00:00Oh, look at that!
00:02Oh, look at that!
00:04Absolutely phenomenal!
00:06Rooney up!
00:08Welcome to Match of the Dead.
00:30Hello, two games on tonight's Match of the Day.
00:52Arsenal faced Tottenham in the North London derby,
00:55followed by in-form Aston Villa's visit to Leeds.
00:58Joe Hart and Danny Murphy are revved up and ready to go.
01:02So to the Emirates, the league leaders Arsenal
01:04looking to get back to winning ways after Sunderland
01:06interrupted a run of ten victories last time out,
01:09while Spurs were desperate to keep their unbeaten away form intact.
01:14I think Tottenham Arsenal has always been an exciting game.
01:23It's a big, big game and I do like the big games, you know.
01:26It's Emmanuel Petit for Arsenal and that is a fantastic goal.
01:30Garfield!
01:32Of course, you know, we want to win that.
01:37We'll push our teams to play football and not to make war.
01:41Oh, what a try!
01:43David Bentley against his old club!
01:45And a Bayouar! And a Bayouar! What a goal!
01:49That's an incredible strike by Harry Kane!
01:53Sunderbanks in three!
01:55Tottenham running right against Arsenal!
01:59Arsenal! Trossard!
02:04Steve Wilson was at the Emirates.
02:08Sometimes in the long history of this fixture,
02:10there have been games which signified much more
02:13than just being North London's top dog
02:15and this feels like one of them.
02:17Results at Anfield and St James' have given Arsenal
02:20an extraordinary opportunity to exert a grip on the title race.
02:25An opportunity which Spurs would dearly love to deny them.
02:29No Gabriel for the Gunners in Capier deputises.
02:32He's been good, but he's not Gabriel.
02:34Calafiore is fit, Jokeres is not.
02:37Tottenham are the only side with an unbeaten away record
02:40in the Premier League.
02:41Five changes from Thomas Frank today
02:43and a change of formation.
02:45In come Danso, Udoggi, Bentancur, Odabert and Kudas.
02:53Arsenal's current 21-year wait to be champions
02:56is the longest since they won their first title in 1931.
03:00Is this their year?
03:03This is Saka for Arsenal.
03:05They're in a good position and Rice!
03:12Eze in that number 10 position
03:14delightfully into Rice and he really hit it well.
03:20Gabriel watching on
03:22and he will be for some weeks.
03:24That's not where they want him to be.
03:31And Capier caught by Kudas.
03:33Play will go on.
03:34Declan Rice to Leandro Trossard.
03:36Deep looking that from Trossard
03:38but Saka's caressed it beautifully.
03:41And Udoggi does foul him.
03:45It is a free kick to Arsenal.
03:47Michael Oliver's trying to let things go.
03:51Brilliant touch from Saka here
03:53and then Udoggi was all over him.
03:56Michael Oliver blew up in the end.
03:59Well, 20 Premier League goals scored this season.
04:01Arsenal, 10 of them from set pieces.
04:05Not counting penalty kicks.
04:06Saka with more than enough ability
04:10to put this right on the money.
04:13And it's heading towards the top corner.
04:16And ruffled the top of the net in the end.
04:21Huge week for Arsenal.
04:23Tottenham followed by Bayern Munich
04:24and then a trip to Stamford Bridge
04:27to play Chelsea
04:28who just may be their main challengers
04:30for the title.
04:31Who knows?
04:32Mourinho into Saka.
04:36Beautifully done.
04:37But he's knocked over by Bentancur
04:39and the cards coming out here.
04:42He'd nutmeged Van de Ven
04:44quite beautifully.
04:46And Rodrigo Bentancur
04:47made sure he was going no further.
04:5433 played.
04:56Saka's free kick
04:58and pushed away by Vicario.
05:03A save you would expect him to make.
05:07It's a decent save
05:08and he's probably seen it slightly late.
05:10But he'd be disappointed
05:11not to keep that out.
05:14Into the last 10 minutes
05:15of an absorbing first half.
05:19There's a little bit of room here.
05:21Michel Marino.
05:22Oh, great run by Trossard.
05:25Trossard on the turn.
05:26It's in.
05:32Arsenal breakthrough.
05:35Leandro Trossard.
05:40It's a brilliant run
05:41and he's beautifully found.
05:43And it's a pretty tidy finish too.
05:46He kept calm,
05:47kept his balance
05:49and delivers Arsenal the lead.
05:50It's a funny-looking deflection in there,
05:52having said that.
05:54Beautiful ball by Marino.
05:58As he turns and swivels here.
06:00It's come off Van de Ven
06:03into the back of the net.
06:05Well, the shot being on target,
06:06Trossard will be credited with the goal.
06:08Nicely done.
06:09Timber whipped in.
06:10Densel away.
06:11Room for Rice.
06:12Quickly moving it to Ezek.
06:13Wriggling on.
06:14Two-nil.
06:16Two inside five minutes for Arsenal.
06:18And you can't help but feel
06:21that scoring in a North London derby
06:23has been a dream for Iberi Ezek.
06:24Since he was a very young man.
06:25Now what he always wanted to be.
06:26An Arsenal hero.
06:27He scores.
06:28against Tottenham.
06:29And the gunners have a two-goal lead.
