Pre-match press conference with Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta ahead of Arsenal v Brentford in the Premier League at the Emirates Stadium.
Arteta provides an injury update, explaining that William Saliba and Leandro Trossard are both only a matter of days away, while Kai Havertz and Gabriel remain out for weeks and the squad is being carefully managed during a congested fixture list. He stresses the importance of rotation, says every player has an opportunity and calls the Brentford game “vital” and “massive” as Arsenal look to respond after a demanding run of matches.
He discusses the physical challenge Brentford pose with their intensity, long throws and set pieces, insists Arsenal must dominate those duels, and points out that the overall intensity required in every Premier League game is incredible. Arteta also talks about evolving rules around time wasting, the need for effective playing time to improve, and calls on supporters to be “like animals” to create a bouncing Emirates atmosphere under the lights.
Arteta praises Declan Rice after his supporters’ award, saying he has become a “lighthouse” at Arsenal who steps up in big matches, and hails David Raya’s journey as an amazing goalkeeper whose signing story shows his character. He reflects on dealing with another difficult injury spell, how last season’s issues helped shape a more flexible squad, and explains how Arsenal adapt preparation around a relentless three games in a week schedule.

00:00I'm not going to be able to help you much today because we have another training session
00:07later on and until that happens, we won't know what's going to happen with a few of
00:12the doubts that we have.
00:13Did he have any testing yesterday? What is the nature of his injury?
00:17He had a little niggle but I think it's going to be a matter of days, so let's see if he's
00:22able to do that tomorrow.
00:24So a matter of days for William. Leandro?
00:27Matter of days as well.
00:30Can I have it?
00:31Matter of weeks, I think so, yeah.
00:35So do you think end of the month?
00:38I don't know, let's see how it evolves in the next few weeks. He's doing really well,
00:43he's doing stuff on the pitch but I think he needs some time.
00:47And how's Gabi doing?
00:49Which Gabi?
00:50We have a lot, even one on the staff now.
00:55The one on the treatment table right now?
00:56Big Gabi. Big Gabi is doing very well as well but that's weeks as well.
01:02That's weeks.
01:03OK, let's focus on Frankfurt. It's a busy week, it's a busy period for you. Is this an
01:08opportunity to rotate the squad or is it a necessity to rotate the squad?
01:13That's an opportunity tomorrow at 7.30pm, everybody, 7.30pm kick-off to be at the Emirates, bouncing
01:21and putting energy to win the game. That's the opportunity that we have tomorrow. 7.30pm.
01:27Like animals, everybody at the Emirates to go again and beat Brentford. That's the opportunity.
01:34So you see this Brentford game as...
01:36Vital, massive, yes.
01:38In a busy week, is that a challenge for you as a coach to make sure players are motivated
01:46at what you've got to come Saturday lunchtime to fill a part then back to the Champions
01:50League the week after?
01:51No, because our motivation comes from preparation and how we prepare for every game to try to
01:56be better than the opposition. Where we are in the league and what we are doing, I don't
02:03think we need any more motivation than that.
02:05We try to manage every case, every individual in relation to how they feel in the context
02:28of the matches, but just with the only purpose to have the best options on the pitch and to
02:35come to be better than the opponent. That's it.
02:38Opportunity for Ben White tomorrow?
02:40Opportunity for everybody, as I said.
02:42OK, let's talk about Brentford and their physicality. Physicality seems to have been
02:47maybe a bit more of a challenge for your side this year when we think about stadium-like and
02:51Sutherland, a very physical side, certainly what happened at Stamford Bridge on Sunday.
02:57How prepared are you for the challenge that Brentford will offer, particularly that incredibly
03:01long throw of Michael Chiodi?
03:03Yeah. Well, the physicality comes from different areas in relation to the pitch, but I think
03:08every game that we play, when you look at intensity in the Premier League against any opponent,
03:12what is needed is incredible and Brentford brings different threats, different challenges,
03:19as we all know, and you need to dominate that if you want to win the game.
03:23Danny Farke had some comments after his game against Manchester City about Donnarumma holding
03:30the ball, going down injured, taking a couple of minutes out of the game while Pep Guardiola
03:34was giving instructions on the sideline. He felt like it wasn't something that he likes
03:39to see. What's your opinion? Are we seeing that more, and not necessarily just for goalkeepers,
03:44but from outfield players going down at certain times of the game to kill time and maybe take
03:50the momentum out of the game? Are we seeing it more and is it something that maybe we should
03:54look at eradicating from the game in some way possible?
03:57The game evolves, the rules evolve and that's going to be constant and you look in the Premier
04:02League now how many minutes are we playing, actually the effective time that we are playing,
04:07the effective time that we played on Sunday, there is a lot of things to look at and evolve,
04:13so that's an example, but there are many others that constantly, the game and the rules have
04:19to be evolving because everybody tries to take an edge.
04:22Can you understand that? Yeah, especially when you are on the other side, yeah.
04:27Thanks, James. We'll go to Niv from the Premier League.
