.
20:06Again, he does brilliantly.
20:08He's so cool and composed.
20:10He's almost Haaland-esque.
20:11He's such a compliment.
20:12And he's brilliant defending to get it off the line.
20:14And then, again, you're looking at O'Reilly with an understanding with Docu.
20:18One's going wide, one's going narrow, underlapping, overlapping.
20:21It's like a consummate full-back who's been playing all his career there.
20:25And it's not been that long for him.
20:28Bournemouth, this is where you want your main man, Semenyo.
20:31Against, supposedly, the defensive weak link in the side.
20:35It's a fantastic bit of defensive work from Nunez.
20:38And then, to cap it all off, they work together from the opposite sides of the pitch.
20:43Nunez dragging one player away, creating a little bit of space for Phil Foden,
20:47who was fantastic this afternoon.
20:49And then O'Reilly, really, he's finished it like an attacking midfielder,
20:54driving in at the defence.
20:56And he just looked an absolute joy to play with today.
20:58Just a quick one on Bournemouth.
21:02They've had a fantastic start to the season.
21:04They will win more than they will lose playing like that, won't they?
21:07They definitely will.
21:08And there was enough in the game as well.
21:09And City were fantastic at times and almost would have played through most teams.
21:14But they had a good spell in the second half where they looked positive
21:18and they were creating some problems.
21:20They were a good team.
21:20They were a fantastic team.
21:22And they'll be absolutely fine.
21:23Today was just one of them games where they caught City on a good day.
21:26Yeah, they got exposed.
21:27They got exposed at critical times.
21:28And then Manchester City went into pep mode for the last half hour
21:32and really did nullify them.
21:33They did such a good job today, Manchester City.
21:36Right.
21:37West Hamming goes Newcastle on the way after October's goal of the month.
21:40West Hamming goes Newcastle on the way after October's goal.
22:10What a fantastic equaliser for the man of the moment.
22:14Saw the opportunity was there from the narrow angle.
22:19Oh, through the goalkeeper's legs.
22:25Klaibert.
22:27But I'm drawing them behind the board.
22:28Klaibert will go for a special to the winner.
22:30It was a thunderous drive.
22:39Feared one way or the other.
22:40There was the gap.
22:41He saw it.
22:42And thundered home.
22:43Kaiseido getting away from Alexis McAllister.
22:53And in behind that Liverpool back line.
22:55And what a goal that is.
22:59Oh, that's an absolute beauty from Kaiseido.
23:04A rocket from Kaiseido.
23:06Chaunin, he has room.
23:17Chaunin!
23:23There didn't seem to be much on.
23:25So he thought, why not?
23:27Good ball.
23:41Lewis Miley.
23:42Volta Mata.
23:43Brilliant.
23:45Scores all kinds of goals this kid.
23:47Impudent.
23:53And outstanding.
24:03Guides it back to Kaiseido.
24:06Lovely idea.
24:07Oh, what a touch in Luka Dina to bring it down.
24:09All of a sudden, they might be in business here.
24:12Oh, here they are.
24:13Emi Blankia.
24:14A scorcher from Emi Blankia.
24:32Fleming Cooper in here.
24:33Takes it first time.
24:36Cool as you like.
24:38What composure from Zian Fleming.
24:42And didn't he take it quite beautifully?
24:46What confidence.
24:47What composure.
24:48What a finish.

25:03With just four points from nine, it's West Ham's worst ever start to a Premier League season.
25:08Today, they're welcomed a Newcastle side without an away win in seven.
25:12Watch by Robin Cowan.
25:16Another defeat which sets another unwanted record for West Ham.
25:20They've never lost as many as eight games in their opening ten of a new season.
25:25Three changes to the side that lost at Leeds.
25:27There's a full Premier League debut for West Ham youth product Freddie Potts in midfield.
25:31Callum Wilson makes just his second start for West Ham and first under Nuno.
25:35It's also the first time in his career he has faced a former club.
25:40Sandro Tonani returns to the midfield in place of Lewis Miley for Newcastle.
