00:00we're back on the road in our trusty traveling auction house on the hunt for treasures hidden
00:11in homes all across Britain oh yes finding value in those overlooked objects auction
00:18supremos Izzy Barmer excited James Broad and Bryony Harford wow the star lot of the day
00:26and transforming has-beens into must-haves restorers J.J. Chalmers Robin Johnson Lauren
00:34Wood and Saf Fakir our mission beautiful to give those unloved and forgotten gems a new lease of
00:42life and make their owners some much-needed money you've got three to four thousand everything we
00:49find and fix we'll go under our gavel as we bring our auctions to you four thousand one hundred
00:56pounds wow you know what we say have gavel we'll travel
01:09isn't this lovely isn't it gorgeous Hampshire in the summertime's hard to be
01:14Bea and Robin are making their way to Gosport just over the water from Portsmouth the maritime
01:21fortress that powered England's 19th century naval dominance but you know some of the things that
01:29Hampshire's famous for no tell me battle of Trafalgar you've got all the facts Robin well he's great at a
01:35quiz you know but come on you two we have a mission to begin they're meeting brother and sister Dave and
01:50Diane at the family home of their mother Hazel and late father Peter we're brought up in a close family
01:57I remember times when we with mum and dad we all used to hug and go happy families yeah yeah mum
02:04and dad just kept the family together really well yeah dockyard worker Peter had suffered for many
02:10years with pulmonary fibrosis hospital visits were common until Dave received an unexpected call
02:18and the consultant phoned me up and said I need to let you know that your father is very poorly he said
02:24I'll be very surprised he's here in two days I think dad thought he had maybe two to three weeks yeah
02:33he did and he said to us too that one of the things he wanted to do was see mum before
02:38mum Hazel now in a care home was reunited with Peter for one last goodbye
02:49when he said I love you Hayes that's the whole ward he's crying the family was devastated their rock had
02:59gone dad passed away at the end of January this year he was just the center of everything everything
03:08was dad amid this very difficult time Dave and Diane now face the task of putting their parents
03:15house on the market when dad passed and we came into the house we had quite a shock actually at what
03:22we found we didn't realize that he had so many collections the main shock to us were these little
03:29matchbox cars that he'd been collecting for years with his friend every Tuesday when they went out shopping
03:35we need help well don't worry Dave be and Robin are heading your way as much as I'm loving your 10
03:45mile an hour drive Robin change them let's go let's go that's right crack the whip B ah look I think this
03:53is it just here oh nice trainers hi how are you do you want to come in yes please hi I'm Dave hi Dave I'm
04:10B nice to meet you good to meet you what a lovely house you've got here it's a two-bedroom bungalow and
04:15there's outbuildings as well so if you want to have a little mooch around go and see where you want to
04:19look at bring yourself all right well do you want to start a stone it's a bungalow nice try this may
04:28only be a two-bedroom bungalow but it packs a mighty punch filled with mum and dad's belongings along with
04:36Peter's collections nothing under here and we have just one day to sort and sift B has a mountain to
04:46climb in her quest for uncovering enough items for auction while Robin is on the hunt for potential
04:52treasures in need of attention no I don't think they're gonna be worth much right yeah well let's
04:59hope B has some better luck in the hallway didn't expect to see that let's hope this is a good stamp album
05:09let's have a look so what we're really looking for is the penny black yes this is exactly what we want
05:24the penny black was the first ever adhesive stamp that we had in 1840 but it only lasted a year because
05:33it was so hard to see that red cancellation ink that was put on top of that black stamp the penny
05:39black revolutionized mail delivery by standardizing postage costs and simplifying the mailing process but
05:47the easy removal of the red ink meant it could be reused hence the reason for its limited run I would
05:54say an auction without having a proper look we're probably in the region of 100 to 150 pounds that's
06:01a nice little find these two albums of Victorian used stamps were dad Peters pride and joy and are a
06:08fantastic start onwards to hopefully find more auction gold oh look I think I know what this is
06:21yes it is so these are fantastic they are Mason and Hamlin of Boston so American traveling organs you could
06:33literally take it on the back of your horse and cart in the 19th century and into the 20th century
06:39and preachers would have it and they would turn up at their congregation they would preach and they
06:44would sing and they would play and they actually won the Paris exhibition in 1867 they got first prize so
06:53they were completely sought after founded in 1854 with their groundbreaking organ harmonium
07:00Mason and Mason and Hamlin quickly earned a reputation for world-class organs and pianos so much so
07:07that French composer Maurice Ravel chose their pianos for his debut American tour in 1928
07:14ah here he is it's the traveling organeer why didn't I think of that well what have you found here what do you think
