Sir Keir Starmer has set out moral and economic arguments for lifting children out of poverty as the Government launched its strategy on the issue, largely driven by the £3 billion decision to scrap the two-child benefit cap.The plan – long-awaited by campaigners – comes with around 4.5 million children living in poverty in the UK.

00:00Well, the Child Poverty Strategy is the single biggest initiative
00:28that any government has taken on child poverty.
00:32And I said that this government will have a mission to drive down child poverty
00:36because children should be able to go as far as their talent will take them.
00:41They shouldn't have barriers, but poverty is a barrier to children realising their talents,
00:48being able to play their full part in the economy.
00:51And that's why I'm really proud to have launched the strategy.
00:54At the heart of the strategy is lifting the two-child benefit cap,
00:58which will lift half a million children out of poverty.