06:30And the gunners have a two-goal lead.
06:31One inside five minutes for Arsenal.
06:32And you can't help but feel
06:34that scoring in a North London derby
06:36has been a dream for Iberi Ezek.
06:38Since he was a very young man.
06:41Now what he always wanted to be.
06:46an Arsenal hero.
06:47He scores.
06:48Against Tottenham.
06:49And the gunners have a two-goal lead.
06:57Moved it so quickly into Ezek Rice.
07:00And he showed great composure.
07:05Vicario got a hand to it.
07:07Couldn't keep it out.
07:09There is a VAR check here for a possible offside.
07:14But neither were impeding the view.
07:17Of Vicario.
07:18In the opinion of Stuart Atwell.
07:21The goal stands.
07:23Arsenal two.
07:24Tottenham Oxford nil.
07:26Given Danso off.
07:29It shall be Simons on.
07:31Match four again for Tottenham.
07:40Oh look at the spacer as it has.
07:42Three-nil.
07:43Inside 40 seconds of the second half.
07:50Eberici Ezek.
07:53In dreamland.
07:54Arsenal three goals up.
07:56In the North London derby.
07:58They are blowing Tottenham Hotspur away here.
08:02Catch us if you can is the message.
08:06Tottenham are in serious trouble now.
08:13This is a desperate start to the second half for them.
08:17But such a composed finish from Ezek.
08:21The gap is wide and inviting.
08:24And the clip shot into the corner of Vicario's net.
08:30There have only ever been three hat-tricks scored in North London derbies.
08:34Ezek is a goal away.
08:36Ezek is a goal away.
08:40Good challenge in Jaupalina by Mikel Moreno.
08:43Saka is bundled over but Arsenal have the ball, have the initiative, have the advantage.
08:49Rice to Trosser.
08:50Ezek is in the middle.
08:52And that little touch from Romero just might have denied him a hat-trick.
08:56Mikel Moreno.
08:59Romero again.
09:00Zubimendi.
09:01Great block, Romero.
09:05And the offside flag has gone up.
09:07You've got to credit the Tottenham skipper here.
09:10Arsenal look like they could score almost at will.
09:15But this game has surely gone.
09:18So the face not saving the game is what they're talking about.
09:26Great challenge, Jaupalina.
09:29Richarlison looking to lob David Raja.
09:31And he has!
09:35A piece of impudence and brilliance from Richarlison.
09:40With a big thank you to Jaupalina who won it brilliantly here from Zubimendi.
09:44But that's fantastic from Richarlison.
09:47And that's Arsenal 3, Tottenham 1.
09:51Wonderfully done.
09:52Tottenham Hotspur are on the scoreboard.
09:58And it's something.
09:59I believe it was their first attempt of the game.
10:02And as an attempt go, it was a very, very good one.
10:10Saka.
10:12Curling, pushed away.
10:15Vicario always had its measure.
10:17But he treated it with the respect it was due.
10:20Vicario's forward ball.
10:33Commanding header by Capier.
10:35Here's Marino nicely around the corner.
10:37Leandro Trossard.
10:38Leandro Trossard.
10:39And space for Iberic.
10:40Eze!
10:41Brilliant!
10:45Only the fourth hat-trick ever in North London Derby history.
10:49And the first since Alan Sunderland in 1978.
10:54Green's come true for Eberici, Eze.
11:00What a day.
11:05For Eze.
11:08Great composure again.
11:10Look how he allows that ball to just roll across Udoggi.
11:14Arsenal four.
11:18Tottenham Hotspur one.
11:20It's his day.
11:22It's Arsenal's day.
11:25To say it's been easy would be unfair on Tottenham.
11:29But it's certainly been Eze.
11:35Hand of end.
11:36And he's lost it.
11:39And it could be a fourth.
11:41Great save Vicario to deny Eze.
11:43He shakes his head.
11:48He knows.
11:50Too close to Vicario.
11:52It really should have been his fourth.
11:58That is the sound of the Emirates in ecstasy for Eberici, Eze.
12:04Right now Arsenal have the look of champions elect.
12:08They look unstoppable.
12:09And Tottenham were no match for them today.
12:13Eze with three.
12:14Arsenal four.
12:15Tottenham one.
12:18It's only the fourth hat-trick ever in North London Derby history.
12:20I know.
12:21I just heard.
12:22So that tells you about the difficulty and what he's done today.
12:25And to be fair, he could have scored four or five, you know.
12:28But that's the play that we need to play to, in big games, create those magic moments, those actions that unbalance the team.
12:35And I thought his all-around play today was excellent.
12:39Special day for me, my family, and, yeah, happy to help the team to win today.
12:43The players on the team, the ability, the talent, there's so much.
12:47And from every angle we're threatening to score goals.
12:49So, yeah, it's a good day today and a good performance from the team all-around, I think.
12:54We can only apologize to the fans for not performing better.
12:57I was very, how can I say, confident that we could be very competitive today, but we weren't.
13:05I take always the fundamental responsibility for performances.
13:07And the biggest thing, both halves, no matter what, it is we don't play aggressive enough, we don't get close enough, we don't win enough duels, then it doesn't matter what system we play.
13:16Nobody wins a title in November.
13:18Clearly it's much too early, but it does feel like you have an incredible momentum.
