Seth and Sean dive into which Texans and Chiefs didn't practice yesterday and Josh Simmons being put on injured reserve.
Transcript
00:00So the Texans and the Chiefs.
00:01All right, so we got our first practice yesterday,
00:03which means we got our first injury report.
00:04There were a lot of Texans.
00:07DNP yesterday did not practice.
00:10D'Amico Ryans doesn't seem to face by the whole thing.
00:13Here's the list, and then we'll hear from D'Amico.
00:15The big names on the list, Will Anderson Jr., Woody Marks, Kamari Lasseter.
00:20Those are probably the three biggest names.
00:23Trent Brown didn't practice yesterday.
00:25Danico Autry didn't practice yesterday.
00:27That feels like old guys getting rest, if I had to guesstimate.
00:31Well, Trent's been dealing with a hand issue, so I would worry about that.
00:35Not to mention, look, he's still coming off a patellar tendon injury.
00:38At 375 pounds, at least, I don't – what do you think he actually weighs?
00:45Do you think he's 400?
00:46He's more than 375.
00:47I take the over on 375.
00:48It's not like he's carrying a lot of muscle mass, like in his lower body or anything.
00:52A lot of times that's the deceptive weight.
00:53Or his upper body, yeah.
00:54Yeah.
00:55He's got kind of skinny twig arms to go with that body.
00:57He's got that – he's got a happy retired golfer's physique.
01:02And, yeah.
01:03He's got like a – almost like a retired player who is like, yeah, I'll get healthy at some point.
01:08Yeah.
01:08But I'm going to play 18 holes a day and spend a fair amount of time at the 19th hole.
01:13And yet, the best version of the Texans' offensive line clearly includes Trent Brown at right tackle.
01:18It's wild.
01:18Tim Settle was a name that wound up on there that I had forgotten he limped off the field at one point on Sunday.
01:24So, that's something to keep an eye on.
01:26But the three biggest ones, Woody Marks, Kamari Lasseter, Bill Anderson Jr.
01:30D'Amico doesn't seem too worried.
01:32Kamari, Woody, Will, they'll all be fine.
01:34We'll see how the week goes.
01:36Okay.
01:37Will, it's been this way for a couple of weeks now.
01:39He had a – I think it was a Buffalo game.
01:42They called it a chest.
01:43Yeah, it was the Buffalo game where they were fiddling around with his shoulder a little bit.
01:47And then last week, he was – they listed it as a chest.
01:50Yeah, chest.
01:51So, and Clinton –
01:53Which I immediately worried, like, pectoral?
01:56Yeah.
01:57But it's probably a bruise or something.
01:58Who knows?
01:58Yeah.
01:59Clinton and I had him on the postgame show after the Bills game, and he was Will Anderson.
02:02He was fine.
02:02If I were worried that it was an actual pectoral tear or something, I don't think he could have pulled off that –
02:08a couple of those ferocious bull rushes that he had.
02:10No doubt.
02:11It didn't look like he was trying to be Mr. Finesse out there last week.
02:14The big thing on the Kansas City side, the injuries on the offensive line for Kansas City.
02:18Here was Andy Reid with the injury update on the Kansas City Chiefs yesterday.
02:22All right.
02:23The guys that will not practice today are Roland Wallace with his back.
02:29He is making progress.
02:31And then Josh Simmons ended up having surgery on that wrist for a fracture and a dislocation.
02:37And he'll go on to IR, and then we'll just see about the recovery on that, where it goes from there.
02:44And then Trey and Juwan won't practice today, but they're making progress going forward.
02:49Look forward to the challenge of playing the Texans.
02:51A good football team.
02:52D'Amico's done a great job down there with that.
02:54We got the update we needed.
02:55The big one –
02:55The big one is Josh Simmons is going to IR, their left tackle.
03:01Yeah, yeah, with surgery.
03:02And so that's his left –
03:03Rookie left tackle.
03:04He played very well.
03:05Did go absent for an entire month with personal issues.
03:09Yep.
03:09Without telling –
03:10This is the biggest thing, Sean, about personal issues.
03:12This is one thing I remember.
03:12The first time I heard my college coach flip the hell out was when some kid had some issue
03:17and missed a meeting, but he didn't call.
