00:00Kathleen.
00:05Bill.
00:06My dear.
00:07Hi.
00:08Hi.
00:09I've got something interesting going on here.
00:12All right.
00:13Yeah.
00:15You know Jonathan and Drew, the brothers?
00:18The Scott brothers?
00:19The what?
00:20Scott brothers.
00:21I know who they are.
00:22Yeah, you know who they are.
00:23I do.
00:24They're here.
00:26And I want to introduce you, but I don't want you to scream.
00:29And no, no flailing.
00:33Okay.
00:34Why are they here?
00:35Hello?
00:36Yeah.
00:37Hello?
00:38Come on in.
00:39Hey, how are you?
00:40Come on in.
00:41Hey, what's happening?
00:42Hey, hey, hey.
00:43Hi.
00:44Nice to see you.
00:45This is Kathleen.
00:46How are you?
00:47Pleasure.
00:48Good.
00:49So do you know what we do?
00:50I do know what you do.
00:51How do you know what they do?
00:52Because I've seen their show.
00:53Yeah?
00:54You like the show?
00:55I do like their show.
00:56Well, here's what I've got planned.
00:5814 years that you and I have worked together.
01:00As you've seen, I don't give any bonuses.
01:03You know, is he always this brutally honest?
01:07Always.
01:08Your kitchen needs some work.
01:10It needs help.
01:11It needs a lot of help.
01:12Does it?
01:13It's in bad shape.
01:14And help has arrived.
01:15After 14 years, I think your home could use a little polishing up.
01:21Just a little.
01:22Really?
01:23I'm overwhelmed.
01:24I think it's just an incredible thing that he's doing for me.
01:30Five, four, three, two, one, here we go.
01:43You've played a million different characters and a million different roles.
01:47You know, a lawyer.
01:48Actually, you won Emmys for your role in Boston Legal.
01:51You've obviously played a captain of a Starship Enterprise.
01:54A cop.
01:55Oh, yeah.
01:56TJ Hooker.
01:57Is there anything that you've played that stands out when people see you?
02:01Is there something they shout out?
02:02Something that inspires people?
02:04What would you say is the most common response?
02:06Probably Captain Kirk.
02:08I suppose the most indelible thing I've done for the public is Star Trek.
02:15When you were on Star Trek, did you have that fascination with the idea of us expanding beyond Earth and traveling galaxies and exploring?
02:24My big moment, I was a city boy in Montreal and my parents sent me to a camp in the woods and I saw the stars for the first time really with no light pollution.
02:38Right.
02:39And I remember sitting on a log looking up and I fell over backwards.
02:44I was so astonished and they began to understand how awesome everything is.
02:50As I got older, I began to see more and more miraculous things beyond my can to understand.
02:57For example, you and me doing this marvelous thing, I feel so grateful that I'm able to do for Kathleen.
03:10Kathleen, she comes in at 9 o'clock or 10 o'clock and stays to 6 and then sometimes later and sometimes takes over my whole life because I've got to go on location.
03:24So I depend on her for a great deal more and more as the years go by as I see that she is motivated by love for me as I am for her.
03:38I am really so fond of her and her characteristics and her personality and her abilities and her devotion and her excellence.
03:50So she's just a terrific human being.
03:53It's just up here.
03:55Okay.
03:56A little further and I'll tell you when to pull over.
03:58Okay.
03:59Okay.
04:00And pull over now.
04:01When Captain Kirk tells me to pull over, I pull over.
04:03Right.
04:04My hope is Kathleen comes back to a place that she lived in for about five years, I believe.
04:11It's her home.
04:13Her and her husband's home.
04:15She has the same feeling of security that I have coming into my home.
04:21After you guys.
04:23Oh, it's going through my mind is wow.
04:24First, there's no way this is real.
04:26And then it's like, I can't believe this is happening.
04:30They're amazing.
04:31I've been a fan.
04:32I've watched the show for a long time.
04:34I love the color.
04:35It's a nice color, but it's really dark.
04:37Like the track light.
04:38It's really dark.
04:42Knowing Kathleen and what she's told you over the years, because I'm assuming she's been complaining about her kitchen.
04:48She will not stop talking about how much she needs a new kitchen.
04:53This needs work here just for flow, because it's not bad.
04:56It's nice.
04:57The color choice is nice.
04:58You can see she has a nice design eye.
05:00You can tell this doesn't work for her, because you can't use the end of the table.
05:03So every time they have guests over, they would have to be sliding this all the way out.
05:06I never thought of that.
05:07Kathleen is a wonderful, professional lady who gave up a job with a large company, come to work for me on an individual basis.
05:20He helped me get out of a very unhappy place of where I was going to work every day and just hating it, to a place where all of a sudden it was like,
05:27Oh my God, I don't know what I'm doing, but this is way more exciting.
05:31Move that chair, Drew, and let's rotate this and just see what it would look like.
05:34Look what she's got on the wall.
05:35I thought it would be a painting of you.
05:37Five years before I got this job, I just started taking horseback riding lessons and became obsessed.
05:42And when I learned about this job being available with Bill, you know, got to do a little research into writing cover letters.
05:48And I found, you know, how long he's been riding and how his love of horses.
05:53And I thought, ha, we have something in common.
05:55I have a charity called the Hollywood Charity Horseshop.
05:59And I said, you've got to help me with this, which she did.
06:02And for the last 14 years, we've kind of have a book on how to make a horse show.
06:07It's quite an arduous month of work that she now does by herself.
06:14Oh, careful on the glass.
