00:11Wednesday, on ID.
00:21I can already see a bunch of blood on the floor.
00:24The men had guns.
00:25They're screaming,
00:26Where's the money?
00:27With what money?
00:28Where's the fifty thousand dollars?
00:30I would never let anyone touch a hair on my brother's back.
00:33And I failed.
00:36This was a very cold-blooded killing.
00:39I was asking,
00:40Where is my son?
00:42Where is my son?
00:44It's a saying that Armenians have.
00:46God forbid you see the day your son or daughter dies.
00:50I couldn't do anything for my son.
00:53I couldn't help him.
00:55I bear the blame.
00:57It happened because of me.

02:27And everyone was talking about it.
02:29I've had thousands of cases over the years.
02:32But there are some cases that I will never forget.

03:29Because we were thinking about our future, our family.
03:44It's been a very long time since anyone has seen this album.
03:47I was clean and I found it.
03:49Sevan, he was 3 years old when we arrived in the United States.
04:01Two months later, I was with Chris.
04:04My brother told me that I had a brother.
04:09And I was ecstatic.
04:11I wanted someone to fight.
04:13This is my first day here.
04:18Sevan.
04:19Christopher, me and Carmen.
04:22It's a good memory.
04:24Sevan liked Christopher very much back then.
04:29He took care of Chris.
04:31I was the brother.
04:34I was the brother,
04:36so I always felt obligated
04:38To protect my brother in any way possible.
04:44Christopher was a good son.
04:46He had a big heart.
04:48He was the one who was going to hug my parents.
04:50He was the one who was going to drive my parents away.
04:52He was the one who was going to drive it away.
04:53I am not.
04:54He was the brother.
04:55Ele são descoa moi.
04:57He was a fool.
04:58I love it, I love it.
04:59He was an amateur.
05:00I love you.

07:07That morning I was driving to work, I was in a black-on-black BMW M3, I had just bought it, it was brand new.
07:16I was working full-time with my dad's company and I had gotten into flipping houses.
07:24So that new car, it was a milestone for me, I was very happy.
07:29I pulled over on the side of the road and I said a prayer.
07:37I hadn't prayed for a long time.
07:41I used to go to church a lot before, I used to preach when I was younger.
07:48I prayed a lot and I started reading the Bible and other books.
07:56For some reason I kind of felt distant.
08:00So I always felt guilty about that, that I left church.
08:04And it was three years later when I prayed for the first time.
08:11I don't remember the reason why I hadn't prayed to God, but that day I pulled over and I prayed.
08:22Prayed thanking him for the car, thanking him for my brother.
08:25And I prayed my brother would see some fruits of his work soon, because he was still in that adolescent period.
08:35You know, I was 20.
08:38And then I went to work and I went on with my day.
08:41That day, Chris had taken his mom's car for servicing.
08:50Carmen is getting ready.
08:52She owns a salon.
08:53She's waiting for him to return.
08:56It was 11:30 something.
08:59I was late because I have to go to work.
09:01I called Chris.
09:03Chris, hurry up.
09:04I have to go.
09:05And I said, mom, okay, okay, I'm coming.
09:08I'll be there in 20 minutes.
09:09There is a knock at the door.
09:20I'm going to look out.
09:23I said, yes.
09:24And I saw one guy over there.
09:29He said, "I came to see seven."
09:32I said, for what?
09:34For the construction.
09:35Please, ma'am, open the door.
09:37And, you know, it was Glendale.
09:40Everybody, they were Armenian.
09:42Everybody knows everybody.
09:46I opened the door a little bit.
09:51And that one opening of the door changed her life forever.
09:55The second guy, he pushed the door and came in with a silas gun.
10:06The men rush into the home, screaming.
10:09They clearly weren't friends.
10:11They were assailants.
10:12I was really shocked.
10:17I couldn't move.
10:18I didn't understand what's happening.
10:20I was very scared.
10:23I put the pillow on my face.