25:44Emile Kraft appears in the league for the first time this campaign with Kieran Schrippier out with illness.
25:49Nick Voltemada has hit the ground running since joining the Magpies.
25:52No new signing has scored a higher share of their club's goals this season.
25:56West Ham United is just two wins in the last 12 against Newcastle United.
26:03Both of those came in the North East at St. James's Park.
26:09Some of it.
26:10Lovely give and go.
26:14Advantage played.
26:15He's being hustled and harried by Kraft.
26:18Jared Bowen off the post.
26:28It was a tremendous effort by Jared Bowen.
26:38Now West Ham looking a little light in midfield.
26:41It's Murphy.
26:47Oh, it's cruel.
26:50No sooner had Bowen hit the post at one end.
26:53Newcastle dole out the ultimate punishment at the other.
26:58Murphy worked the space way too easily away from El Haji Jouf.
27:04It was a pinpoint finished pass.
27:07Areola.
27:0926 seconds between the post being hit and Murphy hitting the back of the net.
27:15Your luck's out.
27:16Your luck's out.
27:19The only sound is coming from the away end.
27:25London Stadium is stunned.
27:31Very good challenge for Wan-Bissaka to win it back.
27:33Bowen doesn't have too many options.
27:36Wan-Bissaka, a willing runner though.
27:38Pulls it back.
27:39It's Jared Bowen.
27:41It's a penalty.
27:44It looks suspect, you've got to say.
27:47Just as Bowen was about to pull the trigger here.
27:52Let's have a look.
27:53Well, there's a touch on the ball.
27:56And they're recommending a on-field review.
28:00They might have got the faintest of touches there.
28:06After review.
28:09Newcastle 12.
28:11Clearly touches the ball.
28:12Before.
28:14Contact.
28:15With West Ham 20.
28:17The final decision, therefore.
28:19No penalty.
28:20Another hammer blow.
28:22Poor West Ham skipper.
28:23But just cannot catch a break.
28:28Never a dull moment.
28:31Supporting this club.
28:37Somerville.
28:38Scurrying forward.
28:40And is brought down.
28:41By Gimaraes.
28:43And a yellow card.
28:46For the Brazilian.
28:49Clips the back of his heel.
28:56Pacatar.
28:57Very smart save by Nick Pope.
29:04Not sure anyone was expecting that.
29:06Went low.
29:07Through the legs of Tonali.
29:09Really super stop from Nick Pope.
29:14Scored so far just seven goals in their previous nine Premier League games.
29:20West Ham United.
29:23Juve down the line for Somerville.
29:26Facing up to Kraft.
29:28Deflection on the cross.
29:30Big punch from Pope.
29:32Pacatar.
29:33Takes a...
29:34Oh!
29:37Perfection from Pacatar!
29:40The pressure pays off.
29:42It was going to take something eye-catching to beat Nick Pope.
29:48And wasn't it just?
29:51And you've got to say.
29:52It is well deserved.
29:55A good response by West Ham.
29:58Perhaps Pope could have done better with that effort.
30:02Either way.
30:03You can just feel the relief.
30:06Around the London Stadium.
30:08That's more like it.
30:12Here's Anthony Gordon.
30:21Good stop from Alphonse Areola.
30:25Still looking for his first Premier League goal of the season.
30:27Anthony Gordon.
30:30Nuno saying ahead of this game that many players are performing under their real quality.
30:34But evidence this could represent a turning point.
30:38Nicely done, Fernandes.
30:43Wan-Bissaka.
30:44Oh!
30:45It's a new goal!
30:47Sven Bodman.
30:49On the stretch.
30:51Finally, Fortune.
30:54Comes out of hiding for West Ham United.
30:59Wan-Bissaka has proved such a...
31:01Brilliant outlet down the right-hand side.
31:05It's been a really impressive response.
31:08To a devastating blow.
31:10Early in the first half.
31:12They will go in at the break.
31:13In the lead.
31:15A triple change at the beginning of this second half for Newcastle United.
31:22Eddie Howe clearly not happy with what he saw in that first half from his side.
