00:00Ruth Wilson made an appearance on Thursday's CBS This Morning, giving her first interview
00:04since exiting Showtime's The Affair. If you're not caught up on the current season of
00:08The Affair, then you may want to go watch the latest episode before watching this story
00:12because there are some pretty big spoilers ahead. Wilson, who played Alison Bailey before
00:17being killed off in the shocking August 5th episode, explained that she is not allowed
00:21to talk about why she's leaving the show she starred on for four seasons.
00:25I did want to leave, but I'm not allowed to talk about why.
00:28When pressed by anchor Gayle King on whether or not her decision was over salary
00:32parody, Wilson replied,
00:36In February, Wilson had called for equal pay when she told Radio Times that her male
00:40co-star Dominic West was definitely making more money than her on the series.
00:58He gets more than me. I mean, I don't know what the figure is, but I'm sure he does.
01:02Wilson said the conversation of paid parody needs to be an open discussion and men need to
01:06help us out. But she added that she hadn't spoken to West about it.
01:10Later on Thursday, Showtime responded to Wilson's appearance, saying that Alison's
01:14story had run its course. In a statement made to THR, the network said,
01:18We can't speak for Ruth, but heading into season four, everyone agreed the character's story
01:22had run its course. Ultimately, it felt like the most powerful creative decision would be
01:26to end Alison's arc at the moment when she had finally achieved self-empowerment.
01:30The impact of her loss will be felt as the series concludes next season.
01:34We thank the many fans who embrace the character of Alison and especially thank Ruth for her
01:38indelible work over the past four seasons.
01:41The affair follows the different perspectives of main characters Alison, Noah Soloway,
01:45played by West, Helen Butler, portrayed by Maura Tierney, and Cole Lockhart, played by
01:49Joshua Jackson. After revealing in a Noah and Cole-centric episode that Alison had died,
01:54the August 12th episode showed Alison's perspective on the event. In a twist, however,
01:59the episode featured two differing points of view from her character, leaving some mystery
02:03surrounding how her death happened. The first perspective implied that Alison took her own
02:07life, the same conclusion the police have arrived at, while the second showed that she
02:11was murdered by her new boyfriend, Ben, played by Ramon Rodriguez. Wilson has her own
02:16opinion on which one she thinks is the true depiction.
02:19I think it's murder. It's not entirely clear. And also, you know, is it the fantasy version
02:24of the first half? The second half is reality?
02:26One thing she is sure of, I'm not coming back, so she's dead.
02:30The affair was renewed for a fifth and final season ahead of the reveal of Alison's death.
02:34The season four finale airs on Sunday, August 19th.
