00:00Good morning, welcome to your latest weather forecast from the Met Office.
00:04Well today marks the winter solstice across the Northern Hemisphere and for a lot of the
00:08UK daylight is certainly going to be in short supply.
00:11Lots of us are going to see plenty of cloud and that cloud will be quite low in places
00:15to give a quite a murky day with some outbreaks of rain and drizzle.
00:20Some heavy rain also developing across Devon and Cornwall as the day goes on with the best
00:24of any sunshine really for Northern Ireland, parts of North West Scotland and maybe also
00:28Cumbria from time to time.
00:31But with winter coming in from the south, it's going to be a fairly mild day for the time
00:35of year.
00:36Highs reaching around 8 to 11 degrees but I think if you are stuck under the cloud it may
00:40feel a little bit cooler than what these temperatures are suggesting.
00:44Into this evening we'll see further rain move up from the south, again some of this rain could
00:48potentially be on the heavy side and either side of it there's still going to be a lot
00:52of mist and murk around.
00:54We may start to see skies clear later on down towards the south east but we may just see
00:59a few mist and fog patches reform here before we reach dawn on Monday morning.
01:04But with lots of cloud and rain around it's going to be a mild night for the time of year.
01:09Lows much lower than around 5 to 7 degrees and actually for some of us these are kind of
01:13our expected daytime highs for this time of year rather than our lows.
01:18So we start the day on Monday on a mild but rather grey and murky note.
01:22Heaviest of the rain initially across Scotland but that should gradually clear northwards as
01:26the day goes on.
01:28Some sunshine developing across the Midlands, East Anglia and the south east but the cloud
01:32may well reform here as the day goes on.
01:34But it should be relatively dry across the south for most of the day.
01:40Temperatures again on the mild side.
01:41Highs reaching around 8 to 11 degrees across the board.
01:46But this is set to change as we head towards Christmas itself.
01:50We start to see high pressure begin to influence our weather from Scandinavia.
01:54As it does so it drags in some colder air from the near continent.
01:58The isobars are also tightly packed together by Christmas Eve so indicating some fairly windy
02:03conditions for time too.
02:05So that may enhance the cold feel with the wind chill with slightly lighter winds further
02:09north.
02:10So all in all a much colder spell of weather heading our way.
02:13Certainly much colder than what we have experienced so far this month.
02:16But we'll keep you up to date with the latest Christmas forecast over the coming days and
02:19you can always check out your local forecast on our website.
02:22But from me for now take care and I'll see you again soon.