31:30And he's starting to see Nuno's blueprint here.
31:34His team's so good at counter-attacking.
31:37Fernandes' first touch was excellent.
31:39But Fernandes onto it and then bowled over by Joel Linton.
31:44That was a bit rash.
31:51It's delivered low.
31:52It's seizing.
31:55Nick Pope in the right place.
31:57I'm not sure how much he knew about it.
32:00Joel Linton's header goes behind for a West Ham corner.
32:05It's a real awkward one.
32:06And again, Akatar going low.
32:09Socek didn't get anything on it.
32:11Strong arm there from Nick Pope.
32:15Taken short.
32:17Jouf swings it in.
32:20Tipped over the top by Pope.
32:23Kilman denied.
32:25After weathering the storm early on in the first half.
32:28Chances now starting to flow for West Ham.
32:33Akatar again goes low towards that near post.
32:36Driven towards the back post now with Fernandes.
32:46Fernandes delivers.
32:47It's a teasing one.
32:50Oh, Harvey Barnes took way too long.
32:52He's robbed by Somerville.
32:53Bowen's cross.
32:59Where's it dropping?
33:01Into the net!
33:01The flag is up!
33:05Freddy Potts thought he had his first West Ham goal in his first Premier League start.
33:14Daz looking on intensely.
33:18Initial thought is that Socek was just leaning into an offside position.
33:23Socek offside by a toe.
33:31Hold it in, Dad.
33:37Newcastle have scored seven of their last 13 Premier League goals in the final 15 minutes of games.
33:43But they just haven't looked anywhere near their best today.
33:48To Nali.
33:52Now Alanga stands it up!
33:57Newcastle's first effort on target of the second half in the 89th minute.
34:02And Asula's header.
34:04Easy pickings for Alphonse Areola.
34:07Nick Pope, forward.
34:11Away by Kilman.
34:13Jared Bowen.
34:18Pakatar.
34:20It's Bowen!
34:23And it's there!
34:26Thomas Socek!
34:29Seals the win for West Ham!
34:33Let's go!
34:37A beautifully crafted counter.
34:39Bowen onside.
34:41Couldn't quite squeeze it through.
34:43The legs of Nick Pope.
34:45Socek sliding in to make sure.
34:50A first win under Nuno Espirito Santo.
34:53A first win at home in the Premier League since February.
34:58These are the moments that make you keep coming back.
35:02It means a lot for us as a club.
35:04It means a lot for our fans.
35:05I think we were unable to give them something.
35:08And the way they give us back the support was amazing.
35:11To win anything in the Premier League you have to work very, very hard.
35:14And today they did it.
35:16It's a small step in the way we want to do it.
35:18We're going to do it again.
35:19But everything is easier.
35:21When you have a good performance you have a win.
35:23So the week it's easier.
35:25There are smiles.
35:26The legs recover faster.
35:27So all these things are so important.
35:29We haven't been good enough at home.
35:31And we wanted to change that today.
35:32You know, we knew if we win today going into next week it would be so important for us.
35:36And I thought we'd done that.
35:37You know, we had disappointment with Minot in the post.
35:40And then they scoring straight up the other end.
35:42Then getting a penalty.
35:42Then getting it overturned.
35:44And, you know, sometimes when you think your luck's against you it's never going to change.
35:47But, you know, I thought we stuck in there.
35:49Luka scored a really good goal.
35:50And then went on to score two more good goals.
35:51I thought we performed poorly off of our high standards that we've had.
35:55Especially in the last few games where we've played pretty well.
35:58But today was a bad day.
35:59That's the first time that we haven't really performed away from home.
36:02Our normal characteristics have always been there.
36:04We might not have won the games that we maybe feel we deserve to have done.
36:08But today was a dip from that.
36:10And something we need to rectify.
36:13Well, West Ham are the story here, aren't they, Rob, really?
36:15Because they needed that.
36:17And their fans have been waiting all season for something like that.
36:21Yeah, what a departure.
36:22What a change in performance just 90 minutes makes.
