The latest 'Fast & Furious' installment is the first all-audience blockbuster to unfurl in U.S. theaters since pandemic-era restrictions were largely lifted.

00:09When F9 zooms into theaters this weekend, can it jumpstart the summer box office?

00:14Even as pandemic-induced restrictions have largely been lifted,

00:17the box office continues to face challenges in its recovery.

00:20So far, the writing of the box office has been topsy-turvy

00:23and complicated by the decision of some studios to debut their movies simultaneously in cinemas and at home.

00:29F9, however, is getting an exclusive theatrical release before hitting premium VOD after 45 days or so.

00:35If tracking proves correct, the film is expected to clear $60 to $70 million in its opening,

00:40the biggest domestic debut of the pandemic era.

00:52And even if F9 falls short of the opening weekend numbers of the last several titles in the franchise,

00:57a debut in the expected range would still be a victory.

01:12Comscore box office analyst Paul DeGarabedian said of F9,

01:15This is arguably the first full-fledged summer blockbuster of 2021,

01:20so the stakes are incredibly high.

01:21If the international numbers are any indication,

01:24F9 is poised for a solid debut.

01:27F9, which is already opened in Asia and other select markets,

01:30has grossed nearly $300 million overseas so far.

01:34And according to box office pundit Sean Robbins,

01:36F9 should become another benchmark moment for the recovery process.

01:40But it also is a sequel that had elements like franchise fatigue working against it domestically

01:44even before the pandemic was a consideration.

01:47Maybe it benefits from pent-up big-screen action demand to counter that,

01:51but it could just as easily perform close to conservative pre-pandemic expectations.

01:56A Quiet Place Part 2 presently holds the record for a post-pandemic debut

01:59after opening to $57.1 million over the long Memorial Day weekend.
