00:00Bill Cosby and Roman Polanski are officially out. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences
00:05announced Thursday that it has expelled Cosby and Polanski from its membership.
00:10Following the organization's new procedure for enforcing standards of conduct that it adopted
00:15in the wake of the Harvey Weinstein scandal, the Academy's board of governors voted to expel
00:19the comedian and the director at its most recent meeting on May 1. The Academy said in a statement
00:24announcing their expulsion,
00:30However, five-time Oscar nominee Polanski will keep the Academy Award he received in 2003 for directing
00:39The Pianist, an award he couldn't accept in person since he fled the United States in 1978 after
00:45pleading guilty to unlawful sexual intercourse with a 13-year-old girl. As for Cosby, the actor was
00:50found guilty by a jury of aggravated indecent assault against Andrea Constand in 2004. The
00:56Pennsylvania jury delivered the verdict last Thursday after 14 hours of deliberation. In Cosby's
01:02first trial last year, a different jury deadlocked and the matter was ruled a mistrial.
01:06Best known for his television work in I Spy and The Cosby Show, Cosby never received any Motion Picture
01:11Academy honors, although he was active on the big screen in the 70s, starring in films like Uptown
01:17Saturday Night and Mother Jugs and Speed. The Television Academy has also removed Cosby's name from its list of
01:22Hall of Fame honorees on its website. And a statue of Cosby that once was installed in the Academy's
01:27Hall of Fame Plaza, which had been removed during renovations, will not be returned to the site.
01:32Other institutions, like Yale University and Cosby's alma mater, Temple University, have also rescinded
01:38honorary degrees that they had given to him. For more on this story, head to THR.com. Until next time,