36:25And it was something that you're looking at energy, commitment, communication, drive,
36:30working together as a team.
36:32And you have to start off by giving credit to the manager for picking the 11 that he did.
36:36He got the shape right.
36:37He got the 11 right after so many times of asking.
36:40And we're opening it up with POTS directing traffic, communicating.
36:44And one of many combinations, this one between Paqueta, Juuf and Somerville,
36:50getting Somerville in the position he wants to be.
36:53And then you're looking at the numbers and the pace of which they're going forward.
36:56And this is so far removed from where they've been of recent weeks.
37:01This is so early in the game.
37:03You're thinking, well, they have a chance.
37:04They have the setback with the goal.
37:06But it carried on.
37:07And Wan-Bissaka, who had had a brilliant afternoon, communicating with Fernandes,
37:12that understanding of when one goes, the other one has to track round.
37:16And it sounds basic, but you've got to get it right in timing.
37:19And then Wan-Bissaka doing what he can do.
37:22And it's wonderful from Boeing as well, that combination.
37:24They won the penalty, got overturned, but they carried on going again.
37:28And this is a brilliant example of working together as a team with Paqueta,
37:33cutting off passing angles, Potts cutting off the passing to the front man,
37:37Fernandes cutting off the passing to the midfielder,
37:39Boeing stepping inside onto Tonali.
37:42They're all getting it right together as a team,
37:45driving through and then winning the regain.
37:48And from there, having the composure to say, right, where's the space?
37:52Where do we get it?
37:53Get it to our man out wide, Wan-Bissaka.
37:55He's on fire, get the crossing, another dangerous cross.
37:59And then again, Fernandes looking, Wan-Bissaka's already on his way.
38:05Jarrod Bowen, another little combination.
38:08He's caused confusion between Gordon and Byrne.
38:10They've both gone into him, created the space for Wan-Bissaka.
38:14This caps off a brilliant from first half from West Ham,
38:17where they had the setback, they came back.
38:20He got it right today.
38:21Wan-Bissaka got it right.
38:23He was brilliant going forwards in the first half.
38:26And then they came out clearly after that second goal and said,
38:29we're going to shut up shop.
38:30We're going to sit tight.
38:31They had a really good afternoon.
38:33Wan-Bissaka had a really good afternoon.
38:35And you kind of called for that on Match of the Day last week, really.
38:39You said that that front four will deliver as long as what's behind them does their share of it.
38:46Yeah, you've got to share the load for both ways.
38:49And there's certainly talent there, you know, and confidence is a huge thing.
38:53Game to game, in terms of form, can be a big thing.
38:56But as a player, you can never lose that belief and that confidence deep within yourself.
39:01And they've certainly got talent within that group.
39:03And they deserved it today.
39:04I thought they were all fantastic.
39:05And they've created enough to win the game by far.
39:08Rob mentioned Freddie Potts making his first Premier League start for West Ham today.
39:1422 years old.
39:16In the position that you played during your career for the majority of the time,
39:22what impressed you about him this afternoon?
39:25He was a massive plus for West Ham.
39:26I mean, there was a lot of positives today.
39:28But he was a massive plus.
39:30I think the biggest thing for me was how he just fit in and played his position with real understanding.
39:36And he's playing in a team with a lot of attacking players today.
39:38And he played his position against a strong midfield of Newcastle's three.
39:42And they're very athletic, as strong as you get in the Premier League.
39:45And he had a real understanding of when to press, when to cover.
39:47And he was doing two jobs.
39:49And he was jumping at times to Tonali or Bruno.
39:51And he was back tackling and blocking passes into Valtemada.
39:55Seems quite simple, but it's fantastic.
39:58He never really looked flustered.
39:59He never looked out of position.
40:00He never really looked like he was chasing.
40:02I like this one because he has a little look over his shoulder.
40:04He thinks, do I need to get to Tonali and pass the referee?
40:08Realises it's not going there.
40:09Holds his position and just reads the game really, really well.
40:14Regains it.
40:15Starts another attack.
40:16And before you know it, two passes later and they're on the attack.