04:30Hi, good to see you. Declan Rice won the FSA Men's Player of the Year Award, voted by the
04:37supporters across the UK. Can you imagine when Declan joined, just over two years ago, we had
04:42certain expectations of him. How much did he exceed those expectations?
04:46I think he's very close to what we believed that he could
04:52bring to the club, to the team and the way he could grow personally as well and I think
04:59he fully deserves it. I think he's been incredibly consistent throughout the last two years, last
05:05season again. Again in big matches, in big moments, he's stepping up, which is a massive
05:10thing. You want to fulfil that role at a big club and I'm delighted that he got it.
05:16Can I ask you about another Mikel, Mikel Marino? When he joined Arsenal, he already played over
05:22200 games in La Liga, won the Euros with Spain, a well-established midfielder. In your wildest
05:27dreams, did you ever imagine him become such a good striker? And as the manager as well,
05:32how much flexibility did you give him? Yeah, as a striker said, certainly not. But that's the thing as well
05:37that you learn when you sign a player. I knew that he could offer much more than what he had and
05:44especially after I met him for the first time because a player that has that amount of curiosity
05:52and the amount of questions that is asked how will he is to learn constantly, the way he loves his
05:56profession and football. Yeah, it's difficult to put limits to that because when someone wants to grow
06:03every single day is that determined, that hungry to win and evolve and to be part of something,
06:09that's very powerful and Mikel certainly has us. Can I please ask you about Christian Norbert,
06:14the last time Grenfell managed to beat Arsenal, he scored a second goal. What made you decide that
06:20Christian is the right fit for Arsenal and what are the chances of him being involved
06:23tomorrow against his former side? Well, what I saw on the pitch and then everything that I heard about
06:29him as a leader and the role that he can fulfil and the role that he was going to have here.
06:34And the moment I picked up the phone and spoke to him, he was super excited to join us,
06:40he brings something that we don't have in the squad and I'm very happy to have him.
06:44Goalkeepers, you've been speaking about how things are evolution regarding rules around goalkeepers,
06:56your goalkeeper you brought in over two years ago now is approaching 100 Premier League games,
07:01you're not a bad goalkeeper. It's an amazing goalkeeper and it's a great story as well and
07:08how it happened because as well we tried to sign David much earlier. I think it was as soon as I
07:14arrived almost and he had to wait for another two years and the start that he had and the journey
07:20that we had together, I think it's been phenomenal for us and I'm very happy to have him.
07:25He'll be playing this old team tomorrow, in terms of signings you've made because you've spent £100
07:30million on Declan Rice, a lot of money on other players, power for power, is he the best signing you've made?
07:35I don't know, very difficult question to answer but it's certainly one that is taking us to a different
07:46level and it's certainly a player that has brought something different to our way of playing.
07:53Both teams like to score from set pieces, does that mean that we're not going to see too many
07:57goals from open play tomorrow?
08:00I don't know, but I don't know what team in the Premier League doesn't like to score from set pieces.
08:05Do you see that as a badge of honour then rather than a criticism?
08:09Well, we just conceded a goal against Chelsea on a set-piece and they scored seven corners,
08:13we scored eight, no? So I think we should all be set-piece teams because we all score and concede
08:19from set pieces, unfortunately.
08:21Finally, just quickly about the fans, you said to make sure that they're on time for the game
08:26against Brentford. A lot of managers...
08:28Before the game, not on time, just before, before.
08:30Absolutely. A lot of managers this week have had to answer questions
08:35about maybe their fans being a bit more positive towards their team.
08:39Your fans at the moment are just ultra-positive towards your team,
08:42they couldn't be any more positive, would they?
08:44Yeah, you can always be more and especially when you play a different type of game,
08:50that's where you have to leave the standards and the team, the first and ourselves as well,
08:55with the way we're going to play tomorrow to lift everybody and make sure that we produce the same
09:00energy, atmosphere and positivity around the place.
09:04Thank you very much.
09:05Alex, Vipsy.
09:06Hi, Mikel. I wanted to ask you about the injuries. You got a big deal of careers in Gabriel Jesus
09:11back into the squad on Sunday, but at the same time you lost William Saliba,
09:14kind of being a theme of the season, key players picking up injury. How frustrating has that been for you
09:20throughout the season so far?
09:22Yeah, especially how we lost them with Leo as well because Leo was in a great moment
09:27and Gaby Martinelli was just coming back and we had to manage his minutes. He wasn't able to
09:32play more than what he did on Sunday. So managing that, the fact that obviously
09:37Willy trained the day before and then he wasn't uncomfortable. Players not trained in sets and
09:41positions having to play there. But again, the attitude towards it and the way the players are
09:48performing and giving absolutely everything they can to fulfil those absences has been the key of
09:54the season because we have to deal with a lot already.
09:57Last season, those injury problems were probably the worst you've experienced in your managerial
10:03career. Did that prepare you for the season? Obviously you have a better squad there, but what you
10:08learned last season, has that helped you to get through this tricky period?
