00:00What a freak!
00:01Oh, look at that!
00:02Oh, look at that!
00:03Absolutely phenomenal!
00:04Rooney Oco!
00:05Welcome to Match of the Dead.
00:30MUSIC PLAYS
00:50Evening, four games to show you from the first Saturday of 2026,
00:54and unlike New Year's Day, no nil-nils and plenty of goals.
00:58One of England's best centre-forwards is in the studio alongside Alan.
01:02First, Wolves still winless,
01:04but looking to build on their draw at Old Trafford in midweek
01:07against a West Ham side who began the day four points from safety
01:11and without winning their last eight.
01:12Commentary from Alistair Mann.
01:16It was the 8th of November when West Ham last won a match,
01:20and though Wolves haven't gathered a three-pointer since April,
01:24their increasingly hopeless position
01:26has actually begun to relieve the tension.
01:29Rob Edwards' assertion that recent displays at Anfield and Old Trafford
01:33were promising is backed by him making just one change
01:37from the draw with Manchester United,
01:39Santiago Bueno returning from injury.
01:42With just nine goals in their nine away games this season,
01:46West Ham's travels have offered little encouragement.
01:49Captain Jarrod Bowen continues to look their brighter spark,
01:54particularly today as he scored more career goals against Wolves
01:58than any other opponent.
02:00His importance now even greater given Lucas Paquetá has been ruled out with injury.
02:05Well, following the news of the sad passing of former Wolves winger Terry Wharton
02:12who died at the age of 83 following a short illness,
02:15two sets of players will now pause for a moment's reflection.
02:20There's been a feeling in these parts that this is a game in which the pressure is all on the visitors.
02:39Wolves increasingly desperate plight.
02:43They seem now resigned to their fate for West Ham.
02:48It is a must-win fixture.
02:51West Ham have already won the ball back through Somerville.
02:54He kept it in play as well.
02:56There are options as well.
02:58Potts is one of them.
02:59Well, he was clipped I think.
03:01Tried to stay on his feet which was the honest thing to do.
03:06Well, he could easily have gone down and won a penalty there.
03:10But it was quickly dismissed.
03:15Nicely done by Mane.
03:18An exciting protégé.
03:20And it goes to Huang.
03:22Huang's ball across and Wolves in front.
03:29Less than four minutes and Arias scores his first goal as a Wolverhampton Wanderers player.
03:36There are some times, as a commentator,
03:38you're reluctant to point out how long it's been since there's been a goalless draw.
03:43But you never expected this to end 0-0.
03:46And within four minutes that particular prospect is over.
03:52He's inherited a team who've had real problems expressing themselves this season.
03:57Defensively, they have been frail.
04:02Here he is again, Mane, and now Hugo Bueno.
04:08Clearance as far as Mane, who goes down and wins the penalty.
04:15Magassa says no way.
04:17Peter Bank says definitely.
04:19And Magassa went for the ball.
04:21And Peter Bank says he got the man and not the ball.
04:25And awards Wolves a penalty.
04:28So Huang with an opportunity to give Wolves a 2-0 lead.
04:36An opportunity he takes.
04:38And the explosion of noise around Molyneux is to herald a potentially winning position.
04:44For the Wolves, number 11.
04:473, 2, 1.
04:49Well, it was April 26th the last time that Wolves celebrated a victory in the Premier League.
04:57Huang's penalty right down the middle.
05:00Areola moving out of the way.
05:03But Wolves in uncharted waters this season.
05:06They lead 2-0.
05:10Walker-Peters.
05:13And that's headed straight to Mane.
05:16He doesn't need asking twice to have a go.
05:20Full of confidence.
05:22Brings in Chatua.
05:27Trying to get round Scars, he's done it.
05:29Dangerous ball in and he wins a corner.
05:44Headed away by Kilman.
05:46João Gomez.
05:48Clip ball in.
05:50A brilliant save by Areola.
05:52Wow, that is sensational.
05:55He had no right to get anywhere near that.
05:57And he's helped it over his crossbar with his foot.
06:02You go a long way before you see a save better than that one.
06:07That just looked like it had to be a goal.
06:13Here's Hugo Boyne up.
06:19Mane's onside, no question of that.
06:22And he has a goal!
06:24And it's three!
06:25They're so excited about him in these parts, Matthias Mane.
06:35He's been given licence to have a go when he gets the ball.
06:40And he now scores for the first time as a Wolverhampton Wanderers first-team player.
06:45No question of offside.
06:46And Mane thought, well, why not?
06:50And it was a stunning strike.
06:53He's a player with so much promise.
06:56Outstanding at Old Trafford on Tuesday.
06:59And now he has his first professional goal.
07:03And it will not be the last on the evidence of what we've seen so far from him.
07:07And Wolves extraordinarily lead 3-0!
07:14Well, a penny for your thoughts.
07:17More like a million pounds.
07:18Nuno has made his changes, changed the formation.
07:25Mayers has gone in as the third centre-half.
07:27Saucek up towards Somerville.
07:35Probably looked as lively as anyone for West Ham.
07:38That's a good attempt from Bowen.
07:40Got underneath it and skied it, but at least it will go down as a chance.
07:45Well, they've not seen their team win away from home since August 31st.
07:53Ironically, that was at Nottingham Forest under the management of Nuno Espirito Santo.
08:00Andre in front of Bowen.
08:03Hugo Bueno.
08:05Still going.
08:07It's a good effort and Areola puts it beyond the post.
08:10Well, he's a player who has certainly benefited after Ryan Knight.
08:16Norrie left for Manchester City.
08:18Working it onto his right foot.
08:20And Areola's save was important.
08:25Wilson.
08:28With Mane for company.
08:31And he wins a corner.
08:35Fifth West Ham corner, they're fourth of the second half.
08:39Great delivery.
08:43Good punch by Jose Sartre.
08:45Well, just at the moment, VAR are still checking for a potential foul.
08:51Krejci on the back of Saucek.
08:55Well, Saucek was asking the question.
08:58Nothing given.
09:00Andre.
09:05Cleared, but only as far as Mane.
09:11Well, he's done that well.
09:13It's a great save again from Areola.