07:26there's a couple of crucial components missing by the looks of things a little bit yeah the pedal boards
07:32are normally attached to the organ bellows right some some rods but these ones are just uh you know
07:38loose sounds like a lot of work because it could be really sellable it could also be really broken
07:48I have every faith in you Robin I'll give it a go but oh I don't I could can't make you any promises
07:55no that's fine the good thing about these little travel organs is oh they travel so I'll see you in
08:03a minute thanks very much it's a lovely find and could sell well at auction but it needs some of
08:09Robin's expertise first better get the al fresco workstation up and running and set to work reviving
08:16the tired traveling organ the little blue van is ready and waiting packed with tools gadgets and all
08:25sorts to revive tired bygones so what's the plan Robin doesn't play anything these bellows needs to go
08:36up and down to feed air through this organ for it to play a sound and they're operated by these pedals
08:42well tell a lie they're currently not operated by these pedals so really my first task is to reconnect
08:48these pedal boards to the bellows of the organ now the only thing I've got in the van which I think I
08:56can manipulate into that sort of shape is a bit of aluminium welding filler rod well let's hope they work
09:03B will struggle to sell it if you can't get it working use those pliers to bend it around 90 degrees
09:13happy with that that'll go in the pedal board end and that shuts down on that to keep it in so
09:21that looks pretty good very clever
09:25now this rod is a bit too flexible it's doing the job the bellows are going up and down but
09:33in an ideal world I'd have a steel rod there
09:36that's not cutting it at all looks like it's back to the drawing board I'm afraid
09:42while Robin is overcoming his obstacles Dave and Diane have faced their own too
09:51they've suffered double heartbreak dad Peter's passing and then just months earlier
09:58Dave's youngest son Dean had a fatal car accident
10:02in October October 17th last year Dean had an accident in his car I won't lie it has been horrendous
10:11these last months and it just makes you realise that life is very precious it's not just something you
10:18can just go yeah I'm alive in tomorrow you can't just take it for granted and in fact Dean always
10:25I taught him how to ride motorbikes and mopeds and bits and pieces and it's ironic that he passed away in a car
10:33but on the front of his motorbike on his fairings he always put YOLO on it so YOLO is you only live once
10:40and he always believed that he believed that if you want to do something you go and do it
10:45it's just so difficult watching David and you know David and his family going through all of this
10:53obviously we've you know I've lost my nephew um I've lost my dad my brother's very ill and
11:00and just being part of that it's just it's just been heartbreaking
11:04it's been exceptionally tough for Dave and Diane's big family between them they have eight children
11:13and ten grandchildren ranging from two to eight years old yeah for me personally um I want to
11:20do something nice for the grandchildren my grandchildren dad's great grandchildren so
11:25we can all just get together and have a holiday because a lot of grief is the way we coped is being
11:30together Dave and Diane loved family camping when they were little the money raised from the sale of
11:36their parents beloved collections will go towards recreating those trips with their grandchildren
11:42with Dean's wife I think for her to go camping in the first instance will be a big experience for her so
11:51I'd like to be somewhere local at first and there's a fantastic campsite in Southampton making new happy
11:58memories is vital after going through so much tragedy eventually I would love it I want to get everyone
12:04abroad perhaps France probably gone Eurotunnel because that'd be exciting for the children as well
12:10and it's up to us to help make that special holiday a reality each room of their parents home is packed
12:18full of items just waiting to be discovered and box upon box for Bea to get stuck into
12:24there's plenty in here the spare room looks ripe for a rummage
12:30I am a sucker for a wicker basket and looks like we've got quite a few oh
12:37ah not just any old wicker basket we've got a beautiful little picnic set and by the looks of
12:45things I don't think it's ever been used and considering we've got a nice little group lot here
12:55we can definitely make this 30 to 40 pounds at least gathering momentum B and it looks like the
13:04spare room could be stacked with more treasures closed box gonna have to open it and have a look so this
13:12as soon as you see it it screams typically French so having these sort of gilt brass figures up here with
13:18this alabaster almost plinth base is very typical of 19th century coming into the 20th century French
13:26clock making I think we'd get certainly between 30 and 40 pounds for it I like that and a nice 19th
13:34century period piece for a small room it's packed quite the punch let's check in on Robin with the
13:44tricksy traveling organ can you play chopsticks it's quite hard work the louder sound isn't coming
13:55from the keys it's coming from the air leaking from the bellows unfortunately and to do a proper job of
14:02this would require me to completely remove the bellows soak them all in warm water until the glue softens
14:08enough to remove them fix every single hole I wish I had the time to do this justice to restore this
