00:00That is a picture-perfect postcard.
00:11It's paradise.
00:13Paradise on Earth.
00:15Wow.
00:17Huge difference in colour from the Pacific to the Caribbean Sea.
00:21The Caribbean Ocean is just unmatched.
00:23Are there sharks in these walls?
00:25Bocas del Toro.
00:31An archipelago of tropical islands along the northwest coast of Panama,
00:36ranging from uninhabited natural wonders
00:39to the colourful, stilted clapboard houses of Bocas town.
00:44This has been a proper vengeance story, I think.
00:46We've seen that growth to first.
00:48We were in total shock.
00:50Yeah, I couldn't believe it.
00:51It took us quite a few hours for it to really sink in.
00:53Competition in the penultimate leg of the race promises to be tight
00:57as just 43 minutes separates the top three teams.
01:01And for the first time, Dylan and Jackie sit in pole position.
01:06Don't slip up, you've got the pressure of leading the pack now.
01:08I know.
01:09We don't like it, we don't want pressure.
01:10We crumble, we crumble.
01:12Still after that first place at one point.
01:14I've had dreams where I'm like, we come first and I'm like shoving the knees from BAM.
01:19I'm like, come on.
01:21We're first, come on.
01:23When we first met Dylan, he was a different person to who he is now.
01:26Now I feel like he's grown into himself throughout this journey.
01:30And now I'm ready to beat him.
01:32I was quite gutted when we opened the book.
01:36No, you were fuming.
01:37I was, I was pretty, I was pretty mad.
01:39Because I felt like we'd done so well.
01:43How would the top two become the bottom two?
01:46Character building.
01:47What's happened?
01:48I think we felt sorry for her.
01:51We're not too far behind.
01:53Yeah.
01:54We know our strengths and when we start moving, we move.
01:57We move.
01:58Four legs in, everyone is hot on it now.
02:01Yeah.
02:02Everyone's found their river.
02:03Obviously we finished last, but it's all to play for.
02:07Every man for themselves on this one.
02:09You thought we were racing before?
02:11Oh, we're on it.
02:12So we're changing gear.
02:13It's gear five now.
02:14Two legs to go.
02:15Yeah.
02:16We race.
02:17Yeah.
02:23What day?
02:326.30am.
02:33First to leave the checkpoint.
02:35Wednesdays.
02:36Yeah, thank you.
02:37Race leaders, Dylan and Jackie.
02:40You ready?
02:41Ready.
02:42Your fifth checkpoint is Medellin.
02:45I swear that's Colombia.
02:47I think I've seen it in like a Pablo Escobar series.
02:50Oh, really?
02:51I think.
02:52Over 1,300 kilometres away, Colombia's second largest city,
02:56Medellin, sprawls across the Abura Valley,
02:59in the northern end of the Andes mountain range.
03:04As the epicentre of Pablo Escobar's drug cartel,
03:07it was once labelled the murder capital of the world.
03:12But now it's a safer and vibrant metropolis.
03:15Oh, okay.
03:16All teams have to bypass the Darien Gap by water.
03:22For safety reasons, this journey has to be in daylight hours.
03:27Darien Gap.
03:28I've heard that it can be a bit dangerous.
03:30The notorious and perilous Darien Gap.
03:33The only land connection between Central and South America.
03:37But no roads run through its dense jungle and vast swamps.
03:42For tens of thousands of migrants each year, this treacherous expanse,
03:47much of it controlled by criminal gangs, is their only route north.
03:54To reach Colombia, the teams have one option.
03:58To travel by sea.
03:59But first, a chance to explore Panama.
04:04Panama's quite a funny shape.
04:06It's kind of like a...like a goose neck.
04:08There seems to be a main road going through.
04:10Yeah, yeah.
04:12They may be tempted to grab opportunities in the west.
04:16With its allure of well-paid work and hidden natural beauty.
04:21Or the adventurers could make a beeline for the east coast
04:24and the secluded, turquoise-ringed islands of Gunayala.
04:29Also known as San Blas, an autonomous territory
04:32home to the indigenous Gunna people.
04:36On the last leg, just being in nature gave me a sense of calm
04:39and it would be nice to have a nature feast again.
04:44Definitely.
04:45Something like hot water springs.
04:46Yeah.
04:47Waterfalls.
04:48Yeah, yeah, that'd be amazing.
04:49So if we go south, maybe Bukwet,
04:52there might be, like, something around there.
04:54Yeah.
04:55And then follow this big road through to Panama City.
04:58Yeah.
04:59It's also very difficult to judge
05:01whether we have enough money for the whole trip or not.
05:04We've hemorrhaged a bit.
05:05Yeah.
05:07With budgets dwindling, Dylan and Jackie
05:09have the least amount of money
05:11to tackle the longest leg of the race so far.
05:15It's just the unknowns of these countries.
05:18We don't know.
05:19But this is our penultimate leg,
05:21so I want us to stand in good stead for the last leg
05:25by saving in this leg.
05:28Here we go.
05:29Hola.
05:30Hola.
05:31To continue their journey,
05:32teams need to get off the islands of Bocas del Toro.
05:36Boats depart regularly to Almirante,
05:38the closest mainland port,
05:40where they can pick up onward transport.
05:42We need to get to Boqueta.
05:44Right now it's La Atua.
05:46Get a boat to the main island
05:48and then bus shorter to Boqueta.
05:50Would it not be quicker for us to get a boat now to Almirante
05:54and there's any Almirante travel to Boqueta sooner?
05:58It's possible, but it's more expensive.
06:00I recommend you go street to Boqueta or Atua.
06:03OK.
06:04So shall we book it?
06:05Yeah.
06:06Let's book it.
06:0730 each, yeah?
06:08Yeah.
06:09Rather than risk finding a connection in the port of Almirante,
06:12Dylan and Jackie opt for a package deal transfer of boat and bus
06:16to Boquete in the Western Highlands.