09:15Well, he's box office, isn't he, Mane?
09:17Just such an exciting prospect.
09:21He scores his first ever professional goal.
09:24And it gives him the confidence to try and grab his second.
09:27Well, the damage was inflicted in the first half.
09:41But it was some serious damage to West Ham United.
09:44Wolves finally taste a victory.
09:49Rob Edwards first in charge of Molyneux.
09:53And as much as Wolves are delighted,
09:56West Ham will be feeling desperate.
09:59A terrible afternoon for the visitors.
10:02A wonderful one for the hosts.
10:04The final score, Wolves three, West Ham United nil.
10:10The overall performance, I thought we were good.
10:13Resilient when we needed to be, compact when we needed to be.
10:16But, yeah, stuck together in place from really good football at the right moments as well.
10:21So I thought it was a pretty complete performance.
10:23Has it been difficult to convince them to buy into what's going on?
10:26No, because I don't think, if you watch the performances,
10:28I don't think the lads have struggled to buy in at all.
10:30I think they've been all in.
10:31And you're seeing that, we're seeing that.
10:34So a big credit to the lads and a huge credit to the supporters.
10:38That's for them today because they've had it really, really tough.
10:40Has this been the lowest point so far since you took over, would you say?
10:44Yes, yes.
10:45Especially the first half was really disappointed, was embarrassing.
10:50And I should apologise to our fans, those that travel, those at home.
10:55This is not what we want to show them.
10:58We have problems in terms of squad, in terms of options.
11:03But that doesn't, is not a justification for what we did in the first half.
11:08The mistakes that we made, the lack of effort, discipline, organisation, responsibility, was very bad.
11:16Tell us about the feeling when you get the ball and you think, you know what, I'm going to have a crack here.
11:22Yeah, I saw John Henry say on the edge, but I thought, let me get a chance, let me shoot.
11:26And it went in and I was buzzing, buzzing to get my first goal.
11:30A moment you dream of, but did it feel even better in reality?
11:33Yes, 100%.
11:34When I saw it going, I just ran to the corner and did a nice knee slide and celebrated with the team and the fans.
11:39Can't help but smile, can you?
11:42His performance and just listening to him and there's only one place to start and that's for him.
11:46It's no coincidence that Wolves have certainly improved in the last three games and the three games are the ones that he's started.
11:54Liverpool, Man United and obviously today and everything was about him today.
12:00He brought an energy, he was brave on the ball, he was the best player on the park by a mile.
12:06He constantly did that, he just played with such confidence for someone so young.
12:12He played a huge part in that first goal.
12:17Little give, little go and he doesn't stop, look around the corner and he follows his ball.
12:22And we will talk about West Ham and how weak they were today, but they just couldn't handle him.
12:27He was too quick for them there, he gets the penalty, of course they score the penalty.
12:33And the same thing again, look, he's the wrong side.
12:36Then goes, takes the ball with the left foot and hits it with the right foot.
12:39Great skill to do there from him.
12:43Doing his bit defensively, which he had to do, more so second half when West Ham changed it a little bit.
12:51But he was more than prepared to do that.
12:54And, look at this little...
12:56This is brilliant, isn't it?
12:57The little flick through, there you go, see you later to Bowen and Fernandes.
13:02And that's a decent save there.
13:04And to get his first goal, it'll be a day he will never, ever forget.
13:10And so he shouldn't, because he's given something different to Wolves.
13:14And as I said, they've been better, far better when he's been in the team.
13:18And you can see that today, since he's been in the team.
13:21Look, all of a sudden, total shots, shots on target, fouls won.
13:26So, yeah, it looks very, very promising for him.
13:29He started off as a kid at Rochdale and Wolves brought him into their academy.
13:33And you talked to people around Wolves, so one of the things that they're impressed with him
13:39is that he's performing for the first team in the same way that he performs for the under-21s.
13:45He's sticking true to what he does.
13:47Is that, from your experience with academy coaching, is that unusual?
13:51Sometimes it is. I think you need a football personality.
13:54Obviously, you're dealing with different characters, but I think for this young man,
13:58who's a masterclass in terms of how he played, his desire,
14:00it looked like he's been there for years.
14:04And a lot of occasions, you get young players, like you said,
14:06they're in the under-18s or the 21s and they're the best player.
14:09All of a sudden, they go over to the first team and their games change a little bit.
14:13But, I mean, if he can excite us like the other Mane that we had in the Premier League,
14:18then it would be amazing. But what a performance.
14:21When you realise the pressure that Wolves are under,
14:24then you look at him today and just the way he played,
14:26and he played with such freedom. It was great to watch.
14:28Off the back of Anfield and Old Trafford as his first two.
14:34So, for all of that, and that's brilliant for Wolves,
14:36and what a boost that will give them.
14:39West Ham, on the other hand,
14:41what adjective would you use to describe West Ham?
14:44Well, I'll give you three or four. You can choose whatever you want.
14:47Weak, woeful, pathetic, useless.
14:50All of those things, particularly in the first half.
14:53I mean, I can't remember such a poor performance from a team in the first half.
14:57All over the park, not just in midfield.
14:59You can see the three midfielders there.
15:01Yes, that's great skill.
15:03Potts has got to come over.
15:05Fernandes has got to track the runner.
15:07Comes over, but there's no such effort to get back into the box.
15:10And all of a sudden, it's too late, you're punished.
15:12That was a constant today.
15:14Not following runners.
15:15Not prepared to win tackles.
15:17Not prepared to roll your sleeves up.
15:19Bwemo can run 30 or 40 yards up the pitch there, and there's no one within 10 yards of him.
15:24It's like, how do you want it?
15:26How easy do you want it?
15:27How free do you want to be?
15:29Take your time, put your ball into the box, of which they did.
15:33And they really just couldn't handle what Wolves were chucking at them.
15:38Magasa and Potts, same thing again.
15:40They don't win the tackle there.
15:42How many times that happened?
15:44Particularly in that first half, we lost count of it.
15:47Ball into the box again.
15:49Mane, who we've spoken about, who was brilliant, is free.
15:54The ball eventually falls to him, and he gets his penalty.
15:57Too late.