14:14to its former glory so it played on every pedal stroke but I just haven't what I can do however
14:21is close it up and make it look as good as possible really make it shine Robin's starting his cleanup with
14:31some methylated spirit it's doing a great job so far even a really nice clean surface ready for waxing
14:39the wax not only protects the wood but gives the traveling organ and lustrous sheen I think that
14:46looks great the wax has finished that off perfectly our focus now is to sell this traveling organ as a
14:53decorative piece or as a project to a prospective buyer and now he's finished waxing Robin can look for
15:01his next project now Dave has found some of dad Peter's collections for Bea to cast her eye over
15:08so I'll come round here to have a cup of tea with dad dad was sat over there in his chair as you know
15:12he is and I was sat here and he said to me put your hands out put yours out anyway there you go
15:18yeah right oh my goodness what is that wait have a look hopefully it's got as much value as it does
15:26wait feels like pocket watches yeah yeah but they can't all the pocket watches all pocket watches I
15:34believe there's around 40 odd you are joking are they all silver yeah I think there's a couple of um
15:41gold ones in there brilliant I think there's quite a few Victorian ones I imagine that's quite common
15:47well it they're more collectible if they're sort of Georgian or if they've got a name on them that
15:54is quite rare you know um or particular silversmith or watchmaker so there are a lot of factors oh
16:00right you know interesting in the late 17th century style icon King Charles the second turned the pocket
16:07watch into a must-have by debuting the newly introduced gentleman's waistcoat as the perfect home for this
16:13revolutionary timepiece pocket watches they come in and out of fashion but they're strong again so 40
16:22say minimum minimum we're looking at here is sort of 450 pounds worth of pocket watches minimum and
16:30I'm sure there'll be some examples in here that will be standalone what a find B will split these into
16:36different lots to maximize their value at auction was your mum into all of this no no no no no no no
16:43it would be a case with mum dad would if he went down the auctions he'd come back and mum would go oh god
16:50Peter what you got in here so obviously the money that we're hopefully going to make at the auction
16:55there's a holiday I promise you I will do my very very best I really really will because I want to
17:02raise some money for you to enjoy your time together yeah brilliant thanks very much and Robin's doing
17:09his best raise as much money as possible too and hoping the garage will come up trumps to the untrained
17:16eye this would look like a rusty pile of junk but this is a pile of rusty Morris junk and judging by the
17:25age of it it's probably from a Morris 8 this wheel once belonged to Peter's pride and joy his Morris
17:328 car introduced in the 1930s the model was once a bestseller and the most popular British car at the
17:39time good spot Robin hello hello you what are you doing out here playing in the rusty metal yes boys and
17:47their toys this is essentially all the running gear of Morris 8 I reckon Wow so I thought the wheel would
17:55be quite a nice thing to clean up but will it do well in a local auction house that isn't specialists on
18:00cars I guess the shinier I can make this wheel the better I like this idea Robin good find we'll just
18:07have to wait and see won't we but if bees unsure whether it will be popular at auction don't spend too
18:14long on it what a lucky little fine that was first things first though before I paint it got to give
18:21it a bit of a clean and the little blue van has just the tool for the job for stage one all I'm going
18:27to use is this wire brush to get the worst of the pitting off all the loose paint just like cleaning your
18:35teeth get that plaque out blimey I'm glad you're not my dentist while he scrubs away in
18:43doors bees continuing her search in one of the bedrooms oh I'm always hoping to find Narnia one
18:54of these days never mind about the lions and the witches what lies above the wardrobe but look on top
19:01going up what are these ah so I think these are a collection of Victorian and later shaving jugs or
19:16shaving scuttles they were called these were really collectible and a gentleman sort of toy if you will
19:23something that was his in the bathroom something that was a delicate piece as well and what you can
19:29see is they've all got this lovely decoration emerging in the late 19th century the shaving
19:36scuttle or shaving mug kept water hot perfect for the groomed Victorian gent I reckon you could get
19:44maybe 10 15 pounds for them so it's worth a go keep going B there's still lots to find back at the van
19:53Robin's finished scrubbing the Morris 8 wheel the wheels come up really nicely now I've got the worst of
19:59the surface rust off and now it's ready for a bit of renovating paint now if I was doing this inside I'd do
20:06in a well-ventilated area and I'd wear a mask but because I'm outside it's lovely not much wind blowing
20:12and I'm not much risk of breathing this in that's as maybe but it's always best to wear a mask Robin even
20:19outside a little bit of matte black paint look at that straight away that's starting to look really good
20:28well that's the first coat done it's looking really nice I wish I could get a spray paint that does that