06:20We could get a quicker ferry, but then it's a bit risky.
06:23We're juggling buses,
06:24which are not that regular over there from what I can gather.
06:26It might be more expensive that way as well.
06:29So it makes more sense to wait for three hours.
06:32I think it's smart to save money.
06:34We could speed up later.
06:36While the leaders sit tight...
06:39That's where we're headed.
06:41Medellin.
06:42Mmm.
06:43..having departed half an hour behind them
06:45and now on their tails, siblings Roman and Harley Moon.
06:49This is our last chance for a proper, like, cultural adventure.
06:52Do you know what I mean?
06:53Yeah.
06:54Roman found the first few legs quite stressful
06:56and I really felt like I had to look after him a lot,
06:59but on the last leg he's been quite calm.
07:01So I hope he realises it is fun as well.
07:07We're going to have to get the boat from Panama,
07:09so Mandigua is a tiny island in the direction of Colombia,
07:13which is good.
07:14Yeah.
07:15It is home to a single Gooner family.
07:18I mean, the only thing is, is I'm an Arsenal fan.
07:20I like Gooners.
07:21I think we can live in our own bubble at times
07:25and travelling somewhere and seeing what their version of life is.
07:29I think it offers perspective.
07:31The faster we can get to Panama City, the better.
07:34Yeah.
07:35Seeking an off-the-beaten-track experience while staying race-focused,
07:40Roman and Harley Moon plan to head via Panama City straight to Gunayala.
07:46Harley.
07:47Look.
07:48Jackie and Dylan.
07:49We'll see them, yeah.
07:50So what's the fastest way to Panama City?
07:52Yeah.
07:53I was hoping not to see another team.
07:56Yeah.
07:57So our best bet is to get to Almirante.
07:59Yes.
08:00And then get the bus to Panama.
08:02Yeah, let's just get off this island.
08:04Can we get two tickets?
08:05Two tickets.
08:06Si.
08:07Gracias.
08:08They're getting on the boat.
08:10But I don't think we should be stressed by it.
08:13Yeah, we shouldn't sweat about that.
08:15Why are they not getting on this boat off the island?
08:18I can still see them.
08:20Why are they not getting off?
08:21Give them away.
08:23Poodles.
08:25Bye.
08:26Adios, Roman and Harley.
08:28We'll see you in Median.
08:31I hope.
08:32Technically, it feels like we're ahead of the team at the first.
08:35Yeah.
08:36Here we go.
08:37Ruta, Mass Rapida.
08:38Got it.
08:39Yep.
08:40One, two, three.
08:42As the siblings make a quick getaway, just 12 minutes behind them.
08:47So my instinct is we take a job.
08:50Anita and Bal, eager to find ways to preserve their budget.
08:54Worker shift at Rox is in Boca Chica, down here.
08:57Yeah.
08:58And then we're by the main road to get to Panama City.
09:02Yeah.
09:03Panama is mega bucks.
09:05And so saving money is definitely part of the strategy.
09:08Because we know we're going to probably need as much as we can
09:10for when we get to Colombia.
09:12Anita's plan, working at a B&B to save an accommodation
09:16in the Cherokee province, en route to the capital.
09:20Almirante.
09:21Muchas gracias.
09:28The first team to arrive on the mainland.
09:32Alboleta.
09:33Roman and Harley Moon searching for a bus straight to Panama City.
09:376 p.m.
09:386 p.m.
09:396 p.m.
09:406 p.m.
09:416 p.m.
09:42It's direct.
09:43It's direct.
09:44La otra ruta es de David.
09:45David, Canada.
09:46Eh, que hora, aquí, David.
09:50Ah, yes.
09:52OK.
09:53That's a bus.
09:54Shall we get that?
09:55We can't wait till 6 p.m.
09:565 p.m.
09:57Yeah, let's do it.
09:58Yeah.
09:59With no direct bus departure for seven and a half hours,
10:02the siblings head to a nearby transport hub
10:05in search of an earlier connection.
10:07Come on, David, my sweetheart.
10:09Give us some luck.
10:10Give us some faith.
10:13Do you reckon Dylan and Jackie have made it off the island yet?
10:22Having finally reached Almirante port by boat,
10:24mother and son are still waiting for their bus to depart for Bocchetti.
10:29Where are you guys from?
10:30Like, London area.
10:31Yeah.
10:32Like, England.
10:33Yeah, yeah.
10:34Cool.
10:35In Medellin, we did the boat to San Blas.
10:37Don't do it like that, OK?
10:38The waves were, like, three metres tall.
10:41Oh, my gosh.
10:42People were crying.
10:43Dogs were barking.
10:44No.
10:45People were throwing up.
10:46What?
10:47Who was in touch?
10:48We're going to Colombia.
10:49We might be doing that.
10:52We're...
10:53Yeah, thank you.
10:54You enjoy as well.
10:55Yeah.
10:56Emma was crying, she said.
10:58Yeah.
11:00Oh, God.
11:05Right now, the buses are ready.
11:06OK.
11:07This way, please follow.
11:09Gracias.
11:10So we got going at most six hours ago.
11:12Yeah, slow stop.
11:13Makes you wonder whether where we're going is a bit in the middle of nowhere.
11:17That's why there's not such a regular bus service.
11:21Hopefully, we can make up the ground and finish strong.
11:25We'll stay positive.
11:26Yeah.
11:27Stay positive.
11:28How are you doing, sir?
11:29Good.
11:30You OK to take us to the terminal?
11:31Yeah.
11:32Excellent.
11:33Just arriving off the boat into Almirante, Molly and Tyler.
11:37Swift start.
11:38With a seven-hour gap to close, they're on a dash to the bus station.
11:42Hopefully, get an overnight bus...
11:44To Panama City.
11:45To Panama City.
11:46To Panama City.
11:47And then grab a boat into Colombia.
11:49Yeah.