06:16Why does she need as big a table as that?
06:19I don't think she should. Yeah.
06:21She is an integral part of my life.
06:24Her help has been extraordinary.
06:27I absolutely love him.
06:29He and I are a week apart our birthdays.
06:31So I think we're very similar people in terms of our personalities.
06:35I don't come from an organized life as an actor.
06:40Okay, out there.
06:41She's on top of all the things I'm doing.
06:43That kind of devotion, loyalty, attention to detail.
06:48I've been part of his life for so long and keep his life running for so long that I just don't really think about it anymore.
06:54And he's always so kind and he's always so thoughtful.
06:57And I just think this is an incredible gift for him to be able to do this for us.
07:02I think Jack's going to love it.
07:04I think he's looking at it all as kind of a great opportunity to see what might happen in our kitchen,
07:10to see how that might be different.
07:12Because since he cooks every night, that's kind of his happy space to decompress from his day.
07:17This could be life changing for us.
07:19This could change everything.
07:21And then I won't end up stabbing my husband with a knife in the kitchen while I'm trying to get around him.
07:26I don't like the quality of the wood in the cabinets.
07:29Yeah.
07:30It's manufactured.
07:31Is that pressed wood?
07:32Yeah.
07:33This looks a little cheap.
07:34It's like a malamine finish.
07:36What I really don't like is they're only 36 inches deep.
07:39You've got this soffit here that's sort of closing everything in, making it feel smaller than it should be.
07:46And there's this lighting ring that isn't even lit.
07:50Oh, they have the new recessed lights in the ceiling and then they kept this old track.
07:53That's what I'm saying.
07:54Yeah.
07:55The track is ugly.
07:57Doesn't this totally feel like the transport deck?
08:00Yeah.
08:01I think we need to beam this kitchen out of here.
08:06You know what they have a benefit here is these windows, because it's harder to change windows on a condo.
08:12They don't always allow it because there needs to be continuity.
08:15But the height at the bottom of the window would work for countertop height.
08:20So we could actually run cabinetry or even counters all the way across there and give her way more function.
08:26Yeah.
08:27That would be interesting, yeah.
08:28I also don't like it when the appliances are not built in.
08:31The fact that you can see the side of the fridge, it just looks like it's hanging out.
08:34Right.
08:35We can design it so that we have all of the appliances fully built in.
08:39Style-wise in here, it's just really dark.
08:41But does she like sort of that rustic or equestrian feel?
08:44Yes.
08:45I think the colors that she's chosen, the greens, are rustic.
08:50This is not rustic.
08:52No.
08:53Along with changing everything, the floors, you know, it's a nice look, but it's a nice look.
09:01Yeah.
09:02It doesn't have the quality that we want to add to her house.
09:07Maybe we could change the floor.
09:08Yeah.
09:09This is a cheap laminate.
09:10You can see it's just large sheets of laminate, so we can give something a lot nicer.
09:14My hope is she'll look at the new things that you guys have done and say, I'm even more comfortable.
09:23I'm even more at ease.
09:25I'm even more efficient in this place I call home.
09:30Now that I'm looking at this, through your eyes, I can see that it really needs a lot of work.
09:38Yeah.
09:39It needs you and your imagination.
09:42And given Kathleen's creativity, she's going to love what you're going to do.
09:48Well, let's do this.
09:49Why don't I handle getting all of the stuff packed up, getting that all out, and then
09:54if you're good, maybe tomorrow we'll jump in and start swinging sledgehammers.
09:58Is there a chance that during demo, instead of using sledgehammers, you can give us one
10:02of the classic Captain Kirk drop kicks on the wall?
10:07The running drop kick.
10:08Oh, run up and drop kick.
10:10And drop kick it.
10:11Yeah.
10:12The whole...
10:13Yeah, exactly.
10:14What have I done?
10:15Let it, let it, let it go, go, go, go, go, go.
10:22It's all systems go.
10:24Kathleen and her husband, Jack, have moved into a nearby rental, and Bill got here bright
10:28and early, rolling up his sleeve for his assistant and friend of 14 years.
10:32Another drawer.
10:34Working with Bill is a dream come true.
10:36I mean, not only is he a Hollywood legend, but this guy is 94 years old, and he's tearing
10:41Kathleen's kitchen apart like someone half his age.
10:43You could get hurt doing this.
10:44You could.
10:45Go watch your shins.
10:46And not just that, he puts so much thought into whatever we throw at him, and we're talking
10:50like deep thoughts.
10:52Demolishing anything means the end of it.
10:58Relationship, friendship, a house.
11:02You see these magnificent buildings being blown up, and they fall in, and it's gone.
11:10It's gone forever.
11:11And people of one kind, another, that was their place.
11:15And now, boom.
11:17That's all it takes.
11:19That sledgehammer is heavy, and it bounces in your hands.
11:23And so if you hit something and it bounces back.
11:26Uh, Jonathan, beam me up.
11:28Oh, my gosh.
11:29That bounced back on me.
11:31Oh, no, no, no.
11:32It didn't do that very well.
11:34All right.
11:35So, if you ever saw Tom Cruise in Mission Impossible when he's climbing up the building.
11:40Oh, yeah, climbing the wall?
11:41That's these.
11:42It's impossible.
11:43Yeah, totally impossible.
11:44Mission Impossible.
11:46Here we go.
11:51We got a whole mirror, guys.
11:53It's watching a professional at work.
11:56They do exactly what to do and how to make it work and where to put it.
12:00Swing around?
12:01Yep.
