Nathan Mitchell explains the "inner journey" he had playing his character Black Noir of 'The Boys' while chatting with THR at San Diego Comic-Con. Plus, he shares what he wants his character to become in the upcoming season of the show.

00:00Well, and The Boys has grown in viewers every single season.
00:03Do you think it's because of that same reason? It's resonating.
00:06I think so. I think, you know, Eric is such a talented writer, you know,
00:12and the entire team, and that trickles down to our cast and everyone involved,
00:18that it's just a reflection of what is going on in terms of how we're baking the cake.
00:25What was it like showing Black Noir in a new way in season four?
00:30It was so fun. You know, it's funny because the conflicts that exist with Black Noir and everyone in The Seven,
00:38that's not what happens behind the scenes.
00:39Like, Eric and I have a really good dialogue and back and forth,
00:43and any time I have questions I can ask him and he's there.
00:46But as a character, as an actor myself, you know, internally I was always like,
00:52how would Noir do this? What would he do here? Is this in character?
00:54And so that inner struggle or that inner journey that I had, you know, new Noir has that.
01:06And so I can bring what was going on internally for me to this character
01:10and externalize it through his relationships in the story.
01:15We know that next season will be the last season of the show.
01:17How do you think or hope this all ends for Noir?
01:20Ooh. You know, I hope that new Noir steps into his own as a suit and establishes his own identity.
01:31What sort of backstory did you create for this new Noir?
01:34Because obviously he's also super, but in season four we don't know a ton about him yet.
01:40I think the backstory for new Noir is he's an actor who's incredibly dedicated to his craft.
01:47And he hadn't hit the heights of success that he wanted to hit.
01:53And he kind of finds himself in a place where he gets a call that he didn't expect to get.
01:57And they're like, hey, do you want to join The Seven?
01:59And it's a dream come true, except it's not.
02:01You know, it's like you're this expressive actor, and then you get this role where it's like being a theater actor
02:10and getting something that's a Broadway hit.
02:13But they're like, and we just want you to stand there and do nothing.
02:17And he's like, why? Why am I doing this? What's happening?
02:19And no one's answering any of his questions.
02:21So it's the best thing and the most challenging thing for him at the same time.
02:30Sometimes it feels like we're currently living in an episode of The Boys.
02:34What's your take on the way the show has somehow seemed to predict real-life events?
02:39I think that, you know, we are just a TV show.
02:43You know, and I think that as a TV show, we shouldn't make it more than it is.
02:53You know, I think The Boys is a show that asks questions and leaves people to find their own answers.
02:59You know, yeah, I think it's interesting, you know, because we rewrite their show like 18 months,
03:08a year and a half before it comes out.
03:11And so the way it lines up with certain things, like it makes me think of The Simpsons, right?
03:16But again, we're just a TV show. We're a fictional show.
03:20We're here to ask questions and, you know, allow people to have fun, you know?
03:27And so anything is just a coincidence, if that at all.
03:31But it's great to be on a show where people really push the envelope.
03:37Eric announced a spinoff, Vought Rising, today here at Comic-Con.
03:40What are you excited to see in that spinoff?
03:42I'm excited to see Jensen and Aya, you know, two amazing people and amazing performers and actors.
03:50I think we all really missed them on the show when they left.
03:55And so I'm glad that they get to come back in this universe and we get to see them carry on their own story.
04:02You know, bro.
04:06Come on now.