11:51Is there a direct bus to Panama City?
11:53Let me see if they have space.
11:55Oh.
11:56Thank you, ma'am.
11:57Who's going to check if there's space on the bus?
11:59That's great.
12:00Yeah, have space to Panama Direct.
12:01From here?
12:02Yes, from here.
12:03Oh, man!
12:04Yeah, you have luck.
12:05That bus reaching about five o'clock in the morning.
12:06Yeah, perfect.
12:07Yeah, perfect.
12:08Yeah, perfect.
12:09Yeah, perfect.
12:10Yeah, amazing.
12:11This is good.
12:12This is awesome, ma'am.
12:13Mmm.
12:14You are the best, man.
12:16Thank you, sir.
12:1711 hours of travel over halfway across the country and it's a nice accommodation.
12:19There you go.
12:20Get the bus.
12:21Get the bus.
12:22Get the bus.
12:23Get the bus.
12:24Get the bus.
12:25Yes.
12:36This is going to help us catch up majorly to the other teams.
12:40This is the redemption leg for us.
12:42Yeah.
12:43This is catch-up leg.
12:44Yeah.
12:45Taking the bus Roman and Harley Moon passed on earlier, Molly and Tyler are making a 600-kilometre
12:51overnight leap to Panama City.
12:56I feel like tomorrow morning this is basically like a level playing field.
13:00We need to just continue this energy.
13:02We can't take our foot off the gas.
13:06Look at the skyscrapers.
13:07First time we've seen skyscrapers this entire trip.
13:10After successfully securing a connection in David, the siblings are the first team into the capital.
13:15I'm quite impressed by Panama City.
13:17Yeah.
13:18Towering over the Pacific, the Wall Street of Central America, one of the region's wealthiest
13:25cities, it's become a magnet for millionaire migration.
13:28It really feels like we're in the US.
13:31I have a feeling it's going to be US prices.
13:34In a way, you're a bit gutted to not spend time in a nice city, but on our budget...
13:39I don't think we can afford to stay here.
13:41No.
13:42Hola.
13:43Oh, lift.
13:44What?
13:45We haven't had a lift in ages.
13:49It feels very modern.
13:50Oh, yeah.
13:51Electricity and everything.
13:53I feel quite good about our progress today.
13:55We've pretty much covered half of the country in a day.
13:59We're about to cross the Guna Yalla.
14:02I don't know much about the Darien Gap, but it doesn't sound safe.
14:07There's moments in this race where we've both decided we will not tell our mum about it.
14:12And this might be one of those moments.
14:14It's got such a nice feeling about it here.
14:26You have holler monkeys every morning.
14:28Who are here?
14:29Yes.
14:30Okay, coming this way.
14:32We have the guests today around here already.
14:35Ah, nice.
14:37If you can give me the hand and put those on the tables.
14:38Sure.
14:39For everybody?
14:40Same for everybody?
14:41Yes, exactly.
14:42450 kilometres west from Panama City and sitting on the gulf of Chiriqui National Marine Park,
14:48the small fishing village of Boca Chica.
14:51This is going to be the best tour she I've ever seen in life.
14:55Anita and Bal are working to pay off last night's accommodation at Roxy's B&B.
15:01This looks so delicious.
15:03Buenos dias.
15:04Buenos dias.
15:05There we go.
15:06And one for the little boy.
15:08Right.
15:09This is ready to go.
15:11Who hasn't had breakfast yet?
15:14You're emptying them?
15:15Yep.
15:16I'll wash them.
15:18Look at Dad, he's washing the dishes.
15:20He's really good at that.
15:21He's so cute.
15:22Oh, my God.
15:23We'll have these done in minutes.
15:25He's such a hard worker.
15:26I want to keep it longer.
15:29There we go.
15:30You were really helpful for us.
15:32I want to show you the area.
15:34That would be amazing.
15:38This village is just 200 people.
15:41I had the experience from Costa Rica that I used to run hotels.
15:44I'm like, I can't start a bed and breakfast by myself.
15:47My place is running by girls.
15:49All women?
15:50Just women?
15:51Wow.
15:52They have their own families, but no husbands.
15:54Single women?
15:55I told them, I can teach you some English.
15:57You can run a place with me together.
15:59We have to empower women in a small village like this.
16:02I just want them to know how valued they are.
16:05That is special for me.
16:07This is the dream, Roxy.
16:09You're amazing.
16:11I feel like I'm being told something myself, right?
16:14That there are things that I'd like to do.
16:20There's been a bit of a change in my life in the last couple of years.
16:24Come on, Dad. Let's have a little meander before we have to get on it again.
16:27Becoming single in my mid-40s is huge.
16:31A lovely cove.
16:32Wow.
16:34Not a soul here.
16:37Growing up, there was so much expectation that you must get married and have children.
16:41And so now, it's not just a process of letting go of a past life.
16:46It's also an embracing of a new one.
16:50I've been in a bit of a funk.
16:52But what I saw in Roxy is what I know I have in myself.
16:56Drive, tenacity.
16:58Master your strength.
17:00Before, there was always this pressure that I had to keep everyone happy.
17:06But now, this whole trip is making me think there's so much that I want to do.
17:10It's like a sense of liberation, Dad.
17:15As a woman, but particularly as a South Asian woman, I really enjoy how powerful it feels
17:22to be able to choose to live the life I want to.
17:25And actually, I had my dad's support.
17:26Maybe I have sacrificed having a family, but I'm okay with that.
17:32And this trip has opened up my eyes about Lamar.
17:35About you, how you feel and how you think.
17:38Do you ever worry about me, Dad?
17:39We sometimes say, oh, who's she with? Is she by herself?
17:43Does she feel lonely?
17:44And that's why we sometimes phone you up and say, come and sit with us.
17:47We don't want to feel lonely, that's all.
17:50I'm not lonely, so don't worry about me being lonely.
