00:00High on the mountain.
00:01Golly, we are not in Waco anymore, are we?
00:03This is our first out of Central Texas project.
00:07I love this fireplace.
00:08But I wish it was in here.
00:10I know.
00:11Does this seem problematic?
00:13I think it would be totally doable.
00:15Steve's going to be our connection points
00:16to get this project finished.
00:18I wanted to point out we had a visitor.
00:20I knew you were going to say bear.
00:23Maybe I did my last demo.
00:24And the only reason you're not demoing
00:26is because it's not in Texas.
00:28Unbelievable.
00:29My daughter, Ella, Chip had an idea
00:32to let her design the little cottage.
00:34This is your homework.
00:35Are you accepting the challenge?
00:37I'm accepting the challenge.
00:39Hopefully, this is the thing that kickstarts
00:42all of the beauty she's going to create in the future.
00:44Let's go.
00:46Oh, I love me somehow.
00:56Since we left Colorado, Steve and the team have been busy.
00:59We started work on Ellis Cottage, removing the closets
01:02and opening up that space, and put in a new railing on the deck
01:06in the main house.
01:08And while everything is moving in the right direction,
01:11the reality of doing a project outside of Texas
01:13is really starting to set in.
01:15Hey, Joe, it's Steve.
01:17Hi, Steve.
01:18I got the hand-hume beams riding throughout the house.
01:20I think you're going to love them.
01:21But they are lighter than the existing wood,
01:23so I'm working on a solution so everything blends.
01:26And also, we got to talk about the fireplace
01:28when you got some time.
01:30We're really excited about gathering here
01:32with the whole family and even the extended family.
01:34We have about four months left to finish this project,
01:37so we're really starting to feel the pressure
01:39while we're here at home in Waco.
01:42Every project we've done, there's always a thing.
01:45There's always that one thing that likes to just kind of taunt me.
01:47Most projects have several things.
01:49But there's always, like, one major thing.
01:52And I can name them specifically on each project we've done.
01:55On the mountain house, it's a fireplace situation.
02:00This one sounds like a bummer.
02:02Why?
02:03Because there's no way to do it the way we designed.
02:08Steve was like, Joe, you got to quickly make a new design decision.
02:15That's not what it's supposed to look like.
02:17What happened?
02:18Because we want a fireplace above and below,
02:21OK.
02:22The ideal spot for a fireplace in this room is right here.
02:26And the ideal spot for a fireplace in this room is right here.
02:30Because of this one being on the second floor,
02:32it's got to have a footer.
02:34Obviously, the deck can't support that,
02:35so this has to go all the way down.
02:37Right.
02:38Because of that, I'm losing this French door in the den.
02:42Now you're just going to have this blank space.
02:44Let me just show you.
02:45That's what it was going to look like.
02:47That's beautiful.
02:49And now I have to lose this, and then it just feels like wonk, wonk.
02:56Really, at the end of the day, the choice is lose the downstairs fireplace or lose a French door.
03:02So do I just kill that and call it a day?
03:04Who cares?
03:05Hey, you know I love symmetry.
03:07Now we'll eliminate this door, but it's just everything gets tight and weird.
03:12But it's just downstairs in that one little corner.
03:14Yeah.
03:14You know, this is still the focal point.
03:16Yeah.
03:16You're going to have lots of that out there.
03:17Which that will be beautiful.
03:18Yeah, it's going to be great.
03:19Okay.
03:20Maybe in my mind, because for months now I've seen the downstairs.
03:24You know what?
03:24It is what it is.
03:25Have this beautiful fireplace centered, and then a French door, a French door, and then
03:29everything is centered around that moment.
03:32We're now.
03:33Too many words.
03:33It is what it is.
03:34So I'll just take a day, regroup, and we'll all be fine.
03:38Sounds like I get to keep both my fireplaces.
03:40You get both of your fireplaces.
03:41Great.
03:41I'll lose my French doors.
03:43Yes.
03:44I'll call Steve.
03:45All right.
03:45See you later, babe.
03:46Okay.
04:01So now that the design is complete on the main house, we have now put all of our focus
04:07onto this cottage, which is like a little guest cottage.
04:10It's a one bedroom, really on the exterior.
04:13Everything's going to pretty much stay the same.
04:15All we're going to do is change the exterior paint color, but we're going to keep the roof.
04:20On the inside, for some reason, I'm thinking the boys in this space, which is why I wanted
04:24to feel a little more masculine in the textures and the colors, but just add these feminine details,
04:31like more delicate brass, just really help balance that.
04:34And here, I feel like it's like the lodge.
04:37The anchor of this space is going to be the new fireplace that we're going to install.
04:41I mean, you're in the mountains, you think winter, a cozy fire is a dream.
04:45Then I'm going to put two windows on both sides because the view is just the most beautiful thing.
04:49So everywhere you look, hopefully there's a window and a view.
04:53So you'll see this really beautiful green that doesn't feel too punchy.
04:57Green is my favorite color, so we thought let's put it everywhere we can.
05:01As far as a materials standpoint, we're going to keep the existing wood floors.
05:05The tongue and groove right now, it's white.
05:07We're going to paint it green.
05:09We want to play around with a little more color in there just to make it feel a little cozier.
05:13And then we're either going to keep the existing color on the walls or add this creamy plaster.
05:19This Dutch door right here actually was the Dutch door that was in the main house in the kitchen.
05:24I love that door so much.
05:25And since now that part of the kitchen is the primary bathroom,
05:29we're taking this Dutch door and putting it in this little cottage.
05:32In the kitchen, this is the tile.
05:35I love that it's tonal.
05:36You've got all different whites and creams.
05:38So I just think this is going to be a really pretty accent with this green.
05:42I just love how that plays off of each other.