13:23Yes, we have a really good momentum, but you can see how difficult it is to game every game in the Premier League.
13:29You see yesterday's results today and how teams, even when they win, how much they have to suffer.
13:33It is a long run. Let's go game by game. Enjoy tonight.
13:37Then we have Bayern here and then we have Chelsea away, so we have a massive week ahead.
13:43Yeah, it's a huge week ahead, but they have capitalized on others faltering this weekend.
13:46And so much of the talk ahead of this North London derby was about those names who weren't there.
13:51And was this going to give Spurs an opportunity?
13:53Well, there was only one name on everyone's lips at the end of it.
13:56Eberice Eza.
13:58He's a joy to watch. He's a beautiful footballer.
13:59But I have to say the Arsenal team performance was incredible.
14:03They were better than Spurs physically, technically, tactically.
14:08And the most worrying thing for Spurs was that Arsenal wanted it more.
14:12They really did. They wanted it more, which is unacceptable from Spurs' point of view.
14:16But getting back to Eza, I mean, his best performance in an Arsenal shirt.
14:21He showed all aspects of his game and his play.
14:25He's got this wonderful knack of making the game look easy and finding space so effortlessly.
14:30Here, he doesn't even see Rice till late.
14:32Still manages to find him with that beautiful little flick and creativity.
14:35This is why they brought him in to unlock defences that sit deep and put numbers behind.
14:42Talking about the team performance, Timber there.
14:44You need runners when you've got a packed defence.
14:46Timber was exceptional today.
14:48But Zubamendi there is the central defensive midfielder.
14:51He's ahead of Eza.
14:52And every time someone runs past him, he just drops into that little space that's vacated.
14:57Great feet on the edge of the box to skip through there and get a little bit of luck with the deflection, but still a good finish.
15:02More of the same in the second half.
15:04See how he just drops into the space when Rice penetrates.
15:08And when he gets the ball, it doesn't matter with him right or left foot.
15:11It's elegant, it's composed.
15:13There's one thing you have to do if you play for Arteta, and that's defend.
15:17They carry nobody.
15:19And if you don't do it, you don't play.
15:20Now they've got the competition for places and squad depth.
15:23And look at this for a turn of pace as well.
15:24I mean, Koudis is no slouch.
15:27And not only does he get back and help his team,
15:29probably doesn't want this back from the keeper, actually.
15:32But when he gets it, a little bit more composure around the corner.
15:35And he was growing all the time.
15:37The fans adore him already.
15:41When he gets in this position again, just patient, takes his time, picks his spot.
15:46He's the type of player now that Arsenal can rely on.
15:51He's confident.
15:53He's a game changer.
15:55He's a wow footballer, that's what I call him.
15:57I mean, could have had four or five, Arteta's right.
16:00And whoever you support, you can't help but like him and enjoy his football.
16:04You'd have to have a heart of stone, wouldn't you?
16:07And there is stats of speaking for themselves, aren't they?
16:09The top English player on that list in terms of goals involvement in 2025.
16:13But his story is so inspiring.
16:16Let go by Arsenal at 13 years old and then finding his way through Millwall,
16:20QPR, Crystal Palace to come back to the club that he left as a kid
16:25and do what he did in a North London derby today is just extraordinary.
16:29Well, it is inspiration, like you say.
16:31Resilience, self-belief, just complete single-mindedness
16:35and wanting to achieve his goals.
16:38To play for your boyhood team and score in a game of that size
16:41is something that will live with him forever.
16:43And he will not be sleeping tonight, trust me, I've been there.
16:46It's an amazing feeling.
16:48The great thing about this now for him, he's got the fans on side.
16:51That's done.
16:52He's going to go into the next few games with no fear of anything.
16:55He's going to express himself and use his skill and show the world how good he is.
16:58He saw his belief in that tweet that he put out when he was 15, 16 years old.
17:03Yeah.
17:04When obviously those around him he felt were doubting him,
17:06but he never doubted his innate ability.
17:08Yeah, it takes a lot of self-belief to go through the things that he's been through.
17:12But he knows, he knows what a talent he is
17:14and he knew he could feel that the whole way through football
17:16and he was just looking to find his place.
17:17He certainly looks like he's found it.
17:19Okay, on to a slightly drier, kind of less glitzy part of the game today.
17:24Because the second goal Spurs fans would feel maybe a little bit aggrieved by.
17:28Yeah.
17:29It was awarded and was judged not to have contravened the interference rule.
17:33Now this has been applied inconsistently, some might say, over the last few weeks.
17:37We've seen different examples of where goals have been overturned or goals have been given
17:41and yet things appear to be similar or the same.
17:44Should we remind ourselves of the rule and the examples that we've had lately, Joe?
17:48And you can tell us why you think this could be cleared up quite simply.
17:51Yeah, last two game weeks it's been front and centre, no getting away from it.
17:56We see the law there, four different things that you've got to understand
18:00when you're looking at an offside, especially from a goalkeeper's point of view.
18:07Okay, so we've got the first example that we had today.
18:10Abrice Eze, Trossard in an offside position.
18:13Then we had Van Dijk two weeks ago at the Etihad, Robertson in an offside position.
18:17Here we have Murillo and Doi at Anfield yesterday.
