ECOWAS has deployed its regional standby force to Benin after a failed coup attempt briefly saw mutineers claim power in Cotonou. Ghana, Nigeria, Ivory Coast and Sierra Leone are rushing troops to stabilise the country and protect President Patrice Talon. Nigeria has also sent fighter jets to secure Benin’s airspace as loyalist forces regain control of key institutions. Benin’s government calls the mutiny a treacherous attack on democracy, while regional leaders warn that unconstitutional power grabs will trigger swift intervention across West Africa.
