00:00Bueno, Mr. Riordan, es Gonzalo de Hipertextual.
00:02Bienvenidos a España.
00:04Muchas gracias.
00:05Congratulations.
00:06The season is, again, so fantastic, so amazing.
00:08Thank you.
00:09I would like to start by asking you,
00:13is it easier for you to write books,
00:15as you are the creator of the novels,
00:17or is it easier to write a TV show,
00:20to create it in another format?
00:24Well, I mean, it depends on which way I look at it, I suppose.
00:29It is easier for me to write books,
00:31because when I'm writing books, it's just me,
00:35and I don't need to have meetings with executives
00:39and have, you know, notes, calls, I just write the book.
00:44So in that way, it's easier.
00:46Now, if I were trying to write the TV show myself,
00:50that would be impossible.
00:52I would find that so hard, and just, I couldn't do it.
00:55So I'm very lucky that I'm not responsible
00:57for all of that writing.
00:58We have a wonderful team, a crew,
01:02we have a writer's room,
01:04and my job with that is simply to kind of be a guide,
01:08to be an advisor on the world of Percy Jackson.
01:12So I read everything.
01:14I read all outlines, every version of the script,
01:18and when needed, I will give notes.
01:20I will say, maybe Percy wouldn't say it that way,
01:24maybe he would say it this way.
01:26Or if it's a mythology thing, I might say,
01:29oh, no, we can't do that,
01:30because Artemis doesn't have children,
01:32so you can't say that.
01:34So that's my role in it.
01:37So in some sense, it's easier to advise than to write.
01:41But in other ways, you know,
01:43at the core, I'm a writer of books,
01:45and I enjoy that.
01:45So that's the thing I wanted to ask you,
01:48because on one side I wanted to ask about
01:50how many times do you have to kind of give in
01:53when you need to do some changes from the book?
01:56And also, what do you have to keep in mind
01:59in order to translate the...
02:00Yeah, I often compare it to learning another language.
02:05For me, anyway, when I'm going from book writing
02:09to learning about television,
02:12it was very difficult for me.
02:14I had to learn a lot in a very short amount of time
02:18and learn a new language of how stories are created.
02:25And it did not come naturally to me.
02:27So I'm very fortunate that the crew was patient with me
02:29and that they helped me to learn as much as I did.
02:33One thing I have to keep in mind
02:34is that when I'm writing a book,
02:38the writing is the final product.
02:40It is the goal of what I do.
02:43When someone is writing for television,
02:46writing is never the final product.
02:48It is only a way to get to the screen.
02:53And that was a revelation to me.
02:55It's like, oh, that's why when they look at a book,
02:58they don't see something that needs to be exactly like this.
03:02You know, it's like a script to them.
03:03It's like, okay, we can change this however it makes sense to us.
03:06It's like, oh, that's why.
03:09But I think as long as the tone is correct,
03:11as long as the major story is what it is in the books,
03:17I think that's okay.
03:18I don't mind changing small details.
03:20I understand that we can't do everything,
03:22as long as Percy Jackson feels like Percy Jackson.
03:27That's really interesting, actually.
03:28Now you're releasing the second season.
03:31You are also developing the third one right now.
03:33Do you feel that you have changed as the creator of the series
03:38from when you started with season one?
03:41Oh, I think so, yes.
03:43One thing that has changed is I'm learning to be more efficient
03:48in the ways that I help.
03:50The first season, for me, I was on set a great deal,
03:56and I was trying to learn about everything
03:58and trying to advise about everything,
04:02about costumes, directing, lighting.
04:05I don't know anything about directing.
04:07So I finally learned that it's okay to let that stuff go.
04:13I don't know those things.
04:15I'm only going to concentrate where I can help,
04:18which is mostly with scripts and to a degree with casting.
04:23I can advise on which actors I like the best.
04:28That's great.
04:28Talking about the actors,
04:30I would like to know if you guys have talked about
04:33something that is kind of natural,
04:36but from season one to season two,
04:38and I guess from season three,
04:40your actors are growing up.
04:42So I don't know if for you guys it's kind of,
04:45I wouldn't say a problem, but an issue?
04:48Yeah, I think that's fair.
04:51It is an issue.
04:53I mean, for me, I guess I was naive.
04:58I thought, oh, you know, television will hire the actors.
05:01They'll start at the right age,
05:03and then we'll just do a season a year.
05:06No problem, because the books are that way.
05:08They age one year.
05:10I did not realize how slow
05:12the television-making process is,
05:16how complicated it is to make a season of television,
05:19especially a difficult, big show like this.
05:23It takes a long time.
05:25And so, yes, it is startling
05:27when you see how much the actors have grown in season two.
05:32There's not much we can do, you know,
05:35except just do the best we can.