18:21Okay, so first example, Trossard.
18:23So this is the one that I think, this is Vicario's vision.
18:27I think this is preventing an opponent from being able to play the ball
18:30by clearly obstructing the line of vision.
18:32As it leaves his foot, Trossard is in Vicario's line of vision, offside in my opinion.
18:38Goal given.
18:42City of Manchester, different.
18:44As it leaves Van Dijk's head, he's not obstructing Donnarumma's view.
18:49As we roll it on, Andy Robertson here, look, he's ducking out of the way.
18:55Does Donnarumma know that?
18:56Could be trying to flick it on, making an obvious action
18:58which clearly impacts the ability of an opponent to play the ball.
19:01Questionable, of course it is.
19:03There's holes in it, but if you want to make a case, that's offside.
19:06Murillo at Anfield.
19:08As it leaves his foot, and as Alisson's looking at the ball, is his vision impaired?
19:12No, it's not.
19:13But if we roll it on.
19:15At some moment, Ndoi, who's in an offside position, is preventing an opponent
19:19from being able to play the ball by clearly obstructing the line of vision.
19:23Again, goal given.
19:24In my opinion, you'd have an argument to rule that out.
19:27So for you, it would just be more consistent to say anything,
19:32anybody who's obscuring the vision of the goalkeeper in an offside position?
19:36I think so.
19:37I think that makes it...
19:38Well, that's what the rules are, but they've obviously not taken them
19:41because two of those goals were given.
19:43So it makes it very difficult, and we have these continual conversations,
19:46but with VAR, the ability they've got is to slow it down and pause it,
19:51like I have there, and you can point out why the goal should be ruled out.
19:54And a lot of Spurs fans will probably even concede that actually,
19:58had the goal been ruled out, they would have gone 1-0 down
20:01instead of 2-0 down at half-time,
20:03but they were totally overpowered on every area of the pitch today
20:06and would hold their hands up and say that they just didn't have the fight
20:09they were looking for in that North London derby.
20:11Well, yeah, the lack of fight, but it's the lack of creativity
20:14in the last couple of games, Arsenal and Chelsea at home.
20:17You can see here the XG, top two, lowest in the last two games,
20:21and obviously the one at the bottom, three out of the worst eight this season.
20:23Yes, you can hide behind Kulisewski, Maddison, Solanke not being there,
20:28but the players they've got in that squad are struggling,
20:31really struggling to be brave enough to get on the ball to make things happen.
20:35You could argue only Kudos out of all their front players can hold his head up high a little bit,
20:40and as say, he's created stuff and had to go.
20:43There's a lot of fear in that side, probably too much pragmatism.
20:47Thomas Frank is obviously new to it, he's working out who he can trust and who he can rely on.
20:53The reality is they've got to pick up soon because the level of performance
20:57is the last couple of games is causing discontent amongst the fans for sure.
21:01On the flip side, Arsenal absolutely flying six points clear at the top of the table
21:06in a week where they have Bayern Munich in the Champions League,
21:09Chelsea at the end of the week in the league, of course.
21:12It's a huge week, could be a massively pivotal week for them.
21:14Yeah, of course, and obviously with what's going on yesterday, that was incredible.
21:18Liverpool losing, Man City losing, Arsenal getting at home to Tottenham.
21:21Great performance, momentum's good.
21:23OK, thank you very much.
21:25Aston Villa didn't register a victory until the end of September,
21:28but since then Unai Emery's side have won eight of ten in all competitions.
21:32Today, they travelled to Elland Road.
21:34Alistair Mann was there.
21:37Aston Villa's outstanding form is in marked contrast to that of Leeds,
21:42whose four defeats in their last five games
21:45have seen them fall back into the bottom three.
21:48Daniel Farker says it's certainly not a time to panic, though,
21:51and shows the faith in his side by making just one alteration
21:55to the line-up which fell at Nottingham Forest two weeks ago.
21:59Pascal Strauch is preferred to Yaka Biol.
22:02Scoring, though, has been an issue.
22:04Just ten registered in their eleven games so far.
22:07The return of Jurid Tielemans for Andre Onana is Villa's only
22:11change and small wonder after their near-perfect display
22:15in the 4-0 demolition of Bournemouth last time out.
22:18It's their away form which has let them down.
22:21Only five of their 18 points gathered on their travels.
22:25Leeds have won just one of the last 11 meetings with Aston Villa here at Elland Road,
22:34and that was more than 22 years ago.
22:39Aronson.
22:40Was he fouled? Yes, he was.
22:42Has he fouled? Yes, he was.
22:46Rodgers penalise free-kick Leeds,
22:49and they have the opportunity here to maybe nudge in front from a set-piece.
22:55Aronson staff the orchestrator.
22:58It's a really good ball in, actually.
23:00But it gets scooped up into the air, and was it over the line?
23:03It is!
23:07Leeds celebrate, but no-one's quite sure whether this goal is a goal or not.
23:15Well, there's no doubt the ball crosses the line, but is there an offside?
23:18Is there a foul?
23:19And in the end it bounces off Mecha and over the line.
23:23You get the impression that they're not convinced there was a foul on Martinez,
23:27so I think it is the offside that might prevent it being 1-0 Leeds.