12:03You know, it's watching like watching a great piano player.
12:06The hands don't seem to belong.
12:08They're not even looking at time for their hands.
12:12I could have done that.
12:13You just had to ask.
12:15Too late now.
12:16Oh, okay.
12:21Does that remind you of, um, what's his name?
12:24The actor, uh, coming through the wall?
12:26Jackie, Jack Nicholson?
12:28Uh, Jackie Nicholson.
12:29Here's Drew!
12:32There you go.
12:33The beginnings of open concept.
12:36And so they're in the midst of a very professional work that they're doing.
12:43They know exactly what they're doing.
12:47It's a delight to see.
12:49All right.
12:50When you look at this.
12:51Yeah.
12:52Good news or bad news?
12:53What do you think?
12:54Well, it's...
12:55It's grotesque.
12:56No, no, not Jonathan.
12:57At the top of the ceiling.
12:58It's like looking at a skeleton of a body.
13:01You know, you're seeing the bones.
13:03You don't see the...
13:04But this thing here really annoys me.
13:07The back's back?
13:08And you've got one stalwart post here.
13:11Is this not enough to support that?
13:13So...
13:14Is the correct word, joist?
13:16So, yeah, you're right.
13:17The joist up above here, you can see that they've actually fully cut the joist here for this penetration to go through.
13:23So this is supplying heat and cooling.
13:24Oh, they've cut that whole thing.
13:26Yeah.
13:27Now, but the actual joist structure is up higher, which the good news is technically this pipe could be all the way up in the floor joist above.
13:35A little space up there.
13:36The downside is over here, look what they did again.
13:39They've completely cut that joist.
13:42And so now that's...
13:44So that weakens the whole thing.
13:45Yeah.
13:46I mean, is that bad?
13:48It's not bad right now because they have a wall underneath it supporting it.
13:52If we were to remove this...
13:54So they knew when they did that they were going to have this support here.
13:57Yeah, exactly.
13:58But still...
13:59Was that worked out like...
14:01Is that mathematical?
14:03Okay, we got that.
14:04We gotta have that.
14:05We gotta have this.
14:06Well, it should be because an engineer should approve something.
14:08But what they've done cutting those joists is not permitted because there's a proper way to support if you do that.
14:13Wow.
14:14The good news is this soffit can all go away.
14:17This we can take right up so we'll have full height in the rest of the kitchen here.
14:20Yeah, that'll be great.
14:21All right, keep doing your thing.
14:23The universe is in chaos.
14:27Change is the single most universal thing.
14:34That means things are changing and we humans seem to want to cling to what was.
14:43Don't disturb anything because I won't know.
14:45I don't know what the new change will bring.
14:52There you show off.
14:53You've taught me well.
14:54So here's a whole new change in her living quarters.
14:59How will she react?
15:01Will she say, I like my refrigerator there?
15:04We don't know.
15:05They're gonna talk.
15:07Oh yeah, you better stop.
15:10You know they don't wanna talk about it.
15:14Today while the crew is busy finishing demo of Kathleen's, I need Bill to sign off on the finishes for her new kitchen.
15:20And that means I need to get some solid one-on-one time with Captain Kirk.
15:24Yeah, come on in, guys.
15:26All right.
15:27It's just one guy.
15:28You just get me this time.
15:29It's a mission I have been waiting for since I was a kid watching all those Star Trek reruns.
15:34Can I just nerd out for one second here and just say how cool your office is?
15:39Is it really?
15:40Oh my gosh, look at all the memorabilia.
15:42Well, I don't go to offices, so I don't know.
15:44It's like...
15:45Always make them come to you.
15:47Well, there you are, you see.
15:48We do have a little bit of work to do.
15:49We need to pick some finishes for the kitchen, and I am trying to figure out right now,
15:54because some of these materials, the oak cabinets and whatnot, they're custom,
15:57so I'm trying to make sure that we can get them in time to put them in.
16:00Look at the richness of this.
16:02Yeah.
16:03Is this granite?
16:05No.
16:06This is actually porcelain.
16:07So this is man-made.
16:08What is porcelain?
16:09So it's like a clay tile, like a, you know...
16:12It's a clay that's baked in man-made ovens.
16:16Exactly.
16:17And then we...
16:18These are basically graphics that are added to give you the vaning.
16:20No!
16:21How do you add them?
16:22So this is actually, if you look here, there's a thin layer that is printed onto this,
16:28and then it's glazed over top so that it looks like it's a part of the stone.
16:31So do they make this in huge kilns?
16:34Massive kilns.
16:35You get the beauty of what would look like marble or quartzite or something, but not the vulnerability.
16:41So now with this...
16:42Oh!
16:43Does it...
16:44No staining.
16:45You cannot stain it.
16:46It's good with hot heat.
16:47The biggest benefit is you never have to reseal it, because natural stone you have to reseal
16:53every three to six months.
16:54Do you know what Kathleen would lean toward as far as the colors that she liked?
16:59I would go for lightness.
17:01Agreed.
17:02And this is the lightest here, but its lack of detail disturbs me.
17:09So this is, I think, better for her.
17:13This would be my preference.
17:14Mine too.
17:15Okay, good.
17:16And if a couple of Canadians like it, it's got to be good.
17:18Yes, exactly.
17:19What about for the actual cabinetry?
17:20Because we can do a whitewash to keep it lighter.
17:24I agree with you.
17:25We want to try and keep things lighter in there.
17:27But we can also go with a white oak.
17:29We can go...
17:30This is rift sawn.