15:58It's weak.
15:59Same thing again.
16:01Jao Gomez, just have a look at this.
16:03Look at how, and there's just no desire to close down.
16:07He takes three touches before he puts the ball into the box.
16:10But for a wonderful save, that's another goal there.
16:13You've got Fernandes and Magasa again into the midfield.
16:19I mean, this is just, it's unbelievable this is.
16:23It's great skill, absolutely.
16:25But if you just have a look at, I don't know how to describe it,
16:29without swearing.
16:31Go on, swear.
16:32It's like, no, but just have a look at Mavropanis.
16:35If that's the best you can do in closing down,
16:38a defender turning your back, not preparing to put your foot in,
16:42when your team's in danger of being relegated.
16:44Seriously, you cannot allow that to happen.
16:47You have to do better than that.
16:49And that's why the manager was that angry at full time,
16:52because of performances and incidents like that.
16:54And you look at the comparison to what West Ham are like under Graham Potter
16:58and to where they are under Nuno,
17:00and actually the numbers are worse under Nuno than they were under Graham Potter.
17:04But, I mean, they're depressing whichever way you look at them,
17:07whichever coach you look at them.
17:09Which highlights really, Jermaine, what West Ham are like.
17:11This is deeper than who their head coach is.
17:13Yeah, because under Graham Potter, it was disappointing.
17:17The performances, the results weren't there.
17:19And obviously Nuno come in.
17:20I think naturally when a new manager comes in, you're going to get a reaction.
17:22I think that happens from the players.
17:24But since then, nothing's really happened, to be honest.
17:27I mean, the performances and...
17:29Players go into games and they work hard, but competing is different.
17:33You know, working hard and competing is completely different.
17:35And when you see the goal there, especially the Marnie one, you know,
17:37you have to...
17:38There's different phases of the game.
17:39When the ball goes wide, you're defending the box.
17:41As soon as it comes into the middle, you're defending the goal.
17:43And when you're seeing players shoot from the edge of the box
17:46and your defenders are not engaging or making contact,
17:49it's worrying for the manager and it's worrying for West Ham.
17:51What I would also say quickly is that the players and the manager
17:55have to accept the criticism that they're getting this season
17:58and particularly today.
17:59But what I also say is the money that West Ham have spent,
18:02the recruitment needs a good, hard, long look at as well
18:05because it hasn't been anywhere near good enough.
18:07OK. Arsenal began the day four points clear when they travelled to Bournemouth,
18:12who'd gone ten matches without a victory.
18:14Commentary on this one from Mark Scott.
18:16Bournemouth were responsible for half of Arsenal's
18:21four league losses last season.
18:23But you'd get long odds on them doing damage
18:26to the Gunners' title chances today.
18:29With that ten-game winless run,
18:31their worst under Antony Iraiola.
18:34Iraiola goes with the same side that started the draw at Chelsea.
18:38So Antoine Semenyo starts for the Cherries once again,
18:42despite Manchester City closing in on a deal for the Gunners.
18:45Mikel Arteta switches his side up by three.
18:49Declan Rice returns after missing the Villa game with a knee injury,
18:53while Noni Madweke and Gabriel Martinelli come in out wide.
18:57It's only Madweke's second start in the last 14 league games.
19:01Marino Trossa and Saka all move to the bench.
19:04Havertz misses out altogether as he's eased back in after that long layoff.
19:09This is the sixth time that Arsenal have topped the Premier League table by the end of New Year's Day.
19:17And on all five previous occasions they've failed to win the title.
19:22One more. Timba.
19:28Madweke.
19:31Good stuff by Noni Madweke!
19:34The run was excellent, the finish was poor.
19:37Still looking for his first Premier League goal for Arsenal, Noni Madweke.
19:42And he made real headway to get into a handy position.
19:46But then the accuracy was lacking with the hit.
19:49His side won a four-game winning run in the league for the second time this season.
19:55They didn't manage more than three in a row last season.
19:58Oh dearie me, given straight to Emma Nielsen!
20:05A horrific error!
20:06Has gifted Bournemouth the opening goal!
20:08And it was a chance gobbled up by Emma Nielsen!
20:10a horrific error has gifted Bournemouth the opening goal and it was a chance gobbled up by
20:19Emma Nielsen, Gabriel with an absolute nightmare here and Arsenal who we've got used to seeing
20:28being so watertight at the back with one of the biggest gaps you will see all season and
20:35Bournemouth are in front against the league leaders
20:42and forwards towards Brooks, Timber underneath it
20:47Tavernier, Cliburn opens up, not far away, I think Raya was hoping rather than expecting it to go wide
21:01Go back a long way, Mikel Arteta and Antoni Iraiola with the pair having played together for a youth team in the Basque country
21:10Zubimendi is a bit too robust from Alex Jimenez hoping to do some damage at the other end now Gabriel after that error that led to the opener
21:30Delivered by Teklum Rice and Petrovic is done with it to a certain extent
21:37Madweke
21:39Madweke
21:39Don't forget Semenyo and away from Semenyo and still going and across
21:45and blocked but in
21:48Arsenal level and it is Gabriel who makes amends for his ghastly error by blasting Arsenal level
21:56Madweke was really positive here, absolutely did Semenyo
22:01and then cut it back looking for a teammate to get on the end of it
22:05Martinelli had the first pop which was blocked
22:08but Gabriel made no mistake when the ball broke his way
22:12a speedy response from the league leaders
22:18Bournemouth 1, Arsenal 1
22:20and what a start to the game
22:29here's Alex Scott
22:31Sinesi
22:35Jimenez
22:37Hill
22:45good ball and a good chance that Tavernier can't take
22:51no one picked up the run of Tavernier who couldn't quite manoeuvre the correct angle to find the net
22:57Super Mendy to Jokeres and Rice couldn't give it back to the Swede
23:07nice from Tavernier
23:10he lets himself down with the pass
23:13he's giving away possession chiefly again though
23:18Kluivert, danger us all! Tavernier should have done better
23:24but he couldn't get the correct touch on it
23:31Semenyo, lovely first touch
23:33Alexiano!
23:41still Semenyo, Evan Nielsen
23:43Semenyo!
