Benin interior minister says military coup attempt foiled by loyalist troops

Benin’s interior minister said a coup plot, announced by a group of soldiers on state-run television earlier on Sunday, has been foiled. Benin is the latest in a string of coups plotted across west Africa over the past few weeks.

00:00The Interior Minister of the West African Nation of Benin has said that a military coup,
00:06initially announced on Sunday morning by a group of soldiers on state TV as successful,
00:11was foiled on the same day.
00:30The group, which called itself the Military Committee for Refoundation,
00:45appointed Lieutenant Colonel Pascal Tigre as president of the Military Committee.
00:50Benin's president, Patrice Talon, has been in power since 2016
00:54and is due to step down next April after the presidential election.
00:58The attempt is the latest in a series of military takeovers to rock West Africa over the last few weeks.
