00:00Big cook, little cook, welcome to our cafe.
00:07Big cook, little cook, want you to come and play.
00:14Meeting all the friends we cook for, sharing stories, trips and fun.
00:23Big cook, little cook, we'll cook for everyone!
00:29Oh, hello! Welcome to our cafe, the best cafe in the world!
00:41Can you hear that whistling? That's Ben. He's getting some flowers from the garden.
00:46They're going to be big, colourful and smell beautiful!
00:52He's asked me to find a vase to put the flowers in.
00:55Now, what would be perfect to put flowers in?
00:59Oh, this will be fine! Hey, I can't wait to see the flowers! Can you?
01:05Here we are, Small!
01:07Oh, hello everyone!
01:09They're not flowers, they're vegetables, Ben!
01:12I'm sorry, Small, but none of my flowers have grown.
01:15I'm not very good at growing flowers.
01:17Oh, never mind! You're really good at growing vegetables!
01:20Now, come on! Put them in this vase!
01:22Oh, Small! They look really silly in that cup!
01:26I wish I could grow flowers!
01:29You can, Ben! You just need a bit of practice, that's all!
01:32We've got a customer! I'm on my way! Woo-hoo!
01:51Who's our customer today, Small?
01:53Well, he does this!
01:59He does this? I think he's digging!
02:02Ooh! It could be someone who could help me with my flowers!
02:05Is it a gardener, Small?
02:07Yes, Ben! It's Gary the gardener!
02:10Oh, brilliant! Gary the gardener!
02:12Ho-ho-ho! I wonder what we could cook for him!
02:15I don't know, Ben! I think it's time to look in my book!
02:29We need a story to help us cook!
02:31Let's take a look in Little Cook's book!
02:34Little Cook's Adventures in the Big World!
02:38Let me see!
02:41Gary the gardener was brilliant at growing things,
02:44Everyone said he had green fingers,
02:47but his fingers weren't really green!
02:49What they meant was that he could grow anything at all
02:52from a tiny little seed!
02:54He planted seeds everywhere!
02:57He watered them, he talked to them,
03:00and cared for them until every corner of his garden
03:03was full of beautiful flowers!
03:05He grew roses and tulips, daisies and sunflowers,
03:09delicious vegetables like carrots and leeks,
03:12but he grew so many that he didn't know what to do with them all!
03:17Gary decided to give his flowers and vegetables away to his neighbours,
03:22but he still had lots left in his garden!
03:25What was he going to do with them all?
03:28Then Gary put a sign outside his house that read,
03:31Free! Pick your own flowers and vegetables!
03:35There was a big queue every day,
03:38but he was still left with lots in his garden!
03:41What was he going to do with them all?
03:44Gary borrowed a big van from a friend.
03:47He piled it high with flowers and vegetables from his garden,
03:50and drove off to the local school.
03:53The teachers and children were very pleased to see Gary.
03:56They decorated the classrooms with his flowers,
03:59and ate his delicious vegetables at lunchtime!
04:02But Gary was still left with lots and lots of flowers and vegetables in his garden!
04:08What was he going to do with them?
04:11I knew that I had to help!
04:14So I climbed on my spoon and flew straight to his house!
04:18I suggested that we dried the flowers so they would keep forever,
04:22and pickled the vegetables and put them in jars!
04:25That meant his vegetables wouldn't be wasted and would last for a very long time!
04:32They will all make brilliant presents from our friends, said Gary.
04:37Little cook to the rescue once again!
04:41That was a great adventure!
04:43That was brilliant!
04:45Oh, Gary's really clever!
04:47He can grow vegetables and flowers!
04:50Whey!
04:51I know, Ben!
04:52I've never seen so many!
04:54Now we need to think what to cook for him!

07:14This is the right place.
07:21This field is full of shallots.
07:25The farmer is picking them.
07:27There they are.
07:29Shallots are like onions, but smaller.
07:34This lady is going to pickle some shallots.
07:41First of all, she has to peel them.
07:43Off comes the skin.
07:49Now the shallots have to soak for a while in some salt and water.
08:00That's the vinegar that the shallots are going to be pickled in.
08:04The vinegar is going to be heated up on the cooker.
08:08Remember, this is a grown-up helper's job.
08:10Look, the vinegar is bubbling.
08:15Bubbly, bubbly, bubbly.
08:20Now the shallots are ready, it's time for more fun.
08:23Hooray!
08:23First, you have to fill up the jar with lots of shallots.
08:29Pack them in tightly.
08:30Then you can add some herbs and spices, any you like.
08:39They're peppercorns.
08:40Pour in the vinegar.
08:49Pour in the vinegar.
08:54Put on the lid, and that's pickled shallots.
08:57That was great!
08:59See you later!
09:00Peter Piper picked a peck of pickled peppers.
09:09A peck of pickled peppers, Peter Piper picked.

