01 December - National weather forecast presented by Tom Morgan.
Transcript
00:00Good morning. It's a very wet start to December for many of us out there this morning.
00:05Some heavy rain around and an amber warning in place across parts of Wales through the day today.
00:10And as well as that, we have a number of yellow warnings for rain across parts of the UK as well.
00:14Anywhere from central and south-western parts of Scotland down across the north-western parts of England,
00:18Wales and the south-west of the UK could well see at least 20 to 40 millimetres of rain through the course of Monday.
00:24Over the highest ground and the most exposed sites, we could well see half a month's worth of rainfall in 24 hours.
00:30Over 100 millimetres and that's undoubtedly going to lead to some travel disruption and some fairly widespread flooding.
00:36So do keep an eye on our weather warnings and leave some extra time for your journeys through the course of today.
00:42It's a wet and a windy start across many parts of the UK, particularly across England and Wales.
00:46Coastal gales through the Irish Sea and around some south-western coasts as well.
00:5050, 55 mile per hour gusts perhaps in the most exposed spots and 40 to 55 mile per hour wind gusts inland as well.
00:57So very blustery out and about. There will be some water on the roads as I say and there'll be spells of rain off and on through the course of the day.
01:04Most persistent across south-west England, Wales and northern parts of England.
01:08Perhaps a bit more intermittent across the south-east of England and East Angus.
01:11Some dry spells here but pretty windy nonetheless.
01:14Across Scotland and Northern Ireland though here, well we will see some sunny skies developing through the course of this afternoon.
01:19There will be a few showers out across the north-west but there will be some lengthy dry spells of weather here.
01:24And temperatures will reach 8 to 10 degrees, so quite a bit higher than they were yesterday.
01:29But across England and Wales where it's going to be a much, much milder day compared to on Sunday.
01:33Highs of 12, perhaps as high as 14 degrees Celsius in places.
01:36So well above average for early December.
01:39But obviously not feeling that way given the strength of the wind and the rain.
01:44And there will still be further spells of very heavy rain around through the course of this evening.
01:48Further flooding on the roads is quite likely.
01:50And the rain may well come back in across southern and eastern parts of Scotland for a time through the early hours of Tuesday morning.
01:56But for most of the UK, it will turn drier through the course of tonight.
02:00Clearer skies developing across the Midlands and eastern parts of England in particular.
02:03But there will be a whole rush of showers just moving in on that brisk south-westly wind to some southern and western areas of the UK.
02:10And some of these showers will be pretty heavy.
02:12The chance of some hail and thunder, particularly in coastal regions.
02:15Somewhat cooler to come tonight with lows of around 5 to 7 Celsius in the main towns and cities.
02:20So largely staying frost-free.
02:22But across central and northern parts of Scotland, we could just see temperatures getting close to freezing here.
02:27So perhaps a few icy patches and some frost in the glens.
02:31But Tuesday does promise to be a generally much brighter day for many parts of the UK.
02:35Especially so across England and Wales.
02:37There will be some sunny spells.
02:39And actually for the Midlands and eastern parts of England and eastern parts of Scotland.
02:42Here you may well stay dry for much of the day.
02:45But there will be some frequent showers elsewhere.
02:47Southern counties of England could see some pretty heavy downpours.
02:50Again, the risk of some hail and thunder perhaps.
02:52And perhaps some longer spells of rain for western parts of Scotland as well through the afternoon.
02:57It won't be quite as mild as it will be today.
02:59Temperatures generally speaking around 6 to 8 degrees Celsius in the north.
03:03Around average for the time of year.
03:05Still getting to double figures in a few spots in the far south.
03:07But it will still be rather breezy.
03:09So feeling a bit cooler compared to on Monday.
03:12Now the weather is set to stay pretty changeable through the week ahead.
03:16Low pressure is never going to be too far away.
03:17So we will see a return to showery conditions on Wednesday.
03:21Perhaps something more generally wetter pushing through on this weather front through the day on Thursday.
03:26Followed by a return to showery conditions once again to end the week.
03:29But if you'd like further details on what's on the way.