17:53I'm good. I'm very happy.
17:54Yeah, because you're sticking with me now.
17:55I know, Dad.
17:58This is incredible.
18:08We made it.
18:10Panama City, early doors.
18:13Arriving into the capital after their overnight bus, Molly and Tyler.
18:17We've had a toilet wash.
18:19Yes.
18:20We smell fresh.
18:22We smell fresh-ish.
18:24And we need to find where we can get this ticket.
18:26To the Gunayala Islands?
18:27Yeah.
18:29The only way for tourists to get safely to Colombia without flying
18:32is to take a four-by-four transfer from the capital to the Panamanian coast, followed by a boat journey through Gunayala to the border.
18:42In here.
18:44Let's go.
18:46Hello.
18:47Hello.
18:48We're trying to cross the Gunayala to get into Colombia.
18:51Can you speak English a little bit?
18:53No.
18:54I'm going to give you a phone.
18:58Hello.
19:00Hello.
19:01Can you please take us to Gunayala?
19:03Sure.
19:04Thank you very much.
19:05I can do that.
19:07And how much will it cost?
19:09The price?
19:10Yeah.
19:11It's $155 per person.
19:16$155 per person?
19:19Yeah.
19:20You pay me directly.
19:21$155 each.
19:23Okay.
19:24And that's the best price?
19:25That's the best price.
19:26Wow.
19:27That is absolutely spend-dog.
19:31Oh, God.
19:34Right.
19:37My life savings have just gone.
19:40Mmm!
19:43That is basically our whole leg budget.
19:46Yeah.
19:47That's the most expensive thing we've paid for.
19:50There's nothing we can do.
19:52Oh, we're such a curveball.
19:54I mean, thank God we saved that we can spend that money.
20:01Yeah.
20:03To reach the port, a 120-kilometre journey that winds around the Sandblast Mountains to the Guna Coast.
20:12We are in the sticks, man.
20:15And there's nothing but jungle.
20:17Mm-hmm.
20:18It makes you think how hard it is to get to the border and the coast.
20:23What the Darien Gap is actually like and how it's so inaccessible.
20:27Yeah.
20:28Trying to go through this any other way would be a wild journey.
20:33There's just so much bush.
20:34This is boss-level Windy Road.
20:38This is Helter Skelter, Silk Park.
20:46Right.
20:47Don't be sick of this car, basically.
20:48Now he's said it.
20:50No, you don't, honey.
20:52Imagine what a ball, like, tarmac in this is.
20:59Let's go.
21:00Let's go.
21:01Let's go.
21:06Are you the captain?
21:07Yeah.
21:08Captain.
21:09Oh, okay.
21:10This boat?
21:12Oh.
21:14It's absolutely tiny.
21:16This boat is safe, right?
21:17Yeah.
21:18Is it fast boat, rapido?
21:19Yeah.
21:20Excellent.
21:21That's all we need right now.
21:24Let's go to the island.
21:27Passage through the Gunayala is limited to daylight hours only.
21:31It's got a bit of oomph.
21:33Oh, my God.
21:34Thank God this seat's got a bit of cushion.
21:37Nighttime presents the danger of rough seas and shallow reefs,
21:41as well as an increased risk of cartel activity.
21:44This is the toughest journey at sea of the biggest waves I've ever seen in my life.
21:54Whoo!
21:56Lord have mercy right now upon our souls.
21:59You have to have a strong stomach first.
22:03Whoa.
22:05It's probably pirate life, please.
22:07I thought we paid for a luxury cruise.
22:10Whoa.
22:14You okay?
22:15I'm a bit uneasy right now, I'd say.
22:18I'm not living my best life, you know?
22:21Yeah, you'll be okay.
22:23I thought you were holding on to me, and I realised you were just holding the money belt.
22:28Yeah, keep that precious.
22:30I'm fighting for my life against these waves, and you're worried about the bloody money belt.
22:33Oh!
22:35This is proper adventure.
22:38Whoo!
22:46Going at a less urgent pace...
22:49Oh, you see that blue?
22:50Oh, my gosh.
22:51It's coming towards us.
22:53It's blue.
22:55Dylan and Jackie are exploring the highlands of western Panama.
22:59Holly and Roman are definitely ahead of us, but are they experiencing anything like this?
23:04We don't know.
23:06Hidden away deep in the cloud forest...
23:09Oh, wow.
23:11..the Haguata waterfall.
23:15Look at this guy.
23:17No way.
23:19Locals and travellers come to swim in its clear pools, and for the brave,
23:22the opportunity to jump from its eight-metre-high ledge.
23:26I'd be so scared.
23:28Dad would be straight in the water now.
23:30We'd make a big splash.
23:32Oh, my gosh.
23:36Let's go to the kiddie pool.
23:38That's more our speed.
23:43Oh, that's divine.
23:44When I'm in nature, I feel like I'm close to heaven or something.
23:54I think through losses I have, I feel closer to them when I'm in those moments of serenity and beauty.
24:05That's amazing.
24:07When I was 22, I met my first husband.
24:10I was due to have James, my first son, 19th December.
24:15And on the 21st of December, there was a knock at the door, and there was two fluorescent jackets.
24:25They said, we just want to let you know that your husband has been knocked over by a car and killed instantly.
24:31I had James, and I found it very difficult on my own.
24:41I eventually got my act together and got on in life, and coped, and I met Barry, who I married.
24:51I've never swum near a waterfall before.
24:55It's so clear, the water.
24:57It is, isn't it?
24:58We had Cameron, and then ten and a half months later, Dylan came around, so I had three little boys under three.
25:07It was absolute chaos.
25:13Are you missing Dad?
25:15Yeah, I am, but I actually think Dad not being here has made me push the boundaries of me as a person, and made me grow.
25:22Yeah.
25:23Because I've always relied on Dad to do things for me.
25:27Exactly. We've had our little moments of braveness on our own.