05:44It's a small kitchen, so I'm really trying to add a little bit of character.
05:48So you'll see that on the cabinets doing really simple brass knobs, a butcher block countertop.
05:54So it just feels timeless and classic.
05:57Here's the one bedroom in the space.
06:00And this is where I imagine it feeling kind of lodgy, but I wanted some texture.
06:04So I'm going to do this like nice dark green plaid wallpaper.
06:09And then where the existing tongue and groove is on the ceiling and all of the doors in the trim,
06:15I'm just going to match that with that same green.
06:17The bathroom.
06:18I thought to go with just one of my tried and true favorites.
06:21It's like a concrete with a limestone finish.
06:23And I thought it'd be fun to use on the wall so that it feels like a really cool statement
06:28right when you walk in.
06:29Overall, I just really wanted this to feel calm, soothing.
06:33So there's one more cottage to design, and that's the one that I'm working on with Ella.
06:37She's taking lead on the design here in Waco.
06:41And I can't wait to see it come together.
06:45In the meantime, we're headed to Colorado to deal with the main house.
06:50Oh my goodness.
06:52Good night, babe.
06:54What a dream.
06:55Mountain towns are the best towns.
06:57They really are quite stunning.
06:59You have mountains, you have blue sky.
07:02Babe, look at that roaring river.
07:04I'm just so glad that the kids are with us.
07:08You know, it feels fun to be, you know, on vacation, kinda.
07:13Kids are exploring today.
07:16But really, it's like, hey, mom and dad are working.
07:18Work and play.
07:19We've got some stuff we've got to figure out.
07:20The fact that Crew brought his first fly fishing pole.
07:23He got first birthday.
07:24I can't wait.
07:25I can't wait for you to fish down there with him.
07:26I'm going to get after it.
07:28So what all are we excited to see regarding the property?
07:33I think we're just trying to take it a little, you know, day by day here.
07:36I think Steve's got a lot going on this week.
07:39He went this past weekend to go get all the hand-hewn beams.
07:42He picked them out individually.
07:44Those will be in the primary, the living room, really all over the house.
07:48I mean, we've got a lot.
07:50Hopefully, there aren't any more surprises, Chip.
07:58Hey, Steve.
08:00Hey, guys.
08:01How are you?
08:01Good to see you.
08:02Me too, man.
08:03Not seeing the house every day or every week, you feel a bit disconnected.
08:08How do you micromanage a project that I can't touch?
08:11Isn't it weird that we were strangers just a few short months ago, you know?
08:15I just feel like it.
08:16Now, my wife, who I barely get a hug from, literally walks in and gives you a big bear hug.
08:20Steve saves the day.
08:21And I know she's worried about change orders, so she's buttering me up.
08:23There you go.
08:23You know me.
08:24We're coming as often as possible.
08:26There you go.
08:27Well, what are you up to today?
08:28What do you got on your mind?
08:29You know, I want to talk about your HVAC system.
08:31We're trying to figure out how to get it in.
08:32We don't have a chase.
08:33We don't have an attic.
08:34We don't have soffits.
08:35We don't have anything.
08:36It's all concrete.
08:36Because in Texas, you build an entire house so that all this stuff gets hidden
08:40and you never even know it exists.
08:42And here, this was not built for the HVAC side of the equation.
08:47We never put AC in Colorado, but now we do.
08:50Our winters are shorter.
08:51You're saying it's become more common than not, even in these mountain town communities.
08:56Yeah, every house we do now has AC in it.
08:59So we're doing the right thing.
09:00But it's challenging every design detail.
09:04Totally.
09:04And I see that right there.
09:05And I'm like, there's going to be one in every room.
09:07So I'm really trying to understand.
09:09Yeah.
09:09Yeah.
09:09And I was afraid to show you, but I knew I had to.
09:11I have to.
09:12I have to see it.
09:12We have to address it now.
09:14We came up with a solution.
09:15Okay.
09:16So this unit, the floor mounted AC and heat, and we're going to put it in the wall.
09:20And what we want to do is fur this wall out, make it thicker.
09:23How far are we talking?
09:24This is eight and a half.
09:26So we're going to fur this wall out five inches, the whole wall.
09:29So how much of this is exposed?
09:31None of it.
09:31None of it's exposed.
09:32It'll be inside the framing.
09:33You'll never see it except for the linear vent.
09:36So it'll be in your baseboard.
09:38And we understand you want to put a piece of furniture here.
09:40I have a piece of furniture here.
09:41And it's like 65 inches tall.
09:42And I believe your furniture piece has legs on it.
09:45It does.
09:46So it would be a perfect fit.
09:47I see.
09:48Great.
09:48One of my favorite things in these renovations is the problem solving.
09:51That's what keeps me creative.
09:53So this is our conduit solution for this part of the house.
09:56And we're also going to be running the duct work from the lower level
09:59and then come up through the floor of the kitchen
10:01so that we can feed that part of the house.
10:04We'll be here for a couple of days this week.
10:06So I'll check back in with you soon.
10:08Glad you liked it.
10:09Well done, Steve.
10:09Thank you, sir.
10:10All right.
10:10We'll see you here in a little bit.
10:11Thank you, Steve.
10:11Enjoy yourself.
10:14Babe, look.
10:15The beams.
10:16The beams.
10:17Holy cow.
10:17The beams.
10:19What a dream.
10:20These are gorgeous.
10:21But now I see what Steve meant because they're a lot lighter than the existing beams.
10:26Like, I love how natural these look.
10:28So we need to see what he comes up with to fix the contrast.
10:31But they're beautiful.
10:32They look great.
10:33But Chip, everything looks so different.
10:36Wow.
10:37Look at these trees.
10:38I am a bit overwhelmed by the landscape.
10:40I want to take that one down.