17:31It's nice, but it doesn't have the more rustic character that you would see with, you know,
17:35the not...
17:36See, I think this is light enough and got character in it.
17:39Would you keep things like...
17:40Not that deep.
17:41We can have some...
17:42Why would you keep that deep?
17:44Some people like to go really rustic.
17:46Yeah.
17:47I...
17:48Sometimes I feel like it almost looks like a flaw.
17:50It is a flaw.
17:51Yeah.
17:52Well, some people like that.
17:53They think it's a real character.
17:54I absolutely love how committed and genuinely interested Bill is in making this kitchen perfect
17:59for Kathleen.
18:00No detail gets past him.
18:02Is that natural or...
18:03Yep.
18:04That's out of...
18:05Who could form that?
18:07An insect?
18:08No, that's the knot.
18:09And so when they slice it, sometimes in the knot of a tree...
18:12Comes out.
18:13It gets loose, so it comes out.
18:14We can get these doors without those kind of deep contusions.
18:19What is your personal taste, by the way?
18:21Yes.
18:22You like rust more.
18:23Yeah.
18:24Okay.
18:25So I feel like we're in pretty good shape.
18:26The one thing I want...
18:27So when we were doing the demolition, I know we were concerned about how we're going to
18:33open things up.
18:34Yeah.
18:35This will be the dining space here.
18:36So whatever kind of table we decide to put in here, this is the dining area.
18:39I did find out from the engineer that there is a load here that we have to still support,
18:45so we can't remove this wall completely, which actually we don't need to because we need
18:49wall...
18:50You mean there's a brace?
18:51Yeah.
18:52Because upstairs there's another wall about right here upstairs, and they're actually
18:57using the support of that wall off of this.
18:59So my thought here is, instead of opening the whole thing up, and we do need some wall space
19:03for cabinetry, maybe we leave one section like this where we have lowers and uppers here,
19:09like that.
19:10Right.
19:11So we would have an opening here and an opening here of the same size.
19:14I think you'll have more light, more connectivity, and it'll look like an architectural feature,
19:20as opposed to why did they just leave a little section of wall there?
19:23Right.
19:24I think it's great.
19:25We're going to give Kathleen's condo a glow up and bring the design and functionality
19:28into the 21st century.
19:30It starts by swapping those old-fashioned floors with new light oak hardwood and losing
19:34that dated mirror wall.
19:36Bill wants those old cheap cabinets gone, so we'll replace them with beautiful rustic
19:40oak, and the lowers will be topped with a calming earth-toned porcelain that boasts
19:44bold veining.
19:45The range, hood, sink, and fridge will be replaced with new versions, and moved accordingly to
19:50make for a more efficient layout.
19:52With the kitchen done, we need the right lighting to show it off, so we'll even out that ceiling,
19:56knock out the old soffits, and provide dimming-controlled recessed lighting, adding to the comfort,
20:01style, and overall vibe of the design.
20:03In the dining room, we'll replace the table with a space-saving, trendy banquette, perfect
20:08for Kathleen to wow guests.
20:10While the living room will get elegant new furniture to match the overall feel Kathleen
20:14wants, and a new fireplace with a hand-hewn barn-beam mantle that will lean into the whole
20:19motif of the home.
20:21Someone's calling me.
20:22One sec.
20:23Oh, well, let's interfere with.
20:24Hello?
20:25Good news.
20:26Oh, what's the news?
20:28We can get the rustic white oak cabinetry.
20:31Oh, we can?
20:32Okay, good.
20:33Yes, we can.
20:34Amazing.
20:35All right, thank you.
20:36Yep.
20:37Bye.
20:38Was that call from Mars?
20:39Yeah, Eve on my design team.
20:40She's on Mars right now.
20:41No, I got this ages ago, so it's an actual Bluetooth replica of the original communicator
20:46from your show.
20:47I've had this for years.
20:48No kidding.
20:49It is an operative original communicator.
20:52Okay, I'm going to do it.
20:53Go for it.
20:54I haven't done this in 60 years.
20:56Kirk here.
20:57I thought I was calling Jonathan.
21:00Who are you?
21:02And what do you do about this?
21:04I'm Eva.
21:06We're going to get even with you, Eva.
21:08Nice to talk to you.
21:09Good job.
21:10Communication terminated.
21:11Oh, she hung up on me.
21:12All right.
21:13People tend to do that with you.
21:14Yeah, all the time.
21:16You got the good.
21:19I got it right here.
21:20Now, put it in right away, will you?
21:22Because it's got a very short shelf life.
21:24I want one.
21:25The kitchen.
21:26Oh.
21:27Oh, my goodness.
21:29She wants rustic.
21:30No, no, not the pillow.
21:31Use the knives.
21:32I know you want to do this at your time length, but I've short circuited you.
21:39I've asked her to come here today.
21:41Really?
21:42We have to finish.
21:43I could have done that.
21:44You just had to ask.
21:45William Shatner's Hollywood career has spanned more than 60 years and is the stuff of legend.
21:51Playing iconic characters like Captain James T. Kirk in Star Trek, and winning two Emmys
21:56for his portrayal of Danny Crane on Boston Legal.
22:00That's all it takes.
22:01His latest role has him swinging a sledgehammer for Kathleen, his assistant and confidant of
22:06more than 14 years.
22:07That to 14 years, I think your home could use a little polishing up.
22:15Just a little.
22:17Transforming her kitchen, living room, and dining room into the ultimate thank you gift.
22:21This could be life changing for us.
22:24This could change everything.