25:31It's cemented our bond even more, and we support each other with James and things, you know, and it's been tough.
25:39Losing two people very close in my life definitely has changed me as a person.
25:47When James had gone, I was internalising it, trying to be brave and put brave face on for boys.
25:54It took me a while to be strong again, but I've had to be strong as a mother to my boys.
26:02I just want to say thank you so much for everything, and it needs a lot.
26:07Of course I do.
26:09I just don't think about it. I just would always help you and love you and protect you.
26:15Yeah, and I want to protect you, you know, and I want to protect you and just, yeah, like, you deserve the world.
26:24You're the best mum.
26:26I don't think I'm the best mum.
26:27You are, you are.
26:29I'm really proud of the way you've grown up.
26:32And you probably don't need me anymore now.
26:35I know.
26:36Yeah.
26:37I always need my mum.
26:38Always need mama.
26:44Oh my gosh.
26:47That is the most beautiful sand I've ever seen in my life.
26:52After over an hour at sea, Molly and Tyler are making a pit stop.
26:57We've got to jump off on here.
26:59This is too special not to.
27:07Gunayala is made up of a narrow strip of shoreline on the fringes of the Darien Gap, as well as more than 350 islands in the crystal clear waters of the Caribbean.
27:19How on earth did ants get here?
27:22That's crazy.
27:23They're so crafty.
27:25Babe, look at this.
27:27Oh, that's another level.
27:29Isn't it?
27:30Wow.
27:32Islo-esque.
27:33What?
27:34Oh, piss off.
27:36You idiot.
27:38You absolute idiot.
27:40After the Spanish colonised Colombia in the 1500s, the Guna population gradually migrated towards the San Blas Islands, eventually renaming the region Gunayala.
27:50There are no luxury hotels or resorts, and outsiders are banned from owning property.
27:58I've literally never, ever in my life been somewhere this remote. I don't quite, yeah.
28:05Yeah.
28:07Roman and Harley Moon are docking on the 168-meter-long Mandingua Island.
28:13This is wild.
28:16They're staying with the Tejada family, who have lived here for generations, along with their menagerie of dogs, chickens and pigs.
28:24Hi.
28:26Hello.
28:27It's a pleasure.
28:28You're in your house.
28:29Welcome.
28:30Always in order.
28:31Oh.
28:32What the name is for...?
28:34He's called Orion.
28:35Orion?
28:40And here, the name is Gunayala.
28:43Yes.
28:44Is it correct?
28:45Yes.
28:46Excuse me, Spanish?
28:47Yes.
28:48The Kuna is for us, Tules.
28:50Yes.
28:51Yeah.
28:52Yala is...
28:53All this mountain is Yala.
28:55Ah!
28:56The people are Gunas.
28:57Gunas?
28:58Gunas.
28:59In London, my football team is called Gunas.
29:05Yes?
29:06Yes.
29:07Yes.
29:08It's Arsenal.
29:10It's Gunas.
29:12They're my family.
29:14Yes.
29:16Guna is Spanish or no?
29:21No.
29:22No.
29:23Dialecto Guna, materna.
29:24Dialecto Guna, yes.
29:25Aprender es fácil también.
29:27Anay, friend, amigo.
29:29Yes.
29:30Anay.
29:31You are my friend, Anay.
29:32Anay.
29:33Anay.
29:34In English, it's mate.
29:35Mate?
29:36Mate.
29:37I feel so far from home being on this island, but it's nice to be in a family environment,
29:45to be honest.
29:46There's a wolf here.
29:48W-S-Y-C.
29:51Very good.
29:52Muy bien.
29:53Muy bien.
29:54Hermana es el nombre...
29:56Harley Moon.
29:57Harley Moon.
29:58Harley Moon.
29:59Harley Moon.
30:00Si.
30:01I think I'm very much in love with you, pig.
30:06If I stay here for the rest of my life with this pig and Roman, we'd probably do okay.
30:12All right, then.
30:1735 kilometres ahead, Molly and Tyler are the closest team to Colombia, but with boats restricted
30:24from travel after dark, they're bedding down on Isla de Pinos.
30:29Sunset on an island.
30:34We've smashed it.
30:35It's actually blowing my mind that we've been travelling for 27 hours, so it feels like
30:42a massive weight lifted to be on this island.
30:45Miles, they've got hammocks.
30:48Um, okay.
30:50Hola.
30:52Can we stay here?
30:53Yeah.
30:54Okay.
30:56Well, there's a touch.
30:57See, this is, this is it.
30:59I can do this.
31:00This is vibes.
31:02This is true island living.
31:11What is that?
31:12Is that an ant?
31:13This is the first night I've ever spent in a hammock in my whole entire life.
31:21Um, Molly's hammock is nicely protected with a mosquito net.
31:24My mosquito net is on me like it's my wedding day.
31:28There's no lights.
31:29There's no electricity.
31:31There's just the sounds of the waves and the sun that's going to wake us up.
31:35And that's quite actually special but scary at the same time.
31:38But this is the most we've ever felt alone.
31:43How you doing, Miles?
31:44Not great.
31:45Yeah.
31:46You're protected though, innit?
31:47Not really.
31:56Over on Mandingua Island.
31:59It looks harder than it looks.
32:15This has actually been a really special place for us to stop.
32:20There's not a TV.
32:21There's not a radio.
32:23It's just animals and family.
32:26I think coming to places like this are really good for people like me, you know,
32:30who sometimes can get lost in our own world.
32:33What's so funny is that you could feel like you're in the middle of nowhere
32:36but you'll still find siblings performing for guests.
32:40Yeah, we used to do it.
32:41It just reminds me of us singing Craig David.
32:44Doing dance routines Shaggy wasn't me.
32:47Gracias, amigos.
32:49Hello.
32:50Gracias.
32:51Dylan and Jackie are the last team to depart Panama City for Colombia.
32:55Quanta Cuesta.