40:18And they end up getting into the 18-yard box.
40:21And I just thought it was a real disciplined, mature performance.
40:23Again, he was dictating things.
40:24He looked like he had a real presence about him in there.
40:27Never really looked flustered.
40:29Again, a regain.
40:30Forward pass.
40:31One touch.
40:31I love the way he was forward on one touch.
40:34Boom.
40:34Outside of the right foot.
40:35And at times, he didn't have to get forward too much.
40:37But when he did, lovely little pass to Wan-Bissaka down the side.
40:40Showed that side to his game.
40:42And on another day, he might have had a goal.
40:44You know, he makes the box very unfortunate.
40:47It's a great finish.
40:48He got himself right in there.
40:50And if Suchek had maybe a size seven on instead of a size nine and a half, he might have got himself the goal.
40:56And he deserved it.
40:57He'd done a bit of everything today for West Ham.
41:00In a real tough game to come into, he just done his job fantastically well.
41:06Kept calm.
41:06Kept composed.
41:07Was all over the pitch.
41:08Done a bit of everything.
41:10Yeah.
41:11He's had a really good day.
41:12Really good day.
41:13Well, a dream's come true for him.
41:15Well, yeah.
41:16And you're looking at someone, he'll be sat at home now with his dad, watching this and being praised by Michael Crarrick, thinking this was brilliant.
41:24And on top of that, you're looking at it saying, where they struggled, Suchek and Irving in midfield as a defensive two, haven't been able to do it for West Ham.
41:32He did it as a one.
41:33And it was against three really good midfielders in Newcastle.
41:38Yeah, it was.
41:39Honestly, I think you can't underestimate coming into that environment in a game of that stature.
41:44To come in and just be himself.
41:47He looked like he was just himself and he coped with it ever so well.
41:49I was massively impressed with him.
41:51Do you think that's, you know, your experience as a young player, your experience coaching young players.
41:56Is it sink or swim in that situation?
42:01I think, yeah.
42:01Coming into the situation that he's coming into with where the club are.
42:04I think there's almost two ways.
42:06I think as a young player, you can come in and it's too much for you and a little bit naive and it's a bit fresh and it's a bit, it's a tough environment to come into today.
42:15Going to go down as well early on at home.
42:17It can be a little bit, this is too much and you get caught out.
42:20Or you can actually play with that freedom because it's your big chance.
42:24You know, you just said it.
42:26It's a dream day for him and he just played like himself.
42:29No scarring of previous results really.
42:32You know, he's not responsible for that.
42:34And he played with that freedom.
42:36It was great to see.
42:37You know, he deserves all the credit because it was a fantastic performance from the lad.
42:40Take your opportunity.
42:42You've been given an opportunity when a team's been struggling.
42:44We've touched on it before.
42:45You're saying, you're looking around, the guys on the bench, the youngsters are sat there going, give me a chance.
42:50He's grabbed that chance.
42:51And you played alongside his dad, didn't you?
42:54On my debut, yeah.
42:55Yeah, mate, your debut was with his dad.
42:58So we'll move on from you feeling really old to on to the next thing.
43:01Just your goalkeeping insight on Nick, we had a chat in the office about this, it's really interesting,
43:06on just the slightest margins of error that can cost a goalkeeper.
43:11Well, let's get first things right.
43:13The ball moves.
43:14I know you love that one, chap.
43:15The ball dips a lot.
43:17But there is certain habits that Nick Pope has that doesn't help it when it does move and does dip that really he ends up falling short.
43:26He's such a big guy that when he comes to move into a dive, he cuts his right leg rather than driving through his right leg.
43:34Now, this is a habit that a lot of goalkeepers have.
43:38He manages to do it because he is so big.
43:40He covers so much of the goal.
43:41But when we look at the strike, when you look at the movement, if you look at his right foot of Nick Pope, and he came into criticism for this, but pretty much every goalkeeper does this, and it's so hard to cut out.
43:52You see his right leg cut, and he ends up diving up and down rather than across and pushing through his right leg.