22:26This space already feels brighter in here.
22:41Getting rid of that dark green wall, having the lighter tone on the floors.
22:45Also, the white plank looks awesome.
22:47Um.
22:48Anything?
22:49No.
22:50I mean, this is going to make a world of difference.
22:52And we'll take this right down the stairs at the front, too.
22:55The color is perfect.
22:57This room needed the opportunity to bounce light around.
23:01That's the problem she was having.
23:02It was just so dark.
23:03Yeah.
23:04Everything about this space is a thousand times better.
23:08I also like that I can do this.
23:09I'm going into the kitchen.
23:11Look, I'm in the kitchen, and I've decided to come back out of the kitchen.
23:15How I couldn't do it before.
23:17This is so much better.
23:18The flow, if you're in here cooking, you can literally see your guests in the living room.
23:21Well, before, your guests could only see themselves because of the giant mirror wall.
23:25But now, you can actually coordinate.
23:28This is going to be amazing.
23:42Your glue's ready.
23:44All right.
23:46There you go.
23:47Okay.
23:48Mm-mm-mm.
23:49I already dry-fitted it, so I know it fits.
23:51Okay.
23:52There we go.
23:53All right.
23:55This is so good.
23:57Hey!
23:58Hey!
23:59You got the goods.
24:00I got it right here.
24:01Now, put it in right away, will you?
24:02Yes.
24:03Because it's got a very short shelf life.
24:04Ha!
24:05Oh, it's the best I can do.
24:06You know, I'm a dad of a three- and a one-year-old, so I need all the dad jokes I can get.
24:09That's the one.
24:10That's the one.
24:11But that's a- I've never seen that.
24:13That's an innovation.
24:14It is, and they're strong, too.
24:15The reason they do this is you don't want to see the bracket, but you want it to be really strong.
24:19Yeah, so is that like a new invention in shelves?
24:22They've been around for a while.
24:23Really?
24:24But it's better than- sometimes they just do- like people will stick them up and it's really cheap.
24:29Or you have like the really bulky-
24:31Yeah, no, I see.
24:32But this is totally-
24:33Yeah.
24:34As far as I'm concerned, innovative.
24:35It's great.
24:36And I love the wood.
24:37If you were to have a treated, thick, chunky piece of wood like this, it would be so expensive.
24:41This is an inexpensive way to have that same look.
24:43Yeah, no, it's fantastic.
24:45And I love the stone.
24:47Mm-hmm.
24:48The kitchen, oh.
24:51Or as that kid says, oh.
24:54Oh, my goodness.
24:55What?
24:56She wants rustic, right?
24:57She likes that country.
24:58Oh, yeah, rustic.
24:59This is great with even the knots in the wood and-
25:02I like it.
25:03It looks beautiful.
25:04Uh, guys, what a change.
25:06My goodness, from what was to is.
25:08Yeah, I know, right?
25:09Incredible.
25:10Well, you're standing where you couldn't stand before.
25:11That was the fridge.
25:12Right.
25:13Yeah.
25:14And I'm a little cold here.
25:15Remnants of the fridge.
25:16Yeah, exactly.
25:17Uh, it's beautiful.
25:18It's beautiful.
25:19We need your opinion on something.
25:21Oh, yes.
25:22The fireplace surround.
25:23We're trying to think of what stone to do for the hearth and the surround of the fireplace.
25:27Yes, yes.
25:28Yeah, can we come over here?
25:29Yeah, I'll follow you.
25:30Yeah.
25:31Okay.
25:32All right, so we'll have the new fireplace surround, that nice low-profile facade with
25:36the stone.
25:37Yeah, yeah.
25:38I wanted you to tell me what you're thinking.
25:39Well, you don't want to echo the kitchen, right?
25:42No, I do have that stone here.
25:44No, we don't want to do that.
25:45And then the green is nice.
25:46The gray.
25:47The gray.
25:48The gray.
25:49A beautiful, neutral gray.
25:51Yeah.
25:52Would be really good taste.
25:54Yeah, because you think, too, the new floors, you have the wood tones on the floor, and then
25:58you have this gray here.
25:59It sort of gives it a more modern take on a rustic design.
26:02And it's kind of rustic.
26:03Yeah.
26:04So what kind of a mantle, what do you think?
26:06Well, you know, if you use the mantra for the mantle of something of the earth.
26:12Something of the earth.
26:13I like that.
26:14Yeah.
26:15I chant that every so often.
26:17And maybe when you get up in the morning, just chant something from the earth.
26:20How chunky do you want to be?
26:21Do you want to be?
26:22You've got to be careful of size there, because there's not much of it, so you don't want
26:27a big chunk sticking out.
26:29Yeah.
26:30You want to suggest chunkiness.
26:31We could have a good six to ten inches.
26:33I think the mantelpiece is a anchoring point in the room.
26:38So the mantelpiece itself has that character.
26:41Wood.
26:42Dark.
26:43Character.
26:44Something that nature has fondled for years and make it part of the room.
26:52When Captain Kirk himself gives you a mission like this, you cannot refuse.
26:55So it sounds like we need to organize a landing party.
26:58No, no, no.
26:59You already had your time alone with Bill.
27:00This is my mission.
27:01And I'm going to find the perfect chunk of wood to transform into the perfect focal point,
27:05and I'm prepared to go where no man has gone before.
27:08Give me your communicator.
27:09Drew, are you going to go over to the yard?
27:12Because if you pick it out, then we know we're going to get the right size.