23:32I think it's a goal, and I think it's going to be given,
23:34and in a moment there'll be a second eruption inside Elland Road,
23:38and there it is!
23:40So Mecha has the goal.
23:43No offside, no foul on the goalkeeper.
23:46Leeds one, Aston Villa nil.
23:50And here's proof of the offside or onside, depending on how you want to view it.
23:56But Kin's elbow is the guilty party.
24:02Scoring early goals at home is such an important aspect of any team,
24:07but particularly one who have been struggling for points on their travels
24:12and one of the amazing games of late.
24:15Tielemans has a go, and there's a claim of a handball, and the referee has given a free kick.
24:24It's all happening in the opening moments here.
24:26Buendia very focused, but Lucadina has not given this up either.
24:35It is Buendia, it's over the bar.
24:38And yet another huge cheer around Elland Road.
24:43Buendia, and he was never getting that under the crossbar, was he?
24:46Rodgers.
24:47One back, Okafor emerges with it.
24:59Tries to take on Cash, he gets back at him but concedes the corner.
25:03Sliding challenge, I wonder if Cash gets his hand on the trodden on.
25:08He did, right at the end by Okafor.
25:13Well done again, a menacing present.
25:16Strouck is in there too.
25:19Longstaff's delivery, just about cleared.
25:22Aronson just about saved.
25:26It's a good effort from Aronson.
25:30And a smart save.
25:34He's had that scowl on his face for virtually the entire game, Unai Emery.
25:43Watkins.
25:45Again, he's not going to get there because Rodgers does.
25:48Here's Kamara.
25:50Watkins hits it!
25:52And that is inches beyond the post.
25:57The supporters were in the kind of position where they thought it had gone in.
26:01It hadn't.
26:03So Unai Emery's dissatisfaction at half-time is apparent with a double change already.
26:09Ankem's Ian Mattson and Daniel Marlon,
26:12Lucadine and Emiliano Guendia have made way.
26:23Here's McGinn.
26:27Now Cash.
26:30Marlon.
26:32It's a dangerous ball and it's turned in by Rodgers.
26:34And it hasn't taken Aston Villa long to redress the balance.
26:40Marlon hadn't been on the field very long, but he's already made a contribution.
26:45And Rodgers, who darted to the near post, has helped it over the line.
26:50And within moments of the restart, Aston Villa have repaired all the damage that was caused from the first half display.
26:58Marlon darting in and Rodgers flicking it beyond the goalkeeper.
27:05It's only his second goal of the season, Morgan Rodgers.
27:09And it is a timely walk for Aston Villa.
27:13He made the changes at half-time and within moments of doing so, his side were level.
27:19And one of those substitutes Marlon involved in crafting the equaliser.
27:23Longstaff intervenes.
27:27Here's Okafor, now Metcher.
27:30Couldn't sort his feet out quickly enough and it breaks for McGinn.
27:35Tanaka with a challenge.
27:38McGinn rides it.
27:40Rodgers brings it.
27:42Watkins has it.
27:44Watkins saved by the goalkeeper, spilled by the goalkeeper.
27:47And between he and Stroud they somehow get it out of harm's way.
27:53There's a smile on Lucas Pérez's face, but it's probably one of relief more than anything else.
28:00The Villa second goal just seems to be in the air at the moment.
28:05Telemans in towards the run of Rodgers and it breaks for Barclay who's caught right on the edge of the area.
28:17Stroud gets booked.
28:19Free kick to Aston Villa.
28:20The hush descends over Ellen Road.
28:25As Aston Villa work out who the best player to dispatch this free kick might be.
28:31Rodgers placed it very carefully down.
28:34Sancho is making the case that he should have a crack.
28:38It looks as though Rodgers has won the verbal battle between those who wanted to take it.
28:44A pivotal moment in the game.
28:46Morgan Rodgers, who's already scored this afternoon.
28:53Does so again, and Aston Villa are in front.
28:56Morgan Rodgers making it look so very easy.
29:01And going over to the Villa supporters at that end of the ground.
29:05And he flicked it in at the near post for the equaliser.
29:10He's now just guided it beautifully over the wall to make it 2-1 to Aston Villa.
29:17It's such an unusual way that he hits it.
29:19The ball kind of holds itself in mid-air.
29:24And planks into the corner of the net.
29:27And Morgan Rodgers has single-handedly turned a losing position into a winning one.
29:35One, two, three, three.
29:38Here's Leeds though with James all the way through.
29:40And gets it in!
29:42And the Aston Villa players are all absolutely furious about that.
29:51It was a strange old goal.
29:53James just ran in and dabbed it beyond the goalkeeper.
29:56Was he onside or offside?
30:01It's so tight.
30:03The ball over the top.
30:05James, I think he's just about onside.
30:08And he runs onto it.
30:10And dabs it beyond Martinez and into the back of the net.
30:14Oh, and might there be a touch off Calvert-Lewin?
30:18Was it a touch of the hand?
30:21VAR checking.
30:22Oh, I think it might be handball against Calvert-Lewin.
30:27I don't think this is going to stand because Calvert-Lewin gets the final touch.
30:32And it just strikes his left hand.
30:35It will not count.
30:42Sancho, the tackle by Roden.
30:47Now James.
30:48Pirou, James, fouled.
30:54Free kick to Leeds.