44:00And from there, his hand, his left hand comes out over in front of him, and his hands get in between his eyes and the ball.
44:08So when it starts to dip, and it does dip, chappers.
44:11When it starts to dip, his hands have to go down, but that fraction of a second delays him, and rather than being out and down and through the ball, it's down, it's out and down over the ball.
44:25And that fraction of a detail, just because of the movement of the leg, the way his body then moves, really, it didn't help him in that motion.
44:33Is it, very quickly, is it instinct that your leg goes that way before...
44:38Yeah, if you had a running race and everyone's starting on the start line, and you didn't know when you were starting, you said go, your instinct would be to step backwards, to go forwards.
44:46To dive, to cut out that instinct, is so hard to go the wrong way, essentially.
44:52It's counterintuitive, but it is so very difficult to cut out.
44:56Well, plenty more reaction and debate on all the weekend's big talking points on the Monday Nightclub on 5 Live.
45:03Tomorrow, Michael McIntyre is on Wayne Rooney's show, available from 6am tomorrow on Sound.
45:10The best from the WSL is on the Women's Football Show, that's next on BBC One.
45:15Champions League returns on Wednesday, commentaries on 5 Live.
45:18All the goals on the iPlayer from 10, the best of the action from 10.40 on BBC One.
45:25We'll talk Vitor Pereira's sacking and reveal the results at Goal of the Month shortly after all of yesterday's goals.
45:36Confusion, and Arsenal capitalise Victor Jokerez.
45:42Trossard, for Rice.
45:45Rapid-fire Arsenal to put themselves 2-0 in front.
45:49Oh, what's he done, Mimmy Martinez?
45:56Mohamed Salah rolls in his 250th Liverpool goal.
46:02McAllister into Gravenberg.
46:04Here's an opportunity, Gravenberg, 2-0.
46:06It's happened again to Nottingham Forest, and Casimiro scored again.
46:18Yates, trying to set himself before chipping in.
46:21Gibbs-White's header goes in.
46:23Oh, that was pinpoint stuff.
46:27Loops up towards Igor Jesus, and it breaks here for the chance that is taken by Nicola Savona.
46:33Sells to try and fight through the crowd.
46:36He couldn't.
46:36Dorgou had a swipe and missed.
46:38Amat has a swipe and scores.
46:42Spectacularly.
46:42They've made another mistake here.
46:50Tottenham-Cosedo's through.
46:51Must be this time, Jean-Petro.
46:53And is.
46:54And Chelsea are ahead.
46:58Lovely little play into Max Wigbaugh.
47:01Here's a chance.
47:02There's a goal.
47:03And it's Danny Welbeck once again.
47:05And Cuba Minta, searing burst of pace.
47:10There's a chance at a second goal.
47:12Diego Gomez.
47:14It's Jorginho Ruta.
47:16And still...
47:18It's goal number three.
47:20Gomez hit the double.
47:25Got it in towards Mateta.
47:28And he's off and running this afternoon.
47:32Jefferson Lerma with the long throw.
47:34Off ahead of Collins and in.
47:37And Palace double their lead.
47:41Now Raul Jimenez again.
47:45And Fulham have the goal from Sassignon.
47:50Movement from Josh King.
47:52Akkadu, as he caught him, he has.
47:55The Wolves centre-half is sent off.
47:59Sanderberga.
48:00And beautifully dispatched by Harry Wilson.
48:07It won't be with support from Sassignon.
48:10It's 3-0.
48:12Now there are Wolves fans shouting to Vitor Pereira that you are getting sacked in the morning.
48:16And he was sacked around lunchtime today.
48:23They're the only team in the top seven tiers of English football without a league win.
48:29And the other key thing, I think, here, Michael, is they've lost to all three promoted sides this season already.
48:35Yeah, it's obviously been a really tough start.
48:39I think they had a tough start last season and they've had a tough start again.
48:42And it's hugely unfortunate, you know, to see head coaches or managers lose their jobs so early in the season.
48:52But ultimately, you know, the start they've had is probably not good enough for where they want to be.
