00:00Will Smith infamously slapping Chris Rock at the 2022 Oscars was a topic of conversation at the
00:052023 Oscars nominee luncheon, with the Academy president calling the organization's response
00:11quote, inadequate. First term Academy president Janet Yang said, as I'm sure you all remember,
00:17we experienced an unprecedented event at the Oscars. What happened on stage was wholly unacceptable
00:23and the response from the organization was inadequate. We learned from this that the
00:27Academy must be fully transparent and accountable in our actions and particularly in times of
00:32crisis. She continued, we must act swiftly, compassionately, and decisively for ourselves
00:37and our industry. You should and can expect no less from us going forward. We are committed to
00:43maintaining the highest of standards while creating the changes we wish to see in our industry.
00:47Those in attendance at the Oscars nominee's luncheon included Austin Butler, Michelle Yeoh,
00:52Angela Bassett, Jamie Lee Curtis, Stephanie Hsu, Colin Farrell, Kate Blanchett, Michelle Williams,
00:58Brian Tyree Henry, and Tom Cruise, who made his first appearance of the season on the awards circuit
01:04and was said to be swarmed by virtually everyone else in the ballroom, including Guillermo del Toro.
01:09During the luncheon, Yang also delivered an implicit rebuke of last year's controversial
01:13decision to not air live the presentation of all 23 awards on the Oscars telecast. She said,
01:19our focus for the upcoming Oscars will in fact be on unity, partnership, and the collaborative nature
01:25of cinema. We shall celebrate the power of entire film crews and the behind-the-scenes magic that makes
01:30movies possible and powerful. She continued, we have worked really hard to present all awards live on
01:36the show this year. For more on this story, head to THR.com. For The Hollywood Reporter News, I'm Tiffany Taylor.
