00:00The Niners are not actually that hurt.
00:02Calm down.
00:04They might be.
00:05Well, I'm looking at the preseason did not play.
00:09Talk to me.
00:10Well, I mean, all these guys didn't play.
00:11And I know most of them aren't hurt, but, you know,
00:14hard to really tell who is hurt and who's not hurt until you get to week one, right?
00:19Well, I made myself feel better today.
00:22And I have to give some credit to Matt Maioco because it was inspired by his tweet.
00:26His tweet was about Dominic Pune.
00:29So Dominic was at practice today, didn't participate,
00:33but he was running on the side.
00:35And Matt tweeted out, he goes, he looks good.
00:36He looks a lot better than he did before.
00:39And then he ended his tweet with,
00:41I'd be surprised if he's not out there for week one.
00:43And remember, the initial diagnosis was, ooh, week one is, maybe he'll play,
00:49maybe he won't.
00:50So Maioco says, I'd be surprised if he's not going to play week one.
00:55And for whatever reason, it just jumped into my head.
00:57All of these injuries, good Lord, the Niners are decimated, right?
01:02Okay.
01:03What do we know as far as who's not available week one?
01:10Well, Brandon Ayuk is not available week one.
01:12Brandon Ayuk, okay.
01:13And we've known that for almost a year.
01:15Right.
01:16Who else?
01:17That we know is not available.
01:19Like, I know today that somebody I wish could play is not going to play.
01:25What do we know?
01:26I'll give you another name.
01:27Yeah.
01:28Malik Mustafa.
01:29Okay.
01:29But we knew that.
01:31We knew that.
01:32Anyone else?
01:35Yeah, probably not.
01:36I mean, Isaac Garendo, but...
01:38Already been replaced.
01:39He might be healthy and, yeah, not even up on game day.
01:43His injury may not even be a determining factor in whether or not he plays.
01:47Okay.
01:48I mean, I could play the game of Jacob Cowing and Jordan Watkins, but, like, Watkins has
01:53never played in the NFL, and Cowing has barely played in the NFL, so miss me with the idea
01:58that that puts the 49ers in some awful spot.
02:01Jawan Jennings would be one that don't know if he's injured or not.
02:06All we know is he's not playing right now, so...
02:08Right, but we don't know that he's out week one, and in fact, Kyle Shanahan said expect
02:12him for week one.
02:13Right.
02:14Okay.
02:14Which is probably a ploy, but...
02:16For sure.
02:17But, again, so that's my...
02:20My point is, is actually, for week one, the possibility exists that the Niners are as
02:28healthy as they could possibly be right now.
02:32I know what August has felt like.
02:34Oh, my God, they're decimated.
02:36Are they?
02:38Are they?
02:39What if you walk out there with your full offensive line, your full defensive line, which largely
02:43returned to practice today, C.J. West, Michael Williams, your linebacker core right now is
02:49looking good.
02:49Renardo Green is healthy.
02:51Upton Stout is expected back soon.
02:54De'Amino Lenore is fine.
02:55The safeties, we don't know who they are, but the safety room is good.
03:01They're healthy right now.
03:02Yeah, short of Mustafa, who you mentioned, but we knew that.
03:05Your running backs, ready to go.
03:07What if Juwan Jennings is ready to go?
03:10What if, what if, what if, what if the 49ers are actually in great shape for week one?
03:15All I'm saying is that today, all of this hand-wringing and freaking out about, oh, my God, we've got to...
03:21Brew, we're going to trade for Sky Moore.
03:23They might be fine.
03:25We do not know.
03:27Like, none of these dudes have been ruled out of week one as of yet.
03:32With the exception of the two you mentioned, and we knew that.
03:34Yeah, we knew that.
03:35Going all the way back.
03:36And so, even Garendo, I don't think he's been ruled out, but he's been usurped.
03:40He's now running back three at best.
03:43And I actually think that Jeff Wilson Jr., the way he looked on Saturday, I think that he...
03:49We'll see.
03:49I don't know if he's going to make the team, but tomorrow will bring some clarity.
03:54I mean, it's definitely changed now with Brian Robinson getting signed, because there's another
04:00veteran that you can automatically give the ball to and feel better about than you would
04:04with Isaac Garendo.
04:05But to your greater point, yeah, injury-wise, they don't have a lot of guys who are just
04:10glaringly going to be out in week one.
04:13And, by the way, like, who knows, could be blessing in disguise.
04:20I mean, maybe some reps got saved in camp.
04:23I don't think this is good for the young players.
04:25But maybe some reps got saved in camp, and that could be a good thing.