10:41You know, look how dead that thing is.
10:42That's about to fall on the house.
10:44So that goes down.
10:45The only thing I'm seeing on the exterior that maybe I wasn't accounting for in the design
10:52was the landscape.
10:54What is this?
10:55I guess it's from these cottonwood trees.
10:57What lawn is that?
10:59I feel like I'm on Mars.
11:00I think every time we've come, not everything has woken up.
11:04But now everything is woken up.
11:06It's like the first time it's hit me that this is so disconnected.
11:10Like, we're not physically here every day.
11:12That's true.
11:13Every time we come here, we're like, oh my gosh, there's a lot of work to be done for us to finish
11:17this off by early fall.
11:19As I look that way, I'm a bit terrified now.
11:22It's like a lot of weeds.
11:24But I wouldn't, you know, we can do that little by little.
11:27Yeah, I know.
11:27Just some stuff that I feel like.
11:29Don't worry about that, because worst case scenario, I think we can incorporate what we
11:32need to incorporate kind of as we go.
11:36That tree does need to go though, good eye.
11:39That'll be fun.
11:41Okay.
11:41Okay.
11:42This week, I'm meeting with a landscaper who, um, I was going to walk through all the window
11:47boxes and the planters.
11:49And that's all I was putting money into.
11:51Um, but now I'm going to be like, hey, listen, I need, um, an extra favor here.
12:08This is going to be fun.
12:09I can already tell.
12:10How are you?
12:10I'm Joanna.
12:11I'm Judy.
12:12Judy, nice to meet you.
12:14I'm Zach.
12:14Zach.
12:15I'm just so excited today.
12:17I get to talk plants and landscape.
12:20I love gardening and I love landscape back in Texas, but I think this is a whole new
12:24learning curve.
12:25I don't know what a wildflower is and I don't know what a weed is here.
12:28I wanted to tackle the planters with y'all.
12:30But then if you have time, I'd love to walk through just the front, what we should keep,
12:35what we need to add, and then we can go from there.
12:38Beautiful.
12:39These barrel things.
12:40Normally, I love doing big new planters, but I was like, this feels natural.
12:44I've got five planters that I really think will help bring these porches to life.
12:49That's going to kind of be the big moment of color.
12:51It'll kind of frame all of this.
12:54I love the variation that you've brought.
12:56Some of these are perennials and some of them are annuals.
12:59Okay.
12:59Annuals will flower the whole time till cold and the perennials just have kind of a joie de vie
13:05that we like because this is a perennial.
13:08Yep.
13:09This could be put in the garden in the fall, but it's so dramatic right now that we like to use it
13:16with the annuals.
13:17I see.
13:18Mm-hmm.
13:19If I were to leave the perennials in the winter...
13:22They might not make it in here because Colorado is very dry.
13:25Right.
13:25So maybe all I need to think about here is just a mixture of both, but not this idea of like,
13:30I'll come back every season and maybe they're back.
13:32That's not how it works.
13:33Not in the planter.
13:34Okay, fine, fine.
13:36Very drawn to this situation.
13:38The fuchsia.
13:39My favorite thing about a planter is the spiller.
13:41You would just put on the edge.
13:42Right.
13:42And it would kind of hide the old...
13:43That's what I want.
13:45Which is very Colorado, these whiskey barrels.
13:47Yes.
13:48Okay, good.
13:49Because I love this.
13:50Lavender, yes.
13:51I just wanted to kind of show them the palette I love to work with, the textures, the layering.
13:56I'm a little more subtle when it comes to color.
13:58Very nice.
13:59I like purple.
14:01I love how muted that yellow is.
14:03It is very pretty.
14:04Any of these that do really good in window boxes?
14:06Because obviously it's a little more shallow.
14:09There's a window box here.
14:09Let's bring it here and just get an idea.
14:11Is that heavy though?
14:12Should I just go straight geranium?
14:14Do you know what?
14:14The visual of seeing geraniums in a window box, it's pretty great.
14:19I love those.
14:20I've always wanted just like a full window box of geraniums.
14:24But we're going to walk to the front now.
14:26Let me take one of those.
14:27I just painted the house green.
14:28I want to make sure I don't do Christmas.
14:30Yeah.
14:31Or it may just pop off that green in such a beautiful way.
14:34You can educate me on what I'm looking at.
14:36Okay.
14:37I want to spend some time in here and here because this is to me the most important part
14:42is this walk up moment.
14:44When you look at this, what do y'all see?
14:46Is this wildflowers or is this a bunch of weeds?
14:48This is a native wildflower called false Solomon seal.
14:55And it's a ground cover.
14:57I would keep it.
14:58What about that branchy thing?
14:59This is a twin berry.
15:00This is a native.
15:01Do bears like that?
15:02They do.
15:03Oh crap.
15:03I'm so scared of bears.
15:05It can be cut down.
15:06You're not really killing it.
15:07But like this.
15:08Yellows.
15:08That one I cut out down to the ground.
15:10This one you're saying cut.
15:11Some of the scraggly things, if you just cut them down, it's called hard pruning.
15:16And it'll come back.
15:17They'd come up more lively.
15:19I love meeting with people who are experts, who love what they do.
15:23Watching her just jump into that patch of who knows, it could have been poison sumac.
15:28It could have been poison ivy.
15:30And I just love her knowledge.
15:32And I was trying to soak it all in because at some point as the caretaker of this property,
15:36I'm going to have to have that same knowledge.
15:39And I can't wait to learn more from her.
15:41She doesn't know.
15:41She's going to come back here a few more times and she's going to be my mentor.
15:45I would love just your expertise on how to set this up well and then how do I maintain it.
15:50But I'm going to go check on the geraniums.
15:52I'll let you know.
15:53To me, landscape on any project brings everything together.