30:57There's a little bit of momentum building for Leeds now.
31:02Trying to find an equaliser and prevent a fifth defeat in six.
31:07Strouk.
31:11Oh, and then just Martinez gets there.
31:15Another good delivery from Longstaff.
31:19Strouk got it.
31:21Martinez saved it.
31:23The final score here at Ellen Road.
31:25Leeds United one.
31:27Aston Villa two.
31:29The timing of the equaliser was so crucial, wasn't it?
31:32Yes, yes.
31:33It was the key to equalise the match.
31:35And then we continued.
31:37And we had chances to score the second goal.
31:40We did.
31:41And we considered a few chances.
31:43A few chances.
31:44Sometimes crossing.
31:45But we defend well the box.
31:48And Emiliano Martinez as well.
31:50And I am so, so happy for the players.
31:52Because the demands.
31:54The standards we are trying to set higher as possible in everything.
31:59They respond fantastically.
32:01Performance wise I was happy.
32:02You can't blame the lads at all.
32:03It's more like at the moment you have a period when many things are going against you.
32:08And then it's more like you have to work even harder.
32:10More details to gain the momentum back again.
32:13That's what we're doing.
32:15Let's talk about that free kick.
32:16There was a technique that you used there.
32:17Describe it if you can.
32:19I call it the Emi Wendier.
32:21He did it obviously the last game before the break.
32:24It's something I've been practising on.
32:25Probably not as hard as him.
32:26Maybe not as much as I should.
32:27But once he was off the pitch and I looked around and there was no one else really that practised him.
32:32I thought, why not?
32:33I know I've got it in the locker.
32:34It's just about consistency.
32:35And I'm really happy that that one went in.
32:38Yeah, it was fantastic.
32:39But is it the Emi Wendier free kick?
32:42Well, my experience of that technique was Gareth Bale.
32:45And it used to frustrate me when I was at Tottenham.
32:48Why he was kicking it so softly.
32:50With so much movement.
32:51And I wasn't able to move.
32:52Because I couldn't pick up the line.
32:55So when I saw that today I was so, so impressed.
32:56Like I say, that's the Emi Wendier to Morgan Rodgers.
32:59But to me it was the Gareth Bale.
33:01He was telling me to use, almost use your ankle.
33:03So hopefully later in the piece when I show you what he means by that.
33:07But it's quite a confusing technique.
33:08But it's such a special technique if you get it right.
33:14And here we are.
33:15This is versus Bournemouth.
33:16This is Wendier.
33:17Like, I've got to clear up why this technique is leaving.
33:20Premier League top goalkeepers stood there just watching the ball go in.
33:24It's such, it's so frustrating and I know exactly how they feel.
33:27This was today.
33:28This is their 20 yard free kick.
33:29Buendier.
33:30I've got the miles per hour up there because these boys are capable of hitting 70, 80 mile an hour shots.
33:34And the fans on the side are probably thinking, whip it goalkeeper's side.
33:37Whip it goalkeeper's side.
33:38Here, first ever free kick in the Premier League by the way.
33:4147 miles an hour.
33:43To have the confidence and step up and do it.
33:45Right, so what I'm going to talk you through is the technique we've known for years.
33:48Almost the David Beckham technique.
33:50We spent standing almost two, three yards to the left.
33:53Ready to approach the ball.
33:55And when you see someone with that technique approaching from two, three yards to the left,
33:59as we see it, there's only one style of free kick.
34:02It's the right to left.
34:03If you're a golfer, the draw.
34:05But what we see here with Morgan Rogers approaching it from straight,
34:09that already makes it difficult for Perry.
34:11As he steps up, uses that technique I've talked about with Gareth Bale.
34:15It almost looks like he's just hit below the ankle.
34:17Usually you want to be using much higher up the foot.
34:20And his technique, he's just looking to softly get it up and over the wall.
34:24Makes it very difficult.
34:25And then leaves Perry stood there.
34:27And I'm going to tell you why.
34:28Here we go.
34:29This is it.
34:30So here we are.
34:31Eight foot ten.
34:32The goal is eight foot high.
34:34Ten inches above the bar when it goes over the wall.
34:36And he has no idea of the trajectory, Perry, when he sees it.
34:39So this is the timeframe.
34:40He's got to make a decision, move and save it.
34:43And a millisecond later, it's five foot above the goal line.
34:47Unbelievable movement.
34:48Unbelievable dippage, as you would say.
34:51And as we move on to our third example, which is the teller of why he's just stood there.
34:56Like I say, Ellen Road, everyone's looking and going, why has he just stood there?
34:59So as the ball leaves Morgan Rogers' foot, it just threatens to swerve left.
35:04That right to left that I was talking about earlier.
35:07It leaves his foot and then just dips the other way.
35:10And this is the moment Perry's set for that ball to come towards him.
35:14Calculations in his head.
35:15Try and get his foot moving.
35:16And in the end, he's stuck in the mud.
35:18Can't move.
35:19Morgan Rogers.
35:20Over to McPhee.
35:21Big high five.
35:22And they absolutely delight because they've given him the confidence to do that.
35:25They've worked on that and they believed he could.
35:27There is something of the sand wedge about it, isn't there?
35:29In the kind of trajectory and how it comes down again.