04:29I was forever sort of, like, adjusted when Steph Curry, three years ago, got hurt before
04:36the playoffs.
04:37And then the playoffs happened, and you're like, dude, that injury actually scored.
04:41That injury was great.
04:42Like, he got some rest.
04:44And, you know, I don't know how many veterans necessarily this affects.
04:48The Niners are young in a lot of spots.
04:51But some of these injuries, yeah, maybe guys just, maybe they were able to sort of work
04:58their way through August in a way that keeps them fresher for September, October, November.
05:02I'm going to, like, I'm going to choose to think that the 49ers are going to be healthy
05:06until I know otherwise.
05:08And it just dawned on me, because we've talked so much about injury, that I'm like, we actually
05:12don't know that they're decimated by anything two weeks from now.
05:17Right, and the fact that Dominic Poonie might play week one, that's tremendous news.
05:22And you could have your starting offensive line, and your starting defensive line is kind
05:26of a fluid thing.
05:27You don't really have four ironclad guys you're going to lean on.
05:31And I know that Jutur Grosmatos is a guy who has been hurt, and he continues to be hurt.
05:36He's a depth piece on the defensive line.
05:38So, of your real mainstays, the guys you're going to rely on, you're right.
05:42Like, you're running back, you're tackle, you're tight end, you're quarterback, and
05:46your new receiver, Ricky Pearsall, healthy across the board.
05:51And defensively, it's, you know, Bosa and Warner, and you mentioned the guys in the
05:55secondary, healthy.
05:57All the linebackers, they've been healthy.
05:59So, you feel good about going into week one with the majority of your starters.
06:02If they get there.
06:03Like, I guess the other name that we could add to this that we haven't brought up yet
06:06is Demarcus Robinson.
06:07We know that he's not going to be available for week one, not because of injury, but because
06:11of suspension for three games.
06:14He's never played for the Niners before, but I've been a fan of his for a long time.
06:18He's played for a lot of good football teams.
06:20I think he's a really good depth receiver.
06:23Rams, Kansas City Chiefs, the teams around him tend to be good.
06:27I don't think it's because of him, but if he is your WR3 or your WR4, I think you're
06:33in pretty good shape.
06:34He's a quality player, and he looked like he had a pretty good preseason.
06:38So, yeah, like, I'm not here to tell you that everything looks great with the wide
06:42receiver core today for week one, but I also, I don't know that on some level it's awful.
06:51Like, I don't know that.
06:52If Ricky and Juwan are both ready to go for week one, and then you've got to sprinkle in
06:59whatever else it is they do between Russell Gage and Sky Moore and things like that.
07:05Robbie Chosen.
07:06Robbie Chosen, like, whatever it is you have to do for week one, sure, that's a little
07:10thin, and therefore it's a little scary, but at the same time, like, I don't know, man,
07:16like, that roster might look pretty damn good for week one in Seattle.
07:21Depends on how much you have to throw it and how these receivers actually are.
07:26Juwan Jennings coming off of no camp, and, you know, Ricky Pearsall has been good so far,
07:32in the short sample that he had with Brock in the one preseason game, but beyond that,
07:36you've had a lot of these guys you mentioned going up against the other teams, twos and
07:40their threes, so you really don't know if Robbie Chosen still has anything left, and
07:46Russell Gage, didn't he get hurt again?
07:49Yeah, no, I think he's...
07:50He's actually back from that last injury?
07:53Was he back today, or was he expected back?
07:55I don't know if he practiced today, but word came out that, like, they don't think that
08:00this is going to still be a thing two weeks from now.
08:02Okay, good.
08:03So, but I mean, look, we're going to get some clarity tomorrow.
08:06Yeah, and a lot of question marks.
08:07We don't even know who the hell is going to make the team in that room.
08:09Right.
08:09At least to start.
08:10You would figure Sky Moore would make it, otherwise why would you, you know, trade, you know,
08:14make a trade for a guy and then you end up cutting him?
08:17That would be...
08:17That would be embarrassing.
08:18...a little bit awkward, and, you know, you did get him the ball and the jet sweep, the
08:22little jet pass, and he's got speed that not a lot of other receivers on this team
08:26have, so I'd like to see him up on game day and see how they actually are going to use
08:30him.
08:32Grandy, can you find our, I like to just call him Carrington Harrington now, because it's
08:38fun, even though that wasn't...
08:38Carrington Harrison.
08:40Harrison, I know, but it's more fun.
08:41Carrington Harrington.
08:43Do we, can we play for Dibbs what he said, some of the things he said about Sky Moore?
08:48Who is this guy you're referring to?