15:57I love it.
16:05We've been in Colorado for a few days now.
16:08And so today, Chip and crew are going to try out his new fly rod down at the river.
16:13This is awesome.
16:14This is awesome, son.
16:16While I'm meeting with the design team.
16:19They're also here in town.
16:21We're going to try to knock out all of the paint colors per room.
16:24I feel like we've done a lot of this back home.
16:25Right.
16:26So I think we should be pretty close.
16:28The downstairs with the existing fireplace, we're calling that the like game room sitting room.
16:33We lightened up that room with the cream, but the trim around the snack bar is still dark.
16:38So it's between these two blues.
16:39And then this burgundy will be on the snack bar cabinets.
16:43I mean, I really like the left one.
16:44Mm-hmm.
16:45I know we're doing it in the reading nook.
16:46Mm-hmm.
16:47Right.
16:47I wanted to head home with 95% of the paint colors chosen.
16:52This blue gray will go in the reading nook upstairs.
16:55And then right below it, it will go around the snack bar and the sitting room.
17:00This is the cabinetry.
17:03So it's going to look like that.
17:04And then it's not too dark down there.
17:06There's no light.
17:08One of these is for the bunk room, right?
17:11Which I think on that, what matches the wallpaper the best.
17:14It was this one.
17:15Great.
17:16We have a short timeframe here, so there's a lot to accomplish.
17:19So today I'm...
17:24What do we think that is?
17:27What is it?
17:36It's either Sasquatch or Chip Gaines, but I did think that was a bear.
17:42No, it's not a bear.
17:45Is that a bear?
17:48That's not Chip?
17:52Oh my gosh.
17:53It's a bear.
17:54It's a bear.
17:55Well, Chip is down there with crew.
17:59Yes, let's go inside.
18:03Crap.
18:11Oh, he's a mad bear.
18:14I feel like we should go get Chip and crew.
18:16Anna's going down to them.
18:17Who's going down to them?
18:18Anna.
18:19Well, even Edge.
18:20I don't want her risking her life.
18:21Well, someone's got to go.
18:22No, not Anna.
18:24I don't want anyone going.
18:27Don't be on the deck, y'all.
18:35The amount of sweat.
18:37Chip, that's terrifying.
18:40I literally was like, he's going to eat crew and you for lunch.
18:43Oh yeah, don't trip bear.
18:44Bears know how to walk.
18:46I should have seen that coming.
18:48I kept hearing a rustling in the woods.
18:51And as always, I think Chip's going to prank me.
18:54It's so hot.
18:55Let me tell you, when you first were acting crazy as I go,
18:58that's Chip because he would do that.
19:00But then when I really looked, it was like,
19:02I thought he was mad we were in his area.
19:06It had a stick and it was hitting a tree.
19:09Now, do bears take sticks and whack trees?
19:11I don't, I don't know.
19:14On all fours, wiggling around like an idiot,
19:17taking a big branch, whacking stuff.
19:19And then you go in and then why did you come back out?
19:22Because then I see you walking and you look like a party gig.
19:27Chip, I really was scared.
19:28That was all very bad.
19:29And now, this is the story of my life.
19:31He just loves to scare me.
19:32But 90% of the time, I get him right before it.
19:36This one was successful.
19:38I legit was scared.
19:39Dude, you look awesome, bro.
19:42Dang, that is kind of believable.
19:45You both are in big trouble.
19:47Crew, were you in on this?
19:48Yes, ma'am.
19:49The only reason it didn't work all the way, crew,
19:52is because mama thought you were down there.
19:54So she came in to save you.
19:55I was so scared.
19:57So as I was trying to say, my philosophy on picking a paint palette
20:03is pick it in person.
20:05And that's what I'm doing.
20:06I've got so much bear hair in my mouth.
20:09You smell like a bear.
20:09But babe, I mean it.
20:10Like in my mouth.
20:12Truly, this doesn't smell good.
20:14So you-
20:14Oh, damn.
20:16That might be just me.
20:17That's what I'm saying.
20:18You mixed with cheap bear costume equals-
20:20But for real, smell this.
20:21I just can't.
20:23That was awesome.
20:25That was awesome.
20:26I think we got her.
20:30I'm going to smell like a cheap bear suit
20:32all the way back to Texas, aren't I?
20:42So we're back here in Waco.
20:43And almost like clockwork,
20:45another pretty significant design issue has popped up.
20:48So we went to order the batch of tile.
20:52And I think the one that is the most off is this green for the kitchen.
20:56This is what we ordered.
20:57And their new batch of tile came in more of this lighter green.
21:02That's very different.
21:03I know.
21:03So-
21:05Okay.
21:06So this is the green I want for the kitchen.
21:08This was what we received a few months ago.
21:11This was an old batch.
21:13And I feel like this new green is just a little too-
21:16It's like bright.
21:18So since these are hand-painted and put in the kiln,
21:21they take the color differently each time they do a new batch.
21:24Oh, no.
21:26So I talked to the manufacturer and it sounds like if we're willing to ship them
21:31a control sample, they can match our color.
21:33They can-
21:34Okay.
21:35With the tile that I'm picking that's going in a lot of the spaces,
21:39what I'm running into is nothing's ever going to come out the same
21:42because it truly is just this handmade process.
21:45To me, though, the colors I saw today were almost too varied.
21:48Like, it told a completely different story.
21:50But that's crazy how different that is.
21:52Mm-hmm.
21:53I know.
21:54So that's what I'm a little nervous about is like everything based off of this
21:57shade of green is now very different.
22:00Right.
22:00I'm just trying to see, can we control that tone a little bit?
22:04Or if it's going to be completely random,
22:05then I really think I need to go back to the drawing board
22:08because we don't have a ton of time now.