23:44that's a tricky chance
23:47ball coming towards him and the first time scoop
23:51had too much height on it
23:53Nessi's header
24:00finds its way to Truffert
24:02and Evan Nielsen striked out
24:04free kick taken quickly
24:09they could be in here with Brooks
24:12Brooks!
24:13Dozie from Arsenal
24:16but it was such a tough angle for David Brooks to try and find the net with
24:23switched off here didn't they?
24:25Brooks might have been offside but
24:28no need for VAR to get involved as he wasn't able to get it inside the post
24:31Seneci ahead of Jokerez there
24:43Martinelli, Jokerez got the wrong side of his man
24:47Seneci struggling to recover, Odegaard now, Rice! Brilliant!
24:52absolutely clinical from Declan Rice
24:57and the league leaders have turned it around
25:03he's come in for a bit of stick
25:05for not making much of an impact this season Victor Jokerez
25:08but he was the man that started it all for Arsenal here
25:12causing a bit of panic inside the penalty area
25:15Odegaard saw Declan Rice and he saw exactly where he wanted to put the ball
25:20and caressed it beyond Petrovic and in
25:26first time stroke in is gorgeous from Declan Rice
25:30he scored in the loss to Bournemouth in May
25:34but has put Arsenal in front against the Cherries today
25:38to the delight of his manager
25:46Saka
25:47Timbal
25:54here's Bukayo Saka
25:56Rice
25:57game over now you feel
25:59Declan Rice at the double for Arsenal
26:06sealed with a kiss
26:08and surely the goal that seals the win
26:11Saka with the intelligent run
26:13Rice peeled back
26:15Saka found him perfectly
26:17and you never really doubted Declan Rice
26:20when he went for another first time hit
26:24Bournemouth 1 Arsenal 3
26:26Bournemouth might feel a bit hard done by at the current scoreline
26:29they've had their chances and they've been more than a match for Arsenal
26:33Taman here
26:36Cooke
26:42opens up for the hit, here, ohhhhhhh
26:44what a hit too from Kruppi
26:45and Bournemouth are back in business
26:48Junior Kruppi with a cracker
26:53beyond David Raya
26:55to move Bournemouth back to an inner goal
26:59well that is the definition of an impact sub
27:03and what an impact he had on the ball here
27:05a ripper beyond Raya
27:07little hope keeping that one out
27:09and it's Bournemouth 2
27:11Arsenal 3
27:13Sinesi pumped in
27:16Salivas underneath it
27:18he has a swing
27:19and it comes off
27:20Jurien Timber
27:21for a throw for Bournemouth
27:25Antoine Semenyo will hurl this in
27:28what could be one of his final appearances for the club
27:31could he help out his potential new employers
27:35by helping Bournemouth take points off Arsenal
27:38Semenyo's throw
27:40keepers up there
27:41New Year
27:45same outcome for Arsenal
27:47Mikel Arteta's men make it five wins in a row
27:52Bournemouth unhappy with the referee
27:54they felt there was still time left for them to try and do something
27:58but they fall just short
28:00against the league leaders
28:01who have shown grit and determination
28:04to recover from that dreadful start
28:07to win here
28:08by three goals to two
28:10today we conceded three goals
28:13against Arsenal
28:15and they haven't really had a lot of chances
28:17you know
28:18you can concede three goals because they are putting a lot of pressure on you
28:21they have I don't know 25 shots and your keeper saves and
28:25but I haven't felt like a game where we should be conceding three goals
28:29big praise to them because the team that creates so many questions and
28:33and difficulties to you in everything that we do because they do it really well
28:38and on top of that we put ourselves into a very difficult position in the
28:41manner that you concede the goal and then is a big mountain to climb but I
28:46think the team showed a lot of maturity what Gabby's done after that mistake is
28:50remarkable and then the team slowly grow started to control and dominate the
28:55game much better scored two very great goals
28:58were you hoping for the hat-trick when you've previously been looking for two
29:01I actually was I was thinking one more cut back to me please
29:04but another chance didn't arise
29:06and Bournemouth for the last 15 minutes played really well you know they shut that space off
29:11so I was guided to not get the hat-trick
29:13but I'll keep trying maybe one day that might come
29:16well if he keeps adding the goals Jermaine he becomes even more the complete midfielder doesn't he
29:21unbelievable you know 296 games and you know the first time he's got two goals in a Premier League game
29:27but it's I mean what a performance you know I think when you look at the the modern-day midfielder
29:32you know where I mean that he does everything you see here you know he's just an energy level just to get you up the pitch
29:37I remember Declan speaking a few years back to you and he sort of like modelled his game on Yaya Torre
29:41and that was sort of like Yaya Torre like you know just getting you up the pitch unfortunately didn't get the free kick there
29:45but even here you know he's always sort of like he knows what's around him that sort of like pitch geography
29:50you know he comes away from the pressure and you see here just that the change of speed there
29:53to caress it in the corner you know you know his body position his shoulder where he's relaxed his shoulders
29:58and you know good contact into the corner here you know just again the other side of the game you know
30:03can you out of possession can you be you know effective and then stop those sort of like balls into the frontman
30:08you know you see him scanning there I think that's Clivert you know he stops the passes going forward
30:12and then you know he doesn't he doesn't stop there you know onto the second balls wins that
30:16you know just everything he did again you know just arriving into the box at the right time we spoke about you know
30:21if he can add goals to his game you know he becomes even a better player
30:24and the detail there just the scanning just to see where he's at and again the change of speed
30:28and sometimes people talk about in the box you know moving and getting to those areas
30:31but sometimes actually standing still you know and then when it comes then you've got executing that
30:34so you know that was his second goal here again you know just sensing the danger
30:39you know Lewis Cook there just stuck on his heels and that but again getting it
30:42um here again you know making contact not just sort of like getting close and not making
30:46combat actually making contact winning a ball back for his team
30:48um you know he's fantastic energy levels and again scanning there so important it's just to
30:53know where you're at um again just you know heads it around the corner he makes it look so easy
30:57um he does exactly what the game told you to do you know he plays one touch he plays two touch
31:01you know he drives forward you know he got his two goals and I just felt that the performance was
31:06brilliant and you know if Arsenal are going to go on to win this title
31:09you know he's pivoting yeah I mean he he must be the perfect player for any manager
31:15it's a manager's dream he's a manager's dream he really is I mean his attitude is uh is is amazing
31:20he very rarely misses games and when he's out there he's a regular eight out of ten so he's been
31:27incredible so he said that to you did he about Yaya Toure that's what I remember watching it and he
31:31actually said that you know he he watched Yaya Toure's game and the way Yaya Toure is to get the
31:35teams out of pitch and you know drive through midfield and he's and he's got that I think the only
31:38thing that now is it's probably adding a little bit more goals to his game and he can you know
31:41when he arrives on the edge of the box he makes good contact he's a good finisher
31:44Bournemouth are great to watch going forward that their problem this season has been defensively when
31:50when you look at the stats their numbers are way down which is maybe to be expected Jermaine I suppose
31:56given given the number of defenders they lost in the summer and the goalkeeper yeah well it's not
32:00just the thing I mean it's 10 players and I think when you look at that you know last season you know at
32:04this stage of the sea you know seventh now 15th and you talk about you know when you concede you
32:09know that many goals you know you don't give yourself a chance to win games and it's they're a
32:15funny team to watch Bournemouth because some of the performance is actually good you know they play the
32:18right way they've got good players they have a go but you know if you if you can't concede if you
32:24start conceding goals you know it's so difficult to win games you think they'll be all right there
32:28I think they'll be all right yeah I think they'll have enough up top when they'll get enough
32:31goals I think to be all right yeah okay six games on tomorrow's match of the day
32:36and nodded in by Craig
32:43bye
32:45a lot right
32:49seven
32:52this week
32:55that's a long also
32:59It's it in.