27:14I will go to the lumber yard myself, and I will find the coolest chunk of wood that
27:19I can find, and then we will make it into the most awesome mantel.
27:23One to beam down, Scotty.
27:25Well, that sounds great to me.
27:28I need to make sure that Kathleen's mantelpiece meets Bill's particular specifications, both
27:43in size and style.
27:44This is always fun for me.
27:45I mean, this is like the little kid in me when I used to go to the lumber yard with my
27:49dad.
27:50This is a place that's got what I'm after.
27:51It's here.
27:52The piece is probably coming from out of it.
27:54Well, it definitely came out of an old packing house over in Glendora.
27:57Well, all we need is, I was told very specifically by Bill, he wants this design to be of the earth.
28:03Okay, so we're looking at something old, something distressed, and we need heavy.
28:07So what about these right here?
28:09I mean, is that burnt as well?
28:11Yeah, this has got a little bit of char from the fire that happened in that packing house.
28:16We'll work with that because that just adds extra character.
28:18Yeah, 100%.
28:19It doesn't have to look like a clean piece of wood.
28:20Yeah, it'll tell a story for sure.
28:21All right.
28:22Go.
28:23Got it.
28:24Watch yourself.
28:25We should try to trim it like this.
28:26Yeah.
28:27Then we keep the holes.
28:28One, two, three.
28:29Okay, go ahead and push it on through.
28:33Coming.
28:34Okay, hold on.
28:35Let's get this thing lined up.
28:36Give me a push that way.
28:37My way?
28:38Yeah, towards the...
28:39Oh, yeah.
28:40Yep.
28:41There we go.
28:42That looks good.
28:43All right.
28:44Give that sucker a good crank.
28:45Crank!
28:46Oh, yeah.
28:47There we go.
28:48And then just that big green start button.
28:49The green start, and then I just pull this straight down?
28:50That's it.
28:51Oh, it does it.
28:52That's it.
28:53You're done.
28:54Well, that's easy.
28:55And we just stand here and let it do its magic.
28:58Yeah, it's actually a lot better.
29:00I thought the process was going to be a lot slower.
29:02Yeah, it's actually a lot better.
29:03I thought the process was going to be a lot slower.
29:06So this is actually pretty fast to get it right out of the yard there and cut.
29:10Right.
29:11And then what we're going to do is just go ahead and set it down.
29:14Um...
29:15That's fine.
29:20All right.
29:21Oh, I see.
29:22So that'll sit flat and this is going to slide along.
29:24Exactly.
29:25So right now what we need to do is right here on these pieces, both sides, and slam them
29:30in tight.
29:31Hi-yah!
29:32Beautiful.
29:33Would we say eight and a quarter right?
29:34Eight and a quarter.
29:35All right.
29:36Let's push it in a little bit more.
29:37Keep going.
29:39You're almost there.
29:40A little bit more right about there.
29:42Okay.
29:43All right.
29:44We're going to turn on a little water here.
29:45We'll fire up the saw.
29:46Okay.
29:47And then we're just, we just walk it all the way through and it'll take it right off.
29:54Okay, now we have this clean edge which is what you need to, you want to make all this kind of beat up.
30:04We'll take this, this will be maybe the back.
30:05That way on the top you see all that.
30:06So we can just sort of brush it up a bit, clean some of the paint off of it, but still keep the detail of the wood.
30:11Absolutely.
30:12Give me a couple of hours and I'll have it all done and ready to go.
30:13I love it.
30:14She was supposed to come tomorrow, but I've asked her to come here today.
30:15Are you serious?
30:16No, not the pillow.
30:17Not the pillow.
30:18Use the knives.
30:19You have to stall her.
30:20We have to finish.
30:21Yeah, I'll stall her.
30:22You aren't going to believe this.
30:23Oh my God.
30:24Hit it.
30:52Can we try swapping the two uprights?
30:59I have a feeling one of them is slightly...
31:02You're going to hold it?
31:03Yep, I got the top.
31:05Okay.
31:06Boom.
31:07All right.
31:08Yes, that actually does get better.
31:09Actually, that's way better.
31:10Yeah.
31:11Ha!
31:12Nice.
31:13The big thing for Bill, he was saying he wanted something that wasn't matchy-matchy with the
31:16kitchen stone, but he wanted something that wouldn't compete too much in the space.
31:20I think this is a perfect blend.
31:22For a guy who's into competing with the horses, he doesn't want to compete the spaces?
31:26Can you imagine competing in your 90s?
31:28I mean, the fact that he still rides equestrian and does shows...
31:31Can you imagine going to space in your 90s?
31:34I can't imagine doing either of those.
31:35That is...
31:36I think it's pretty amazing.
31:37How cool is that?
31:38What a subtle little change to modernize, but not too modern, because the chunky wood mantle
31:44will make quite a difference.
31:45And it's a pretty cool piece.
31:47This goes...
32:00Wherever you like.
32:01In the corner, I think.
32:02Great flavor.
32:03I like it.
32:04I love the...
32:05Mortar and pestle?
32:06Ooh, mortar and pestle.
32:08The mortar and pestle is frantic.
32:11It's so good.
32:12Guys, this is incredible.
32:16I'm gonna stay here.
32:17Kathleen can live in my house.
32:19Nothing, for me, pays it off better than hearing you constantly rediscovering your love
32:25for the space.
32:26No, no, but I mean, come on.
32:29This is really good.
32:31This team of the brothers and everybody else on staff.
32:35I mean, the details to which you went to homify the premises is unbelievable.
32:45It's unbelievable.
32:46Are these real?
