UN chief backs Benin authorities, ECOWAS after coup attempt

The coup attempt in Benin over the weekend not only sparked reactions in the immediate proximity of the country, with ECOWAS members intervening to support the armed forces of Benin. The office of the UN Secretary-General has now also expressed worry in the face of the instability in the country.

00:01Calm continued to reign in the streets of Benin for the second day after
00:05authorities thwarted an attempted military coup over the weekend. But the
00:10events have sparked numerous reactions, not only among neighboring countries and
00:14the regional bloc ECOWAS. The Secretary General of the UN also expressed his
00:19concerns over the events. Our representative for West Africa and the
00:23Sahel, Leonardo Santos-Chimau, is actively engaging with national authorities and
00:27other stakeholders as well as regional and international partners to support
00:32efforts to restore peace and stability in Benin. He reaffirmed our commitment to
00:38supporting national and regional institutions and safeguarding
00:41constitutional order in the country and across the region. To this end, he's
00:47also working with ECOWAS and the African Union to promote a regional approach.
00:52ECOWAS has been particularly active in offering assistance to Benin's authorities,
00:57notably sending troops in standby to the country during the coup attempt.