08:50Kansas City radio host.
08:51Okay.
08:51Yep, yep, covers the Chiefs, I think from the Chiefs flagship on Odyssey Station out
08:56there in Kansas City, and he jumped on the show with us while you were traveling, and
09:01I forget what his first example was, but he was talking about landmark moments in his
09:06career, and he was like, there was this thing that happened once, which was amazing, but
09:11clearly number two, the number two landmark most surprising thing that's ever happened
09:16in my career is that somebody called me to talk on the radio about Sky Moore.
09:21So we were the second biggest moment in his career.
09:24Awesome.
09:24Which was exciting.
09:25To talk Sky Moore.
09:26To talk about Sky Moore.
09:28Yeah.
09:28Which sounds like the career still has some bright spots ahead.
09:32Hang in there, Carrington.
09:33Yeah.
09:33Yeah.
09:33Yeah, he was like, he doesn't catch the football when you throw it to him, was his main point.
09:42That's not good.
09:43He doesn't catch it.
09:43When you're the wide receiver, and you have a hard time with the receiving part of it.
09:48And then he dropped one in the preseason game.
09:50He caught three, though.
09:52Well, one of them was just the, you're in motion, I'm going to give you the bloop, the
09:56little, the jet pass.
09:58That was one of his catches.
09:58That was a forward pass.
10:00Correct.
10:01Yeah.
10:01That's one of his catches.
10:02Yeah.
10:02They caught two others.
10:04Okay.
10:04I mean, three out of four, apparently if his name's Jake Moody, he's doing wonderful.
10:08Right.
10:09There you go.
10:10Three out of four, he'll lose his job.
10:12So, you're listening to 95.7 The Game, KGMZ FM and HD1 San Francisco and Odyssey Sports
10:18Station and the home of the Golden State Warriors and Valkyries, always live on the free Odyssey
10:23app, coming to you live from the Laughing Monk Studios.
10:26Matt Barrels will join us in exactly an hour, and we'll try to get the latest on this, but
10:32it has already been a very active day for wide receivers around the league.
10:36We woke up to Terry McLaurin has signed his extension with Washington.
10:41That situation is over.
10:43Then we get word that Jacoby Myers is requesting a trade out of Las Vegas, only to hear an hour
10:49later that Amari Cooper has been signed by the Las Vegas Raiders, and the 49ers were
10:56reportedly among those who were calling and had interest.
11:00Then there's also the non-wide receiver news of the day, which is that Trey Hendrickson has
11:05ended his hold-in and got a new deal for the Cincinnati Bengals and will still be a free
11:11agent at the end of the year.
11:13Why is all of this happening today?
11:16Well, because I believe cut-down day is tomorrow.
11:19Roster decisions need to be made, and people need all of the information they can have before
11:25you make roster decisions.
11:27They need to know who's available.
11:28So, the fact that Juwan Jennings sat out practice again today, and the 49ers said over the weekend,
11:36oh, we expect him by week one, and Tim Kawakami's got an article, SF Standard, that's suggesting
11:42this is starting to lean much more toward holdout, and the Niners might even place him on IR,
11:48almost as a threat, because he's got a lot of incentives in his deal, and if he misses four
11:53games, it's going to be real hard to make those incentives, I've got to think that they're working
12:01hard on this right now.
12:02We've got 22 hours, 21, 21 hours to go until rosters need to be set, and I would argue the 49ers
12:10need to know where they stand and where Juwan Jennings stands before they make that decision.
12:17Yeah, and the decision will be mainly for a guy like Robbie Chosen.
12:21Do we end up keeping him?
12:23Do you keep Gage and Chosen, because you're not sure about Juwan Jennings?
12:28I think when you look at the wide receiver room, you're pretty solid on your top four,
12:33and if Juwan's there, your top five, you know who you're going to keep, and then it's just
12:37a question of, do you keep another guy for insurance, because Juwan isn't ready to play,
12:42or he has a calf, or his contract is not right.
12:46That, I think, is where you have to have a determination from Juwan as to exactly where you
12:51stand vis-a-vis him playing football.
12:54Who are you saying are the top four that you know are going to be on the roster?
12:57You're going to have Pearsall and Robinson, and I think Sky Moore, and Ayuk doesn't count
13:03because he's on the IR.
13:04And Robinson won't ride out of the gate either.
13:07Right.
13:07Suspended.
13:08Because he's suspended.
13:09And so, I do think you look at Gage as a guy who I think you'd like to keep, because
13:14he's somebody a few years back who was productive.
13:17The other interesting one is Cowing, where I think Cowing makes the team, even though...