20:35for me no get out of town you look fab for 21 looks 50 years younger this wheel while the wheel dries in
20:44the Sun bees found something inside nice bit of furniture this so these are what is known as
20:52monk's benches so they were made for the monks in the monasteries that didn't have much space in
20:57their rooms so they had to have functional pieces of furniture and I reckon we can get between 30 and
21:0450 pounds for it glad we found this the monk's bench can join these finds of the two albums of Victorian
21:13used stamps four wicker baskets the 19th century French clock the big bag of gents pocket watches and
21:20the shaving mugs also going into the catalogue are Robin's finds of the travelling organ and the
21:26original Morris 8 wheel that are both still under repair but there's plenty more places to explore
21:33that hopefully house more of Peter's collections let's see what's hiding in here oh my goodness
21:46paradise for the miniature car enthusiast
21:51this is the ultimate man cave I don't think I have ever seen so many matchbox cars I love the
22:02stories as well because there's a real kind of homely feel to it so the chap that started it for
22:08Leslie products his name was Jack O'Dell and he was making larger scale models already
22:14not under the matchbox name and then his daughter went off to school one day and the school said you
22:20can't bring in toys that are bigger than a matchbox and she told this to her dad when she was quite
22:25upset so he said I've got an idea which is where the matchbox name comes from by 1968 Lesney was the
22:34largest die-cast toy manufacturer in the world and just a year later the output had soared to a million
22:41units per day so how are you getting on ah hello so you found the small collection this is unbelievable
22:48I have never seen a collection like it that's amazing isn't it isn't it Dave estimates there
22:54to be around two and a half to three thousand models in here blimey he'll get a toy and he'll open up and
23:01he'll go oh that's got this how do you not got that one he goes yeah but if you look at this one
23:05the steering wheel is a different color but it's those things that make the really valuable ones
23:10super valuable and the other thing I've noticed we've got loads of these wonderful blister packs
23:15now these came in in the 80s right but what makes some of them super valuable is those really early the
23:22original matchbox boxes you know the little ones and I can't see any of those are they yellow they are so
23:29do you mean these I absolutely do mean those oh my goodness this is exactly what we're after
23:37because these are the super early ones from the 50s the originals because they say a Lesney product
23:45could we have struck motoring gold with so many cars B will have to split the collection of nearly
23:52three thousand models into a number of separate lots each making anywhere between 30 pounds and 150
24:00pounds there's so many bits and pieces it's well if we tried to keep them all at home like that I'd fill
24:12my attic up and Jules there's just so so many little collections really quite interesting things as well
24:20that I remember dad buying from the local auction house now let's find Robin hello some little
24:30stalls or side tables they're quite interesting a little bit tired though might take him out of
24:36the van see what the boss says and just when you won't be she turns up what do you think of this I think
24:43it's very cute yeah what is it a stool or a table I I still height and size isn't it but is it sellable
24:49yeah I mean definitely only 20th century though what if I was to tell you that there's another three of
24:55these in the garage that makes it a lot more sellable a little group lot yes problem is they've all got
25:02this sort of staining on top so what have you got in mind to make these stools auction ready a
25:08little bit of a cleanup keep a little bit of the patina okay maybe more sellable I think there's a
25:13nice little group lot there cool well do you want to help me carry the other three out uh not really
25:19Robin looks like you're on your own you'd better make a start getting these mahogany stools looking
25:26their best to clean these up I'm going to use methylated spirits and a microfiber cloth and that'll get
25:33the worst of it off Robin knows all the tricks to bring a lovely shiny gleam sometimes with wood less
25:40is more and really what I run on here is less grime to give it more luster and after a good bit of
25:48elbow grease we're ready for a light oil finish which feeds the wood and enhances the color and grain that
25:55looks great and I'm really really pleased well done Robin and they could now fetch between 30 and 50
26:02pounds at auction but first don't forget the other three while he continues where's B I hope that
26:11Robin's working hard if not don't worry he is there's still so much exploring to do and Diane has left out
26:21the family jewels anything catching your eye B got some really unusual bits of jewelry here
26:29hi you found the jewelry I have and what a collection now I'm guessing all of this wasn't Peter's wasn't
26:37your dad no no it's his mum so my man your nan yeah right okay so this is a collection of ingots just on
26:45their own you're not going to be about a hundred pounds auction estimate 80 to 120 okay so there's
26:50value in silver still it's very strong yeah those silver ingot pendants could be a nice little owner
26:56what else can we find there's not much gold here is that I can show you something okay a couple of