32:56$310.
32:57$150.
32:58So, $155 each.
32:59300...
33:01Yeah, okay.
33:02Well, we'll just have to play it.
33:04That's a lot of money.
33:05It's a lot of money.
33:07Thank you for that, mate.
33:08Let's go.
33:09Let's go.
33:10Let's go.
33:11Let's go.
33:12Let's go.
33:13Let's go.
33:14Let's go.
33:15Let's go.
33:16Let's go.
33:17Let's go.
33:18Let's go.
33:19Let's go.
33:20Let's go.
33:21Let's go.
33:22OK. Well, we'll just have to play it.
33:24That's a lot of mines.
33:27I'm kind of looking forward to leaving Panama now
33:29because of so much expenses.
33:33One step ahead of them, Anita and Bal.
33:37Ready to Pile.
33:39Setting off on a crossing that can take as long as eight hours.
33:43Whee!
33:44It's a little bumpy.
33:46A bit bumpy, yes.
33:47But very good fun.
33:49Well, we like roller coasters.
33:51We do love a roller coasters.
33:55In an ideal world, we get to Checkpoint tonight.
33:58Yeah.
33:59Let's hope it's a quick, smooth trip.
34:01But I have no idea how long the journey is.
34:04Maybe three or four hours.
34:05I don't know.
34:06Fingers crossed.
34:07Yeah, yeah.
34:09At the front of the park, Molly and Tyler.
34:17Do you feel like jumping back into the race?
34:19Not just yet.
34:22Oh, look at that.
34:24That's a proper traditional fisherman.
34:27I could catch a fish.
34:28I've never been fishing.
34:29I've never been fishing, but that don't matter.
34:30It's about mindset.
34:31OK.
34:32Buenos dias.
34:33My bro.
34:34Can you show me how to fish?
34:35You teach me.
34:36OK.
34:37Let's go.
34:38The Guna people live as their ancestors did, farming and fishing sustainably in Ulus, handcrafted
34:51wooden canoes.
34:51How are you?
34:52How are you?
34:53D'Amelio.
34:54D'Amelio?
34:55Yes.
34:56My name is Tyler.
34:57Tyler.
34:58Right, I'm going to give this a go.
34:59Come on then.
35:01Fishing is the least South London thing I could ever imagine myself doing.
35:06I never knew what it was like to grow up in like a nuclear household.
35:11My mum brought me and my brother up on our own.
35:13She's done everything for us.
35:15You just got to drag it.
35:17I never knew what it was like to not see my mum work multiple jobs.
35:23Come on, Tyler.
35:24You wouldn't be able to say, caught a fish.
35:26My mum would take us out and we'd go to like the supermarket at like midnight.
35:30She would say, we're going to play a game.
35:32Who can find the cheapest dinner?
35:33And at the time, me and my brother are running around like, yeah, we're running wild in the
35:36aisles.
35:37Like, it's like supermarket sweet.
35:38And then we'd go home for whatever we could afford and then she'd make the dinner and
35:41then she'd tuck us in and then just the reality of that situation is that she was struggling,
35:46but she never let up.
35:47Ah!
35:48Oh my God!
35:49Molly!
35:50Molly!
35:51What?
35:52I caught a fish!
35:54Yay!
35:55Come on!
35:57Oh my gosh, I'm holding a fish.
36:00I'm holding a fish!
36:02Yes!
36:03I knew we could do it.
36:05Oh!
36:06Oi!
36:08This is so good, honestly.
36:10Muchas gracias.
36:12Molly Bradford!
36:14She's going to have to marry me, isn't she?
36:17How many fish you got?
36:19I've got five.
36:20Breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks.
36:22That's what I was talking about.
36:23I'm proud of you.
36:24Yeah?
36:25Yeah.
36:26It was actually really special because, like, I've never had that growing up.
36:31Like, going out, learning how to fish and stuff like that.
36:34And it's one thing that I know as a dad, one day I would love to be able to take my
36:39kids out and say, hey, come on, let's go fishing.
36:41I feel on top of the world.
36:43I feel on top of the island.
36:46Do you go out every day?
36:50Every day.
36:51Every day.
36:52Roman is also throwing himself into the Guna way of life, joining Senor Blas to collect
36:58food supplies from his farm on the mainland, where plantain fields line the coast.
37:05We're the first?
37:06Yeah.
37:07Wow.
37:08There's snakes here.
37:09Yes, culebra.
37:10Just like that he's got the knife and I've got the handbag.
37:26This feels like a proper step into the jungle.
37:35This is hard work.
37:36These plantains are not light either.
37:39It's a really nice feeling.
37:41You're not thinking about anything and you've just got a job to do.
37:45It's kind of a nice break from your own brain, I guess.
37:51You know, there's been moments in my life where I didn't even want to be here anymore.
37:55And things like this just make me think, if I had made different decisions, I never would
38:00have seen this.
38:01And I never would have experienced this and I never, you know.
38:06Yeah.
38:07It shows that there's stuff worth living for, you know.
38:19It was a bad time in my life.
38:26I remember one moment in particular where it was really bad.
38:30I just remember my mum passing the phone to Harley and Harley trying to just talk to me.
38:38Just to, I guess, distract me and keep me on the phone so that my mum could get in the car and drive to me.
38:45I don't know if I ever actually have spoken to Harley about that call.
38:49I don't think we've ever really been ready to have that conversation.
38:54It's hard to talk about, man.
38:56It's really hard.
38:57What I do know is that conversation between my mum and Harley might have saved my life on that day.
39:12Yeah.
39:19That was hard.
39:20We walked about an hour into the jungle.
39:22What was it like?
39:23I'm not used to doing stuff that removes me from everything.
39:30Yeah.
39:31But it did make me think though.
39:33Because obviously, you know that I've had moments in my life where I just feel like I didn't really want to be here anymore.
39:40Yeah.