33:01Macheta!
33:04And nodded in by Grae.
33:06Lovely ball.
33:08A deep ball!
33:10Driven in.
33:12Shek is scored.
33:13And Enzo Fernandes worked the space very well.
33:20Five Lives Premier League Sunday will cover it all on air from midday.
33:23You get a choice of commentaries at three o'clock.
33:25All of them can be found on BBC Sounds.
33:27Manchester City-Chelsea is then at 5.30.
33:30Ski Sunday returns for a new series on BBC Two and iPlayer from 10 to 6.
33:36Another chance to watch the Mo Salah Dock straight after tonight's programme.
33:39And there's a full midweek programme in the Premier League.
33:41Eight games on Wednesday.
33:43Match of the day on BBC One and iPlayer from 20 to 11.
33:47Now, no club in Europe's top five leagues had a higher win percentage at home
33:50than Aston Villa in 2025.
33:53Nottingham Forest, their first visitors of 2026.
33:56And Steve Barr was at this one.
34:01Villa, who've won their last ten games here, are able to recall both Cash and Kamara after suspension.
34:08Both Captain McGinn and Martson also return.
34:11And Nana is injured.
34:12Nottingham Forest, who've lost four of their last five Premier League games and their last five here,
34:18are able to welcome back Ola Einer after injury for the first time since September,
34:24while Frenchman Dylan Bacqua starts for the first time under Sean Dyche.
34:28Bright sunshine on a very chilly afternoon in the Midlands.
34:43Williams is quickly closed down.
34:44Watkins denied by John Victor.
34:47It's still alive.
34:51Martson.
34:53It isn't now.
34:54What a let-off.
34:56It's a fantastic stop, you know, from the Brazilian goalkeeper.
35:00Nico Williams put under pressure by Rodgers.
35:03And Watkins thought he'd given Villa the lead.
35:05But the six-foot-six frame of John Victor did brilliantly well.
35:09His right leg denying Watkins.
35:14Still trying to get his watch moving there, I think.
35:20Clancy from Konza.
35:21Lindelof had to make that.
35:26He didn't.
35:27It's Dominguez for Nottingham Forest.
35:30Hutchinson.
35:31Stepping inside.
35:33And forcing the save out of Martinez.
35:39When Hutchinson came inside here,
35:41you could see his intention.
35:43Martinez equal to it.
35:44Good height for him.
35:45Rodgers.
35:57Watkins.
36:01The special moment
36:03that was required
36:05to break down Nottingham Forest's stubborn resistance
36:10provided by the man in form,
36:14Oli Watkins.
36:16On his 250th appearance for the club.
36:20His sixth goal in seven Premier League games
36:23to finally unlock the forest door.
36:30And it needed to be of the highest quality.
36:33And it was.
36:35Two quick touches.
36:38And then the emphatic one.
36:41And John Victor actually
36:42went with his opposite hand there
36:44and got something on it.
36:46It wasn't right in the corner,
36:48but the speed of the strike
36:50went past him.
36:53Unai Emery's side
36:54have the advantage
36:56at the break.
36:57Tielemans.
37:01Martsen.
37:02Martsen.
37:03That's too close to the goalkeeper.
37:05Oh, he's decided not to catch it.
37:09Got the job done in the end.
37:12There's a slight question mark
37:14about John Victor there.
37:14Simon Hooper says playoff.
37:20Backward does that,
37:21but he's closed down by Tielemans.
37:24Watkins behind McGinn.
37:26Cash is in space.
37:28Kamara's found him.
37:30McGinn coming in!
37:31Two-nil Aston Villa.
37:36Three and a half minutes
37:37into the second half.
37:40A second Premier League goal
37:42of the season
37:42for the Villa skipper
37:44John McGinn.
37:46Well, a perfect end
37:47to the first half
37:48and a dream start
37:50to the second.
37:52And he reacted quickly
37:53in the end here.
37:55The credit Tielemans there
37:57to win it back.
37:58And it eventually came out
38:01to cash.
38:03He delivered the cross
38:04for Watkins McGinn.
38:06In ahead of Milenkovic
38:07who was a little flat-footed
38:09but the desire
38:11from John McGinn
38:12to get there
38:13won the day.
38:16Fully committed as ever.
38:19Aston Villa two.
38:21Nottingham Forest nil.
38:26Committer meeting required now.
38:28His team
38:29the second lowest scorers
38:31in the Premier League
38:32this season.