27:05weeks ago I was looking at the box yeah lifted up the lid and this mirror fell off and fell forward
27:10and on the back there was this box oh my it's glued on it's glued on and it must have been glued on here
27:17and it's obviously come unstuck maybe with the heat we've had yeah and oh my goodness there's some gold
27:22gold oh my a secret stash of gold oh my goodness what a clever lady she was she hit her gold we love a
27:32secret stash that's a weighty piece and that looks gold to me as well three seven five so that's a nine
27:40carriage yeah so that alone is going to be at auction six to eight hundred pounds just that one
27:48yeah oh my goodness what a fantastic find there could be further lots totaling big bucks in this box
27:56that little type in there just that at auction is 120 to 180 pounds wow and I'm glad that mirror fell
28:06off are you happy for all of this to go to auction yes I am I've there were some other pieces in here
28:12which I really liked yeah and I remember my nan wearing so I've taken them for myself absolutely
28:18but a lot of this I mean I wouldn't wear it and I would just put the box in the bottom of the
28:23wardrobe or in the cupboard I would rather it went to somebody who would enjoy it it's always hard
28:31parting with special heirlooms but it's all going to such a good cause for that big family holiday the
28:39day is coming to an end and Robin has found some steel rods for the traveling organ just in the nick of
28:44time although the diameter is a tiny bit thicker than the aluminium it's nice and stiff and I can
28:51use this as a template or pattern to get the bends in the steel which is a lot harder to bend and a lot
28:58harder to cut so I only want to do it once good thing you had a go with the aluminium earlier Robin
29:04how about that hey genius that works much better come on give us your best Liberace
29:16oh dear terrible musician great restorer you said it you can't be good at everything Robin but even with
29:30holes in the bellows unfixed at least it makes a sound now it looks great it makes a noise and
29:38hopefully it'll go to a great home and with all your hard work it could fetch up to 80 pounds now
29:44that's music to my ears with time running short B has got her eagle eye mode firmly switched on
29:51and wants to find one last lot to take to auction oh wow another collection
30:01look at all of those another secret stash this time a collection of sci-fi comics from the 1970s
30:13oh my goodness it goes on and on what we're looking for with something like this is condition
30:21that's where the value is you know if they are mint which I have to say these pretty much are they look
30:29like they've never been read or even opened they've had slight discoloration but you know these are from
30:36the 70s so for a mass collection like this I would say auction estimate we're probably looking in the
30:44region of 50 to 80 pounds and there'll be people out there that have a number of these and not the
30:51full collection so hopefully we'll get somebody that buys the whole lot because there's two in
30:55here they don't already have this bumper lot will join the day's other finds including Robin's four
31:01mahogany stools and bees discoveries the collection of gents pocket watches and the rather versatile
31:07monk's bench
31:11paint's all dry look at that beautiful looks 50 years younger ready for auction
31:19meanwhile Robin's restoration on the Morris 8 wheel has worked wonders it's now auction ready and has an
31:26estimate of 15 to 25 pounds time to shut up shop what I love big daddy absolutely brilliant absolutely
31:36fantastic really enjoyed that well thanks so much for having us it's an absolute pleasure hasn't it
31:41has been brilliant loved it and have you ever been to an auction before probably about 30 years ago a bit
31:47different now lots of online bidding and this one will feel a little bit different because it'd be more
31:52emotional for you yeah but we are here to do everything we can and Robin will be right next
31:57to you won't you I'll hold your hand while we watch be working magic brilliant we're really looking
32:01forward to it well we'll see you there thank you great work everyone you know Robin I've never seen
32:11so many much box cars in my life a whole shed for a whole shed for after a whirlwind day of finding
32:22items it's now over to be to nab some high value bids at the auction a few weeks later we're deep in the
32:32Oxfordshire countryside in the village of Tetsworth located on an ancient road that was once a busy coaching
32:39route oh oh no your heels oh no I'm gonna have to tiptoe be you're so glam we're at the Swan at
32:51Tetsworth no stranger to majesty Elizabeth the first was rumored to have stayed here in the 16th century
32:58a fitting stage for our queen of the rostrum chief auctioneer B I've not got that problem okay there
33:11we go as we set up shop the heat is on to raise as much money as we can for Dave and Diane's big family
33:20camping getaway they've traveled over 90 miles to say goodbye to their parents collections hello hello
33:28what we got here well do you know yes yeah amazing what you can actually do a job with that so how are
33:36you guys feeling about the auction today um it's exciting we're dragging down auctions all the time
33:41when we're really yeah it's like second home to you knowing that things things that he collected over
33:47the years are going to go back to the auction and yeah he'd love it today Bea's hoping to rake in the