39:48What's upset you?
39:49No, nothing.
39:52It's just hard because, like, we had that day where it was really bad for me.
39:57The more that I think about it and I realise that it was you on the phone to me and...
40:05Until mum got there.
40:06I can't even remember what the conversation was.
40:22But I knew that I was safe if I stayed on the phone.
40:27And I feel bad because I never really said thanks for that.
40:31That was...
40:32Mum.
40:36I'm sorry that I didn't tell you enough that I love you.
40:37I love you too.
40:38I love you too.
41:07You feel so bad?
41:10You feel so bad.
41:19We've never had that conversation before.
41:25It's nice to hear him say I love you but I know he loves me.
41:27When someone has had episodes of really bad mental health,
41:32I think you'll always worry about them.
41:35And I was worried about him coming out here,
41:37and he's really turned it around, and he's doing great.
41:42And I'm really proud of him.
41:46It feels really freeing to have a conversation
41:48because now there's nothing lingering.
41:53We're kind of a clean slate again.
41:55And I think this place will always kind of be special to Harley and I.
42:01All right, let's get back on the boat.
42:05It's one of those places you want to take one last look.
42:07I like it.
42:13Can you get in? Yes.
42:16Right, back to it.
42:18Aww.
42:20That was amazing.
42:25All four teams are now back at sea.
42:29But with Colombian immigration closing before dusk,
42:33there's urgency to get to the border.
42:35We will get there.
42:39We will.
42:41Oh, my gosh.
42:43He's gone into boy racer mode now.
42:47What's going on?
42:49Señor, why have we stopped?
42:52We stopped.
42:53Until when? What time?
42:55No more.
42:56It's getting dark.
42:57Quanto tiempo to Colombia?
42:59Three.
43:00No, sir, you don't know.
43:01This is it.
43:03They're sleeping overnight.
43:04Anita and Bal have travelled as far as they can safely before night falls.
43:10We've been deserted on a desert island.
43:14The adventure continues.
43:1670 kilometres behind...
43:19I haven't seen the Colombian flag yet, have you?
43:21..mother and son are also dropping anchor.
43:24All right, let's go figure out how to get to Medellin.
43:29Hola.
43:30English?
43:31English?
43:32Si?
43:33We're looking to get to Medellin.
43:36Medellin?
43:37Medellin.
43:38Colombia?
43:39Si, si.
43:40You're...
43:41Long way away.
43:42Long way.
43:43We're not in Colombia?
43:44No.
43:45Oh.
43:46Panama still.
43:47Oh.
43:48Okay.
43:49Okay.
43:50Okay.
43:51Okay.
43:52Okay.
43:53All right.
43:54I thought we were in Colombia.
43:56I thought...
43:57Well...
43:58Okay.
44:01I don't understand where the heck we are.
44:05Hola?
44:06Hello?
44:07English?
44:08Yes?
44:09Oh, hi.
44:10Where are we?
44:11Willow?
44:12Yeah.
44:13So, you're right here.
44:14Oh.
44:15Okay.
44:16Okay.
44:17So, we're trying to get to Medellin.
44:19Medellin.
44:20Oh, Colombia.
44:21Yeah, but we don't know how to get to Colombia.
44:22You've got to first get to shore.
44:24Oh, right.
44:25Are we on an island, are we?
44:27How'd you guys get here?
44:28By boat.
44:29Well, we got here by boat, but we have no idea.
44:33Dylan and Jackie are still in Gunayala on Nargana Island, 170 kilometres from the Colombian border.
44:41Yeah.
44:42We're going to figure this out.
44:43It is brain rattling that we've landed here and it's not where we thought it was.
44:51And we don't know how the heck to get to Colombia, but I'm going to try and keep positive.
44:56Hola?
44:57Colombia, see?
44:58What time does it go?
45:00I don't know.
45:01You sleep today.
45:02You sleep here.
45:03It stays here today?
45:04Okay.
45:05Okay.
45:06We might be a bit screwed.
45:09We're in the final country.
45:10Oh, my days.
45:11We made it.
45:12This is nuts.
45:14Molly and Tyler are the first team to land on Colombian shores.
45:31We made it by the skin of our teeth because immigration has literally just closed.
45:38So, someone's looking down at us.
45:41We've just got to get through Colombia now.
45:44Okay.
45:45This looks like a hostel.
45:49On the other side of the border.
45:52Oh.
45:53Hola.
45:54Buenos.
45:55Para frontera.
45:578 o'clock.
46:028 o'clock.
46:03Oh, okay.
46:04Okay.
46:05Great.
46:08We literally got here just after 5 o'clock, so we just missed the stamp out time, which
46:13is a bit gutting.
46:14So, we'll have to get at it tomorrow.
46:16It's going to be a big day tomorrow.
46:18We'll just be there as early as possible.
46:20I want to be at the front of that queue.
46:22Yeah.
46:23Hello.
46:24Oh, gracias.
46:25Gracias.
46:26Gracias.
46:27Gracias.
46:28Gracias.
46:29Farthest away.
46:30Today, stuck on Nargana Island, Dylan and Jackie have secured a room for the night.
46:35Oh.
46:36This past couple of days has completely annihilated our budget now.
46:41We're going to have to be canny and careful to get to the end.
46:45I had no idea how difficult doing the race was going to be.
46:50The confusion of, are we in Colombia?
46:53Are we in Panama?
46:54That was, yeah, quite a tough pill to swallow.
46:58We were almost at breaking point there.
47:01But, yeah, we're just trying our best to power through.
47:10We still don't know how many hours we've got to go to get to Colombia.
47:13We have no idea where we are.
47:15A desert island in the middle of nowhere.
47:18However, tomorrow I am switching into another gear.
47:23Whatever it takes, I'm going to get us to the checkpoint tomorrow.
47:27All right, here we go.
47:31Night, Dad.
47:32Good night.