10:26I squeezed the pillow on my face.
10:29I said, are you quiet?
10:34They covered my eyes with a tape.
10:37They don't want her looking at their faces.
10:43Every time she tries to look up, they hit her.
10:48They pushed me to the bedrooms.
10:51They start screaming, asking, where is he?
10:54Where is he?
10:55Where did he put the money?
10:59What money?
11:01Where's the money?
11:02Where's the $50,000?
11:06I don't have that much money at home.
11:09Don't waste our time.
11:10Where's the $50,000?
11:12I swear we don't have that much money.
11:14I have $300 in cash.
11:21These guys start ransacking the house.
11:25They're opening up doors.
11:27They're looking for the money.
11:28They're looking for cash.
11:32Suddenly she hears someone walking into the home through the back door.
11:41And her heart just sinks because now it's no longer just her.
11:47I heard a noise.
11:48It was my son.
11:56Chris, he was very scared.
11:58He came and hugged me.
12:02Mom, I love you.
12:03Don't worry.
12:03I'm not going to let them hurt you.
12:07I love you.
12:07And he kissed me.
12:13I said, please let my son to sit close to me.
12:19And they didn't.
12:21They took my son out.
12:22He's taken him to the other room.
12:28She could hear a struggle.
12:33They were an animal.
12:37He's fighting.
12:38They're screaming.
12:39They're still asking for the money.
12:42He's offering them to take the TV, take anything you want.
12:45After Carmen Shanazari was attacked, her son, Chris, came home, went in the house, saw what was going on, and tried to come to her rescue.
13:08At that point, the assailant pulled Chris out of the bedroom, away from her, and took him to the other room.
13:24Pushing him, they're screaming at him for the $50,000.
13:27And Carmen hears her son saying, I don't know where the money is.
13:30I don't know what you're talking about.
13:31I'm yelling, Chris, please don't bother my son.
13:40Please don't bother him.
13:43Carmen hears a struggle.
13:45She knows her son's struggling with these men.
13:51And then Carmen hears a gunshot.
14:01After the gunshot, the man who was with her, leaves the room and rushes into the other room.
14:23And she takes that opportunity to run out.
14:25I just go out from the back door and yelling to help, help.
14:53Glendale PD showed up right away.
14:55It's a shot's fired.
14:57Quite a few officers agreed.
14:58Go ahead.
15:00And the police took me and said, I want to stay with my son.
15:07My son, I want to go to my son.
15:09I was just yelling that same thing.
15:16And the ambulance arrived.
15:19I'm about one out, 20.
15:22Got it.
15:23Dave took my son.
15:34I tried to go, and they didn't let me know.
15:37The next-door neighbor, I'm Bruce, who had come home for lunch that day.
15:51And he noticed there was a black Honda parked the wrong way.
15:55I noticed that it was running.
15:58Noticed that there was a person in the driver's seat.
16:00This gentleman was sitting right there in that front window.
16:07It's a kitchen table.
16:08And so he heard the shots being fired.
16:11He saw the suspects running out of the house.
16:17He saw jumping in the black Honda.
16:20And then the black Honda took off that way.
16:22They're worried about more home invasions.
16:38They weren't going to wait for these people to hide out, get away.
16:41They wanted someone arrested.
16:43I get a phone call from my dad saying that something's happened to the house.
16:53Go over there.
16:53I'll meet you.
16:57The street was blocked off.
17:01It was taped up.
17:03I couldn't get in.
17:05And all I could see is my mom crying.
17:13I came over there to see a lot of police around my house.
17:22They never let me go from the cross-section of my street to my house.
17:30I asked the detectives where my brother is.
17:35They told me, your brother got shot.
17:41They took him to the hospital.
17:43And my dad just started crying hysterically.
17:47And it was a different cry.
17:50It was almost as if he already knew.
17:52He already felt it, you know?
17:57I asked him which hospital.
17:58They didn't know until someone told me,
18:01if your brother got shot, try L.A. County Hospital.
