Post match press conference with Newcastle United head coach Eddie Howe after their 2-2 draw with Tottenham Hotspur at St James’ Park in the Premier League.

Bruno Guimarães opened the scoring with a composed finish after good work from Anthony Gordon, only for Cristian Romero to equalise with a close range header from a set piece. Gordon restored Newcastle’s lead from the penalty spot after Dan Burn was brought down in the box, but Romero struck again with a 95th minute overhead kick from a corner to rescue Tottenham a point.

Howe says he has “seen the penalty back” and “could see why it was given”, admits the late equaliser has “cost us six places in the table”, and accepts that conceding so many late goals this season is “definitely a failing”. He discusses losing control in key moments, the need to manage games better when leading, the impact of set pieces, the psychological side of conceding late and why performances have improved since the last international break, insisting “the best is yet to come” for his team.

00:00Now the late goal conceded, more points from?
00:03Yeah, sums it up quite well. I think we're hugely frustrated with ourselves really.
00:08That was a game where we had to work really hard for the first goal.
00:14I thought we were the dominant team and knocking on the door through the first half,
00:19the goal came when it came and felt then we were in a strong position having been relatively comfortable defensively
00:28to then concede the two goals in the way that we did and the manner that we did is hugely disappointing
00:33because we pride ourselves on being better than that defensively.
00:36Again, your call for consistency is not a bad performance by any means.
00:40It's not a consistent result that you had that opportunity to really start building a better team.
00:45Yeah, and that's why it's frustrating in so many ways because I agree.
00:48I think four performances since the last international break have been really strong.
00:53The defeat in Marseille was strong, today was strong, maybe not the highs of Everton but good.
00:59And we had an opportunity to grab another positive result and we didn't take it.
01:04And when you add that to some of the other points that we've lost late in games,
01:07it's really cost us in our league position and there's no denying that those points added back to us
01:12would put us in a lot stronger position.
01:15Well to Scott, Craig and then Lee please.
01:17Eddie, we've kind of praised the team a lot here for when they're kind of really at it
01:22and intense and almost caused chaos.
01:25The other side of the game is obviously control and just take the sting out of the game.
01:29Is that maybe something that you could be better at, you need to be a little bit better at?
01:34Is that fair?
01:35Yeah, I think I'd agree with that.
01:36A technically second half.
01:37I don't think we were particularly good, especially when we were leading.
01:42You know, when you're leading and you've got the advantage, one or two really quality passes
01:49in different moments can make the difference and we went the other way.
01:53We ended up turning the ball over and becoming in transition far too much in that period of the game.
01:58And ultimately that's probably contributed to the fact that we lost territory
02:03and we lost ability to get up the pitch.
02:05And that's certainly something for us to look at and to try and find a solution to.
02:11Craig?
02:12Good to hear me.
02:13Most of us guys had our head down doing rewrites when that rise went in.
02:16Can you talk to us about what happened?
02:18It seemed a bizarre concession from your perspective as a coach.
02:21How did it come down?
02:22It bounced through bodies, arms, later reactions.
02:24What happened?
02:25I don't really know Craig, to be honest.
02:28I haven't seen it again yet.
02:29So I'm just reliving it in my head continually live.
02:34It looked like we didn't get a good first contact on the first ball in.
02:37Because really, of course, that first contact is so important.
02:41You want to clear your box.
02:42You want to get the danger away.
02:43We've allowed Romero to get an overhead kick in the box, which from that distance,
02:48I don't think the ball should go in.
02:49It's gone through a melee of bodies, looking for someone to block it.
02:53It didn't happen and it's gone in the corner.
02:55It was almost slow motion, wasn't it?
02:57I'm sure from your angle it was the same as mine.
02:59Very painful.
03:01I'll go to the league, please.
03:03I hear you talk about the league position.
03:05I think at the moment alone, Lee, it's cost you six places and the table pool would be
03:10so, you know, so it's very high margin.
03:14Not sure I needed to hear that, Lee.
03:17Yeah.
03:18And the league is so tight.
03:20We know that.
03:21And that's why three consecutive wins was our target tonight.
03:25And we were a few minutes from getting it.
03:27But I suppose that's the Premier League.
03:31That's what makes it the league that it is.
03:32That's what makes football so dramatic and why we're all obsessed by it.
03:36So you have to take the rough with the smooth.
03:38We've felt a bit of pain in these moments before this season.
03:41We've got to try and get on the right side of them.
03:44And is there such a thing as being there for the taking?
03:48The way they came into the game, all of them.
03:51So that went all against football.
03:53You look vulnerable and it feels that we just didn't take that opportunity.
03:58Yeah, I mean, I think I've got to try and see it for what it is.
04:04Well, not for what it isn't.
04:05I think the lads tried to take the game.
04:07We could certainly have done with scoring in that first half when we were on top and dominant.
04:10And there were moments in games that always swing it one way or the other.
04:14And the first goal seemed like it wasn't going to come for us when, for me,
04:20the opportunities were there for us to take it.
04:22But then once we get in front, we've got to do better.
04:25We've got to be more savvy in navigating that moment,
04:27especially with such little time left on the clock.
04:29So I think that's ultimately what's cost us the way.
04:31Just a quick one on, Cassandra or was there anything wrong with it?
04:34Yeah, he took a knock in the first half.
04:36I don't quite know the extent of the injury or what type of injury it is,
04:39but he couldn't continue.
04:40We've got to Jordan.
04:41George and Daniel, please.
04:42Jordan?
04:43Yes.
04:44Nothing but 11 points dropped from in positions.