22:09And we're already dealing with the variation in the wood beams.
22:12All of these details are really adding up.
22:14So we will ask them to update this new batch
22:18and have them send us a new control sample.
22:21Let's just hope for the best.
22:22Great.
22:23Holy moly, babe.
22:40Hi, Chip.
22:41It is some kind of hot.
22:42I know.
22:43It's like humid and hot here.
22:45I can deal with the heat.
22:46It's the freaking humidity that is a little bit.
22:50You okay?
22:52Choking me, you know?
22:53I feel suffocated.
22:55It's hot.
22:55Did you get all your tours done?
22:57Well, mostly.
22:57I'm about halfway done.
22:59You know, what I've been daydreaming about with the mountain house is just like how
23:02cool it's going to be.
23:03Like the weather.
23:05We're going to be down on the river, even if it's hot.
23:08I can only imagine down by the river it's not.
23:11I don't think it even gets hot in Colorado.
23:14I think the last 20 plus years we've been doing renovations,
23:18summer is always our busiest season on these projects.
23:21Yeah, that's true.
23:22This will be the first project that we do in the summer where we're not sweating profusely.
23:27And I, my only fear is like that we only from this point moving forward do fixtures in Colorado.
23:34The funny thing is once we experiment and go there for the summer, we're going to be like,
23:38we work remote now.
23:39Yeah.
23:39We work for Magnolia, all remote.
23:41Okay, well.
23:43Well, wish me luck.
23:44Don't want to sit and craft with me while I'm putting some of these things together?
23:48As hot as it is, babe, that looks even more miserable.
23:51I can't imagine.
23:52You don't want to press flowers with me?
23:53No.
23:54No.
23:56Today, I will say, I wish we were there now.
23:59Good luck out there, babe.
24:00Just a few more weeks until we get some of that fresh Colorado air.
24:05Good luck out there, babe.
24:17Good luck out there, babe.
24:27Today is a great day at the Mountain House because we're getting to see the progress on the big cottage.
24:48Steve, this already looks night and day different just with the painted ceiling.
24:52It's really pretty.
24:54The large cottage has been kind of where we leave all of the materials.
24:59So every time we've come here, it's nothing.
25:01It's our headquarters.
25:01Yeah.
25:01It's our little baby headquarters.
25:02It's like nothing's really happened in here.
25:04This time though, Laura is here.
25:07And while we're together, we're trying to tackle every single thing in this space
25:11so that Steve knows how to keep moving forward.
25:14One thing, what I'm seeing is too yellow on the wall, which is honestly what I was worried about.
25:19Definitely your call.
25:21Okay, let's look at these other samples.
25:23These were two that you chose for the lower, for the main house.
25:25So I mean, hold one up.
25:27Yeah, maybe right here.
25:28Okay.
25:30That makes it feel cooler.
25:31It feels like concrete almost.
25:33You don't want it to look like concrete walls.
25:35It's getting Adobe-ish too.
25:36Do you think, um, yeah.
25:38I'm sure that may be too white, but let's see.
25:40This was that cream color.
25:45Is that too white?
25:46Uh-oh.
25:47I can see it in your eyes.
25:49You're thinking about it.
25:52Am I going to like this plaster?
25:54What do you want to think about it in the context of the Roman shades?
25:57Like, yes.
25:58So, reminder, this will be green.
26:01Green.
26:02Green.
26:05It's too cold in here.
26:06Yeah.
26:06It's not the right tone.
26:08Do you think with it next to the yellow?
26:11Is that what I'm seeing?
26:12I'm just wondering, because that's what, it plays games on you.
26:15See, sorry.
26:15The colors go in there.
26:16Yeah.
26:17Same color?
26:19Yeah.
26:19This might be a cleaner way to see it.
26:21Okay.
26:23Now you can get a feel for it next to the green.
26:25This looks good next to the green, actually.
26:27It really does.
26:28Okay, fine.
26:28Yeah, it's good.
26:29Mm-hmm.
26:29Hurry, let's move on before I change my mind.
26:31And I like the gingham with it.
26:32I do too.
26:33So, Laura, you got to sign the back of this.
26:34I know, right?
26:36Get me out of here.
26:39I love our Dutch door that we got from the kitchen.
26:43And now it works perfectly.
26:45My little bear can climb in and some honey.
26:48You're going to name it one of these days.
26:49Oh, yeah.
26:50I'm going to try to get him to really love me.
26:52Shall we go see the bathroom?
26:53Yes.
26:53We have some of your Kyle up on the wall.
26:57So, I've only ever seen this on the floor and I was scared.
27:00But I love it on the walls.
27:02Oh, it's really sweet.
27:03It's really sweet.
27:04It's so pretty.
27:05You know, this bathroom is so tiny and kind of forgetful,
27:08but this is like a statement.
27:09Yeah.
27:10It really is.
27:13Chip's bringing those lights.
27:14I do want to see the scale of those in the space.
27:16Let's go in there.
27:17Let's see those.
27:18Joey.
27:19Hey, bud.
27:19We're right here.
27:20Oh, look at what I got.
27:22Steve.
27:23Uh-oh.
27:23Man, feel how heavy these bad boys are.
27:25Where did you find these?
27:26Marfa, Texas.
27:27Love these.
27:28The town there's no way you've ever heard of.
27:29I've never heard of it.
27:30There's no way.
27:31How did you end up there?
27:33Yeah.
27:33So road trip.
27:35Road trip.
27:35For Father's Day, Chip asked the kids for a week-long road trip.
27:39And I get this video of Chip in an antique shop.
27:42Look at this place, y'all.
27:44Where are we at?
27:45What planet are we on?
27:47We are in Marfa, Texas.
27:49It was basically an abandoned lumber yard.