18:06I just left.
18:06I got in the car and I left.
18:10I hit the 5 South as fast as I could.
18:14I was hitting 100 miles an hour down the freeway.
18:22They took me to the police station.
18:28They interviewed Carmen because their goal was to find out who these people were
18:38and how much she remembered about the faces.
18:41They needed descriptions of these people.
18:43And I was asking, where is my son?
18:50Where is my son?
19:00And they didn't say anything to me.
19:03They just keep questioning, questioning me.
19:06I drove up to the emergency room.
19:25I can already see a bunch of blood on the floor.
19:27There was a trail of blood going into the hospital.
19:36A stretcher with blood on it.
19:42I already knew.
19:44I knew it was my brother's blood.
19:46I told them who I was
20:03And they took me to a room.
20:06I was shaking the whole time.
20:11And the doctor came out.
20:16And then he told me,
20:21your brother got shot in the heart.
20:24And I tried.
20:25I tried everything I could.
20:29He didn't make it.
20:31I'm sorry.
20:31They asked me if I wanted to see him.
20:45I didn't want to see him.
20:48I didn't want to see him like that.
20:55I never thought that I would ever hear words like that.
20:57I would never let anyone touch a hair on my brother's back.
21:04I went so far my whole life
21:06to look after my little brother.
21:09It was my biggest fear and it came true.
21:12You know, losing my little brother.
21:21And I thought about my parents.
21:24I wanted to be able to comfort them as well.
21:27I couldn't do anything for my son.
21:54I couldn't help him.
21:55Still, we didn't believe what's happened.
22:07I mean, just thinking,
22:10I'm not going to see any more police.
22:13When I got into the police department
22:27and saw my parents,
22:30It was painful.
22:31It was very painful.
22:32because we were barely standing
22:35from what we had already gone through.
22:41Now the police department
22:42absolutely needed to find the assailant.
22:45This was a murder.
22:47It was no longer just an armed robbery.
22:49Police were going through the house
22:55looking for evidence.
22:56The police department
23:10trying to ask me questions about
23:12Do I have any enemies?
23:14Do I know anyone who would do this?
23:16When I heard that exact number,
23:2450,000
23:25I knew it had something to do with me.
23:28I had a falling out
23:32with someone I was doing business with.
23:38It was clear that they assumed
23:40that there was money in the house.
23:42Whoever told them
23:43that I had money in the house
23:45told them a certain amount,
23:47$50,000.
23:48And they were the only people
23:54that knew I had $50,000 in cash.
24:03So whoever this individual was
24:05was clearly angry enough
24:07that they would go out
24:08and get these gang members
24:10and have them go
24:11and invade this house
24:13and ultimately kill somebody
24:15in the process.
24:15They went there
24:18looking for the money
24:19And one thing led to another.
24:24Of course, Carmen
24:25was the key to all of it.
24:26She was the only one
24:27who was alive
24:29who had seen these men.
24:38They were Armenian.
24:40They speak English
24:41but with a heavy accent.
24:45She did mention that
24:58one of the assailants
24:59had a familiar face
25:01and he was someone
25:06that her older son,
25:07Sivan knew.
25:11He looked like someone
25:12who had done the tile work
25:15at her salon.
25:18But she didn't remember the name.
25:20She just knew he looked like him.
25:21He was a familiar face.
25:25Sivan identified that person
25:27as being Edmund Ovasapian
25:28who actually did the tile work.
25:35Once they get the information
25:37from Sivan,
25:39Glendale Police Department
25:40show a number of photos
25:42to Carmen.
25:47And Carmen looks at Edmund's photo
25:50and says,
25:51The individual who walked in
25:53looks like him.
26:03The police looked up his record.
26:07There were warrants out
26:08for his arrest.
26:08Edmund said I didn't do it.
26:21But Edmund had admitted to
26:22during his interview
26:23some issue that he had
26:25I spoke with Sivan about money.