32:47Yeah, yeah, these are real.
32:48I mean, these are real stones?
32:49Yeah.
32:50So what do they do?
32:51File them down?
32:52No, so these ones are a little more porous.
32:54You see, it just aesthetically looks nicer when the flame hits it.
32:58But they didn't...
32:59This isn't a natural shape, is it?
33:02I don't know, actually.
33:04I think they must tumble them.
33:05Yeah.
33:06You know what they look like?
33:07Is they look like...
33:08What are those round...
33:09Eggs.
33:10They look like ostrich eggs, but very unhealthy ostriches.
33:15Painful to pass, but...
33:17No, what were the...
33:18On Star Trek, what were the things where you opened the rocks?
33:20The little talking thing.
33:22Yeah.
33:23Yeah.
33:24Tribbles.
33:25Yeah.
33:26Oh, look at that.
33:27All right, we'll fill those...
33:28How's your bag?
33:29As long as you fill it fast.
33:31It's going to take a second.
33:33Oh, you're putting glue in.
33:34Yeah, so it's an epoxy.
33:35And this has been...
33:36Don't be set on top of it for a second.
33:37Who listens to who among the two?
33:40You know, sometimes I may listen too much.
33:42He just tells me what to say.
33:43Is it bad?
33:44Are you younger by a minute or...?
33:46Four minutes.
33:47Four minutes.
33:48This is a heavy chunk of wood that I'm holding at a good angle.
33:51Right, and it's getting heavier with the glue.
33:53Can you just help me line this up a little?
33:54Okay.
33:55Here we go.
33:56Here we go.
33:57And then level it out and push it right back.
33:59Lift a little bit.
34:00There we go.
34:01Push it right in.
34:02Oh, my God.
34:03Hold it there one second.
34:04That's so perfect, guys.
34:05Isn't it gorgeous?
34:06No, that's a gorgeous piece of wood.
34:10Listen, I know you want to do this at your time length, but I've short-circuited you.
34:19I've asked her to come here today.
34:21Really?
34:22Are you serious?
34:23Not the pillow!
34:24Not the pillow!
34:25Use the knives!
34:26Oh, my God.
34:27Wait, but I thought she was coming tomorrow, so she's...
34:30I know.
34:31She was supposed to come tomorrow, but she was pacing up and down the office-wise.
34:36She wore out the carpet, and she wants it.
34:39So I said, I'll try and make it for today.
34:43Like, now.
34:44Like, literally now?
34:45She's coming right now?
34:46Literally.
34:47She's two blocks away in her car.
34:49Oh, my God.
34:50Okay.
34:51No, because she's...
34:52I mean, she's been away from her home long enough.
34:55I took pity on her and decided I wouldn't tell you because it's great television.
34:59Take pity on us.
35:00It's great television.
35:01You have to stall her?
35:02We have to finish.
35:03Yeah, yeah.
35:04If she comes to the door, you stall.
35:05We're gonna finish.
35:06I'll stall her.
35:13I think I hear her.
35:14Is that her?
35:16Kathleen working together for 14 years is...
35:20That's a unified thing.
35:22That's a friendship and a trust.
35:25You aren't going to believe this.
35:28I'm so excited.
35:29Listen, Kathleen, do you have your doctor's number?
35:32Am I gonna need it?
35:33You're gonna need your doctor's number.
35:35Oh.
35:36You're gonna need your doctor's number.
35:37I'm so excited.
35:38It's joyful to be able to give somebody a gift.
35:43It's not like, well, here's a bracelet.
35:47Oh, hi.
35:48Nothing to see.
35:49Nothing to see.
35:50How are you?
35:51You're gonna need your doctor.
35:52A bottle of alcohol.
35:54Nice to see you.
35:55Happy birthday.
35:56Merry Christmas.
35:57This is what you live in.
35:59You have this stoic confidence.
36:02Trying to be calm.
36:03But my palms are sweaty.
36:04I'm excited.
36:05Hold on.
36:06Let me see this.
36:07Oh, those are sweaty.
36:08They're sweaty.
36:09I'm sorry.
36:10Do you know how much this guy loves you?
36:11Everything that William told us about you and about what was important to you, the style
36:14that you love, the function you needed in the home, it's all here.
36:18So.
36:19Okay.
36:20You are not gonna recognize it.
36:21We gotta go.
36:22Shall we go in?
36:23Can we go?
36:24I get to go first.
36:25You get to close your eyes when you come in the door.
36:26Okay.
36:27So what could be more profound than to offer somebody an enhanced version of their living
36:34space?
36:35I mean, my God.
36:36Come on in, Kathleen.
36:37All right.
36:38Keep your eyes closed.
36:39Eyes closed.
36:40Get closed.
36:41Right there.
36:42Stop.
36:43Open eyes.
36:44Oh, my God.
36:45This is incredible.
36:46This is amazing.
36:48Come on in, Kathleen.
36:49All right.
36:50Keep your eyes closed.
36:51All right.
36:52Keep your eyes closed.
36:53Right there.
36:54Stop.
36:55Open eyes.
36:56Oh, my God.
36:58Wow.
36:59It's like a whole new place.
37:06It's a whole new place.
37:08It's just so light.
37:10It's bright and welcoming.
37:12The fireplace.
37:13I love this mantel so much.
37:15That's what I said.
37:17No pews paint.
37:18And no mirrors anymore.
37:21And kitchen's open.
37:23Kitchen's open.
37:24To this.
37:25So it makes it feel almost twice as big.
37:27It's incredible.
