00:00¡Let's go!
00:01Nice to meet you.
00:02Nice to meet you guys.
00:03It's Gonzalo from Hypertextual.
00:04Welcome to Madrid.
00:05Thank you.
00:06So happy to be here.
00:06Hope you are having a good time here.
00:08Yeah, the best.
00:10So I would like to start, guys.
00:11You're adopting now the second book,
00:13The Sea of Monsters.
00:15I guess it's bigger, it's darker.
00:18How is it different, the series?
00:20How will it change from Season 1?
00:23I think the big change is if, you know,
00:27Season 1, you were going across America
00:30in this road trip and discovering
00:31the mythological world,
00:34hiding behind, you know,
00:37places that were familiar to us, right?
00:40And in this season, pretty early on,
00:42they sail off the map into fantastical worlds
00:44that they've never seen before.
00:47And that, I think, is a big change.
00:49And they're really kind of on their own.
00:51And the gods are holding back
00:52a little bit more this season.
00:54That's great.
00:55I was talking with Reed.
00:56Now I want to ask you,
00:58what do you have to keep in mind
00:59when adapting a book into another format,
01:01a TV show or into a movie?
01:03What do you have to keep in mind
01:04to try to keep the essence of it?
01:07I think trying to re-experience that book
01:13to pay attention to how it makes you feel,
01:16I think, is really the key.
01:18I think that that is what you're trying to achieve
01:22by different means
01:23in adapting it to a new medium.
01:25I think everything else
01:26really ought to be,
01:30at least in some way,
01:32up for negotiation.
01:33If it serves replicating that feeling,
01:37I think that is the measure
01:39of it being truly faithful
01:40to its source material.
01:42I think that there are other considerations.
01:45And I think when you have something
01:47that has meant so much to so many people
01:50like this story and this book,
01:54I think you're also trying to make sure
01:56that nobody comes to this.
01:59Having been wishing and hoping
02:01to see something since they first opened the book
02:03as a kid that you're not putting on screen.
02:06And I think that the balancing of that,
02:09of trying to keep its spirit in the right place
02:11and also make sure
02:12that it's as rewarding, I think, to a fan
02:17as it is true to the book,
02:19is what makes it a challenge.
02:22That's a great philosophy, actually.
02:24So I would like to ask,
02:27was it a bigger challenge,
02:28this second book,
02:29compared to the first one?
02:31Or how, I don't know,
02:33have you felt like this search
02:37for the essence of the book
02:39in order not to mess with the fandom
02:41and all that?
02:42Has it been easier for you guys?
02:44Or how has it been?
02:45I think they're all hard in their own way.
02:48I think this was a story written as a book.
02:55I think there wasn't really,
02:59it wasn't planned to be a book
03:00that turned into a show.
03:01And so you're always sort of trying
03:02to get into the guts of it
03:03and figure out how to make that work.
03:07I think it's certainly a lot bigger.
03:13So I think that challenge is...
03:15I think the first season
03:19is always the hardest
03:20because you're casting it.
03:22You're beginning it.
03:24You're learning.
03:25You're seeing step by step what it is.
03:27And once you've gotten at least that
03:30and you know that it's been accepted,
03:33then that gives you the place
03:37to move forward.
03:37Before, you're kind of just moving
03:39into the dark.
03:40Talking about that,
03:42do the expectations change
03:43from one season to the other?
03:45Because now, as you were saying,
03:46it has been a success.
03:47You know that.
03:48I guess you can be almost secure about it.
03:51Are your expectations different
03:52from first season to the next one?
03:56Yeah.
03:57I don't think you're ever that secure
03:58because you always want
03:59to better yourself, right?
04:01You always...
04:02The benefit of being in TV
04:03is that we get another shot
04:04of how do we continue
04:05to evolve this and grow it.
04:08And I think even the cast,
04:09you can see it in their performances.
04:11They've taken that time off in between
04:13and then how they've grown as people
04:15and the level of commitment.
04:18They had it in season one,
04:19but now it's even like,
04:20you know, I think their passion for it
04:22even just keeps growing.
04:24And so it is...
04:26I don't know.
04:26You always want to just keep
04:29doing a great job
04:30and you feel the responsibility
04:31to the fans
04:32and to the story.
04:36And so this season was just...
04:37I mean, it's a massive undertaking.
04:40And I think a lot of the set pieces
04:41and a lot of the movements
04:44through this adventure
04:44are just a lot more complicated.
04:47So we had to figure out
04:48a lot of things
04:49that we hadn't done in season one,
04:51but also everything we learned
04:52from season one,
04:54you know,
04:54came over beautifully
04:56into season two.
04:57How do you guys talk about...
04:59I don't know if call it a problem
05:01or an issue,
05:02but I mean,
05:03the main cast, the actors,
05:04are kids and now are growing up
05:06from one season to another.
05:08Has it been an issue for you
05:09in a way?
05:10Or have you talked about it?
05:11Because you are also developing
05:12season three right now.
05:13What do you mean?
05:13What are you talking about?
05:14I think it'd be a lot weirder
05:15if they didn't.
05:17Especially in a...
05:18You know,
05:18I think this is a story
05:19about kids growing up.
05:20And I think, you know,
05:22the speed at which they grow up
05:23is largely,
05:25if not entirely,
05:26out of our control.
05:27But I think the fact
05:28that they are
05:29and the fact that each season
05:30feels like
05:31as the issues
05:33that they're dealing with
05:33become a little more
05:35grown up
05:36and as the process
05:38of growing up
05:40is really the guts
05:42of the story,
05:43you're watching these kids
05:44live it.