26:29Sivan owed Edmund
26:31a couple of thousand dollars.
26:33So the theory was
26:37that Edmund was there
26:38trying to get the money.
26:39So it sort of worked together.
26:45As it turns out,
26:47Edmund Ovasapian
26:47I owned a black Honda Accord.
26:51And the key witness
26:52across the street
26:53who called 911
26:54identified a black Honda
26:56at the Shanazari house.
26:57The detectives
27:01were absolutely certain
27:03and confident
27:04that they had the right guy.
27:08And at that point
27:09He was booked for the murder.
27:23They told me
27:24that we can go back
27:25to the house.
27:25That was the hardest part of it.
27:29I walked inside the house
27:31and
27:32you know,
27:35I thought,
27:35How could someone do that?
27:46I looked back at
27:47where everything happened.
27:51And
27:52I saw my little brother's
27:54handprint
27:55on the wall
27:56smear it all the way down.
27:59It was a bloodstain.
28:01of my little brother.
28:07When I saw my brother's
28:08handprint on that wall,
28:10like
28:10something out of a movie,
28:12I couldn't care less
28:13to live after that.
28:15I didn't want to live.
28:17That's where
28:18All the anger came out.
28:19All the anger came out.
28:23Because I felt like a failure.
28:28Everything my dad had told me
28:29would replay it back into my head.
28:32You need to take care of your brother.
28:34I failed.
28:35I failed.
28:42On November 1st,
28:44Edmund Ovasapian was arrested
28:46for the murder of Chris
28:47of Shah Nazari.
28:53They had the suspect.
28:55So as soon as the charges were filed,
28:57the Shah Nazari's were allowed back into their home.
29:00When the family was back cleaning up the house,
29:05they came across this black baseball hat.
29:07I thought maybe it was Chris's hat
29:14or Seven's hat,
29:15because they have a lot of hats
29:17The same style.
29:22And I said, Seven,
29:24This is yours.
29:24He said, no, Mom.
29:25This is not us.
29:29At that point,
29:30they called Glendale PD,
29:32and the detectives came over
29:34And they picked up the hat.
29:37My name's Pat Harris.
29:46I am an attorney here in Los Angeles.
29:48Our firm handled Edmund's criminal case.
29:51The cap was taken in,
29:53and they tried to run fingerprints off of it.
29:56And they didn't have any luck with fingerprints.
30:01So they decided to send the cap
30:04to the DNA database
30:06database to see what they could come up with.
30:16The problem for Edmund was
30:18L.A. is so far behind,
30:21And it's DNA testing.
30:22It can take anywhere from six months to a year
30:25for something to get tested
30:27and for the results to come back.
30:28During that time,
30:32Edmund stayed in solitary confinement,
30:35not seeing any daylight.
30:38He had no communication
30:39with the outside world.
30:40Well, I'm coming up on the street
31:02that we grew up,
31:05the house we used to live in.
31:07The street where my brother was murdered.
31:23It was the waterfront with the angel.
31:26I remember coming to this house
31:33maybe 20 years ago
31:35when we bought this house.
31:37It was all dirt everywhere.
31:39It was just
31:39a lot of renovating
31:42we had to do,
31:44And we were happy.
31:47We had a lot of good memories.
31:49This is my house under construction.
31:56We're putting up a wall over here.
31:59Just a garage.
32:01We're going to grow some flowers
32:03and stuff over here.
32:04Just walking around the house
32:06with my dog, Teddy.
32:07Teddy!
32:10Here comes a tour.
32:11Have a good one.
32:12I miss him every day.
32:19Sometimes I miss him
32:20more than other days.
32:24Well, I got this tattoo
32:25as a memorial
32:26to my brother's death.
32:29It's a crown.
32:30It symbolizes
32:31who we were supposed to be
32:33together.
32:36It says my brother's name.
32:38Chris Shanazari,
32:39Savon Shanazari.
32:40July 16, 1985
32:44It's his birthday.