13:21Oh, for sure.
13:22I mean...
13:23But he might be IR designated for return.
13:25Right.
13:25Same with, I mean, Jordan Watkins.
13:27This is kind of what I mean.
13:28Like, what you're talking out, I think, is a real challenge before tomorrow, and I don't
13:33think any of us even fully know all of the rules of, like, who counts for a roster spot
13:39and who doesn't.
13:40You're right.
13:40Ayuk's on the team.
13:41Robinson's on the team.
13:43Moore's on the team.
13:44Jennings is on the team.
13:45Pearsall's on the team.
13:46Cowing's on the team.
13:47Watkins on the team.
13:48But how and when and why and the injuries, suspensions...
13:54And it depends on when Watkins can be ready.
13:56Like, if Watkins can be ready for week two, then you don't want to put him on IR because
14:00he's out for four.
14:01And so there is a lot of that where you've got to determine the severity of the injury
14:05and, in Juwan's case, the willingness for him to actually come play football.
14:10If we take care of this contract and we give you a little extra or whatever happens, will
14:14you come play football in week one?
14:16Can we count on that?
14:17And that's something that they have to determine here in the next 21 hours.
14:20Well, let's take a listen to what Kyle said because I think we've officially reached
14:25the time where we need to start diving into every word, the tone behind it.
14:31What's actually going on here?
14:34What's being said?
14:35Because we're not getting a straight story anymore.
14:38We've arrived at like, well, yeah, it's a calf.
14:41Calfs are super tricky.
14:43No clue on the calf.
14:45Oh, but yeah, he'll be ready for week one, which is in 13 days.
14:49I thought you just said we had no idea.
14:51Like, to me, buttons are being pushed.
14:56And I don't, I hate doing this because it sounds super rude, quite frankly, to be making
15:03assumptions about someone else's body and injuries.
15:06I don't think Juwan is that hurt anymore.
15:09Maybe a little bit, but I don't think that's what this is about.
15:13I don't believe that anymore.
15:15To me, this is completely about contract.
15:16But you decide.
15:19Here's Shanahan about Juwan and week one.
15:22It's been almost a month since Juwan last practice.
15:26Is he in jeopardy of missing week one?
15:28I mean, if it doesn't heal, yes.
15:30But I expect him to be back.
15:32I think he should be back from it.
15:33But you never know with calves.
15:35Do you expect Juwan's calf to be this severe when he re-aggravated it earlier in camp?
15:41Um, I'm not a doctor.
15:42So, like I said, calves take time.
15:45You never know with calves.
15:46That's right.
15:47They're tricky.
15:48You never know.
15:49You never know with calves.
15:50And he's right, you know.
15:51No, he's not.
15:53He's totally right.
15:54You just never know with calves.
15:55If this was anyone else's calf, they'd be talking to us about it.
15:59I mean, yeah, look, McCaffrey, to a degree, was a calf.
16:04Um, I'm not a doctor, so.
16:06Yeah.
16:07I mean, I'm not a doctor.
16:09I have no idea.
16:11Should he be ready for week one?
16:12Well, yeah.
16:13He should be.
16:14He should be.
16:14That's where he got me.
16:16Oh, he should be.
16:19Coaches don't do that about injuries.
16:20Because that is putting them in a really bad spot.
16:24That's putting a player in a really bad spot if you put a timeline on an injury,
16:28but you actually don't know if the guy's going to be ready.
16:31Because then fans start getting, um, they get disappointed.
16:35They feel like too much has been promised and then not delivered.
16:39Yeah, and this is a case where he can't really come out and say,
16:43because even if the calf is hurt a little bit,
16:47then he hasn't really been out there on the practice field to put it to the test.
16:52So, even if there is a little bit of something in the calf,
16:55Shanahan doesn't know how he's responding because he's not out there practicing.
16:59Yeah.
16:59So, you combine that commentary with the reports that, um,
17:05they could put Juwan on IR.
17:08How about that?
17:09Yeah.
17:09An incentive-laden deal.
17:11How about if you miss four games, Juwan?
17:14Tough to hit those incentives when you're only playing 13.
17:16Meantime, Juwan is walking around the stadium on Saturday eating popcorn
17:21and fresh off of an Instagram post that essentially says,
17:25y'all messed with the wrong dude.
17:29That's where we're at.
17:30Yep.
17:31I don't see anything about a calf in there.
17:34Well, he was walking around.
17:35I don't know if he was eating popcorn with a limp.
17:36I didn't really get a chance to see that exact footage, but.
17:40I don't think so.
17:40Probably feeling pretty good.
17:42Just having some popcorn.