38:33Only 18 goals
38:34Forest of Mustard.
38:37Long from Milenkovic.
38:39Jesus.
38:42He's done so well
38:43to potentially keep that alive.
38:44Dominguez.
38:46In from Hutchinson.
38:48Oh, and backward.
38:49Bakwa.
38:51Completely miscued the header.
38:54First real moment
38:55of promise
38:56from Nottingham Forest.
39:00Early ball in
39:00eventually from
39:01Amari Hutchinson.
39:04And that needed to go
39:05right across
39:06the face of the goal
39:08from Bakwa.
39:10He knew that too.
39:11It's Bakwa.
39:20Gibbs-White
39:20bursting forward
39:21and he's onside.
39:22It's Morgan Gibbs-White
39:23for Forest.
39:27Hope is restored.
39:28Seven games
39:31without a goal.
39:32He's popped up
39:33just past the hour mark
39:36with a perfect time
39:38to end that run
39:38and get it back
39:40to 2-1.
39:43Timed his run
39:44to perfection.
39:45Took his time
39:46and then lifted
39:47it beautifully
39:48past Emi Martinez.
39:51Lovely finish
39:52from the Forest skipper.
39:55And from nowhere
39:55they are back
39:56in the game.
39:58Villa 2,
39:59Forest 1.
40:0113 goals
40:02conceded
40:03in the last
40:03seven games
40:04now for the home team.
40:06In the possession
40:07of Hutchinson.
40:11Couldn't find
40:12McAtee though.
40:16Tielemans
40:18into McGinn.
40:20Oh, the goalkeeper's
40:21in no-man's land
40:22here.
40:23And John McGinn
40:25makes him play.
40:29His second
40:31and Villa's third.
40:35And it could be
40:35a crucial goal
40:36in the outcome.
40:38The skipper
40:39at the double.
40:44Well, the goalkeeper's
40:45down, holding his
40:46left calf.
40:48But when this ball
40:49was played
40:49by Uri Tielemans
40:52he was never
40:54ever getting there.
40:55That's a super
40:56finish from McGinn.
40:59But
40:59John Victor
41:00caught
41:01where he was
41:03never getting
41:03to the ball
41:04or the man.
41:06And from then on
41:07it was
41:08composure
41:09what McGinn
41:10provided.
41:11Look at the curl
41:12on that
41:12from that angle.
41:14Absolute
41:14precision.
41:15Aston Villa
41:17three.
41:18Nottingham Forest
41:18one.
41:20And you would expect
41:21Matzels
41:22to be required
41:23here
41:24for the remaining
41:2517 minutes
41:26for Nottingham Forest.
41:27and it is a tearful
41:31John Victor
41:31that leaves
41:33the field
41:34at Villa Park.
41:36Matzels
41:36without a
41:37warm-up
41:37and he's told
41:38he is coming on.
41:45Williams.
41:47Can
41:48Forest
41:48hit back
41:49straight away?
41:51Gibbs
41:51White!
41:51Martinez
41:53required.
41:54Martinez
41:54required.
41:56Well, the goalkeeper
41:57was changed
41:57at one end.
41:58The Villa
41:58one
41:59had to stay
42:00warm and
42:01had to stay
42:02alive.
42:03Could have
42:03saved you would
42:04have expected
42:04him to make.
42:07Aston Villa
42:07up to second
42:08with an
42:1011th
42:10consecutive
42:11home win.
42:12The last time
42:13that happened
42:13was 36
42:15years ago.
42:17That is
42:17five defeats
42:18in 6-0
42:18for Forest
42:19now.
42:19Aston Villa
42:20three,
42:21Nottingham Forest
42:22one.
42:24The manager
42:25pushes me
42:25a lot.
42:26He's very
42:26demanding.
42:27He says I
42:27should be
42:27scoring more
42:28goals,
42:28getting in
42:29better positions
42:29and we
42:30do a lot
42:31of analysis
42:32this morning.
42:33He pushed
42:33me hard
42:34to get in
42:34those positions
42:35and thankfully
42:36today I've
42:36managed to
42:37get two goals
42:37so hopefully
42:38he'll get
42:38off my back
42:39a wee bit.
42:39It's a
42:40strange situation
42:41today because
42:41there's a lot
42:41of energy
42:42out there,
42:42there's a lot
42:42of performance,
42:43there's a lot
42:43of your
42:43mentality because
42:44you know
42:44come back
42:452-1
42:45looks different
42:46but you
42:47can't keep
42:47giving yourself
42:48a mountain
42:48to climb.
42:49We did it
42:49in the last
42:49game,
42:50pretty soft
42:51goals from
42:51the organisational
42:53point of view
42:53and players
42:54just switching
42:55off to the
42:55basics and
42:56the basics
42:57of the
42:57principles
42:57of the
42:58shape
42:58and the
42:58organisation.
42:59We were
42:59focusing a lot
43:00this match
43:01to try to
43:02keep the
43:03energy we
43:04had or we
43:06showed with
43:06but of course
43:07playing out of
43:07matches
43:08last week
43:09in Chelsea
43:10and Arsenal
43:11now again
43:13we needed
43:15rest,
43:17we needed
43:17work and
43:19get focused
43:20for this
43:20match with
43:20the energy
43:21we showed
43:22it and
43:23how the
43:24players respond
43:25in all
43:26demand we
43:27are settling
43:28really
43:28fantastic.
43:30Well they
43:31struggled in
43:31the second
43:32half of the
43:32Emirates
43:32Alan because
43:33they lost
43:34Inanna at
43:35half time
43:35with injury
43:36and Kamara
43:36was suspended
43:37they had him
43:38back today
43:39and it made
43:39a big
43:39difference.
43:40Yeah with
43:40Kamara and
43:42Tielemans in
43:42that midfield
43:43and then you
43:44heard John
43:44McGinn saying
43:45he has to
43:45get other
43:45managers telling
43:46them to get
43:46into better
43:47positions
43:47well that
43:48happened today
43:48and it
43:49worked perfectly
43:49for them
43:50today and
43:50the midfield
43:51balance was
43:51absolutely
43:52superb I
43:53thought.