32:46August 4, 1981
32:48It's my birthday.
32:49And then
32:50I posted November 1, 2005
32:52for both of us.
32:54Because
32:55that Savon
32:56He died that day as well.
32:58And definitely
32:59a lot of hopes
33:00He died with him.
33:10when the results
33:21came back,
33:22the Glendale Police Department
33:23I was very excited about it.
33:24because
33:24this is a match
33:26that is going to,
33:28they believe,
33:30actually implicate Edmund.
33:31But it was not
33:36Edmund Ovasapian.
33:37It comes back
33:38to a guy
33:39who is already in prison.
33:52Reg denied everything
33:53from the beginning,
33:54but at some point
33:55admits that he was there.
33:57Glendale PD arranged
34:04for what's called
34:04a live lineup
34:05and they bring in
34:06him and five other people
34:08that are
34:08same size and stature
34:09and resemblance
34:10and then they brought in
34:12Mrs. Shanazari.
34:15Detective
34:16said, Carmen,
34:17you have to come
34:18to the police station.
34:20You have to see
34:21the guys.
34:21They can't see you.
34:25But you can see them.
34:28As soon as she saw
34:30the assailant,
34:32She had a violent reaction.
34:34She threw it up.
34:41She knew she was looking
34:42at the man
34:43who killed her son.
34:44Glendale PD,
34:56when they got the DNA back,
34:57realized that the potential
34:58The shooter was in custody.
35:00so they arranged
35:00for a live lineup.
35:03And when they brought
35:04in the person
35:05that matched
35:06the DNA from
35:07the black hat,
35:08Mrs. Shanazari,
35:09as soon as she saw him,
35:11fell on the ground
35:11and started throwing up.
35:14It was evident to her
35:18that that was the person
35:19that had shot
35:19and killed Chris.
35:27It was so violent to her
35:28because she started
35:29having these flashbacks
35:31Like, that's him.
35:31That's him.
35:32That's him.
35:32That's him.
35:42It was very horrible.
35:43I couldn't breathe.
35:48It was very bad.
35:50Very, very bad.
35:56It's an animal for me.
35:59I don't want to even
36:00Say the name.
36:00So what they think is
36:16they're going to prove
36:17Edmund to be a liar.
36:19He's going to tell us
36:20that Edmund Ovasapian
36:22I was with him that day.
36:24And so they're excited.
36:25They think this is it.
36:26This is the big break.
36:27This is what's going to convince him.
36:28He ended up telling them
36:32that Edmund had nothing
36:34to do with it.
36:36That he wasn't involved.
36:39Eventually,
36:40Glendale Petey had to say,
36:42Edmund was not lying.
36:44He was telling the truth
36:45when he said,
36:46I didn't do it.
36:46The big breakthrough
36:50was the DNA testing
36:53and the result
36:54from the hat.
36:56That's what eventually
36:57exonerated Edmund.
36:59Brèj was the only one.
37:29being tried
37:30for the murder
37:31of my brother.
37:35The trial was very tough.
37:37I wanted to jump over
37:38Get out of the seat and kill this guy.
37:48Everyone knew
37:49that I had that truck.
37:50And that's the truck
37:52that I drove.
38:05It was a milestone for me.
38:06I was very happy.
38:08And I gave my brother
38:09my truck as a gift.
38:14And he was really,
38:14Really happy.
38:15He had the truck,
38:20so he had his first freedom
38:21for a long time.
38:23It was a really good night
38:24for him.
38:26He was out all night.
38:27I didn't see him
38:31Until the next morning.
38:38I ran into his room
38:39and I asked him
38:40for some cash.
38:43I was like,
38:43Chris,
38:44Do you have any cash on you?
38:44I want to go grab some coffee.
38:47He was like,
38:48Yeah, I have five bucks.
38:49Right here, take it.
38:49And then I left.
38:56I left the house
38:56with the BMW
38:58that I just bought.