27:51And each of these little cubicles that used to house lumber
27:55are now filled with something you don't even know what's in it.
27:58Oh, my gosh.
27:59Look at that.
28:00These are sconces from light fixtures.
28:04And he asked if I wanted to buy everything in the room.
28:08And I said, no.
28:09He said, okay, what about in this one section?
28:11There was all these light fixtures.
28:12And I said, okay, let's just give them that.
28:14So I said, sure, buy the light fixtures.
28:16I had no idea what they looked like.
28:17Chip found gold with these light fixtures in Marfa, Texas.
28:21If you look at this doorway, Steve, it's just like a little like that.
28:24Like six, eight inches.
28:25Oh, yeah, just a little bit above the header.
28:26I mean, the reality are these light fixtures are really old.
28:29There's no wiring.
28:30So we have to get these lights completely rewired,
28:33get them functioning again so they're safe for the space.
28:36This is the only dilemma, though,
28:38because we've already chose our green in here.
28:40Okay, yeah.
28:40These don't match that.
28:41I can only imagine.
28:42Steve, can you get someone to, like, powder coat these,
28:45like a nice, glossy cream color?
28:48Oh, yeah.
28:49Just the shade.
28:50You hate the color enough?
28:52I don't hate the color.
28:52I actually love the color.
28:53I kind of do, too.
28:54What if we wire them and hang them and then we can run?
28:58Uh-oh, Laura.
28:59Hey, quit being a brat.
29:02We're going to form teams here in a minute.
29:03Oh, no.
29:04The green.
29:05We're going to get outvoted, Steve.
29:06It's just the green with that is because these cabinets are green.
29:10It's just a lot of green in here.
29:11I get you.
29:11Let me see.
29:12Is that door the same green?
29:14And for y'all, that contrasts too much.
29:16It's a different vibe.
29:17It's a different look.
29:17I feel like leaving this raw and then going sour cream,
29:21it'll literally be the cherry on top.
29:23Man, these things are cool.
29:24So I'm excited about this space.
29:26This feels like if we have friends and family over,
29:28this is a nice little spot.
29:30I love seeing how it's all coming together.
29:32Steve, this place looks awesome.
29:33Coming together.
29:34Leaving you with these.
29:35It's a plaster.
29:36You're going to get me a cream.
29:37Right?
29:38That's it.
29:38I think that's it.
29:39Okay.
29:39Awesome.
29:40Awesome.
29:41I'm going to get out of y'all's hair.
29:42All right.
29:42We'll see you later.
29:43Bye.
29:44I feel like the next time we come and see this,
29:46it'll be completely done.
29:57I don't know if you guys can hear that noise in the distance,
29:59but that's the peaceful hum of no wives or children nagging at us.
30:04What?
30:05Oh, sorry, Joe.
30:06I didn't see you there.
30:07We're here with our couple friends.
30:10We wanted to show them the mountain house at this stage so that they could really appreciate
30:15the after.
30:16And today I thought it'd be fun to bring in a fly fishing expert to teach the boys a few things.
30:20We're excited to be here.
30:22Thank you for having us.
30:23Well, it's my pleasure.
30:24Genuinely, it's a beautiful section of river and where we are makes for really good trout habitat.
30:28This is exciting, man.
30:29That's a special spot.
30:30I keep looking.
30:31You look like the Top Gun of fly fishing.
30:34I thought this was the coolest outfit on the market.
30:36I told her I thought we were scuba diving.
30:38I mean, do I look like an idiot?
30:40You look like Christopher Lloyd in Back and Future.
30:42You don't look dumb.
30:43You just look overprepared.
30:44Overprepared.
30:45You have to be overdressed and underdressed.
30:46Okay.
30:47All right.
30:47Fair enough.
30:48These are waders that you can see that I'm wearing a very thorough set of waders.
30:54W-A-D-D-E-R-S, waders.
30:58It's like a rancher and an astronaut had a baby.
31:01I feel like I want to come in almost like slow motion.
31:04Like, I think I'm going to start a new trend with these bad boys.
31:07I feel, dare I say, sexy.
31:10We're going to have fun.
31:11Thank you, Jared.
31:11Babe, thanks for setting this up.
31:12We're excited.
31:13While he's doing that, Steve is going to show me some wood samples,
31:15and I think he may have figured out a solution for matching the different colored beams.
31:20Isn't that fun?
31:21That's like a picture-perfect moment right there, Steve.
31:23Well, I hope it's what you wanted.
31:24It's gorgeous.
31:25On this side, we have some up for you.
31:27Oh, my goodness.
31:28So, this is actually what's on the walls.
31:30It's what's going to go on the walls.
31:32So, we've got this mill from 12 by 12 Oath Beams from California, an old steel factory.
31:37They're like 90 years old.
31:39I love the cracks.
31:41That is like character.
31:42Every piece is its own thing.
31:44Almost every room in the house is going to have some of this.
31:46I love that.
31:49I brought you some stain samples.
31:51Oh, I love it.
31:52All your mill work.
31:53Okay.
31:53So, I like this one.
31:55We're just going to kind of go one by one.
31:56I feel like this is too yellow.
31:58Mm-hmm.
31:59So, I'm just going to eliminate as we go.
32:01I know we were originally thinking more of a natural.
32:03Keep it coming.
32:03Some of these have gotten really dark.
32:05Yeah.
32:06I feel like...
32:07You want me to hold a few up for you?
32:08I mean, I think I know.
32:09You're good.
32:10You already made a choice?
32:11I feel like I'm seeing the one I really like.
32:13Steve had about six or seven samples.
32:15I saw the one I wanted.
32:17He kept passing them to me, but I was like, this is the one.
32:20I'm wanting it more Swiss Chalet than like Mountain House, like Lodgy.
32:25So, the lightness.
