01:21Hi, my name is Marco Glandia and I'm from Amsterdam. I'm mainly a director of TV commercials and other things, but I'm also a magician.
01:32When I was young, I really knew what I wanted to do. I wanted to be a storyteller, create new worlds, basically direct things, but I didn't know that back then. I started with skateboard videos and 25 years later I'm shooting commercials with big talent.
01:48I like to play with images. I like to experiment with sounds. What I do on film, I also do it in real life. I spend my summers doing interactive theater installations with a big group of friends.
02:00And that's where I learned to use my magic in a more theatrical, cinematic way. I'm telling stories, I'm traveling the world, I'm doing what I wanted to do when I was 12. And I'm still sort of 12 in my mind.
02:12Penn and Teller have created this act, especially for you. It contains everything that I love to do. I hope you guys love it as well.

02:27In a world not far away from ours, a unique man was born. Born with the head of a bison, he had to deal with the cruelty and misunderstanding from those around him.
02:38So he would often go where he felt at home, in nature. There is where he developed his magical powers.
02:45Today, he is here among us to tell his story. Dear audience, please welcome, Jones Jones Labrie.
02:56Born on an apple orchard during the full moon, Jones had a strong connection with nature.
03:04He has the ability to take simple elements and transform them into extraordinary creations.
03:08When Jones Jones is surrounded by nature, his powers are the strongest.
03:18Jones learned that if you put love into something as small as an apple seed,
03:25it will grow and grow until the love becomes visible.
03:46One day, he received an invitation from a certain ten in Peller, a gentleman that owned a circus and were really eager to meet him.
03:59So he went to visit them to see their acts. And out of nowhere, she fell from the sky.
04:05Brooke, the amazing trapeze artist. She saw the broken boy in him. He saw her natural inner beauty.
04:11Welcome to the family.
04:13Without hesitation, he signed the contract the man offered him.
04:24Finally, respected for his abilities and close to the woman he fell in love with.
04:34Well, this is how Jones imagined it would be.
04:37But in reality, it was torture. They were barely fed and worked long hours.
04:46Performers were locked in their caravans at night.
04:53Jones was not hired to perform. His contract said that he had to make enough money for them to retire.
04:57All right, bison boy. Here's a nickel. And I'll go and make a lot of money.
05:08Jones started to betray his powers to make them enough money.
05:11He wanted to get out of there as fast as possible. Take Brooke with him.
05:25Being disconnected with nature made him lose his powers.
05:43Hey, put that apple down. That's more than enough money. Just bring us a suitcase and take all the performers with you. We don't need them anymore.
06:01Being united with Brooke after all this time gave Jones his power back. With their love combined, it became even stronger than before.

07:14does being a magician make you a better director or does being a director make you a better magician
07:21I think both actually I think it's about telling stories it's about provoking emotions or creating emotions in people
07:28which is things that I find interesting and it's both in directing and both in magic either way
07:33there's something to say for it yeah all right Marco let's find out if the boys have been fooled

09:47fish in a small pond I do card magic mainly and it's a serious thing to me for me a single deck is as
09:54versatile as a musical instrument you express yourself in a deep and personal way by how you move your hands
10:01my first time on Fool Us I did Lego magic trying to be unique we love the routine and we think we have a
10:11pretty good idea how you did bad move I didn't fool them at all but tonight we play at cards something
10:19I've done my whole life Penn and Teller know a lot but they don't know it all no one does and I truly believe
10:27there's a chance

10:43tonight I'd like to try something very special for you thank you because you see most of the time when
10:48magicians say I'm going to teach you how a trick is done they don't do that they do not do that around here
10:54so tonight I will really teach you okay how a trick is not done oh all right yeah maybe in the process I can fool you
11:04so first things first some magicians would blow to deck of cards that have been secretly prepared in a
11:11very specific order to help them find selections I am NOT doing that okay good not at all cards can be cut
11:19so cutting only once is not enough to make sure the deck is not stacked in my favor if you want to cut
11:26you can do what we call multiple cuts like that okay the best way is what we call the riffle shuffle
11:35where you just be for the cars that's it all right but if I have for instance uh 52 aces of spade
11:41I could cut and shuffle all day this wouldn't change a thing all right so that's why I have to show you
11:48that no two cards are the same yes I am NOT using duplicates that's for the faces because obviously for the backs
11:56that's the exact opposite I mean this back is exactly the same as this one and this one and this one because I am not
12:03a marked man all right okay thank you so much and even though we're in vegas this trick is not done with
12:12strippers or
12:14basically anything that would creep my style okay okay good so far so good you with me okay now some
12:21magicians would also try to have you select a very specific card I am NOT doing that instead

18:34Berlin is the perfect place to be a magician,
18:37because it's a city of flux and change.
18:39In the Cold War, there were two Berlin's.
18:42The Berlin Wall split the city in half.
18:44Time stopped, and when the wall came down,
18:47time started again.
18:51I think that's what drew me to magic,
18:54this idea of change.
18:55From this to that.
18:57From skeptic to believer.