43:53You've got
43:54Kamara and
43:54Tielemans there
43:55this is in
43:56the first
43:56minute and
43:57it all
43:58happens because
43:59of their
43:59positioning really
44:00is that there's
44:02actually no way
44:02out for Nottingham
44:03Forest when
44:04they win the
44:04ball back
44:05because they're
44:06closing down
44:07there and
44:09then all of a
44:10sudden they're
44:11closing down
44:11there and
44:12there's just no
44:12way out at
44:13all.
44:14Rogers is also
44:14closing there
44:15so force them
44:16into a mistake
44:18and after the
44:18first minute
44:19it should be
44:191-0.
44:20Ollie Watkins
44:20should put the
44:21ball in the
44:21back of the
44:22net it's a
44:23decent save.
44:24And then the
44:24last minute of
44:25the half where
44:25Forest are
44:26thinking they're
44:27doing okay
44:27the midfield
44:28balance again
44:29they get the
44:29throwing and
44:30their set up
44:31there is perfect
44:32and that little
44:33swivel here from
44:34Tielemans then the
44:35pass into Rogers
44:37he doesn't even
44:37look he actually
44:38knows exactly
44:39where he is and
44:41as I said that
44:41balance was
44:42superb I mean the
44:43finish is wow
44:44it's a fantastic
44:45goal it really is
44:46and again there's
44:48no way out they
44:48just don't give up
44:50on it.
44:51Tielemans is there
44:51expecting there's
44:52no foul but
44:54what's the reaction?
44:56He's straight after
44:57it he blocks it
44:57and then all of a
44:58sudden Villa are on
44:59the front foot and
45:00then you can see his
45:00midfield partner there
45:01Camaro he's then
45:03getting forward and
45:03playing the pass in
45:04and then McGinn's
45:05getting into those
45:06good positions that
45:08he was on about
45:09that his manager's
45:10telling him to get
45:11into I mean this is
45:12an incredible pass
45:13and a great touch
45:14from McGinn
45:14like a quarterback
45:16pass isn't it
45:16there?
45:17He just guides it
45:18in there but you
45:19see the touch better
45:20I mean God knows
45:21what the goalkeeper's
45:22doing I haven't got a
45:23clue where he is
45:24but just have a
45:25look at the pass
45:26here the way to
45:28pass and then the
45:29touch from McGinn
45:30you can see where he
45:31wants it that touch
45:33there with the right
45:33foot and then to get
45:34that much bend and
45:35curl on it when he's
45:36under pressure it
45:38really is a great
45:38finish.
45:38You can see it there
45:40from this angle
45:41how far
45:41have a look at the
45:42ball boy as well
45:42he's ready to go
45:43look
45:43he's up on his knees
45:45ready to celebrate
45:45it's such a clever
45:48goal a clever finish
45:49but I thought the
45:50midfield balance for
45:51Villa to do was
45:52spot on
45:53and that takes them
45:55into second
45:57from a Nottingham
45:58Forest point of view
45:59we can show you the
46:00sort of run that they
46:01are on at the
46:02moment
46:02Sean Dyche
46:04Allen said
46:04afterwards
46:05that before today's
46:07game if you look at
46:08their last six so
46:09from Wolves onwards
46:10they've taken six
46:11points out of those
46:11six games
46:12and Sunderland in that
46:14same period had taken
46:15seven
46:16so it's his job to
46:17look at the reality
46:18he said not the
46:19noise
46:20and Sunderland are
46:21obviously getting a
46:21lot of
46:22do you understand
46:22that logic?
46:23I understand where
46:24he's coming from
46:24and what he's trying
46:25to say because he's
46:26trying to give his
46:27team a little bit of
46:28confidence and a
46:29little bit of
46:29belief but what I
46:31would say the game
46:31they have on Tuesday
46:32against West Ham
46:33at West Ham is a
46:35huge game for both
46:36football clubs
46:37and if Forrest can
46:38go there and win
46:39I would say that's
46:40pretty much enough
46:41for them
46:41Do you think Forrest
46:42in that game can
46:44take advantage of
46:45the pressure that
46:46will be on West
46:47Ham at home and
46:48what the atmosphere
46:49will be like?
46:49I think they're
46:50going to have to
46:50I think they're
46:51going to have to go
46:52there and try and
46:53win the game
46:53like we said
46:54before it's a
46:54massive game from
46:56a West Ham point
46:57of view being at
46:58home someone's
46:59actually better be
47:00in the way
47:00there's always been
47:01an expectation and
47:02a demand to play
47:04the right way at
47:04West Ham to win
47:05games to compete
47:06that we spoke
47:06about at the
47:07top of the show
47:08but that is a
47:09huge game
47:09massive
47:10Forrest probably
47:11have more
47:12carry more of a
47:12threat don't they?