03:20Like, it's the first thing you learn in college.
03:22You call.
03:23Or these days, at the very least, text.
03:25Yeah, you text.
03:26Send a DM.
03:27Something.
03:27Some kind of communication.
03:28Some form of correspondence.
03:31Yes.
03:31And Josh Simmons does not do that.
03:33He's been playing very well.
03:34Their entire right side of their offensive line might not play this week.
03:38It's shaping up to be an absolute nightmare scenario for Pat Mahomes.
03:43And yet, we know that Pat Mahomes has dealt with bad offensive lines before.
03:47And he still can play hero ball at times.
03:50Some of their wins this year are pretty much just the Chiefs offense not looking that great.
03:55And then Pat Mahomes bails you out with a couple big plays in the fourth quarter.
03:58So, I don't – there is – at no point in this game will I feel like,
04:02well, Texans got them all hemmed up.
04:05No big deal.
04:05Ready to go.
04:06No.
04:07And the right side of that line you're talking about is Jawan Taylor at right tackle.
04:11Is Trey Smith their right guard or their left guard?
04:13Yeah.
04:13He's their right guard.
04:14Okay.
04:14So, he's – they both – they're not on IR, but they didn't practice yesterday.
04:18So, they're at the – at the best case –
04:20And they didn't finish the game last week.
04:22Right.
04:22The best case for the Kansas City Chiefs is they're playing with a backup left tackle
04:28and a banged up starting right side of the offensive line.
04:31So, that's bad news.
04:33Well, that's – and that's where they – and, you know, if those two veterans were out on
04:37a Wednesday, I wouldn't normally think too much about it this late in the season.
04:42But because they didn't finish the game last week, that would – in a close game, you know,
04:47neither of those guys are wimps.
04:48They're going to be out there playing a close game versus the Cowboys that – I'm feeling
04:53kind of optimistic that those guys might be actually seriously injured.
04:57That would be –
04:57And I hope and pray for that.
04:59Thoughts and prayers that you're injured.
05:00Right.
05:01Just this week, you know, we're not – we're not – we're not monsters.
05:04Yeah, not that I'm scared or anything.
05:05I just want as lopsided of an advantage as possible.
05:08Of course.
05:08In America, that's what America wants.
05:10America wants to see the Chiefs put in their place, brought back down to earth.
05:14Yes.
05:15America stands united with Houston, Texas.
05:18They're America's team this week.
05:20Yeah.
05:20They are America's team.
05:21Everybody wants to see – everybody outside of Kansas City wants that stake driven through
05:25the heart of the Chiefs, and the Texans can do it this week.
05:28And the Texans can, if not kill them, put them at a 12% chance to make the playoffs.
05:34That's what I always like when I watch horror movies.
05:36I'm like, oh, I think that monster only has like a 12% chance to live after they stuck a
05:40stake through its heart.
05:41You know, one thing to think about, the Bills – the Bills had some injury issues with
05:45their tackles, you know, and the Texans took advantage of it.
05:48Yeah.
05:48So, you want your injured starters out there versus Will Anderson and Daniil Hunter, or
05:54last week the Bills played their backups, and they looked better than – I mean, they
05:58looked better versus lesser pass rushers, but they looked a lot better with them in
06:02there.
06:02And I – it's maybe a cautionary tale a little bit that, look, A, these guys have played
06:09before that you'd be going up against, but B, that just – like, maybe you want – maybe
06:17I want Jawan Taylor out there trying to play injured.
06:19Yeah.
06:20I'm – like, I'm cool with whatever happens on that side of the offensive line.
06:24I think a banged-up starter may be just as ripe as a backup over there.
06:30And Trey – Trey Smith, their right guard being injured, helps too if – if the Chiefs
06:35decided to just, you know, turn this into one of those rare instances where Kareem Hunt
06:40gets 25, 30 kills a game.
06:42That – and I think that's very possible.
06:44I think that as much as Andy Reid hates to do it, he might look at this game and say,
06:48look, we got – we have to get to third and five at least.
06:52And the Chiefs can run the ball very effectively.
06:54It's just that at times they'll run the ball real effectively and then go completely away
06:58from it.