04:46I mean, yeah, I'm not how frustrating it was happening.
04:48Don't you?
04:49Yeah, it's a real strange one.
04:51Sometimes these things go in cycles and happen and you can't quite work them out like our
04:57away form.
04:58And this is another one.
04:59You know, we've historically been very good at seeing games out, navigating tough situations,
05:05managing the game.
05:07We've got to try and refine that quickly because it's costing us important points.
05:12And today, set plays, I don't think we were particularly good at set plays in either box today.
05:19And that's disappointing.
05:21You touched on that.
05:22There are quite a few late goals tonight that Apu lost Brighton.
05:25Why?
05:26Why?
05:27Why?
05:28Is it also conceding late goals?
05:29Can you both think about why that's happened?
05:30Well, I think you can look back at each moment and sort of identify a mistake or a part of
05:37the team not doing its job.
05:39So the job for us is to obviously coach the team to be better in those situations.
05:44And that's what we'll endeavor to do.
05:45But sometimes it becomes psychological.
05:47Sometimes it becomes a fear of conceding.
05:50And then you do concede.
05:51There's so much that goes into it.
05:52But we've got to find ways when we're in front to be better.
05:56And usually our best form of defense is to attack.
05:58And I encourage us to do that all the time.
06:01Sometimes you have to accept that you're not in that position in the game to do it.
06:05And you just have to see it out and defend better.
06:07I think today was one of those moments and we didn't do it.
06:10George?
06:11Yeah, that was kind of going to be my question really.
06:13But do you think it's a theme or is it a failing?
06:17I think it's definitely a failing.
06:19I mean, we have to take the, you can't sit here and go, I can't sit here and go,
06:24everything's okay in that respect.
06:26It's happened too many times this season.
06:27That doesn't mean we can't figure it out and put it right very quickly.
06:32But today is really, it's a set piece.
06:35It's a moment and those moments happen in football.
06:39They've been on the other end of it at times.
06:42And yeah, individual errors usually from set plays hurt you and that's what happened.
06:49You said before that momentum is, it's kind of just a little bit elusive this season.
06:56Is it honestly the frustration you're in?
06:59Yeah, we feel like we're trying to grapple to get it and we're sort of letting it drop through our fingers at times.
07:06But I think the last four performances give me real hope because the general level of performance has been consistent.
07:14The results haven't.
07:15Marseille, I think we deserve more today.
07:16I think we deserve more.
07:17We didn't get it, but I'm heartened by the fact that we're playing well and we're playing much better.
07:21And if we continue that, I think the results will be there.
07:24There's always be some pain along the way.
07:26That's part of football.
07:27You have to take it and make sure that you're on an upward trajectory, which I think we are.
07:32Daniel Markham and Kieran to finish, please.
07:35Eddie, again, a bunch of the City against Marseille.
07:37You were having a lot of chances against Everton.
07:40You were clinical.
07:41So was it perhaps a surprise, especially with Bergstaff,
07:43that you didn't quite create those clear club openings despite some of the Bulldogs?
07:47Yeah, I think it was a strange one because I thought we were dominant.
07:52We weren't cutting them open and creating the opportunities that were sort of must-score moments.
07:57But I think we've ended up having just shy of 20 shots today.
08:00I think we have been dominant in that respect.
08:02But I think in part that's due to how Tottenham played.
08:05They were very compact, very low.
08:07They were there to make the game difficult for us.
08:09But again, the challenge for us is to be better.
08:12It was a good performance without being our very best.
08:15On our perhaps more positive note, the impact made by Anthony Broden and Bruno Goraes coming on.
08:19Substitutes, I suppose, despite the concession that it's on.
08:22They are real positives or what it did to us.
08:24Yeah, I think all the guys that came on the pitch made a difference.
08:27Positive difference.
08:28I'd expect them to.
08:29They're outstanding players.
08:31I think the two Antonys added pace and dynamism to our performance at a time when we really needed it.
08:38Bruno scored a fantastic goal.
08:40I'm disappointed that we didn't get over the line because I think then it would have been a really good night for us.
08:46Mark?
08:47You seem quite downbeat tonight, obviously, and Stanley.
08:52How close do you think you are to being the team that you can be?
08:55Given the force is actually pretty good, is it?
08:59Yeah, I think we're moving in the right direction.
09:02I don't know.
09:03I feel definitely more positive about the team than I was before the international break.
09:08I think we look fitter.
09:09I think we look like we've got good athleticism.
09:13We've got people in the right areas.
09:15I think the form of the individual players is improving.
09:17Confidence is slowly returning.
09:19That's why today is so disappointing because, naturally, confidence will be dented by that as part of the rollercoaster of results.
09:30I still feel we've got more to come and I still feel we can get better.
09:33I still feel the best is yet to come.
09:36I think that's a good thing for us.
09:37It's a long season.
09:38We've got so many games to try and put things right, but we need to continue to evolve to improve.
09:43Could we see you on Saturday or was that I'm dealing too early?
09:47I don't know.
09:48We'll see how the week goes.
09:49We've got a lot more training to do yet, so let's see.
09:53Kieran to finish, please.
09:54What's the feeling of the dresser most of the week?
09:57Made you in confidence again about King City and everything?
10:02Yeah, I think there's a lot of disappointment and probably frustration is the right emotion, I think.
10:06I think a bit of anger and frustration is never a bad thing.
10:10Frustrated ourselves, no one else.
10:12Frustrated at our delivery of what we did in the latter stages of the game.
10:17Hopefully we can use that to help us.
10:20Did you pick up the penalty?
10:23Yeah, I'd just seen it again there when I was getting interviewed.
10:26I think the defender doesn't look at the ball.
10:28I think he's just focused on Dan and Dan goes down so I could see what it was given.
10:32Thanks everyone.
10:34See you soon.
