00:15The fate of The Furious, the eighth outing in the action series,
00:18eclipsed Star Wars The Force Awakens over the Easter weekend
00:21to boast the biggest global opening of all time, not accounting for inflation.
00:26Furious 8 had the advantage of opening day and date in China,
00:30where it earned a massive $190 million, the biggest three-day bow in history.
00:34Overall, The Temple debuted at number one in all 63 foreign markets,
00:39and it did more business than any previous installment in 32 of those.
00:42In North America, though, Furious 8 scored only the second biggest launch of the franchise behind Furious 7,
00:48the final film in the series to star Paul Walker, who died in a tragic car crash in November 2013.
00:54Another big difference between the two films?
00:56Fewer females in North America turned out to see Furious 8 on opening weekend.
01:00Universal estimates that male ticket buyers represented 58% of the audience,
01:04compared with 51% for both Furious 7 and Furious 6.
01:08The fan base is also aging in North America,
01:11as moviegoers under the age of 25 made up 50% of Furious 8's audience,
01:15compared with 64% for Furious 7.
01:18The Fast and the Furious series has also long been heralded for its diverse cast,
01:22something that paid off in the U.S. and overseas.
01:24The concept and point of view has always been like catnip to hip and diverse audiences,
01:30who all speak the international language of fast cars, beautiful people,
01:33high-octane action, and cross-cultural camaraderie, says a Comscore analyst.
01:38And with the huge box office numbers of Furious 8, it's never too early to focus on Furious 9.
01:43Check out THR.com for Josh Spiegel's take on where the franchise should go next.
01:47His suggestion? A trip to outer space in an Armageddon-style situation.
01:52I can only imagine Vin Diesel on the rock floating through space in awesome cars.
01:56Ooh!
