Post-match press conference with Tottenham head coach Thomas Frank after their 2-2 draw with Newcastle United at St James’ Park in the Premier League.

Bruno Guimarães put Newcastle ahead on 71 minutes after good work from Anthony Gordon and Nick Woltemade, before Cristian Romero headed in an equaliser for Spurs. Gordon restored Newcastle’s lead from the penalty spot on 86 minutes after a VAR check for Rodrigo Bentancur’s foul on Dan Burn, but Romero struck again with a spectacular 95th minute overhead kick from a corner to rescue Tottenham a point.

Frank praises Romero’s “top performance” in defence and in the box, calling his header “more exceptional” than the bicycle kick and saying it was better than many strikers. He highlights the character and mentality of the team to come back twice after a tough run of results, noting this was their fourth game in ten days and third away game, and insists Spurs are building on strong tactical foundations and decisive actions from key players.

He is adamant the second Newcastle goal “is never a penalty”, questions VAR’s intervention after the referee’s on-field call, and calls for more consistency with decisions that “would be given two times a game”. Frank also hails Tottenham’s travelling support, describing the 3,000 away fans as “exceptional” as their backing and togetherness with the team helped drive Spurs to what he feels was a more than deserved point, while stressing that in a difficult spell the only way forward is to work hard and keep going. Newcastle had more possession, more shots and the higher xG, but Spurs’ clinical finishing and resilience secured a dramatic draw.

00:00I think that was the perfect bicycle king hit with the shin, aiming for the bottom corner.
00:24I think, let's start praising Kuti. I think he deserves that overall at top performance, defending on the ball, coolness, calmness, jewels, and then get up there and score two goals.
00:39And I think the bicycle kick will most likely get a little bit more praise, but I think the header is more exceptional.
00:48The way he does that is better than many strikers.
00:50That said, I think we really like the character and the mentality in the team, what they showed.
01:00After three tough games, I think it's been to go here to the fourth game in 10 days, the third away game.
01:09A very difficult place, go down two times or get behind two times and come back.
01:16It shows everything about the willingness and the mentality in the team.
01:21And also, the second one is very disappointing to concede because I think for me it's never a penalty.
01:29I even speaking to some from Newcastle, I don't think it's a penalty.
01:32And we need the consistency because that penalty, that would be given two times a game.
01:41And I actually think the referee, say, is the referee called on the pitch and he nailed it.
01:47And VAR can only be if it's clear and obvious.
01:49But I want to speak about us and the mentality coming back and a great point away from home.
01:57I'm happy with that.
01:59And I think our fans, exceptional, traveling 3,000 up here.
02:03The way they support us throughout the game, singing.
02:06And also heard them singing and praising a week throughout the game.
02:09You know, that's togetherness.
02:10How much did that mean to you?
02:15You know, you could hear them here.
02:18And it's not a difficult place to come as a way fan and be loud enough so we can hear them.
02:23So they put so much effort into it.
02:25You know, matched the effort from the team.
02:27And that togetherness, you know, drove us forward.
02:31And it gave us a more than well-deserved point.
02:34Check.
02:35I think, given that the team's been in identical rugby space,
02:40it makes such a difference to have that kind of individual being shared in your heroise of Ravaro.
02:47Yeah, we, of course, I think we can set everything nice tactically up
02:52and good principles and all that and try to do it.
02:57But I think, and that's the foundation that hopefully we can make a great team.
03:05But, you know, sometimes it's decisive actions from key players.
03:08And Coochie definitely did that today.
03:13Okay, thank you.
03:15Can you go on about how a boy it was between the team.
03:19You saw that superior today after you beat two guys.
03:23Yeah, I think, you know, I think that's hugely important.
03:25I think the PSG performance was good.
03:30I think there was, I think the team gave everything against Fulham.
03:33It was just a nightmare game in some ways because you're down 2-0 after six minutes.
03:39And then keep going and then also get something out of it.
03:42But that's the only way forward.
03:43We know that.
03:44If you're in a tough run, there's only one way.
03:45That is to work hard and keep going.
03:47And the team did that very well today.
03:51I'll just double check on Destiny at the end.
03:53It seems to be Olympia.
03:53Is it okay?
03:54Okay.