22:58Alexander Merck, what are the essential skills, for a magician, for a magician, performing magic, of course, but I think, telling a story, is more important, and is there an underlining story, in this act, the schnapps, yes, drinking, obvious, obvious, yeah, the very easy, do you think, you have a shot at fooling, Penn and Teller, I really don't know,
23:27I have no idea, I have no idea, I'm ready, boys, are you ready, yes, we are, Alexander, that is the perfect cabaret act, just perfect, in every way, just the right level of whimsical,
23:43and funny, and the right level of amazing, it's just a wonderful act, that we like, from beginning to end, and your performance of it, is just beautiful, now, fortunately, you're using a variation,
23:55on a prop, that Max Malini used, and also another duo used, Penn and Teller, we've, we've done a version, of this trick, and we know, that that trick, is also, often ended, with a shot glass, with liquid in it, so we're familiar, with all of that, which is, rather unfortunate, for you, because, we know a lot, of the technology, on this, but, we don't know, how you refilled, the damn glass,

25:19Hello, I'm Kiona, and I'm from London.
25:23Make it rain!
25:25Last year, when I was on Fool Us, I had an incredible experience, but it was also, really intimidating, because I've never performed, in front of an audience, so big.
25:34You've got the two ladders there, which is really nice, and you get all the different colour papers.
25:39I like bright colours, and I have a lot of funky, colourful clothes.
25:43Colour is also great for misdirection, in magic.
25:46I use it to help me fool people.
25:48When I'm not performing magic, I help teach at a special educational needs school.
25:53The idea for tonight's trick, came to me one day, when I was working with the children.
25:57It sort of just clicked.
25:59So I am really excited, to be back on the Fool Us stage.
26:04Hopefully, I won't be as nervous as last time.
26:07It's time to see, whether I've learnt enough, to fool Penn and Teller.
26:17Making her way to our stage, from across the pond, is Kiona.
26:24Hello.
26:25So, as you know from my introduction, I help teach kids at school that are special educational needs.
26:31Now, no matter what their struggles or difficulties are, I feel inspired by them every single day.
26:37And that, that truly is magical.
26:40But, because some of the students struggle to recognise numbers and colours, I created a game.
26:45A game where the students will hide numbered blocks, just like these, underneath coloured cups, just like these ones.
26:52And I attempt to match all of their choices, but without looking.
26:56So, it's a little bit like mind reading.
26:59The kids absolutely love it.
27:01Hopefully, you will too.
27:03But, the thing is, I've never taken on a fully grown adult before.
27:07So, Brooke, would you be my incredible helper tonight, please?

31:54So just a little over a year now.

32:05How did you get interested in working with special needs children?
32:08Yeah, so for a casting website, I started talking to people and they said that they like
32:14quite a lot of actors because they're usually quite quick thinking on their feet so they can
32:19go in and help.
32:20And also when I do the work, it's so rewarding seeing children that really struggle come through.
32:26And there are some schools I've worked at and then a year later I've come back and some
32:31students that are like five, six that couldn't talk now can talk and they're starting to say
32:35a few words and they're like, hello, and it's like really exciting.
32:38So you bring them so much joy.
32:40Yeah, it's really nice.
32:41Well, Keona, your trick was amazing, but let's see if you fooled the boys.

33:04What's hard about a trick like this is that the way it's done is so new that we don't
33:11even have code words for it.
33:13We don't even have cutesy little things to say, you know.
33:17If you had something from 200 years ago, we could say all sorts of stuff to tell you those
33:21kinds of things, you know.
33:23We can get the word crimp and shell and everything else in there.
33:26But this stuff, we don't have code words for.
33:29It's fairly new.
33:30And you concealed that so well by having props that are just simple and nothing could possibly
33:38be gimmicked about them.
33:39And the truth is, nothing is gimmicked about them.
33:43Those are just blocks.
33:45Those are just cups.
33:47But you've got all sorts of other stuff going on.
33:50The blocks and the cups are completely innocent.
33:54But everything else, including you, is not.
33:59At least that's what we think.
34:00We think that there's not as much innocence in you or the things around as there are in
34:06the cups and the blocks.
34:07That's what we think.
