Seth and Sean take a trip behind enemy lines to hear what Patrick Mahomes and Andy Reid think of the Texans' bloodthirsty defense.
Transcript
00:00Chiefs Texans on Sunday the Texans defense has been a big topic not just here but nationally
00:05really the last couple the funny thing is it would it really took that Bills game on national
00:10streaming yeah to make the rest of the country and the Texans winning in the process to wake
00:18everybody up to just how good this defense has been good all season since week one you know
00:22they've been leading the league and scoring in yardage but they're just I feel like just now
00:26getting the recognition for it by there was one brief moment where they were not the there was
00:31one week where they weren't the number one scoring defense going into last week they they were not
00:35the Rams were the number one scoring defense because Carolina Panthers took care of business
00:39yeah well that's where the special team screwed the Texans defense over yeah those punt returns
00:46and kick returns count against the they count on the total points at any rate they're back where
00:51they belong in first place and hopefully stay there because that means they'll have a really
00:55good game against Andy Reid and Patrick Mahomes here was Mahomes on what the biggest challenge is
01:01with the Texas defense you gotta match their intensity I think that's that's the biggest
01:05thing I mean obviously the D-line's good the linebackers are good and the DBs are good but I
01:08think what makes them who they are is how hard they play uh every single snap they're flying around
01:12and they're trying to make plays happen they're trying to intercept the football they're trying to
01:15knock the ball out they're trying to make big hits and so we gotta match that intensity um as an
01:19offense and as a team um in order to go out there and get a win yeah that um just that overall like
01:25honestly Pat Mahomes just said there what I think a lot of fans or anybody watching might say like
01:30and what a lot of people say after they watch a Texan you always see national commentators
01:34former players are fun especially like former defensive players when the Texans play on national
01:40television you get all these tweets from either current NFL defensive players or retired NFL defensive
01:45players like whoa whoa even after the Texans lost in the playoffs last year the Texans defense was
01:51getting a lot of love nationally there really were a lot of people talking about like oh did you see
01:56that Texans defense yes and it just it just jumps off the screen at you how fanatically they play
02:02and as a as an offense I think that's the part that is is and as a quarterback especially
02:09probably the kind of unsettling part is some of the things that some of the things where you feel
02:14like you're executing well but then just the play gets blown up yeah you know you make a perfect
02:20throw but it's uh the good receiver gets hit hard drops the ball um and then in the fourth quarter
02:27I do think that some of the drops you see that the drop last week that the Colts had like uh uh
02:34who's the receiver Josh Downs you talk towards the end of the game yeah I mean Josh Downs you should
02:38have caught that ball yep I mean like even with no footsteps near him I think he's hearing footsteps yes
02:44there's there's drops in games versus a Texans defense in the fourth quarter where it feels
02:49like the cumulative trauma of the previous three quarters starts to take its toll you see offensive
02:54linemen like the bills those guys were those offensive tackles were banged up going into that
03:00game they were four times as banged up by the end of it and they were remote they had PTSD from the
03:05rest of the game and they just kind of you almost see people's brains turn to liquid and run out their
03:11ears because they're just under constant barrage from this defense the violence is their superpower
03:17the violence is their superpower someone asked a question on the text page earlier we didn't get
03:21to it was just such a broad question because they go why literally Seth's question was why are the
03:26Texans so good on defense and I'm like okay well it's uh it's gonna be a long answer because they're
03:30very talented and they're very well coached but I think if I if I thought about it for a minute I'm like
03:35I don't know that I've ever experienced a defense certainly not a Texans defense that seems to
03:41strike fear into people as much as this one does it's it's fear but it is also if you just looked
03:46at it in terms of making it as simple as possible they have really really good players at the most
03:53important positions on the field they have two really good edge rushers and they have two really
03:58good cornerbacks and then as a unit they're coached really well so I mean it's it's as simple an
04:06explanation as you could give and because and it can be that way partly because they're not an overly
04:11complex defense all these other defenses are out there like defensive coordinators have almost become
04:16like offensive coordinators annoyingly are these days where they'd rather beat you on the whiteboard
04:21than on the field D'Amico's like yeah uh you know we're going to identify what the big concerns are
04:28but then we're just going to go out we're going to play a million miles an hour and they have the guys
04:32to do it and they're really well coached so there's nothing magical about it they've got they've got some
04:38really talented players but then they're guys who aren't the marquee players play to the up to the up to
