The movie scored the second-best preview number of all time, only behind 'Star Wars: The Force Awakens.' Last Jedi's IMAX previews generated an estimated $5.3 million

00:00Star Wars The Last Jedi soared to a near record $45 million in Thursday previews.
00:14The Disney and Lucasfilm movie scored the second best preview number of all time,
00:18only behind Star Wars The Force Awakens.
00:21J.J. Abrams' The Force Awakens earned a record $57 million in previews in December 2015.
00:27But The Last Jedi beat the Thursday preview numbers of the final Harry Potter pick,
00:31which previously held the record for the second best Thursday night preview gross with $43.5 million.
00:37The eighth Star Wars installment is expected to debut domestically in the $200 million range,
00:42making it the strongest opening of the year. The Force Awakens earned $247.9 million in its opening weekend,
00:49on its way to becoming the number one film of all time domestically with $936.7 million,
00:55not accounting for inflation.
00:57Directed by Rian Johnson, The Last Jedi reunites Force Awakens stars Daisy Ridley, Adam Driver,
01:03John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, Donald Gleeson, Andy Serkis and Lupita Nyong'o, along with original stars
01:09Mark Hamill and the late Carrie Fisher, to whom the movie is dedicated.
01:13Franchise newcomers include Kelly Marie Tran, Laura Dern and Benicio Del Toro.
01:17The story picks up immediately after the events of The Force Awakens, with Ridley's character Rey
01:22seeking out Luke to help the Resistance and its fight against the villainous Kylo Ren in the First Order.
01:27The Force returns to theaters with The Last Jedi just as Disney announced its $52.4 billion bid
01:41to buy major 21st Century Fox assets, including the film studio, home of George Lucas' first six Star Wars movies
01:48prior to selling Lucasfilm to Disney. The only film daring to open opposite The Last Jedi is the animated family film Ferdinand.
01:55It grossed $350,000 in Thursday previews. Tracking suggests Ferdinand will open in the mid-teen to $20 million range.
02:02The voice cast includes John Cena, Kate McKinnon, Anthony Anderson and Gina Rodriguez.
02:08Ferdinand nabbed Golden Globe's nominations for Best Animated Feature and Best Original Song.