10:13Yes, because this season has been worse in some areas, especially in the front line and now what's
10:20happening with the back line. But yeah, we learned and we were able to put that together, a squad that
10:27is much more reliable and have more options. We learned from the past as well that we have to use players
10:33in different positions and they have to be able to fulfil different roles if we want to compete at this
10:39level. An example of Mikel I was discussing before is just the best one probably.
10:44Simon Standard?
10:46Mikel, just on Kai, he said a few weeks ago that he had suffered a setback. Is that why he's not
10:53going to be back until possibly January? Is that what the issue is?
10:56Yeah, so he was doing everything. He could not go to the next level and now it's looking like we have
11:04unlocked that. We are all desperate to have him. I mean, it's a player that personally I love so much
11:11for what he brings to the team, but his character, his personality. I see him suffer being outside,
11:17you know. He's playing record is phenomenal, he's been always available and I can't wait to have him
11:22back around the team playing because I think it's going to be a massive boost for the team.
11:27Just on Declan, when you joined you described him as a lighthouse. I just wonder how you would
11:33describe him now and also you made a big point in the past six months tying down all these key players,
11:39Gabriel, Saliba, Ethan Miles. Is he someone else on your list that you're looking at and thinking,
11:45I'd like to tie him down for five or six years?
11:49That's the way I perceived him, that he could potentially be in a lighthouse and now he's become
11:55alive, which is very difficult to do a big club like Arsenal, but he fully deserves that he's done
12:02it with every step in the way. First of all, behaving, acting and with performance and attitudes that are
12:11at the highest level. He's one that I'm sure myself for sure, the club for sure, I'm going to have him
12:19here for many years.
12:25With the wins over Bayern and Spurs, you could almost describe the week as a learning week and
12:29I'm curious what lessons you did learn from a week of really tough games where you nearly got three
12:34wins from three. Starting from Spurs, I learned a lot as well about international break again and
12:41what happened. For example, what happened with Gabi and how can we correct that never happening again.
12:46Then we played a team, a game in a way that, again, we have to learn and watching them,
12:53you always learn from it. Bayern Munich brought different qualities, players that you don't see
12:58weekly, but we need the potential of it and obviously what they were doing and we took a lot
13:04from them and the last weekend, the same. The amount of games that you have to play within a game and
13:11what happened at Stamford Bridge in that sense. It's enormous because something is the perception of what
13:16happened and after it's actually what happened and why it happened. So it was a huge learning.
13:22James touched on this earlier, the aggressiveness that Chelsea showed on Sunday, it was similar,
13:28it was compared almost to the aggressiveness that Sunderland also showed in their game,
13:31two games where Arsenal did drop points. I think teams are going to look at that and see a blueprint,
13:35maybe if we're aggressive, we can maybe get something from Arsenal. So how do you have to cope with
13:40perhaps the future aggressiveness that you might face from other teams?
13:43I think every team in the Premier League, the first thing that they do is be aggressive. I mean,
13:48I don't think that's going to be something that teams are going to change at all. You take it to
13:53certain extremes, hopefully that will be looked after, like it should have been in the first action of
13:59the game on kick-off with Mosquera, but we have to deal. Again, learn from it and use it in a better
14:06way because we should have explored what we had for a period of time. It wasn't 60 minutes because
14:12from 33 to 39 we didn't play and then it was Piero and I played on the floor and the next four minutes
14:17we didn't play. So almost a part of the second half.
14:21I think around this time last year you mentioned with all these games around the festive period,
14:29it's kind of hard to even get training sessions regularly and I was just wondering, in those
14:34periods do you have to alter the way you prepare for games and how does that work? Do you have to
14:40focus on something that's maybe a bit more mental than physical? How do you kind of work?
14:46Yeah, there is a balance to it obviously and depending on that we play three days after,
14:51sometimes four days after. Obviously the schedule brings now a scenario that is three and three,
14:56so we are used to it. We alter the preparation probably in the physical part a little bit more,
15:03but just rely much more on principles and what we have to do and then tweak what we have to do in
15:09relation to the opponent's strengths and weaknesses. You spoke about sequences as well, sequences of games
15:15and how you can build a consistency with different types of formations and stuff like that. Is that
15:22something we can see in terms of seeing games as blocks and mapping it out like that?
15:29Yeah, sometimes you play against back four or teams that are very direct and
15:35rely or want to take the game everything to a restart or a set piece or the teams that are completely
15:40different. We face for a period of time a lot of back fights and low blocks. Then this block of three
15:46games has been different, so yeah, depending. Sometimes you are luckier so you say, okay,
15:52now for this period this is going to help us for the next few games and sometimes you just have to alter
15:57the game. Just on Saliba, with his injuries this season, I think they've been quite random, it seems.
16:04Is that how you see it? Because I think with the Anfield one, it was a twisted ankle.
16:09Yeah. And then how's this one come about? You mentioned he was uncomfortable in training.
16:15Well, the ankle one, it was a really random and very unlucky action that kept him out for a few weeks.
16:21He tried at Anfield, he wasn't comfortable and he had to stay away. And this one as well,
16:28very bizarre, but hopefully it will be a matter of this.