32:26I feel like I'm gravitating towards the more natural, the better.
32:31These are the right colors.
32:32Right.
32:33Can you take these two?
32:35Let me hold them up.
32:36I would say that right piece, that's like the perfect tone.
32:40So, this is like our control tone.
32:42Yep.
32:43The one on my left hand, this is already sealed with a natural.
32:45So, it's changed the color a bit.
32:47This is raw in my right hand, and this vertical is raw.
32:51When I look at the board and then your samples, it's a family.
32:55I definitely want that natural stain on the bottom sample.
32:59Typically, when I do wood in a house, I'll pick specific spots.
33:04In this space, I really wanted a lot of wood on the walls, a lot of that warmth coming in
33:09with that natural material, especially because this is what you see on the outside.
33:13This is how I like to get in touch with nature.
33:16Chip is more hands-on.
33:18I like to learn by doing.
33:19So, we'll walk down in there.
33:22Oh, man.
33:23This does feel crisp and refreshing, doesn't it?
33:25Yeah.
33:26Wow.
33:26To me, it's like, yeah, we'll catch fish.
33:29But like, where we are.
33:30Who cares?
33:30Yeah, who cares?
33:31That's icing on the cake, right?
33:33Yeah.
33:36When you're up to bat playing baseball, do you watch the face of the bat?
33:39No.
33:39No, you look for the ball.
33:40Right, for sure.
33:41Right?
33:42Now, with casting, same thing.
33:43I want you to be looking where you want the fly to land, right?
33:46Okay.
33:46Before anything, don't overthink it.
33:48Just play around a little bit.
33:50Look at that, Chip.
33:51Hey, it's like a model.
33:54Yeah.
33:56Remember what that felt like.
33:58That was awesome.
33:59There is no doubt that we're having more fun than Joe.
34:02Steve, with the red rock, the reddish, dark stain on the beams, I'm nervous.
34:13It's going to pull too red, and I like the blonde.
34:16One of the things that I've always known was going to come to an actual design dilemma was
34:21the color of the existing beams.
34:23It's almost like this really saturated stain that they put on the beams, and it just felt like too dark.
34:30Now that I see the wood that we're using, I know I'm going to go with a natural finish.
34:34I just feel like I keep butting into that contrast of the dark and the light.
34:38Hey, I want to show you what we came up with to match the existing beams to the hand-hewn.
34:43It's really kind of creative.
34:44We've got this faux painter that's been working on some samples, and I think they're a perfect match.
34:49If you're saying he can replicate this up there, I'd almost rather it go away than
34:55highlight all of the contrast that's happening in this small space.
34:58Yeah.
34:59Well, why don't I go show you what he's done?
35:00I think he's done a tremendous job.
35:04Let me introduce you to Chase.
35:06Hi.
35:06Hello.
35:07I'm Joe.
35:07Joe, nice to meet you.
35:08I'm Chase.
35:08Nice to meet you.
35:09Oh, I can't wait to see this.
35:09I can already tell.
35:10You gotta come back here and look.
35:12I brought Chase in here to faux paint the original beams so that it'll blend in with our hand-hewn.
35:17That, I'm like, which one's real?
35:19Right.
35:19How long does this take you per section?
35:22Per beam section, five to six hours.
35:26It's literally, like, it is art.
35:29We'll mix our glazes and our color palette, which you see here.
35:33Cool.
35:33That is awesome.
35:34And it's just all the colors of the oak beams that we're doing and the hand-hewns.
35:40So that little knot up there is art.
35:42That's not a real knot.
35:43That's a painted knot right here.
35:45That's a painted knot.
35:46Yeah.
35:46I mean, when you were suggesting this in my mind, I was like, we had this, like, authentic
35:52hand-hewn beams, this old oak.
35:54But when I saw them in the primary, I mean, I'm blown away.
35:57I can't.
35:58I'm like, I didn't know which one was real and which one was fake.
36:01So I think knowing that this is an option, we can really start tackling it space by space.
36:06Chase really solved the design dilemma.
36:08Now I get to keep this really tonal look, light wood.
36:11There's not going to be this huge contrast, which is really the goal.
36:14Oh, babe.
36:16Chip from Fly Fish Academy.
36:19Did you see that?
36:19Oh, that was so awesome.
36:21How much fun, scale of one to two?
36:22Babe, a thousand.
36:23Here you go.
36:25Nailed it.
36:25Very coachable.
36:26I was like this, and then you could, like, see the sunlight glistening off the line.
36:32It's heavenly, I bet.
36:33And then the line kind of floats out.
36:34Wait, how?
36:38I love the dance.
36:39It's such a dance.
36:40I love it.
36:41How are the boys doing down there?
36:42They're doing great.
36:43Tim caught one.
36:44Oh, what a beauty.
36:47We were so proud of him.
36:48Do you feel healed?
36:50I feel healed.
36:56We've had a good time in Colorado with our friends.
36:59Today, Chip and I are going to take one more look at the house before we head home.
37:02Steve has really pushed on the main house and even that medium cottage.
37:07But this little cottage still has a ways to go.
37:10I'm going to FaceTime Ella really quick while we're in here.
37:14Since the cottage is her little design project, I'm going to walk through it with her on the phone,
37:20just so she has a sense that she's a part of this.
37:23You can see, though, how this room was really like storage, but now we got to start moving on it.
37:29Hi, Ella.
37:32Hi.
37:33I'm in the little cottage here at the mountain house, and this is me making sure I've got
37:39everything that you're wanting down so I can communicate this with Steve.
37:44All the paint in here is that really pretty green on the walls, green on the ceilings.
37:50These are the floors, Ella.
37:52Are you okay if we sand these down and just refinish them?
37:56Yes.
37:57Or is that long pause and no?
38:00No, I like the floors.