05:37And I do tell myself that, well, you know,
05:40I remember when my children were growing up,
05:42and when they go away,
05:45like when they have the end of the school year,
05:47and they have summer break,
05:48and they come back at the beginning of the year,
05:50everybody says,
05:51oh, you're so much bigger and taller.
05:54You know, so that does happen.
05:55So I guess we just lean into that.
05:59That's great.
05:59That's actually great.
06:01Are the expectations different from season one to season two,
06:05because season one was a success?
06:07I guess there was kind of a...
06:09Now you are more secure about it,
06:11but have the expectations changed for you guys?
06:14I think for me personally,
06:17the expectations are simply that I always want to improve.
06:21I think that we are learning,
06:23all of us that are in the show,
06:25the actors are learning how...
06:27They're literally growing up,
06:29but they're also growing into their roles.
06:32They're learning how to do these roles better and better.
06:36We as writers are learning how do you take the book
06:40and translate it in the best way into scripts
06:44so that we're giving the actors the best possible lines.
06:47The whole crew is learning.
06:50So my goal, my expectations are simply,
06:53I want every season to feel better and faster
06:56and more interesting than the one that came before.
06:59That's great.
07:01If season one was about self-discovery in a way,
07:04I feel that the second book and the second season
07:07is a bit, I don't know, maybe darker.
07:10So what would you say is the lesson from The Sea of Monsters?
07:14The Sea of Monsters, I think, is about trust and friendship.
07:20We know...
07:21The characters know who they are now,
07:23but how do they react with one another?
07:27How do they learn to trust one another
07:29and to be honest with each other?
07:32There's a scene where, for instance,
07:35Annabeth has a prophecy.
07:37She knows a prophecy that Percy doesn't know.
07:41And Chiron tells her,
07:43you can't tell Percy.
07:45She struggles with that.
07:46She says, what do I do?
07:48And she tells Percy,
07:49I have information.
07:51I don't know if it's a good idea to tell you or not.
07:54So that's what it's about.
07:56It's about trusting.
07:57That is great.
07:58That's a great lesson, actually.
07:59I don't know if you can tell me anything about Season 3.
08:03How is it going?
08:05Sure, sure.
08:06What can we spend about it?
08:08Oh, it's amazing.
08:09I've been to set a couple of times already.
08:12They're well underway.
08:14They're filming,
08:16and I think they're over halfway through,
08:18I would say, the principal photography.
08:20It's looking incredible.
08:22I think that my expectations have been fulfilled
08:25when I talk about each season getting better.
08:28I think this is the best one yet, Season 3.
08:30I love the scripts.
08:32The sets that they have designed
08:35just blew my mind.
08:39You know, I look at them,
08:40and they say,
08:40do you have any suggestions?
08:42And I'm like, no.
08:44Do that.
08:45That's perfect.
08:46And the actors are incredible.
08:48So I'm so excited.
08:50That can be the biggest compliment
08:52from the writer of the book.
08:54Yeah, yeah.
08:56You're one of the greatest writers
08:58of mythology in the modern era,
09:00because you are.
09:01So I would like to ask you,
09:03why do you think that mythology
09:05still resonates nowadays?
09:06Yeah, it's very interesting.
09:09It's thousands of years later.
09:12And for some reason,
09:13we are still telling these stories.
09:15I think it's because mythology
09:17is really a way of looking
09:20at the human condition,
09:22but at a distance,
09:24so that it doesn't feel as threatening to us.
09:27The gods, the demigods, the monsters,
09:32you know, the psychologists like Freud
09:34would probably say,
09:34these are all things from our mind, right?
09:37But it's true.
09:39I mean, we have forces in the world
09:42that we can't control,
09:43not only outside,
09:44not only storms and the sea
09:47and droughts and all these things,
09:49but inside, anger, love, emotions.
09:53And they do sometimes feel like
09:55they come from outside us
09:56and they are affecting us.
09:58So the myths help us explain that.
10:01And the heroes give us models
10:03of what to do or what not to do
10:06to face these things.
10:08So I think that's why.
10:10There are ways of teaching ourselves
10:12what it is to be human.
10:14That's lovely, actually.
10:16I would like to end with a final question.
10:19Nowadays, a lot of people say
10:21that superheroes are like the modern mythology.
10:23Do you agree with that?
10:25Yes, absolutely, I do.
10:27I remember very early on,
10:30I was doing an event at a school
10:33and I was talking to the children
10:35about Percy Jackson.
10:37And I started with the question,
10:39if one of your parents was a god,
10:43who would you choose?
10:45And they were all so excited
10:46and one young boy went,
10:48Batman!
10:49And I said,
10:51very good answer!
10:53Because that's the same thing.
10:55It's a person who is bigger than life.
11:00So yes, absolutely,
11:02superheroes are just an extension of mythology,
11:06what we've always done.
11:07Completely agree with you.