09:22Hooray!
09:23I'm back!
09:25I had a fantastic time.
09:27Oh, and guess what I saw being pickled?
09:30Tell me, Small.
09:31Shallots!
09:32Oh, dear.
09:33Have you got a cold?
09:35No, Ben.
09:36Shallots.
09:37I saw shallots growing in a field, and then they were pickled in vinegar.
09:42Shallots brilliant!
09:44Sounds great, Small.
09:46But we'd better get cooking.
09:47Gary the gardener will be really hungry by now.

10:40Have you cleaned the surfaces?
10:42Yes.
10:43Have you washed your hands?
10:44Yes, all clean and ready to cook.
10:48Do you remember the ingredients to gardener's pickle?
10:51You do?
10:52There was onion.
10:54One.
10:55Chopped.
10:55Red peppers.
10:56Two.
10:57Deseeded and sliced.
10:58Yellow peppers.
10:59Two.
11:00Deseeded and sliced.
11:01Salt.
11:02One tablespoon.
11:03Malt vinegar.
11:04300 millilitres.
11:06Turmeric.
11:06One teaspoon.
11:08Mustard seeds.
11:09One teaspoon.
11:10And granulated sugar.
11:11A hundred and fifty grams.
11:14Whoopee.
11:15Let's get started.
11:17Right.
11:17First, I'm going to put all the vegetables into a mixing bowl.
11:22And now the peppers.
11:25In they go.
11:28And then I'm going to sprinkle the salt over the top.
11:31And then mix them all up together.
11:39Like this.
11:41Here we are.
11:42Mix, mix, mix.
11:45There.
11:45What's next, Mole?
11:49Ooh.
11:50Cover the bowl with clear film and leave it for 12 hours.
11:54Okay, then.
11:57Cover the bowl with clear film and leave it for 12 hours.
12:06Right, they're ready.
12:07What's next, little cook?
12:09Put all the vegetables into a colander and rinse them with cold water to wash off the salt.
12:14Okay, then.
12:15Let's wash off the salt.
12:17I'll go and get the kitchen roll.
12:19Ready to dry the vegetables afterwards.
12:23Here we are.
12:24All the salt's washed off now.
12:26Oh, Small.
12:28Look at you.
12:31I seem to have got myself into a bit of a pickle.
12:33Oh, there you have.
12:36Right.
12:37Never mind, Small.
12:39I'll put the vegetables in this nice clean tea towel to dry them.
12:42Now, pour the vinegar.
13:00the mustard seeds turmeric and the sugar into a saucepan and bring it to the boil
13:14and remember this is a job for your grown-up helper to do because it's a
13:18hob job and the hob is hot hot hot the turmeric will turn the mixture yellow it's boiling now
13:31so turn the heat right down and let it simmer for about 10 minutes I'll set the timer for 10 minutes
13:39then the 10 minutes are up okay small I'm gonna put the chopped vegetables into the pan and then
13:55bring the mixture back to the boil and remember this is a job for your grown-up helper to do
14:01because it's a hob job and the hob is hot hot hot cook for a couple of minutes then remove from the
14:08heat and let it cool for a bit just give it a final stir and then remove it from the heat
14:15to let it cool down and whilst we're waiting for it to cool down small we can sing my favorite rhyme
14:22yippee I love rhymes it's Peter Piper picked sing it with me small you join in too Peter Piper picked
14:32a peck of pickled peppers, a peck of pickled peppers, Peter Piper picked if Peter Piper picked a peck
14:52Piper picked a pack of pickled peppers. Where's the pack of pickled peppers?
14:55In the saucepan. Oh, right. Hey.
15:02Now that it's cooled, we can spoon the mixture into a clean sterilized jar.
15:13And I'm going to make a snazzy label to stick onto the jar.
15:16Do, do, do, do, do. Do, do, do, do, do, do, do.
15:28There we are.
15:32And on goes the lid.
15:37There we go. All done.
15:41Ben, can you stick this on the jar, please?
15:44Thank you, Small. Oh, that's great.
15:48I'll just stick it to the side of the jar, like this.
15:56There we go. And to finish it off, I'm going to pop a bit of cloth over the top
16:02and use an elastic band to hold it in place.
16:06There we go.
16:08It looks brilliant, doesn't it, Small?
16:10It certainly does, Ben. Quickly, let's get it through to Gary the gardener.
16:15OK. I'm just going to pop it onto a plate with some bread and cheese.
16:19And there we have it.
16:21One gardener's pickle coming through.
16:23Ah, there. All done. So, what do we do now? Can we play?

17:20A-ha! Here comes the plate.
17:32Oh, yes. And it looks like Gary the gardener enjoyed his gardener's pickle.
17:37Look, Small. He's left a note.
17:39Well, what does it say? What does it say?
17:41Hoo-hoo! Let's see, shall we?
17:45It says, Dear Big Cook Ben and Little Cook Small,
