National afternoon forecast presented by Tom Morgan
Transcript
00:00Hi again.
00:01If you're hoping for some festive weather in the next few days, then unfortunately you'd
00:04like to be fairly disappointed.
00:06It's staying unsettled and pretty wet as we go into next week.
00:10We've got this large massive cloud waiting in the wings across the Atlantic and that
00:13is associated with the next area of low pressure and weather fronts.
00:17And that's going to be moving towards the UK as we go through the rest of Saturday and
00:20into Sunday.
00:21So low pressure is still in charge, bringing a showery air mass out there at the moment.
00:25Here's the latest radar showing whether heavier showers have been more recently.
00:29And as we go into this afternoon, those showers are going to continue fairly widely across
00:33the UK.
00:34Not for everyone.
00:35There will be some drier interludes as well and perhaps, even if you're lucky, a few glimmers
00:38of sunshine.
00:39But where the showers are most frequent, it will feel like a pretty wet afternoon.
00:43So for parts of North Wales and northwest parts of England in particular, we could see some
00:47fairly frequent heavy downpours and even the odd rumble of thunder perhaps at first this
00:52afternoon.
00:53It will also be pretty wet across the far northeast of Scotland.
00:55And here we've got these very strong southeasterly winds blowing in.
00:59So gusts of up to 35 or even 40 miles per hour here.
01:02And quite gusty winds across more southwestern parts of England and South Wales as well.
01:07But here the winds are coming in from a mild west or southwesterly direction.
01:11So 11 or 12 degrees is above average for the time of year.
01:15And even further north, temperatures reaching 9 or 10 degrees this afternoon.
01:20The showers will continue for some of us into this evening.
01:22But overall, it is turning gradually drier.
01:24And there will be some clearer periods developing, particularly across the south this evening.
01:28And then as we go through the night, the clearer skies will transfer northwards.
01:32So generally, temperatures, the lowest tonight, will be across more central and northern parts
01:36of the UK.
01:37We could see temperatures get quite close to freezing in the glens of Scotland and parts
01:41of northeast England for a time.
01:43So some patchy frost is on the cards.
01:45But further south, look at these temperatures by the end of the night.
01:4910 degrees in Cardiff, perhaps 12 or 13 degrees in parts of Cornwall.
01:53So a much milder but wetter regime returning to the southwest.
01:59Now this rain is associated with the next weather system that's moving in from the southwest.
02:03So out across the Atlantic, we've still got this large area of low pressure dominating.
02:08Various weather fronts moving in from the west as well as we go through Sunday and into
02:12the new working week.
02:13But as well as that, that area of low pressure is going to bring in some very mild air for
02:17December.
02:18So temperatures are going to be in the teens Celsius for some of us before potentially this
02:22area of low pressure here starts to deepen quite quickly through Monday.
02:25And that could bring a spell of quite stormy conditions to western parts of the UK on Monday
02:31night and into Tuesday.
02:32So certainly something to keep a very close eye on.
02:35Keep an eye on our website for any weather warnings that we may issue.
02:39But back to Sunday morning.
02:40That band of rain and cloud continues to push its way gradually north eastwards across
02:44the UK.
02:45So a pretty wet morning for Wales and southern parts of England.
02:49Some rain particularly heavy across parts of Northern Ireland.
02:52So some surface water and potentially some flooding locally here.
02:55And the rain gradually pushing into parts of Scotland as well by the afternoon.
02:59So only the very far north of Scotland staying largely dry.
03:03Perhaps turning a little bit brighter and drier across parts of Wales and the southwest as
03:07we go towards the end of the day.
03:08But here the winds will start to freshen.
03:11So turning fairly windy as I say as we go towards the afternoon.
03:14But the winds, once again, coming in from a mild southwestly direction.
03:18So 13 or 14 degrees tomorrow, even milder than today.
03:22But after that quite cold start across Scotland, here temperatures will struggle somewhat.
03:27So no better than eight or nine degrees for some of us here.
03:30And it will stay wet across Scotland as we go into Sunday evening.
03:34Some particularly heavy rain around for a few hours as well.
03:37Otherwise turning a little drier and more showery across the rest of the UK.
03:41But there will be some showers in some more coastal areas in particular.
03:45And that sets the scene for Monday.
03:48So generally a much brighter and drier day.
03:50Certainly we'll see some sunny intervals on Monday.
03:53But there will be some showers around locally on the heavy side with the odd rumble of thunder.
03:57But most of the showers in the west and temperatures still above average for the time of year.