04:44the very is as close as you can get to ever reaching your full potential you know and some of that comes
04:49from being if you think about okay why how was the defense able to improve this year over last year
04:54you've got guys who have been in the system for three years now yeah uh you have guys who were
04:59rookies last year who are second year players now Kamari Lasseter and Kalen Bullock especially
05:04and you know guys like Henry Toa Toa Toa Toa is so much scarier in a good way um than he was his rookie
05:15year and I think partly he's transformed his body a little bit um he looks like a sleeker athlete out
05:21there he's still not my ideal linebacker but it's guys like that you're just you're getting more out
05:27of them than the Texans are getting more out of Henry Toa Toa than other teams who might have drafted
05:33him 100% yes you know yes yes like they're just they're getting they're getting the maximum out of
05:39their role players or out of their lesser known guys in a way that other teams don't because they're
05:43not coached as well especially on the defensive line and at linebacker and that's something I've
05:47thought strongly since defensive tackle defensive tackle yeah yeah I mean yeah Will and Daniil are
05:52obviously great players defensive tackle specifically and I felt that since D'Amico got here if you go
05:56back and watch his San Francisco defenses those two position groups were maxima were more than
06:01maximized the guys played above their level and I think that that's a real cheat code too when it
06:06comes to draft time and things like that if you think about lineback drafting linebackers and
06:11defensive tackles when D'Amico Ryans is the head coach especially when you're drafting him on day
06:16two and day three what are the chances we're going to get the best version of of those guys you know
06:21I can they think can you think of a player that they've drafted defensively since D'Amico Ryans
06:26got here or brought in as a free agent that's been just a major major disappointment that hasn't played
06:31at least to the level you thought you were going to get I can't and that's the reason why they're
06:35number one right I mean yeah I mean you go back to like the mid and late round picks that's different but
06:39when you come to the higher like the higher drafted guys yeah I'm talking like fourth round and up
06:44right right I mean it's like so since D'Amico got here it's funny for a team that's got some really
06:50good young talented defensive players um let's just go over the top four rounds yeah you've got
06:56like Jalen Smith we'll see injured right now and he's still a rookie um but Kalen Bullock success
07:01he's going to be a pro bowler possibly this year and and Dylan Horton and Will Anderson those are the
07:06only three defensive players they've drafted and Kamari Lasseter didn't I say him oh I said
07:10Kalen Bullock Kamari Lasseter yeah Kamari Lasseter yeah they haven't drafted many guys on defense
07:14no in fourth round and up yeah so it's but but they've they've they've worked and that's where
07:19and as much as we've crushed uh Casario in the past not put out a good offensive line
07:24like he's just completely nailed it with with defensive backs you know uh he drafted Derek
07:30Stingley before uh before D'Amico is here no input from D'Amico on that one yep yep so it's
07:36fun watching this defense and Jalen Petrie obviously and Jalen Petrie in the second round that same
07:40Stingley year absolutely uh here's Andy Reid on the Texans defense yeah so um well it starts up front
07:46they've they've got an active front and um I think their linebackers likewise are tuned in they they can
07:52run tackle uh very sound that way uh their back end uh likewise they've got talent on the back end
07:59all three levels they're they're solid I think they all work together so they've done a nice job
08:04they have thank you Andy Reid they have um Andy Reid and D'Amico have a little bit of history with
08:10each other D'Amico played for Andy Reid one year uh yeah he always gets left out as an influence on
08:16him yeah um there's great respect there what's that there's great respect between great respect
08:21there Chip Kelly gets left out yeah D'Amico D'Amico was asked about him one time and said the thing
08:27he learned might have been in his opening press conference the thing he learned from Chip Kelly
08:30was innovation yeah uh was you know trying new things science stuff and everything I do think
08:35yeah and I think D'Amico's got more and especially because some of the game management I think people
08:41don't realize that D'Amico has a very healthy respect for the analytics and everything right um but
08:46like I think kind of like with AJ Hinch I think he's got probably the perfect blend where you understand
08:52the value of the analytics but you also understand that there's a real world human uh side of things
08:57and there's how the players see it on the field and and to be fair to analytics people most good
09:02analytics people understand that as well yeah like sports writers love to pit the analysts versus the
09:08players and the coaches and in reality the analytics guys that the really good analytics guys have a
09:13humility to understand that all right this is what it looks like on paper like how does this actually
09:18match up with what happens on the field and everything yep problem is most of the people
09:21writing about analytics actually aren't all that good at math or a football that's uh that's that's
09:28one of the problems it's like they don't they're not actually really smart math people but they also
09:33don't understand the way the game is actually played yep
09:35you