17:43Get your popcorn ready.
17:44Popcorn's delicious.
17:46I love, I wish I had a bag of popcorn right now.
17:49Tough to do radio and eat popcorn.
17:51It is, although I know a lot of people are like,
17:53that's the one that you can't eat.
17:55But for me, you know, it's anything.
17:57And peanuts.
17:57Anything from the nut family.
17:59Yep.
18:01Um, let's go to Austin in the city.
18:04Let's go to Austin in the city.
18:05I'm trying to find a way to say it so that it doesn't turn sophomoric and stupid,
18:09and I haven't found it yet.
18:11Anyway, hi, Austin.
18:12What's going on?
18:14Hey, no, I'm just getting out of work.
18:15Listen to you guys.
18:17Hey, I got this, man.
18:18Hey, you guys.
18:19I'm not too much worried about the receiver group,
18:21because availability is the best ability.
18:24Availability is the best ability.
18:26So, with that being said,
18:28I'm so glad the 49ers got a backup running back with the Robertson,
18:31because, you know, McAfee, although he's a good running back,
18:34he only had over, what, a thousand yards three times in his career,
18:38and everything else has been injury prone.
18:41And with that being said, too, also,
18:43my main concern with the injury thing is Kittle.
18:47How long are he going to stay up for us to win games?
18:52Is he going to be a blocking tight end,
18:54or is he going to be a receiver tight end until he gets injured?
18:56And then what?
18:57Who else we got on that blocking line for us, other than Williams?
19:02I mean, why are you specifically worried about Kittle?
19:06Just because of the obvious, or you think because he's aging, or what?
19:09Like, I mean, any of these guys could get hurt, Austin, any of them,
19:14at any point, as we know.
19:17It's the injury, and he go hard at his position.
19:20You feel me?
19:20It ain't no stopping what he do.
19:24He's a good blocker.
19:25He runs downfield, catches the ball.
19:27He does everything.
19:28He's the best.
19:28He's one of our biggest weapons on our team, and he's also injury-prone.
19:33So we one injury away from losing it all.
19:36I don't find George Kittle to be injury-prone.
19:38I think that's an unfair kind of label.
19:40I don't know anybody who's played as long as him
19:42and hasn't had some injuries here and there,
19:45but George has never suffered a major injury.
19:49He has suffered bumps and bruises, missed games here or there,
19:53but he's never gone down with anything that has kept him out
19:57for an entire year or anything like that, Austin.
20:00I'm not saying that he's keeping out for the years.
20:03The games that we need him in is the games that we need him in for.
20:07So I understand how long he's going to hold up.
20:08Just like the style of play that he plays, he plays physical,
20:11just like Debo plays physical.
20:12And the best ability is availability.
20:15We need Kittle to stay available for us, for us to do anything.
20:19I hear you.
20:20Yeah, Austin, I hear you.
20:21I don't disagree.
20:22I just think that that's life.
20:24I don't know how we can sit here and say that, you know what I mean,
20:28like George Kittle, does he play too aggressively or whatever?
20:32Again, he has never suffered anything awful in his career,
20:37but I can almost guarantee you right now,
20:40yeah, he's going to get hurt on some level.
20:42He's going to need treatment.
20:43It's going to be painful.
20:45He probably won't play 17 games.
20:48He never has.
20:48Yeah, like I don't, that's, welcome to the NFL.
20:52He played 15 last year,
20:54and that includes the last game of the year that he didn't play
20:56because why bother?
20:58The season was over.
20:59And the year before that, he played 16 of the 17,
21:01and then 15 the year before that.
21:03So George Kittle is a guy who plays through pain and some injury.
21:08He's always available, and he's always out there doing it.
21:11But to Austin's point, I would worry about George Kittle getting hurt
21:16just because of the drop-off to the next guy up on your tight end ledger.
21:20You don't have that.
21:22Even with Brian Robinson Jr. now,
21:24you do have somebody who has proven to be able to run the ball in the NFL
21:28behind McCaffrey.
21:29He's not as good as McCaffrey,
21:30but the drop-off from McCaffrey to Robinson
21:34is a lot smaller, in my opinion,
21:36than Kittle going down to the backup tight end.
21:38Yeah, and just one point of clarification on McCaffrey,
21:41he's actually rushed for over 1,000 yards four times, not three times,
21:45and he has had a season affected by injury one, two, three times,
21:51and he's had one, two, three, four, five, six fully healthy seasons.
21:56So six fully healthy, three not fully healthy,
21:59four times over 1,000 yards.
22:01And each of those unhealthy seasons came right after major carries,
22:06major touches.