47:13Well yeah I mean
47:14judging they've
47:15lost the last four
47:16but judging by
47:17their performance
47:18today and the
47:18noise that will
47:19create West Ham
47:20it'll be a tough
47:21atmosphere they'll
47:22make at home on
47:22Tuesday
47:23OK there's a
47:25pattern to
47:25Brighton's last
47:26six it reads
47:27lost draw
47:28lost draw
47:29lost draw
47:30they were looking
47:31to break the
47:32sequence against
47:32a Burnley side
47:33six points from
47:34safety Simon
47:35Brotherton was at
47:36the Amex
47:3618 year old
47:39Greek international
47:40Haralampos Kostoulos
47:41makes his first
47:42Premier League start
47:43and Caro Mitoma
47:45is first in over
47:46three months
47:46Jorginho Rutter
47:48and Brian Gruder
47:49both come in too
47:50Pascal Gross
47:51has just rejoined
47:52the club from
47:52Borussia Dortmund
47:53and is named as
47:54one of the
47:55substitutes
47:55Burnley make three
47:57changes with
47:58Jadon Antony and
47:59Jakob Brun Larsson
48:00playing instead of
48:01Marcus Edwards and
48:02Loom Chauner
48:03while Bashir
48:04Humphries starts
48:05at the back
48:05with Maxime
48:06Esteve absent
48:07through injury
48:08Burnley actually
48:10unbeaten in their
48:11last seven away
48:12league fixtures
48:13against Brighton
48:14and Hove Albion
48:15haven't lost away
48:16to them in over
48:17a decade now
48:18excellent play
48:20opportunity
48:21taking flag up
48:22straight away
48:23though
48:23to deny
48:24Kostoulos
48:25took his chance
48:27extremely well
48:28but the flag was
48:29raised immediately
48:30as soon as the
48:30ball was played
48:31forward
48:31very tight call
48:34there
48:34but Kostoulos
48:35certainly took the
48:37chance superbly
48:38well
48:39it looked close
48:41and indeed it was
48:43it was extremely
48:43close
48:44and it was
48:46almost
48:47the perfect start
48:48for Fabian
48:48Herzl's team
48:49small margins
48:51Brighton without a
48:52win actually
48:53in just over a
48:54month now
48:55back end of
48:55November at
48:56Nottingham Forest
48:57looking to make a
48:57positive start to
48:58this one
48:59in towards Ruta
49:00blasted towards
49:01goal by Gomez
49:02and it was a
49:04shot that
49:05was heading
49:06goal
49:06we'll hear from
49:07Diego Gomez
49:08deflected behind
49:10by Ekdal
49:11it's excellent play
49:16from Jorginho
49:17Ruta
49:17backed up by
49:18Gruda
49:18Ayari
49:20Kostoulos
49:22is in there
49:22blasted home
49:23by Ruta
49:24it's taken
49:26them nearly
49:27half an hour
49:28but this time
49:30the home side
49:30really are ahead
49:31and Jorginho
49:34Ruta
49:34has his second
49:35goal of the
49:36season
49:36Ruta's initial
49:39attacking burst
49:40appeared to have
49:40come to an end
49:41Gruda
49:42and Ayari
49:43kept it alive
49:44and Kostoulos
49:46with the deflection
49:47that fell
49:48at the Frenchman's
49:50feet
49:50and Ruta
49:51buried the chance
49:52Joel Veltman

56:1911
56:19Premier League
56:19games
56:20really
56:21disappointing
56:21last season
56:22of course
56:23conceding 16
56:25goals
56:26and this
56:27season
56:27they've
56:28conceded 39
56:29goals
56:29the signs
56:30were there
56:30from early
56:31on
56:31they look
56:33like an
56:33OK
56:34position
56:34it's
56:35just a
56:36long
56:36ball
56:36over the
56:36top
56:37but the
56:37signs
56:37were there
56:38I think
56:38that's
56:38poor
56:38defending
56:38from the
56:39fullback
56:39you've
56:39got to
56:39be in
56:40the inside
56:41looking out
56:41here
56:43you know
56:43Ruti
56:44gets it
56:44here
56:44and you
56:44think
56:46there's
56:46not
56:47anywhere
56:47you can
56:47go
56:47you can't
56:48come
56:48back
56:48inside
56:49you've
56:49got to
56:49make
56:49contact
56:50and
56:50try and
56:51win
56:51the ball
56:52and stop
56:53him
56:53getting
56:53inside
56:53it's
56:54poor
56:55defending
56:55there
56:58when the
57:02ball
57:02goes
57:02wide
57:02you have
57:02to
57:02make
57:03contact
57:03and win
57:03the ball
57:04again
57:04they've
57:05got
57:05bodies
57:05back
57:05don't
57:06really
57:06look
57:06like
57:06they're
57:06in
57:06much
57:07danger
57:07no
57:07contact
57:08poor
57:10really
57:10again
57:11can you
57:11regain it
57:12and try
57:13and play
57:13out
57:13it's
57:15an unbelievable
57:15finish
57:16they caused
57:18their own
57:18problems
57:18overplaying
57:21sometimes
57:22when you're
57:23away from
57:23home
57:23it's
57:23difficult
57:23you've
57:24got to
57:24get
57:24the ball
57:24from
57:24back
57:25to
57:25front
57:25quicker
57:25this
57:26should
57:26have
57:26been
57:26a
57:27goal
57:27and
57:28they
57:28just
57:28continue
57:28to
57:29play
57:29the
57:29same
57:29way
57:29it
57:31goes
57:31even
57:32ahead
57:32no one's
57:33engaging
57:34getting
57:34close
57:35it's
57:35too
57:35easy
57:35not
57:36defending
57:36the
57:37box
57:37again
57:38another
57:38great
57:38chance
57:39Brighton
57:40could have
57:40scored
57:40four goals
57:41and you
57:42can see
57:42why
57:43Scott
57:43Park
57:43is
57:43disappointed
57:44because
57:44it's
57:45a reflection
57:45on the
57:46team
57:46he wants
57:47to put
57:48out
57:48and
57:48like I
57:48said
57:49last
57:49season
57:49conceding
57:5016
57:50goals
57:51and
57:51it's
57:51almost
57:52against
57:52his
57:52principles
57:5339
57:54goals
57:54is way
57:54too
57:55many
57:55Brighton
57:57up to
57:58eight
57:58despite
57:58that being
57:59just their
57:59first win
58:00in seven
58:00seven
58:00yeah
58:01that's the
58:02big picture
58:02for Brighton
58:03I think
58:03I would
58:03expect
58:04something
58:04around that
58:05now
58:05and I know
58:06there were one or two
58:07that weren't happy
58:08on that run
58:09but they're back to
58:10winning ways
58:11and as you said
58:12back up to eight
58:12here's the
58:13table then
58:13Arsenal extend
58:14their lead
58:15to six
58:15points
58:16Manchester City
58:17face Chelsea
58:17on Sunday
58:18Villa are
58:18into second
58:19after an
58:19eight successive
58:20home league
58:21win
58:21Wolves have
58:22doubled their
58:23points tally
58:23for the season
58:24after beating
58:25West Ham
58:25West Ham
58:26four points
58:27behind Forest
58:27and they play
58:28each other
58:28on Tuesday
58:29that's it
58:30thanks to
58:31Alan and
58:31Jermaine
58:32and now that
58:32they have
58:32that first
58:33win
58:33maybe
58:342026
58:34will be
58:35the year
58:35of the
58:35Wolf
