The actor could face suspension, expulsion or other sanctions under the Academy’s Standards of Conduct for slapping Chris Rock onstage at the Oscars, according to a statement issued after a Board of Governors meeting.

00:00The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences on Wednesday began disciplinary proceedings against Will Smith for his behavior at the Oscars
00:08and revealed that Smith was asked to leave the show after slapping Chris Rock but refused to do so.
00:15According to a statement released after a Board of Governors meeting,
00:18the actors' actions were in violation of the Academy's standards of conduct,
00:23including inappropriate physical contact, abusive or threatening behavior, and compromising the integrity of the Academy.
00:30Smith could face suspension, expulsion or other sanctions for his actions
00:34if the Board chooses to make a decision at their next scheduled meeting April 18th.
00:39Additionally, Smith will receive 15 days notice of a vote,
00:42as well as an opportunity to be heard by written response beforehand.
00:46The Academy also noted,
00:47While we would like to clarify that Mr. Smith was asked to leave the ceremony and refused,
00:53we also recognize we could have handled the situation differently.
00:56The Academy also apologized directly to Rock in the statement,
01:00as well as two nominees, guests, and viewers.
