00:01Calm continued to reign in the streets of Benin for the second day after
00:05authorities thwarted an attempted military coup over the weekend. But the
00:10events have sparked numerous reactions, not only among neighboring countries and
00:14the regional bloc ECOWAS. The Secretary General of the UN also expressed his
00:19concerns over the events. Our representative for West Africa and the
00:23Sahel, Leonardo Santos-Chimau, is actively engaging with national authorities and
00:27other stakeholders as well as regional and international partners to support
00:32efforts to restore peace and stability in Benin. He reaffirmed our commitment to
00:38supporting national and regional institutions and safeguarding
00:41constitutional order in the country and across the region. To this end, he's
00:47also working with ECOWAS and the African Union to promote a regional approach.
00:52ECOWAS has been particularly active in offering assistance to Benin's authorities,
00:57notably sending troops in standby to the country during the coup attempt.