06:58But I could see this be a game where Andy Reid tries to commit to it.
07:02You know, you can't always – you can't make a hoe a housewife.
07:04I've heard that expression before.
07:06Andy Reid's a little bit of a hoe in that regard.
07:08You know, he's not going to commit to the run.
07:10Yeah.
07:10Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
07:11You didn't call him a hoe.
07:12I'm making the analogy.
07:14Right, right, right.
07:15You don't want Andy Reid coming after you because you don't want him tickling your tonsils.
07:19It's scary, yeah.
07:21Hey –
07:21I want him to help me get out of any kind of vehicular issues, but other than that, I –
07:25Okay.
07:25You know.
07:27That was over the top.
07:29So –
07:30Yeah, I'm the bad one here.
07:32Yeah.
07:34The – you know, the funny guy videos on NFL.com for each of the games, the guy who cracks
07:40all the good – the guy who cracks all the one-liners that really connect with me and
07:44you because I feel like a lot of them are references to the 80s and 90s.
07:48I think he actually does – there's a lot that go over my head, though, so I think he
07:51actually does have a lot of Gen Z and millennial ones.
07:54We just don't get them.
07:55Gotcha.
07:55So we – so the ones we get, we get –
07:57I think he does a really good job since I don't understand a third of his jokes.
07:59Yes.
08:00Yeah.
08:00You know he's got to be funny then.
08:02So you remember two weeks ago when all the experts picked the Bills to beat the Texans?
08:08They were all wrong.
08:09So-called experts?
08:10So-called experts.
08:10This week, despite all these injuries on the Chiefs offensive line that we just spent five
08:16minutes talking about, nine of the ten have picked the Chiefs to win this game.
08:22I think that a lot of what we're seeing here and we've seen it the last couple weeks was
08:26people, despite the glorification of the sack, the glorification of pass rushers and everything
08:33else, they still can't quite get it out of their heads that, no, the quarterback is the
08:39supreme, most important being in all the universe, and other than numero uno, the big G, and
08:46that somehow it just doesn't matter.
08:50And for two weeks in a row, the Texans have been underdogs versus a team that wasn't going
08:55to be capable of handling the Texans' pass rush.
08:57And so – and the Texans won.
09:00Now for the third week in a row, the Texans, despite having a huge advantage of pass rusher versus
09:07quarterback, the Texans are the underdogs.
09:09They're the underdogs.
09:09It's funny, though, you bring up the quarterback, and this is for a deeper dive probably than the
09:13minute that we've got left in this segment, but somebody posted a tweet yesterday.
09:17It was this John Frisella, who's at NFL Frisella.
09:20He posts some good stuff, some good observations, and he posted a list of, like, just instances
09:26here in this year's NFL where the correlation between quarterback play and the quality of the
09:31team is just completely out of whack.
09:33Like, Caleb Williams is 24th in passer rating.
09:36The Bears are the number one seed in the NFC.
09:39The top three seeds in the AFC are Drake May, who's deservedly there.
09:44Drake May is an MVP candidate.
09:46But the fact that Bo Nix and Trevor Lawrence are the quarterbacks for the number two and
09:49three seeds, and quite frankly, the fourth seed right now is the Ravens, who are only
09:54there because they're leading their division.
09:56But Lamar Jackson's not had a good year.
09:57And they've had Cooper Rush in there a couple times and Snoop Huntley.
10:00Look, you know, some people predicted this, which is that, you know, because defenses have
10:05adjusted to the pass so much, they're kind of light in the pants.
10:09They're a little light, a little narrow-waisted, a little pass coverage specialists out there.
10:14Linebackers look like safeties.
10:16Defensive tackles, they're still massive.
10:19But the run game matters, though.
10:22So the Bears are the second-leading rush team in the NFL.
10:24Yeah, yeah.
10:25And they can kind of take it to some of these teams that aren't as equipped to stop the run.
10:29Kind of a shift, yeah.
10:30I mean, and Brock Purdy's had a bad year, and they've had Mack Jones in there, and they're
10:34not now because you can lean on Christian McCaffrey, you know.
10:37But then I also do have to point out the Jets have the seventh-best rushing offense in football.
10:41Oh, yeah.
10:42These rules are not hard and fast.