05:45And so,
05:46you know,
05:47we certainly don't want,
05:48you know,
05:49for Walker
05:52to be renting cars
05:53and sending his kids
05:54to college
05:55while we're still
05:56making the show.
05:57But I do think
05:58the fact that it feels
06:00like it's growing up
06:00at the same time
06:01is important.
06:02I guess it can be
06:03beautiful in a way
06:04also to watch them
06:05growing up.
06:07If season one
06:08was about,
06:09in a way,
06:09self-discovery,
06:11what's the lesson
06:12for the second season?
06:13What's the journey
06:14that Percy
06:15and also the audiences
06:15will experiment
06:16in this?
06:18I think, you know,
06:19in season one,
06:19Percy finds out
06:21that he is part
06:24of this amazing world
06:25that was lurking
06:27just behind
06:27things that he could see.
06:30And season two
06:31is about
06:31where do I fit
06:33in that world?
06:34I know I'm part
06:35of it now,
06:35but where am I in it?
06:36Am I just,
06:37you know,
06:38a guy on the side?
06:39Am I the central figure
06:41of it?
06:42You know?
06:43Is it someone else?
06:44Am I the bad guy
06:48of this world?
06:49These are the things
06:50where now it's,
06:52before he's ready to,
06:53he's being asked
06:54those questions.
06:55That's great.
06:56I want,
06:57now that you are
06:57into mythology,
06:59I want to ask you
06:59about it
07:00because what do you
07:02think that still
07:03resonates from
07:04the ancient Greeks
07:04to nowadays,
07:05modern era?
07:06What does mythology
07:07still resonate
07:08all over the world?
07:10I think those stories
07:13are true.
07:13I think they are
07:15a really clear
07:17and at the same time
07:20mysterious
07:21and powerful expression
07:24of what it is
07:25to be a person.
07:27And I think
07:28there's a reason
07:29why they're still around.
07:30There's a reason
07:30why they've been adapted
07:31thousands of times
07:33over thousands of years.
07:34I think what's
07:36really exciting
07:36about this
07:37is to be able
07:38to take that tradition
07:40and that narrative
07:41and bring this
07:43new thing to it,
07:44bring these characters
07:45that Rick created
07:46and this tone.
07:48I think that I had
07:49never seen applied
07:50to those stories
07:51and as true
07:53as we're trying
07:54to be,
07:54I think,
07:54to Rick's books,
07:56I think we're
07:57spending as much energy
07:58trying to be true
07:58to the original
08:01source material
08:02and to that tradition
08:04and make sure
08:07that these stories
08:08are in conversation
08:09with them
08:10more than using them
08:12as fodder
08:14for our fun show.
08:15That is beautiful.
08:17Do you feel
08:18that superheroes,
08:20it's something that
08:21a lot of people say
08:22nowadays,
08:22superheroes are like
08:23the modern mythology.
08:25Do you agree
08:25with that sentence
08:26or do you feel
08:27that are completely
08:28separate things?
08:29It is like
08:30DC Comics
08:31absolutely based
08:32their heroes
08:34on the Greek myths.
08:36Marvel.
08:37Marvel, you know.
08:40And so,
08:41you know,
08:42they're taking
08:44from that,
08:46here's the pantheon,
08:47here's the younger generation.
08:51So,
08:52I think that they are
08:53another way
08:54of telling
08:54those same stories.
08:56That's right.
08:57And what's special
08:57about Percy Jackson
08:59as a way
08:59to give
09:01to young audiences
09:02the mythos
09:05of the Greeks?
09:06What's special?
09:07How did you
09:07fell in love
09:08with Percy Jackson
09:08in the first place?
09:12You can be part of it.
09:13Yeah, I think he is.
09:15You can imagine
09:15yourself into it.
09:16He is
09:16intensely relatable
09:18and is
09:20such an easy
09:22to invest
09:24in vehicle
09:24for a story
09:25about not fitting in
09:26or about feeling
09:27like there's
09:30something
09:30that makes you
09:32different,
09:32something that makes
09:33you less than,
09:34while still having
09:35that spirit
09:36and that charm
09:37and that
09:38confidence,
09:41I guess.
09:42The collision
09:43of all of those
09:44feelings, I think,
09:44just makes for
09:45somebody you want
09:45to go on a ride with.
09:47That's great.
09:47That's great.
09:49Now I want to
09:49finish by asking you
09:51about season three,
09:52of course,
09:52as I guess
09:53all my colleagues
09:54have done.
09:55You have cast
09:56Daphne Keane,
09:57Spanish,
09:58to Artemis,
09:59so how is it
09:59going for now?
10:02It's going great.
10:03We're like
10:03almost two-thirds
10:05of the way
10:05through shooting,
10:06so we're going
10:07back again in January
10:08to finish the season,
10:10but we always
10:12talk about this season
10:13as the season
10:14of the cast.
10:14It has exploded.
10:17There's so many new,
10:17we end up meeting
10:18all the gods,
10:19which Daphne comes
10:21in as Artemis,
10:22and she's outstanding.
10:25And we meet
10:27the hunters,
10:28Artemis' hunters,
10:29and we meet
10:30Nico and Bianca,
10:31who are fan favorites,
10:33and we meet,
10:33it just keeps
10:34getting bigger
10:35and bigger,
10:36but what's awesome
10:37about that is just
10:38the world is expanding,
10:40and there's so many
10:41more avenues
10:41of story to tell,
10:43so we're pretty
10:44excited about
10:45season three,
10:46and hopefully
10:48we get to keep
10:48telling the story.
10:49Hopefully,
10:50hopefully.
10:50Fingers crossed.