37:28They've opened this whole place up.
37:29This is incredible.
37:30This is amazing.
37:31Well, there's a lot to process because we loved our home before.
37:35You know, it was cozy.
37:36But there were things that if we had the opportunity to make it a little different, you know, we might have.
37:42But having this done for us changes everything.
37:46And it's far superior to what I could have ever imagined.
37:50I love this table so much.
37:52I can't wait to have people over to have dinner.
37:54It feels like the right size.
37:57Not as overwhelming as our other table was, you know?
37:59Exactly.
38:00Well, your old table was too big for the space.
38:01It was.
38:02But this is still a good size table.
38:03Yeah.
38:04This is a great size table.
38:05You can sit six, eight people here.
38:08Yeah.
38:09Yeah.
38:10Yeah.
38:11This is actually an expanding table too.
38:12So it does expand.
38:13Gosh.
38:14It feels like you really know me and my style.
38:18Because obviously I love horses.
38:19And I feel like you've brought horses into the house, but not in an overwhelming way.
38:24And these chairs are stunning.
38:27Like the leather is gorgeous and it reminds me of the saddle.
38:30The freshness of everything makes me feel like I'm kind of outside a little bit with the fresh daisies.
38:35This is nothing.
38:36This is nothing.
38:37Because the piece to resist all.
38:38Check out your new kitchen.
38:43Wow.
38:51Wow.
38:52And this is a zero maintenance counter.
38:54You can spill it all you like.
38:55It's not going to stain.
38:56Oh my gosh.
38:57This does not feel like it's the same place.
38:59Kathleen, open and close your cupboard.
39:02Look at the quality of the one.
39:04You don't have those sockets coming down that were making everything feel lower.
39:09This, I mean, it does feel like it's bigger.
39:11Like it feels taller and more open.
39:14And this is actually, this space is incredible.
39:16It's useful.
39:17You don't need all those individual shelves that you had and everything.
39:20Even over here.
39:21Oh, this is great.
39:22There's so much storage.
39:23This is the solution that allows you to have more flow in and out of your dining area,
39:32but still more storage and prep space that you didn't have before.
39:36But most importantly, we had to have somewhere to put a picture of your bill.
39:39Aww.
39:40It has quadrupled our prep space to be able to cook.
39:43Like, now we can actually be in here and cook together and feel like it's fun and not like such a chore being on top of each other.
39:52It's now a functional kitchen for two, but on top of that, you can be a part of the conversation out there.
39:56Yeah, because our guests would come whenever they'd come over for dinner and always be in the kitchen.
40:00And then there was really no room.
40:01So you've got everybody in here on top of each other.
40:04And now we can actually...
40:05Well, it makes for a different kind of party.
40:07That is true.
40:08But now we can actually all be together.
40:10They can sit there while we're cooking and we still feel like we're together.
40:13Everything's all integrated.
40:15Oh, my gosh.
40:17That's amazing.
40:18Open your fridge.
40:19This is a fridge?
40:20Yeah.
40:21Open your fridge.
40:22Oh, this is amazing.
40:26And what a great refrigerator.
40:28It's beautiful.
40:29It has so much space.
40:30My organizational heart just embraces all of it because it looks so beautiful on the outside and everything will have a space and a home of where it's meant to be.
40:39If it's too sunny in here...
40:41The blinds come down?
40:42Yeah.
40:43That's fabulous.
40:44Wow.
40:45Everything.
40:46It's beautiful.
40:47It is absolutely beautiful.
40:49The attention to detail and the elegance of the design that they did, it's perfect.
40:56I couldn't have dreamt of it.
40:58It's better than I could have ever hoped.
41:00She's going to be late for work every day.
41:01I am going to be late for work.
41:02Thank you so much.
41:03Oh, my God.
41:04It's so perfect for you.
41:09It's so...
41:10You deserve it.
41:11She's a great lady.
41:12Great lady.
41:13I'm overwhelmed.
41:14I'm just so happy that this gift is better than we could have imagined and that she has accepted it as the intention was to grace her life and thank her for all the stuff she's done for me.
41:35Wow.
41:36Oh, yes.
41:37Welcome home.
41:38Hi, honey.
41:39That's a different place, man.
41:43Wow.
41:44It's a wow.
41:46Look behind you.
41:47Oh.
41:48And this was so kind of him and thoughtful and it is a life changer for us.
41:56Oh, my God.
41:57This is phenomenal.
41:58It's a different house.
41:59Home is where your heart is and it's how you start your day and how you end your day.
42:04I think, you know, this will only make our lives brighter.
42:07I think we need to celebrate.
42:09Let's celebrate.
42:10Shelly, see what we have?
42:11Because otherwise, she's going to start to cry.
42:13Yeah, I might start crying.
42:14Thank you for the years of wonderful work that you've done for me.
42:17I want to thank you for thinking of this for me and for changing our day-to-day life.
42:23This is a big thing for us.
42:25It is a big thing.
42:26And I truly appreciate it.
42:27Thank you, Dan.
42:29I hope you're all thirsty.
42:31I've brought some drinks.
42:32That's hysterical.
42:34Yes.
42:35Beautiful.
42:36Where on earth did you get that from?
42:39I just had to bring this out.
42:41Oh, my God.
42:42Yes.
42:43Drink long and prosper.
42:45That's what I always say.
42:46I have had enough of this blue shirt.
42:51I am.
42:52This has got to stop.
42:55Yes.
42:56Smoking death room.
42:57Hold on.
42:58Uh-oh.
42:59.