38:02Okay, good.
38:02Okay.
38:03Now I want to show you the opening that you asked for.
38:06They took the closet doors off.
38:08Look how cute.
38:09Ella and I have been working on this design plan.
38:12I really wanted her to lead, though, so for me it's stepping back.
38:15And where she wants help or she wants a suggestion,
38:18I'll step in, but I've really tried to shut my mouth.
38:21Look at all your cabinets.
38:23And I know you wanted new hardware because this felt a little too,
38:27what is that word?
38:27Mm-hmm.
38:28Aggressive.
38:30And then in here, Ella, just that fun floor tile.
38:33The shower is on, which is, sorry about that, but it works.
38:41There's a lot more happening on the main cottage and the big house.
38:45This one's kind of the last thing, but I feel like we're moving in the right direction.
38:50And I think you're going to love it.
38:52Now that I know that Ella's happy with the structure, when I get back to Waco,
38:55we can really start to think about the furniture.
38:57Getting to create a very sweet, beautiful story in this little quirky cottage is just
39:03a fun thing that I get to do with Ella, and I've just loved it.
39:06Okay.
39:06Love you.
39:07I love you too.
39:07Bye, Ella.
39:16Where's old Steve?
39:17Hi, Steve.
39:18What else do you want to show us while you've got us?
39:20Let's go through the reading room first.
39:26In here, we're going with all paint grade, tongue and groove, redoing the whole thing.
39:32This will be where your new gas burner will be, which is really cool.
39:35Yeah, I'm excited about that little thing, yeah.
39:36So we saved all the old red rock when we tore this thing apart.
39:39We're going to rebuild this thing and make it look whole again and take it right to the new wall.
39:43Sweet.
39:44This will be a notebook case that we're going to do out of the same stuff on the walls,
39:47and it'll be really nice. It'll slide in like a piece of furniture.
39:50Let's go.
39:51I love this little room.
39:52Can I just sneak through here?
39:53Sure.
39:53Now we're in the toilet room?
39:55You're in the primary toilet room.
39:56Yeah. Oh, this feels so good. I love it.
39:59I feel like we have a lot of space in this bathroom.
40:01It really is roomy.
40:02Crazy. Closet. I love this arch in the shower.
40:06I think that's so pretty.
40:07For sure.
40:08Once we get all this reclaimed wood on the walls and then the plaster and all the other elements.
40:11It's going to feel like a big warm hug.
40:13Exactly.
40:14That's what I wanted.
40:15I'm just so excited about the direction that this project is going.
40:18Our little primary suite is going to be perfect for us.
40:21Looks great. Looks sharp.
40:23I love the beams.
40:24These hand-hewn beams look really good.
40:27They turned out well.
40:28That's awesome.
40:30Right.
40:30But I feel like everything is just moving along now that your mechanical's all installed.
40:34We're getting to the point we can start closing walls up.
40:37And that's where it's really going to change.
40:38When do the windows and doors come in?
40:40They're coming within 10 to 14 days.
40:42Okay.
40:43They'll be on site.
40:43I'd love to get those in.
40:44Then we get rid of all the plastic.
40:45Heck yeah.
40:46Then we can start finishing up the siding.
40:48We got a lot of work on top of that.
40:50Well, if you know your windows and doors are coming, the wood's here for the ceiling.
40:54Any major hiccup where you're like, this is the only variable.
40:58Yeah.
40:58What are you thinking?
41:00The fireplace has me up at night.
41:01Okay.
41:02Because it's stuck in permitting.
41:03Limbo.
41:04It's in zoning.
41:05We have to address it now.
41:06Since it's 11 by 4, we're adding on 44 square feet to the house.
41:10Okay.
41:11We have the availability, but they've got to go through all of their processes to approve
41:15that 44 square feet.
41:16Jeez.
41:16And so that's where it's at today.
41:18I checked on it yesterday.
41:19I see.
41:19We've got it framed.
41:20We've got it ready to go.
41:21Yeah.
41:22Everything else is good to go.
41:23But we've got to get the fireplace in because that impacts all of our stonework inside.
41:27It impacts all of the trim work on that wall.
41:29Yeah, for sure.
41:30There's a lot of components that come together on that.
41:32A hundred percent.
41:33So that's what keeps me up at night.
41:35If you had to bet a hundred bucks, you think the go-aheads in a couple of days,
41:39a couple of weeks, where are you feeling on that?
41:40Knowing the county, probably a couple of weeks.
41:42A couple of weeks.
41:43The biggest variable is the fireplace, upstairs and downstairs.
41:47If those permits don't come through soon, we might not be able to finish by first snow.
41:52Other than that, I feel like it's smooth sailing from here, but I shouldn't have said that out loud.
41:57Other than that, it's going to be great.
41:59You're going to jinx yourself?
42:00I don't want to jinx myself, but I feel like I can start seeing it.
42:03When I come back, I'm hoping by that point, a lot of the walls will be closed in.
42:07Hopefully, the windows will be in.
42:08Hopefully, we'll know about the fireplace.
42:10All right.
42:11We'll see you again soon.
42:12See you back, guys.
42:12Thank you, Steve.
42:12Bless you, Steve.
42:13See ya.
42:14I'm excited about coming back in the next few weeks.
42:24We got a lot going on, so get ready to enter the beehives.
42:27Oh, man.
42:28Oh, hi, guys.
42:30How hard to do this downstairs.
42:33Look at this, y'all.
42:35There's a lot of things happening on the main house and in the cabins.
42:40Did we have more candlesticks?
42:42I feel like I'm the design intern.
42:44Joe has this ability to take something across the finish line.
42:48I feel like we're going to make it, but in the meantime, it's a bit of a dance.
42:51I'm trying to be a blessing to Steve.