35:32Do you know what?
35:33I'll tell you this because I've practiced that many times.
35:35It's a very difficult technique and there's not that many players who can do it.
35:38I mean, you need a certain type of posture with your feet.
35:41A certain kind of feet because the flexibility.
35:43Yeah, call it like 10 to 2.
35:4510 past 2 if you like.
35:4610 to 2, sorry.
35:48Rather than, you know, more 12 o'clock feet where you can't open to get the groins.
35:52I know that sounds a bit weird, but I remember.
35:54It was just the 10 past 2 feet that I had in my head.
35:5710 to 2, sorry.
35:58The first time I ever was with England, I was lucky enough to be called over to practice free.
36:02free kicks with Beckham.
36:04And he had this wonderful flexibility within his legs, his feet, his groins,
36:09to be able to get that amazing whip, which nobody else could quite copy
36:13because of the way he sets up.
36:15Physiologically, he was set up ready for it.
36:16Right, let's talk about the second half of Villa.
36:19We've seen this a couple of times where obviously you and I, Emory,
36:21was itching to get in and make a few tweaks and a few changes
36:24because Leeds had had a really good first half.
36:26Leeds were terrific first half and a lot for them to be pleased about in that respect.
36:31But he brought Marlon on to play high up with Watkins instead of the first half
36:35where Rodgers played as a 10 behind Watkins when Dia was on the left.
36:38So he brought Marlon on to occupy the two centre-halves to stretch the game
36:42and try and get behind Leeds, which they didn't manage in the first half.
36:44What that also did is it left a space for Rodgers to come in when he could off the left-hand side.
36:50And this is how they got the first goal. It's a brilliant impact substitution.
36:54We know Marlon's quick. We know he wants to run in behind.
36:56And we know he's had a couple of good games recently.
36:58Probably feels a little bit disappointed he's not starting with Watkins.
37:02But look, both wanting to run that way.
37:04They didn't... Watkins was isolated in the first half on his own.
37:07Two centre-halves against him. It was more difficult.
37:10And then when they get out and they beat the press, look.
37:13There's the pace. There's the options.
37:15And all of a sudden, it's game on.
37:17They're finding themselves getting into the Leeds final third more often.
37:21This time it's Watkins with the shot.
37:24It really was a clever bit of management from Emery
37:29because he needed to do something. They were flat. Leeds were comfortable.
37:32And this is a player who wants to impress.
37:34I love it when subs come on and try and impact the game.
37:36He's beating people. He's dynamic. He's making things happen.
37:39This is a great example. Look, when you play two centre-forwards,
37:42they're both in between the full-back and the centre-half.
37:45Really difficult to play against.
37:48And then the wide men get more space, get more time to come inside.
37:52And McGinn there unlucky with the shot.
37:54And he probably deserved a goal for his efforts in the second half, Marlon.
37:59But he just scuffs this one.
38:00But it was a really good substitution and a small tweak, but a very important one.
38:05I do have to say, though, Leeds second half,
38:07even though they went 2-1 down, they really were resilient,
38:10came back into the game and were unlucky not to get something out of it.
38:14The attitude on the pitch, the fight that they had today,
38:17would seem to see a relationship between the manager and the players, certainly,
38:22that looks good. But in terms of the fans, there was a lot of disquiet in the crowd.
38:25And a fan actually managed to get himself right in front of the Leeds dugout
38:29and was protesting and got taken away.
38:32There were a lot of noises at the end of the game that seemed to say
38:34there may be losing a bit of faith in Daniel Farker.
38:37Yeah, well, it's another loss and they're on a bad run.
38:40I think after their recent performances at Brighton away where they lost heavily
38:45and they lost at Burnley, I think there was a lot of discontent.
38:48That performance today was a good reaction, even though they lost.
38:51They didn't deserve to lose the game over the 90 minutes.
38:53Yeah. But Leeds are an expectant crowd.
38:56The problem is for Leeds, we talked about Tottenham earlier,
38:58Leeds are struggling to score goals.
39:00They've got a very tough run coming up as well, haven't they?
39:03They have. Lost five in six and home is not the fortress they would have hoped
39:06it would be in the Premier League and that's what they've got to come.
39:09No, it's not, but I've been, you know, I was there at the Tottenham game this year.
39:13They had a really good performance. They performed well.
39:16They lost the game, which is unfortunate, of course it is,
39:18but it's difficult coming into the Premier League.
39:20But I saw a really good performance today.
39:21They put a lot of pressure on Emi Martinez,
39:23need to be on his metal towards the end of the game.
39:25That was a good Premier League performance
39:27and they were undone by a bit of brilliance.
39:29But there's no doubt about it, they're up against it.
39:32OK. There's a lot more sport coming up for you on the BBC.