47:38Oh, I hope you don't snore tonight, Dad.
47:40I don't snore.
47:41You have these tiny little snores.
47:44Shush, I do not snore.
47:46Stop fibbing about me.
47:48Shush, shush, Dad.
47:57There's an 8am boat.
47:58Let's get it.
47:59Gracias.
48:00We're back on a boat.
48:01Still a bit bumpy.
48:02It's all right.
48:03But it's better.
48:04I had a good feeling about today.
48:05Teams have one last boat trip across the Gulf of Urabah.
48:09From here, they can head directly by road to the checkpoint.
48:13This is moving pretty quick.
48:14If we get to the end of the second one first, it would have been worth it.
48:16Just to taste it at least once.
48:17What, two, three?
48:18Yeah, I'm up.
48:19Arriving at immigration, Anita and Bal looking to close the gap.
48:22Is the border crossing, is this?
48:23Let's get our passport stamped and let's get into Columbia.
48:2560 kilometres behind, the car is the most important one.
48:27The car is still moving across the Gulf of Urabah.
48:28From here, they can head directly by road to the checkpoint.
48:30This is moving pretty quick.
48:31If we get to the end of the second one first, it would have been worth it.
48:35Just to taste it at least once.
48:39Like, did you agree?
48:40Arriving at immigration, Anita and Bal looking to close the gap.
48:45Is the border crossing, is this?
48:47Let's get our passport stamped and let's get into Columbia.
48:5060 kilometres behind.
48:53Feels like Panama is not letting us go.
48:57Whoa, look at that.
48:58No way.
48:59Bloody hell.
49:01It's loads.
49:03It's amazing.
49:04Yeah.
49:06It makes the journey all worth it.
49:11Goodbye, Panama.
49:12Take three.
49:14Finally reaching dry land.
49:16We're here.
49:17Yeah!
49:18Two teams now on the home straight.
49:21That was a quick boat.
49:22Oh, I'm a bit windswept.
49:23Get our bags and find the bus station.
49:26Now we need to find a bus.
49:29An express bus.
49:32Oh.
49:33Oh, mate.
49:35Garmin message, what?
49:36Don't send me back the other way.
49:37Due to planned strikes on the approach to Medellin.
49:40For safety, teams will be shuttled to Betancourt Airport and will board the next available flight.
49:48So there's strikes.
49:50On the approach to Medellin.
49:51What does that mean?
49:52Due to rumoured armed attacks in the Antioquia region, the Colombian police and army are on high security alert.
50:01For safety, teams must fly to make a final approach to the checkpoint of Medellin.
50:06Oh, no.
50:09This could be a game-changer though, because if the flight's not till this afternoon, we'll all be on it.
50:17Oh, God!
50:19This is getting madder and madder.
50:21Kind of sad about having to fly to Medellin, because I feel like we were really progressive.
50:31On track and on progress.
50:32But now, it all depends what time the next available flight is.
50:36It could change everything.
50:39Unaware of what lies ahead.
50:41Yahoo!
50:43Point it.
50:44Now, this is very fun.
50:46Anita and Bal are on the final crossing.
50:51I think it might have broken down.
51:03We're literally five minutes out of the port.
51:05Oh, my God.
51:07We're literally just bobbing around.
51:10I hope another boat doesn't come.
51:11And passes us.
51:12Passes us.
51:13Oh, my God.
51:15What is going on today?
51:17Is there a mechanic aboard?
51:22Keep your eyes peeled for any others.
51:25I just don't want to see any other teams.
51:28Whatever happens, we tried really hard.
51:30I know.
51:31And I'm proud of us.
51:36I keep checking out my shoulder.
51:38I still think Bal was just going to be a little bit.
51:40We are having the nightmare journey, Dad.
51:43After they're set back at sea, Anita and Bal are making up time.
51:47Right, let's go find out where these buses go from.
51:51Oh, no.
51:53Due to planned strides, for safety, you will be shuttled tomorrow
51:58to Betancourt Airport and will board the next available flight.
52:01They've missed the last flight departing today
52:05and must now wait until tomorrow to continue their race.
52:09Tomorrow.
52:11Wow.
52:13OK.
52:15I guess we're stranded.
52:18Is that everybody?
52:21Wow.
52:22That's crazy.
52:24That is just like seven minutes.
52:35Two teams have arrived in Medellin,
52:38home to around 2.5 million people.
52:40A model of urban regeneration
52:44and one of Latin America's fastest-growing cities.
52:47Lying at its heart,
52:50the fifth checkpoint.
52:56Travel to Estacion Aurora Metro Cable.
53:00Take the cable car and await further instructions.
53:04Estacion Aurora Metro Cable.
53:06Come.
53:07Get in the whip skinny.
53:09Need a ride.
53:11Estacion Aurora Metro Cable.
53:13Good afternoon.
53:15Good afternoon.
53:16Good afternoon.
53:18Oh, this is tense now.
53:19I just hope that we've done enough to catch up.
53:21I know.
53:23The meter is on and there is traffic and I'm stressed.
53:26We're actually moving.
53:27I can taste the checkpoint already.
53:29I need to be there.
53:31OK.
53:33I think this is it.
53:36I don't think there's anything I'm happy about right now.
53:39Absolutely hating this traffic.
53:43We are not moving at all.
53:46I'm nervous.
53:47Feeling quite stressed.
53:48Yeah, I'm stressed.
53:49Because I don't even know where the other teams are.
53:51Can't figure that out.
53:54Oh, it's whizzing.
53:56I don't know where anybody is.
53:57I don't know how I feel about it.
53:59This is scary.
54:00It is scary.
54:01This is a scary checkpoint now.
54:03But you look great when you're focused like this.
54:07This city is ginormous.
54:13It's huge, isn't it?
54:17All the buildings are matching.
54:18You better like your neighbours here because...
54:20You know what I was about to say.
54:22How many neighbours you got?
54:23Right.