39:03When they came to my house,
39:05My mother's car wasn't there.
39:06because my brother
39:07took it to the dealership
39:08to get it serviced that morning.
39:11So the only car
39:12that was parked
39:13at my house
39:14It was my truck.
39:17So they came in
39:18thinking that
39:19I was the one
39:20That was going to be home.
39:24Basically,
39:25they came in
39:25I thought Chris was me.
39:34I was praying
39:35when all this was happening.
39:37I was literally
39:38pulled over
39:39to the side of the road
39:40and praying to God.
39:41Praying and
39:42at that same time,
39:44My brother is being murdered.
39:49My brother's murder.
39:50It was my fault.
39:52It happened because of me.
39:54I don't feel
40:06We got justice.
40:08I don't think
40:09they're ever going to
40:10convince the other three people
40:11or however many people
40:12were involved in this.
40:14I think that's it
40:15with Varej.
40:16It turned out to be
40:39a gentleman named
40:39Vardan Vardanian.
40:40was already sitting
40:46in custody
40:47because he had shot up
40:49a hamburger joint
40:50up in Pasadena.
40:54He did something
40:55resemble Edmund.
40:58Had about the same
40:59facial structure,
41:01was about the same
41:01height and weight,
41:03and had some of the same
41:04sort of facial
41:06characteristics
41:07as Edmund.
41:09Now,
41:10Carmen had seen somebody.
41:13She thought it was Edmund.
41:16Only,
41:17she wasn't
41:18totally far off.
41:19And in fact,
41:20It's interesting.
41:20because when you think
41:21back to her original
41:22description,
41:23which was,
41:23It looks like Edmund,
41:25she was dead on
41:26from the beginning.
41:27It was completely
41:29very close to the face
41:31and everything.
41:33That's why I thought
41:34maybe it was
41:35The same guy.
41:37they all look
41:38like each other,
41:38You know?
41:42I think in the end,
41:43the whole family,
41:45obviously Carmen
41:46has never gotten
41:48past this.
41:49You can't get past
41:50Something like this.
41:51It's just too traumatic.
41:53I had a great deal
41:54out of respect for her.
41:55I had a great deal
41:55of admiration for her,
41:57How did she handle it?
41:58And I think even though
42:00the amount of pressure
42:01they put on her,
42:02I thought she handled
42:03It's admirable.
42:07after everything
42:18Changed for us.
42:19I mean,
42:20our life has been
42:21completely changed
42:22to that tragedy.
42:23I was like frozen.
42:28I couldn't feel
42:29Nothing.
42:30Oh my God,
42:32My baby!
42:41It's a saying
42:42that Armenians have,
42:43God forbid you see
42:45the day that your son
42:47Or my daughter dies.
42:48I just wish that God
42:50takes you first
42:51and then your children.
43:06Every day I have to
43:07Remember Chris.
43:09He's with me every day.
43:10I feel it.
43:12Sometimes he,
43:14he have,
43:15I have his hand.
43:16Sometimes I have his voice.
43:20Every time.
43:30He saved my life.
43:33My son.
43:33She carries guilt.
43:42My mom's guilt
43:43is a different type
43:44of guilt.
43:45It's a mother's guilt.
43:51My guilt
43:51It's a different kind of guilt.
43:55If I could change
43:56anything on that day,
43:58I wish I was there
43:59to protect my brother.
43:59I wish I was there
43:59to protect my brother.
44:03And,
44:07uh,
44:08I would have rather
44:09it been me
44:10than him.
44:13Without a doubt,
44:15I'm a drop of a dime.
44:20Definitely.
44:27I'll always blame myself.
44:33to get on.
44:57I'll be wrong.
44:57I'll be like,
44:57I'm sorry.
44:57I'm sorry.
44:58Even if I could change
44:59I'll be wrong.
44:59I'll be wrong.
44:59I'm sorry.
45:00I'm sorry.
45:01I was wrong.
45:01I was wrong.