44:13ok we've got a few minutes left
44:17so I think we should talk all things Liverpool
44:18and it is not
44:20roll your eyes at me
44:2120 past 11 on a Sunday night
44:24let's have a little look at other clubs
44:26other teams
44:27who've struggled as champions the following season
44:30because it's not wholly unusual
44:32for a team to have a hard time
44:34Chelsea
44:34after they'd won the league
44:36came back the following season
44:37and after
44:38this stage
44:3912 games
44:40only had 11 points
44:41ended up finishing 10th
44:42Leicester City
44:43perhaps because that was
44:45a slight aberration
44:46and an unusual thing
44:47wasn't it
44:47for Leicester to win the league
44:48you might not be as surprised
44:50with their form the following season
44:52Blackburn Rovers
44:53as well
44:54United
44:54Manchester United
44:55in 96-97
44:57only had 19 points
44:58one more than Liverpool
44:59at this stage
44:59and ended up winning
45:00the league that year
45:02Danny
45:02you've already declared that Liverpool
45:04are not going to win the league
45:05no I mean the expectation is higher
45:07because of the amount of money invested
45:08was huge
45:09even for Liverpool
45:10look Slott's going to take
45:13a lot of stick
45:14in the next week or two
45:15and he's going to be asked
45:17a lot of questions
45:18from the fan base
45:19far and wide
45:20from the media
45:21the reality is
45:23yes he is the manager
45:24and he has to take some responsibility
45:25but
45:26a lot of the players
45:27have to look in the mirror
45:29because
45:29out of last season's players
45:31I'd say only
45:32Sir Bozly
45:34Graven Birch
45:35maybe Robbo
45:35when he's come in
45:36have even got near
45:37to the levels of last season
45:38and that's not good enough
45:39and that
45:40okay
45:40there's lots of different
45:41reasons and theories
45:43but
45:43a lot of it's mentality
45:44you know
45:45because you've won some
45:46and maybe the comfort zone
45:47a little bit
45:48because physically
45:48they're not at it
45:49and only one of the new
45:50four or five
45:51signings
45:52Eketike
45:52has
45:53done well
45:55so
45:56the players have to take
45:57some responsibility
45:57now
45:58what can Slott do
46:00he's got to
46:02make some huge decisions
46:03and that means
46:04leaving some big players out
46:06because
46:06back to basics
46:07is key
46:07defending better
46:09working harder
46:10being more physical
46:11doing the hard yards
46:12it sounds very basic stuff
46:13but he's got to pick
46:15his most physical 11
46:16who he thinks
46:16are going to defend
46:17the best for him
46:18and start getting
46:19some points on the board
46:20don't be thinking
46:21about titles
46:22Champions League
46:23FA Cups
46:24next game
46:25because
46:26the reality is
46:27if he keeps losing games
46:28he won't be in a job
46:29on the form table
46:31over the last
46:32six games
46:33Joe
46:33only Wolves
46:35are below
46:36Liverpool
46:37last night
46:38on Match of the Day
46:38Rob Green and Wayne Rooney
46:39talked about leadership
46:41they talked about
46:42getting back to basics
46:44is it
46:45and you've just alluded
46:46to the same thing there
46:47Danny
46:47is it as simple as that
46:49simple
46:50it's definitely not simple
46:51is it
46:51because if it was
46:52a team like Liverpool
46:53are more than capable
46:54of doing it
46:54Arnaz Slotz
46:55proved himself
46:55last season
46:56that he's a very clever
46:57manager
46:57he knows what he's doing
46:58just that ingredient
46:59it's just not happening
47:00it's gone from you
47:01you let slide
47:02a couple of bad results
47:03but then the other night
47:05you watched them at home
47:05to Real Madrid
47:06and they were fantastic
47:07they absolutely battered
47:08Real Madrid
47:08who've looked good
47:09this season
47:09so I agree with you Danny
47:12something's just not quite there
47:13this is a really big moment
47:15for them in the season
47:16they've probably hoped
47:17a few times
47:18they'd be able to paper
47:18over through
47:19the cracks
47:19the new players
47:20would come good
47:21they're not
47:21they've got to step up
47:23and they've got to perform
47:23over the next couple of weeks
47:24the balance is wrong
47:26somewhere
47:26you know
47:27there's too many players
47:28who look off it
47:29and the ones who are on it
47:30can't compensate
47:31for the ones who aren't
47:32so he's got to find
47:34an XI
47:35that is prepared
47:36to just
47:37be more stable
47:39be more compact
47:40if it means putting
47:41more defensive players
47:42in upsetting a few egos
47:43you've got to do it
47:45PSV at home
47:46in the Champions League
47:47and West Ham away
47:48the next two matches
47:49every game at the moment
47:51you know
47:51looks tough
47:52doesn't it
47:52for them
47:53yeah of course
47:53I think they would have
47:54backed themselves
47:55at Forest at home
47:56the position they've been
47:57this season
47:57to win easily
47:58and they've not
47:58they've struggled
47:59so massive games
48:00in the season for them
48:01OK let's have a quick look
48:02shall we
48:03at the Premier League table
48:04and Arsenal stretch
48:04their lead to six points
48:06which is their biggest
48:07at this stage
48:08of a Premier League season
48:09Aston Villa's win
48:10sends them fourth
48:10with Tottenham now ninth
48:12Leeds miss the chance
48:13to climb out of the
48:14relegation zone
48:14while Wolves are cast
48:15adrift at the bottom
48:16next seven sides
48:17are separated by just
48:18five points
48:19thank you so much
48:20to Joe and Danny
48:21have safe journeys
48:22home both of you
48:23goodnight though
48:24from all of us
48:24the story of the day
48:26Arsenal 4
48:27Tottenham 1
48:28it's North London
