00:00I didn't mean what they think I meant, and that's what's so painful.
00:06Rabbi Shmuley Boteach has released his interview with Roseanne Barr, which was recorded the day
00:11after her sitcom was cancelled at ABC. The rebooted Roseanne was axed at the network after
00:15Barr posted a racist tweet about Valerie Jarrett, a senior advisor to former President Barack Obama.
00:21Boteach posted the interview to his SoundCloud account on Sunday morning, along with a transcript
00:24of the conversation on his Facebook page.
00:30Barr said of her tweet, and that's what's so painful.
00:50Barr has succumbed to tears several times during the conversation, at one point saying,
01:00remorse, you have to follow it with recompense. In the week since her hit show was cancelled,
01:03Barr has been dropped from her agency ICM partners, received considerable backlash from Hollywood,
01:08reruns of her show were pulled from Paramount Network, TV Land and CMT, and ABC has green-lighted
01:14The Conners, a spin-off of Roseanne, without her attached. Many labeled Barr's tweet racist as she
01:19referred to Jarrett, an African-American woman, as if the Muslim Brotherhood and Planet of the Apes
01:23had a baby.
01:24Through tears, Barr told Boteach,
01:25I'm a lot of things, a loud mouth and all that stuff, but I'm not stupid for God's sake.
01:29I never would have wittingly called any black person a monkey. I just wouldn't do that. I didn't do that.
01:35Still crying, she continued,
01:36People think that I did that and it just kills me. I didn't do that. And if they do think that,
01:41I'm just so sorry that I was so unclear and stupid. I'm very sorry. I have loved ones who are
01:46African-Americans and I just can't stand it. I've made a huge error and I told ABC when they called me.
01:51Barr also noted her previous excuse for her tweet, which was that she was under the influence
01:54of Ambien when she made the comment.
01:56That's no excuse, but that is what was real, she told Boteach.
01:59Barr continued,
02:00I horribly regret it. Are you kidding? I lost everything and I regretted it before I lost everything.
02:06And I said to God, I am willing to accept whatever consequences this brings because I know
02:10I've done wrong. I'm going to accept what the consequences are and I do and I have,
02:15but they don't ever stop. They don't accept my apology or explanation and I've made myself
02:19a hate magnet. And as a Jew, it's just horrible. It's horrible.
