00:03The force is getting ready to strike the global box office once again.
00:07Disney and Lucasfilm's Star Wars The Last Jedi will start opening in select foreign markets
00:12midweek before hitting North America and other major territories on Friday.
00:16The sequel to J.J. Abrams' The Force Awakens should gross over $425 million by Sunday
00:22to secure one of the five best worldwide openings of all time.
00:25That includes a North American take in the $200 million range, the best opening of the year
00:30so far and a feat few movies have achieved. Hollywood is counting on writer-director
00:35Rian Johnson's film to narrow the year-over gap in domestic revenue, which is currently
00:39running roughly 4 percent behind last year's record, $11.4 billion.
00:44A major challenge for Disney is managing expectations so they can avoid the inevitable
00:48comparisons to Force Awakens, which brought in $247.9 million in December 2016,
00:55the top domestic opening of all time, on its way to becoming the number one film of all time
00:59domestically with $936.7 million.
01:03Disney points out that Force Awakens had the distinction of being the first Star Wars film
01:07in a decade.
01:08Overseas, Force Awakens debuted to $281 million for a total of $529 million,
01:14the second biggest global opening of all time behind this year's The Fate of the Furious,
01:19which brought in $541.9 million.
01:22Last year's spinoff Rogue One, a Star Wars story, opened to $290.1 million globally,
01:28including $155.1 million domestically and $135 million internationally.
01:34Last Jedi, otherwise known as Episode VIII, reunites many of the new Star Wars actors
01:39introduced in Force Awakens, including Daisy Ridley, Adam Driver, John Boyega,
01:43Oscar Isaac, Andy Serkis, Lupita Nyong'o, along with original stars Mark Hamill and the late
01:49Carrie Fisher, to whom the movie is dedicated.
01:51Franchise newcomers include Kelly Marie Tran, Laura Dern and Benicio Del Toro.
01:56The story picks up immediately after the events of Force Awakens, with Rey seeking out Luke
02:01to help the resistance led by Leia and its fight against the villainous Kylo Ren and the First Order.
02:06The only film going up against The Last Jedi at this weekend's box office is Ferdinand,
02:10an animated family film from 20th Century Fox and Blue Sky Studios.
02:14Tracking suggests it will open in the mid-teens to $20 million range.