48:58I think it was indicative yesterday how Fulham went out.
49:01Marco Silva, how he talked about the game.
49:03And he said, go out and win.
49:05That's all you've got to do to his team.
49:07Just go out, perform and be ruthless.
49:10And that, I think, sends a signal that, realistically, our teams are looking at them saying, we know we're going to win against you.
49:17We know we've got three points.
49:19Look, within the modern structure now, not everything falls on a head coach or a manager, as you will be well aware from your time at Middlesbrough.
49:29But if you look at the players that have gone from Wolves since 2023, it does highlight, Michael, how difficult it is for any.
49:39I mean, they have lost more than a whole team of stars.
49:44Yeah, it's always difficult.
49:45You know, you look at that selection of players there and effectively a team of players and it's, I tell you what, there's some quality there.
49:52Isn't there?
49:53Yeah, there's some quality there.
49:54It's incredible, the drip, drip, drip effect of it, that you're replacing players who aren't established Premier League players, who haven't got that quality.
50:03And the fans aren't stupid there.
50:04They've been calling for the board for a lot longer than Pereira.
50:08So it's something that's obviously clear and obvious to everyone who's been around Wolves, looking at Wolves, to say, this has been coming for years in the making.
50:20But it's other things there as well, though, Rob, isn't there?
50:22I mean, you look at the centre-halves, I mean, you look at every position and you think, blimey, you've lost quality players there.
50:27The last three summers, they've sold their captain every summer.
50:32People might look at Brighton and go, well, Brighton sell players.
50:34But Brighton's philosophy seems to be sell one big player a summer.
50:39You know, Wolves this summer lost eight nori and Cunha and Semedo.
50:45That's a lot to lose.
50:46Yeah, and you look at it and you look beyond the manager then.
50:50You're looking at the planning of the club, the organisation, the structure, and it just doesn't feel like they've got that right for quite a while now.
50:58And you look back to the investment that they put in such a long time to get to the Premier League and be established.
51:05And the organisation and the effort that that put in hasn't been matched in the last three years, clearly.
51:12Right, here's the difficult bit, because obviously you're being linked with it.
51:16I'm not going to ask you direct, because you're obviously not going to give me an answer one way or the other.
51:20Are you looking to get back in? Where are you at, at the moment?
51:24You're trying to get rid of me, are you?
51:25No, no, no. Do you know what? That's the last thing I want.
51:28But normally, managers who come and work for us soon leave after working with us on two shows.
51:33So I'm definitely not trying to get rid of you.
51:36No, I'm enjoying some time out at the moment.
51:38I think I'm probably watching as much football now as I've ever watched, really, with a free eye and kind of nothing on it.
51:45So I'm still learning, still trying to improve from that side of things.
51:50But I'm enjoying doing things like this, you know, and it's a change and spending time with the family and see what's next.
51:56I'm available.
51:59I think this evening, Gary O'Neill is the favourite to go back in.
52:05But after you've said that, I'll see where you are in the odds a little bit later on.
52:10Here's how the Premier League table looks after 10 games.
52:14Manchester City's rise to second and they close the gap on Arsenal to six.
52:19Bournemouth drop to four.
52:21West Ham's first league win at home since February means they're just three points from safety.
52:27Newcastle have gone eight top flight away matches without a victory and stay 13.
52:32Here's Goldenham.
52:35In reverse order, in third place is Caicedo with 16%.
52:52In second place, Voltamada with 17% and the winner of October's goal of the month, Buendia, with 21% of the vote.
53:04And this is probably pass of the season.
53:05Guides it back to Cash.
53:15Lovely idea of what a touch from Luca Dina to bring it down.
53:18All of a sudden, they might be in business here.
53:21Oh, here they are!
53:22Emi Buendia!
53:26A scorcher from Emi Buendia!
53:29Thank you, Rob.
53:34Thank you, Michael.
53:35We want you both back.
53:36That's it.
53:37Two for Haaland today, but also one for O'Reilly that means City are anything but faulty.
53:43One for the older viewer, that.
53:45Good night.
53:45Good night.
